Nameless, The Village's Stone Structure

"Apologies, but no." Nameless tells the villager. "Simply looking around. What is this structure for?" he asks, pointing to the castle-like thing next to him.

Nameless' Cat, The Village

The soul couldn't really vocalize unless Nameless wanted it to, but it served as his eyes well enough, and he sees two passengers chopping wood and four of them talking outside the village. Upon looking at the other cat, Nameless stifled a chuckle as the soul cat moved towards the orange cat. The soul rolled over and yawned (without sound), and stared at the other cat.

Sinaar Lekhidur, Train Station

There was a lot going on. Sinaar was frustrated, mad at Rakan for being so blasé about her emotional state, hurt by the snack cart woman lying by omission to her, and above all, really, really confused. This all affected the normally quick-thinking Sinaar enough that she didn't manage to get a word out until Aquos showed up.

Aquos was clearly not tokhl, but he was much closer to tokhl ideas of aliens than anything else Sinaar had encountered so far: unusually-colored biomass that could only barely keep form and couldn't develop a surface.

The relatively familiar sight helped Sinaar return to her normal self a little, but she didn't consciously realize, and so she just stood wondering what to say to this guy. Eventually she settled on a simple, "...Hello."

Suggested wine pairing: pinot noir.

Checking out the church, with Nameless.

NPCs: Some blocky villagers.

"Oh, that's our church. We pray there sometimes, or use it for shelter since it's the sturdiest building in town," the villager answered in a casual tone.

In town with Nameless' cat.

NPCs: Some blocky villagers, a blocky cat.

Other than its head tilting down to keep looking at Nameless' cat, the blocky cat's body seemed rather static. It let out another confused meow, then turned, its legs finally moving as it walked down one of the streets.

The station/edge of town, with Red and Sinaar.

NPCs: Bowean the Pixie, Rakan the little goblin-like guy, Aquos the shapeshifter, other background passengers, and some blocky villagers.

When Red offered his assistance, Rakan looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "That depends, you wouldn't happen to be a therapist who likes to dress up like a cowboy, would you?" Rakan wondered, and glanced at Bowean.

Bowean peered through her glasses for a moment at Red, then shook her head. "No, he's a bounty hunter type," she informed Rakan.

"Oh, well you can still try to help if you want to, I suppose," Rakan said, looking at Red and giving him a shrug.

Meanwhile, Aquos angled his tendril towards Sinaar. "Yyyeah, hi," he muttered in that awkward, 'I do not really care but I have to pretend to care I guess,' tone. Then his tendril angled down and back up. "You're a shapeshifter? What's with walking around looking like a solid?" Aquos wondered in a confused tone.

"Well she's clearly more comfortable with that, Aquos," Bowean pointed out in a disapproving tone. "Maybe you should think before spouting off in a way that could be seen as condescending."

Aquos' surface rippled as he let out a slightly exasperated sigh. "Fine, sorry," he apologized, his tone annoyed, yet the apology seemed genuine regardless. His mass stretched upwards and parts of it changed color, until he was standing in the form of a bald, dark skinned man wearing the same dark purple train staff uniform as Rakan and Bowean. (Though no other clothes, meaning he was barefoot.) At first his facial features were very bland and looked uncanny, but over the course of a couple moments they became more defined until he looked like a normal if fairly unremarkable Human.

"Alright, is that-" Aquos started, though his mouth had not moved at all. "Mmnph, right, keep forgetting about this part," he thought out loud, his mouth moving as he talked. The movements didn't perfectly line up with the words he was sounding though, which made it seem a bit weird if one were paying attention. "Is that better?" he asked, facing towards Sinaar, though his eyes did not seem to actually be focused on her.

Nameless' Cat, The Village

The soul meowed silently, its form slumping slightly as the cat left. It then, however, perked up again to head towards where it saw two groups, one of four passengers outside the village, and a group of two in a grove. It tilted its head in mock thought before eventually deciding to head to the larger group.

