The first sentence says (bolding from me):
"A plot device, such as a weapon (usually biological, chemical or nuclear) or a natural agent (like a plague/virus), which drastically reduces the human population in size while leaving a few charismatic survivors."
It then goes on to talk about the writing, budget, and artistic reasons for doing this. Hence my take is the trope isn't about the method, but the plot impact.
I was going to suggest moving the image to a "last man on Earth"-type trope, but I guess this is that trope. That's a slightly unintuitive name in my opinion, but keep.

I tried to find a map of casualty rates for the T-Virus from the Resident Evil movie franchise, but most results seem to be designs for t-shirts. =/ I think I may be misremembering, but I really thought there was an map of it in the intro to one of them.
