My main reason for supporting it is that, given the age, I feel like it definitely wasn't intended to be seen as gay. But that may not come across in the image itself. (Granted, the show is somewhat newer than I'd assumed)

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallThe cartoon is from the 80s, which I don't think is an era where gay stereotypes were known and/or accepted (correct me if I'm wrong, though). The context is supposed to be that Brainy Smurf thinks Lazy Smurf is about to die, so the kiss - even if it's out of left field - was most likely not supposed to be deliberately gay, more like an "everything is fine" type of reassurance while Brainy alerts everyone of Lazy's supposed demise so the latter doesn't get alarmed. The episode is on YouTube so I've taken a little time to timestamp it
in case it helps, as the votes to pull seem to be without knowing the exact context.
I don't doubt that, but this should work without knowing the context and it doesn't.

Following up on here
. Two characters seems to intentional for this trope.