Nameless, The Village Church

"It's a nice church." Nameless says absentmindedly. "If I may, what do you shelter yourselves from?" Nameless asks the helpful villager, looking around at the small, blocky. yet idyllic town. "You seem to be above the clouds themselves, away from any potential invaders. For that matter, for who or what is the church for?" he steps closer to the villager as he spoke more and more.

Storm - In the island grove with Colette

"Probably something going on near the train," said Storm as they got right back to planting saplings. "It sure is full of characters. They probably have it under control."

Sapling planting proved an almost meditative process. Interacting hands-on with the wild world like this was an uncommon memory for Storm. Back on Noahsland, access to nature was restricted to a handful of reserves, either for the native plants and animals or ones successfully introduced and acclimatised from other planets. Either that, or nature was taken over for farming or extracting resources (Storm would know; the Spirehomes, including the one they lived in, were situated not too far away from a mine). So, Storm made sure to take in every sensory detail, from the brush of the grass against their hands and feet to the hearty, spicy scent of the trees, with a pack of perfumes from other plants clambering through from deeper in the woods, campaigning for their attention.

The atmosphere was still for a while as Storm and Colette worked. Too still.

Storm decided that now would be a good time to try and learn a bit more about Colette's circumstances. Not every day one gets to spend time with a person who fixes worlds for a living.

"...Say," they uttered, breaking the silence, "You didn't happen to have any colleagues in the world-fixing business, did you? Or, at least, anyone you'd call a friend?"

Red, The station/edge of town

Apologetically putting his hat to his chest, Red said “Unfortunately, I am no therapist, so this lil’ problem ya got goin’ on here ain’t for me. I dunno, try takin’ deep breaths or somethin’? Don’t even know what’s really goin’ on here anyways. Best be on my way.” Putting his hat back on, tipping it, and leaving, he began walking in the direction of the town. Maybe I’ll find out more ‘bout this weird lil’ world, he thought to himself. As he walked, he ran into one of the villagers. With a tip of his hat and in his most polite voice, he said “Howdy, stranger. Might I ask what’s the name of this here village, and your name as well?” He was smiling, but his hand hovered near his gun just in case. He’d been tricked by monsters too many times to fully trust any stranger, and dammit, he wasn’t gonna stop now!

Colette, Island grove

She did think that the train area would be the most likely spot for the source of the shouting all things considered.

"That would be the most likely case according to what I know."

And then Storm asked about her old life. A life that she wants back. If the train ever stops in her world... she's going to be able to reconnect to the right place, even if she does not come back to life.

"Colleagues, yes. Friends. no. To simply state it, we were coworkers and nothing more. Except for those who were in active relationships or married to each other. Those are done by choice from all involved."

Blocky Town

"...How would we even find something like that around here? If this is a dream world, do we just...dream it up?" Yukino asked, looking like she was honestly considering attempting it while she was looking at Kyrtaar and Arion to see if they had any ideas.

Into the blocky town, with Yukino, Arion, and Nameless' cat.

NPCs: Kyrtaar the Dark Elf mobster, some blocky villagers, and the so-called Prince of Rain.

"Well as I said, this isn't my dream, so I have no control of it," the Prince of Rain said with a shrug. "Traveling into other dreams is not a power I cultivated in this life, which is why I assumed someone must have brought me here."

"Well it ain't any of us that's doing the dreaming, I can tell you that," Kyrtaar responded, looking at Yukino as she glanced at him for ideas. "We could try going back to the train maybe," the Dark Elf suggested.

"Train?" the Prince of Rain wondered.

"Yeah, the train we arrived on. Uh, chances are you won't be capable of coming on board, but the staff might be able to bring something out," Kyrtaar explained in response.

"Sounds like a trap you could be leading me into," the Prince of Rain said nonchalantly, and put on a small, smug smile. "I'd be happy to see it."

Kyrtaar looked back at the so-called prince and blinked once. "... Did you mean to say that first part out loud?" the Dark Elf wondered after a moment.

