Non-Human Non-Binary has a pretty straightforward title, but its description talks about they ways it can be used: to dehumanise non-binary people, or as a metaphor for the discrimination non-binary people face, or to emphasise how a species is different from humans. However, there are a lot of zero-context examples that amount to, "one non-human character in a cast full of non-humans is non-binary", such as these:

  • Neopets: Umbra Penn, owner of the Styling Studio, is a non-binary Lutari (an otter-like Neopet) who uses they/he pronouns, as confirmed at GDC 2024.
  • Battle Kitty: Kitty is a gender-nonconforming cat.
  • On Madagascar: A Little Wild, Odee is a non-binary okapi.
  • Ridley Jones: Fred, played by non-binary actor iris menas, is a non-binary bison.

All of these characters being non-binary is incidental, and has nothing to do with their species or the subtext. I think the only time this trope could wount in a cast of non-humans is in Xenofiction where a given species has a different concept of gender, but what do you think?

(Also, I think this has a lot of overlap with Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous.)

[up]I agree 100%. If a work has a lot of non-humans and only one or two are non-binary (and they're not, say, a different species from the rest of the cast), that defeats the entire point of the trope.

If this warrants TRS, I'd suggest renaming this trope "Non-Binary Other" or something.

Think we should add to it Square Peg, Round Trope?
