I think the contrast between the straight couple kissing and the gay couple hugging in the same frame demonstrates the double standard. Also, it's pretty easy to infer that it's a couple again given the immediate comparison.

I think “well, how do we know they’re a gay couple?” is splitting hairs a bit; like I said, they’re being contrasted with another couple, and I’m of the opinion that we can lean on the trope itself for some context.

Strongly agree with all the other sentiments (right down to "this is a terrifically strong image and I never thought I'd see it in IP"); I'll also add that the title and caption also say 'gay' so if a reader sees those and doesn't connect the dots that those two are a gay couple...I think that's on them.
I've also gone ahead and upgraded the image.

The trope is about a homosexual interactions are hidden or removed. But the picture is merely just people hugging each other.
Without the knowledge of the work, you wouldn't know they're in relationship.