"Yes," the Prince of Rain answered simply.

Checking out the church, with Nameless.

NPCs: Some blocky villagers.

"Hmm? From whatever dangers, just in case," the villager answered Nameless for the first question, then tilted his head down slightly. "And uh... The church is for us?" he added in a somewhat confused tone, like he didn't understand why Nameless would have asked that, but was still being polite. Alas that it was not possible to read a facial expression to go with the tone.

The station/edge of town, with Red and Sinaar.

NPCs: Bowean the Pixie, Rakan the little goblin-like guy, Aquos the shapeshifter, other background passengers, and some blocky villagers.

"Alright, you have fun now," Rakan said to Red, before turning his attention back to the situation with Sinaar.

When Red approached one of the blocky villagers, the villager turned to face him. "Hmm? This is our village, and I am a villager," the villager replied in a friendly tone, as if that answered the question even though it obviously didn't. "Do you want to trade? I have leather," the blocky figure then added.

Red, station/edge of town

Red raised an eyebrow. The villager didn’t seem to be any threat, but his suspicions weren’t alleviated just yet. And he didn’t even get an answer! He tried again. “What I meant was, what’s the name of the village? Y’know, it’s gotta have a name.” What kind of village doesn’t have a name anyways? But no matter. The villager asked for trade. Red stroked his beard in thought. He had no need for leather now, but nothing was stopping him. Heck, he could go into the village and maybe make something out of it. Reaching into his pockets, he took out a box of about 50 cigars. A celebration treat, now… nothing. He took out 5.

“Sure, I’ll trade ya leather… for these. Finest cigars this side o’ the Mississippi! Wherever that may be. Whaddya say? How much’ll that get me?”

White Void

The leaky ceiling.

That was the last thing Farmer Hound remembered seeing before closing his eyes and drifting off to...sleep?

The farmdog scratched his head and tried to remember. It didn't seem much like he was falling asleep, the last he remembered. No, normally when all his friends and relations gathered around his bed like that, it was either April Fool's or they wanted money.

No, he hadn't been nodding off last time he remembered staring up at his leaky ceiling from his bed. Junior was supposed to have fixed that leak awhile back.

No matter now, especially because, as best Farmer Hound, could guess, he was dead. It certainly didn't look like anything Hound remembered while he was alive - all the air and space around him were white.

Wait.

That wasn't quite true. There looked to be a door right in front of him. Wait a minute. Was that a train door? Hound couldn't say he was the bravest of braves but he was willing to chance whatever was behind that door. It sure beat hanging around all this white. Which might not even be white - his colorblindness might be lying to him again.

The door didn't need Farmer Hound to push it - it opened up by itself. Bracing for the worst, Hound closed his eyes and stepped forward into a new train and a new adventure...

Storm - In the island grove with Colette

As Storm continued to plant saplings, they could've sworn they could sense a shift in Colette's disposition when they asked her about her world. A determination to see it again, maybe. Admirable if true. In fact, Storm thought, if she was patient, then she may well see that dream realised. The train stopped at a menagerie of worlds, so it wasn't as if finding hers was out of the question.

"At the very least," Storm then asked with a tilt of the head, "Is there anyone from your world that you miss? Or wish was here with you?" They couldn't lie — the idea of going through one's whole life without a single friend was alien to them. Even when Colette described relationships and marriages, they sounded more like convenient arrangements than strong connections between people.

"I only ask because..." They straightened up and onto their feet, hearing the grass crunch beneath them once, twice, before they continued. "Listen, this experience so far has been great and I'd take it over the alternative a centillion times over. But it only occurred to me recently that I've left behind every friend I've ever made. My family, too... All those bonds, every memory we shared and adventure we've endeavoured. Gone." They glanced down at their wedding ring before grasping it between their fingertips, a whisper of the world's earth finding its way onto the band. "I-I'm not gonna let it ruin my journey, absolutely no, but it's something I have to deal with."

