yeah I'm kind of thinking of that. people also make it sound like Nani abandoned Lilo, which I don't really know about since I haven't exactly seen the ending and it could be very different from how people who haven't seen it perceive it when hearing about that

For a bit more positive talk, one curiously deleted scene from the original film, Gantu's Challenge
, shows a bit more of Gantu that was cut from the original film, including showing that his attempts to hunt Stitch personally were a straight-up Cowboy Cop maneuver, showing further WHY the Grand Councilwoman retired/fired him from his post, aside from endangering Lilo. Coupled with the original version of the climax where the showdown was had at a city it kinda makes Gantu's firing more reasonable.
I haven't seen that much of the tv shows (I did catch most of Leroy and stitch though) but I liked that they implied gantu had a crush on the grand councilwoman. Gives him a little more depth and motivation to prove himself to her. But on the whole I didn't find him that necessary of a character. He was just sort of there to be your Saturday morning inept villain.

Jumba was fired before they destroyed the house and had it not been for the rescue attempt Gantu would have taken off with just Lilo.
One reason I think some people have a problem with the plot line involving the ending is that it's a bit of an Unfortunate Implication. Lilo and Nani are indigenous Hawaiians, and there's a long history of indigenous children being taken away from their families in a systematic attempt to destroy their culture. It even occurs now, with groups like CPS, with the "justification" that they're better off with families who can "care for them".
I feel like if it'd be one thing if it were, say, a white non-Hawaiian family originally from California taking Lilo in or something, but the people who took Lilo in are also indigenous Hawaiians who literally live right next door to her.
Maybe I’m missing something here, and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but does the argument that the ending is making light of something that is a legitimate indigenous culture-harming IRL issue really have a leg to stand on? I’m not trying to minimize the actual IRL issue here, I’m just trying to wrap my head around it.

"Hey, least I didn't lose all my artistic talent when I crash landed in the arena here."Except this isn't actually what happens in the film, and most of the people saying this aren't actually Hawaiian and don't actually know what they're talking about.
I did run into a rather blistering response to this from an actual Hawaiian recently, regarding what cultural things it actually resonates with from a Hawaiian perspective:
Truncated a bit, but yeah.

I love the new ending. Nani doesn't have to give up her dreams to work a boring job. She can go to college and pursue her interests while still visiting, loving and caring for Lilo as a sister rather than a mom whene she's simply not yet ready to do that full time. David gets to be a bigger part of the ohana and everyone is happy.

And they still see each other using portal gun.
But this is still my preferred Lilo & Stich ending with Uncle Jumba and Uncle Peakley.
And I still prefer Jumba being persuaded to turn good by Stich.
I missed that Lilo seemingly made up with the hula girls in the ending montage. Shame what I saw of the sequels mertle and her gang were still brats. Though Leroy and stitch does give mertle a reason to be upset (her parents are divorced and her father left and is never coming back.) Nowhere near as sad as Lilo and Nani trauma, but still bad for a kid to go through.

Still, there's also the matter that they simply could have not went with that as the ending.
