Both The Battle Didn't Count and Heads I Win, Tails You Lose cover the Player winning an encounter in a video game for the Character to not have the same outcome in the following cutscene. Reading the text of the tropes I suppose the difference is that Heads I Win is explicitly about the Character losing the fight in the cutscene, while Battle Didn't Count is about the Character winning the fight in the cutscene but the Boss surviving (instead of exploding or dying because their health reduced to zero).

But both tropes are poorly named, as they could just be about sore losers in general, or anything related to a Pyrrhic Victory rather than game specific story integration/segregation. And the tropes overlap so heavily they might be better served being combined.

Even the laconics are almost the same, and don't differentiate them the way the trope pages themselves do.

Battle Didn't Count: Although you won the boss battle, the story continues as if you didn't win.

Heads I Win: You lose to the boss, Game Over. You beat the boss, you get thrashed anyway.

Here is the thread for duplicate tropes.