Colette, island grove with Storm

Well... by a certain definition, yes. She got the vague connections (seen) that Storm considered that her people saw relationships. Not entirely wrong, but not entirely right.

"I have living family members, but no siblings. By your definition of family, yes I do miss them. We have a different idea of relationships that mortals are unable to understand. As far as we (And by that, Colette means her species. She made that part VERY clear.) are concerned, relationships are formed for a mutual benefit for all involved parties."

She glanced at Storm's wedding ring- married. That would explain why they asked that question. Mortals... are mortals.

"Memories are not forgotten so easily you know. Your family will not easily forget the memories of you. I'm fairly certain of that much."

She does not interrupt her tree cutting while talking.

The station/edge of town, with Red and Sinaar.

NPCs: Bowean the Pixie, Rakan the little goblin-like guy, Aquos the shapeshifter, other background passengers, and some blocky villagers.

"Cigars?" the villager asked in a confused tone, their head leaning down a little to look at the offered items. "I haven't heard of these... Maybe, even then? Five pieces of leather?" the blocky figure then offered, holding up one arm. At the end, where the 'hand' seemingly was, an item suddenly appeared as if out of thin air; it appeared to be nearly two-dimensional, and resembled the shape of a full, tanned animal hide, but no more than six inches in height.

An empty passenger car, with Farmer Hound.

NPCs: None.

Farmer Hound would find himself entering one of the passenger cars, from one of the doors on the left side. That door closed behind him, but directly in front of him, the opposite boarding door on the right side was still open, and through it he would see the view of the odd, blocky landscape and islands floating in the sky in the distance. He would also see a number of the blocky villagers, and the not blocky other passengers; not that he would know they were also passengers at that moment, of course.

As for the inside of the passenger car, it was mostly empty. There was a figure opening the door at the rear end of the car and stepping onto the little walkway to the next car. They did not notice Farmer Hound's entry, and thus didn't stop to address him. As they went into the next car, through the two open doors Farmer Hound would see a glimpse of the diner car.

Red, edge of town

Red tilted his head. This guy was weird. Not in some “he’s trying to disguise himself as human” way, just… weird. Regardless, he focused on the task at hand. “Uh… sure, five pieces of… leather for your one. Seems like a fair deal.” He handed the cigars to the villager and took the leather. Red took a look at the leather in his hand. It looked… odd. Almost looked like a pelt, except that it was smaller and well, leather. Well, beggars can’t be choosers. Tipping his hat to the villager, he said “Thanks for the trade, partner. Be seein’ ya.” With that, he continued his walk to the village. Maybe he’ll trade this leather for something else. Or he could just make shoes or whatever.

"...Wonder if that would work for the rest of us." Yukino thought aloud as she started to walk back towards the train with Kyrtaar, Arion and the Prince of Rain in tow. You could tell people about it, but seeing it would make it more impressive for your audience, right?" Yukino elaborated, wondering what sort of stories she could share. "Oh, so he can keep form, he just doesn't want to," Sinaar muttered, not realizing she'd just said that out loud.

"Well, you look more like us now, but unless there's a secret stash of tokhl somewhere Bowean doesn't know about I don't think any of you are going to be able to help me," Sinaar stated matter-of-factly. "This place is just so bizarre..."

"By the way, how are you speaking without using your mouth? That's what we do," she added. She was interested in getting some more knowledge on how Aquos's kind worked, but she was a little nervous that at some point things would stop making sense again and everything would fall apart.

The edge of town near the station, with Red, Yukino, Arion, and (maybe) Nameless' cat.

NPCs: Kyrtaar the Dark Elf mobster, the so-called Prince of Rain, Rosepetal the Floran girl, other background passengers, and some blocky villagers.

"Thanks," the blocky villager said, the cigars popping into their hand, which they then stared at. "... What do I do with these?" they muttered as Red walked away.

