What do you guys think of indie animation? Stuff like Hazbin Hotel and Lackadaisy.

I personally love the idea of independent individuals raising money to create their own cartoons that come from the heart instead of following a popular trend or using a known license.

Though it looks like, from what little I know so far, that indie animation comes in three forms:

  • People create something small and release that on YouTube, to get known. They can then use that fame to raise money or attract a company's financing.
  • People create a known webcomic, and from there, either raise money through Kickstarter to make an animated version or get the attention of a big company who pays for the cartoon to get made.

Some of these indie animations end up freely watchable on YouTube, which I think is just great, as it allows us to avoid having to sign up for a streaming service to have to watch them.

Here's one example, a pilot for a sci-f animated series named Godspeed:

Part of me thinks this should be under New Media, but I will leave that up to the mods.

I always have some respect for Indie stuff via just how far the creators can go with their talent. Does that always mean every bit of it will be for everyone? No, there's plenty of indie animation that's not my cup of tea, but that's okay.