Ahead of Red, the group of Yukino, Arion, Kyrtaar, and the so-called Prince of Rain were approaching the train. Kyrtaar looked at Yukino and gave a nod. "Oh yeah, they got magic books in the library car that can do stuff like that, but it's uh..." The Dark Elf trailed off and turned his head away, before adding a slightly dodgy tone, "not always reliable."

"Huh, so there really is a train," the Prince of Rain commented in a mildly surprised tone as they got within sight of the train. A certain young Floran girl excitedly ran past into the town, giggling and swinging a wooden toy sword above her head. The Prince of Rain raised an eyebrow as he watched her go by. "This is giving me, 'cruise ship vacation tourists' vibes," he thought out loud.

"That's..." Kyrtaar started, but trailed off. "... Actually kind of accurate, now that I think about it."

The station, with Sinaar.

NPCs: Bowean the Pixie, Rakan the little goblin-like guy, Aquos the shapeshifter, other background passengers, and some blocky villagers.

"We may not be Tokhl, miss, but we can still try to help you. That is our job," Bowean said, in a slightly worried but trying to be reassuring tone.

"Yeah, you'd be surprised the number of services we can provide," Rakan added in, with a toothy grin.

Aquos meanwhile stood there a moment, before his face took on an exaggerated expression of surprise and incredulity; one that a normal human would probably struggle to accomplish. "That's what you do? You mean, you actually talk like a solid? Taking in air and pushing it out through a mouth-hole?" he asked, his mouth movements still not quite matching up with the sound. "I make part of my body work like a speaker system. I think it's a lot better, personally," the shapeshifter explained simply, his face returning to a more neutral expression.

Sinaar Lekhidur, Train Station

"Well, can you explain why there are no other tokhl, then!?" Sinaar said, losing her temper slightly (although she wasn't mad at Bowean or Rakan, exactly, just the situation). "There are over six billion of us, and that's just the ones that are alive right now! We have millennia of history!"

Then, Aquos expressed surprise at Sinaar's use of the standard way of making sound (aliens, gotta love 'em), and explained that he used a speaker system. Sinaar, perfectly recalling the earlier conversation with Rosepetal and the cart woman about speakers, was intrigued. "Oh, you form a speaker? We don't actually have those where I'm from...How do they work, exactly?"

Storm - In the island grove with Colette

Storm nodded along as Colette explained her kind's interpersonal customs. A mutual benefit, huh... More than can be said for some human relationships, that was for sure. They'd be fascinated to learn more about her world, but they knew better than to rush her. The last thing they wanted was for her to feel as if she were being interrogated. Still, her assurance that their loved ones would cherish their memory lifted a weight from their shoulders.

"Thanks, Colette." They carried on plant saplings as they spoke. "I'd like to think someone back home is raising a glass in my honour as we speak."

That is, if they were around to do so.

"The thing is," they continued "I tried to ask the tour guide about what happened to my husband and kids. I still don't know if they survived the disaster that killed me. Everything happened so fast, and I did what I could, but..." They shook their head before whispering to themself: "Keep it light, Storm, keep it light."

Storm's eyes then landed on the wood that Colette was picking up. They rested their left hand below their chin as they contemplated its characteristics.

"When we're finished here, is there any chance I could take some of that wood back with me? Just one piece?" Knowing Colette would question their motives, they added: "I've decided that I'm going to bring back something from each of the worlds we visit and try to make something new out of it."

Storm's worry about her family is still there, but lessened. The state of their family though? That's unknown. After some thinking she opts for honestly.

"I do not know what happened to your family, and it is likely that the train will never find out for reasons that elude me. But I choose to believe that there's a good chance they are still alive for your sake. If the train can't find them, then they could be alive."

Still cutting down trees as she talks.

That requires no effort to consider her answer in regards to losing a single piece of wood. She has extra saplings to get more wood later, and the net gain is worth it.

"Go ahead, that would be fine with me."

She gives the piece of wood in her hand to Storm without any hesitation.

Red, Edge of Town

He had been walking for a bit, pondering the leather in his hand. It’d be a nice souvenir, that’s for sure, but what to actually do with it? He could trade it for something else, or maybe make something out of it, but what? Curious… He continued walking, until he spotted a group of people. Oh, they were from the train! And a few others, too. He waved them down and walked over. “Howdy, y’all. What seems to be the hold up here? Can I help?”

The station, with Sinaar.

NPCs: Aquos the shapeshifter, other background passengers, and some blocky villagers.

Rakan gave Sinaar a shrug. "Lady, like I said, it's random. If anybody was ever gonna slip out of your world to the train, then somebody would have to be the first, and it would seem that's you. Either no other Tokhl have slipped out of your world upon death, or any that have did so before the train was in operation," he explained again, relatively casually. He then put on a more grim expression and said in a dead serious tone, "and if that happened, well, I hope for their sake that they ended up somewhere good for them."

After that, with his exaggerated facial expressions, Aquos had this look of understanding with a bit of criticism mixed in. "You don't have them? Wait, let me guess; your people are so used to using shapeshifting for everything, you haven't bothered inventing tools and whatnot," he said, then shook his head and muttered in a sarcastic tone, "boy, what a keeper."

"Anyway, I could explain, but I've got maintenance to do," Aquos continued, turning towards Rakan. The little goblin-like figure's expression had eased back into his usual demeanor, and he looked at Aquos with a somewhat mischievous and toothy smirk.

"Ah ah Aquos, you know that our first priority as staff of the Cosmic Express is to our passengers," Rakan said in a devilish and smug tone. "And don't you worry. I'll get your exemption notice from your regular duties personally! I'll even do it now!" he continued, turning and walking back towards the train while starting to laugh.

"Oh, Rakan you, you," Bowean muttered quietly in a frustrated tone, then let out a sigh and turned to Aquos. "Sorry Aquos, you are the best suited for this- and I need to continue talking with Rakan," the Pixie mentioned apologetically, then flew off to follow Rakan. "Rakan! I'm not done talking to you about the recent influx..." Her voice became less and less audible as she got farther away, until it could no longer be picked out as the two entered the nearby train car.

Aquos stared at where the two had gone, his face had... Apparently it reverted to a less detailed form, being mostly blank and featureless except for the shape of two very large, wide open eyes staring at the train car. Then his whole form rippled and shuddered as he let out a drawn out, exasperated sigh. "Alright, fine," he said, then collapsed down as he shifted his form. In a couple of moments, he became a mostly transparent, roughly two foot wide cube sitting on the ground. In the middle of the cube were the internal components of a typical speaker system, made the right size to fit just inside of the cube.

"So, sound is waves of vibrations through the particles in the air. Most solids- and you- make those waves by pushing air through an orifice and shaping the orifice to get the proper tones," Aquos started explaining, the parts of the speaker moving as he was in fact using them to speak."But if you make parts of your body mimic the right materials, and vibrate them at the right speeds, you can achieve the same effect and more. Such as making sounds that solids can't with their bodies." He then paused his explanation to play a short bit of music from himself.

Aquos then started making parts of the speaker system transparent to highlight specific bits, like a three dimensional blueprint video. All while getting into the technical explanations of exactly how a shapeshifter such as himself made it work, that the author of this sentence cannot get into due to a lack of expertise on the exact internal workings of speakers.

Kyrtaar eyed Red curiously, making note of the guns on him. "Not really a hold up; we're just headed back to the train," the Dark Elf said casually, then motioned at the so-called Prince of Rain. "This guy's not actually a passenger; he's someone asleep and in this dream world the normal way. He wanted to show us stuff from his life, to, uh..."

"It was you lot who expressed interest in seeing proof that I do not have the same temperament while awake as I do while asleep," the Prince of Rain answered, his voice still sounding like a downpour of rain mixed with a normal voice. "Personally, I don't really care what you think of me. I am curious to see this train though," he added, folding his arms.

"... Yeah, that I guess," Kyrtaar continued after a moment, turning his attention back to Red.
