Iwájú is a miniseries and collaboration between Disney animation and the African storytelling collective Kugali.

“Iwájú” is an original animated series set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The exciting coming-of-age story follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.

As I said, this should have been a full movie instead of a Disney+ miniseries.

Fun fact: Disney's animated theatrical movies have been set in Africa several times but have never depicted an actual African human being as of yet.

So yeah, I kind of wish this was a movie too. I've always felt The Ear, the Eye and the Arm would've made a great Disney film, and this hits a lot of similar feels what with both being afrofuturist stories for kids about rich kids being kidnapped and rescued.

[up][up]Funny that I heard people saying the opposite about Raya and the Last Dragon, that it would have worked better as a series than as a movie.

[up][up][up]Ironic how the Moana show was the one that got bumped up from TV show to movie while Iwaju didn't. Almost as if they think an original idea won't be a profitable movie.

Considering their last 2 original animated movies bombed I think they're taking a break from originals for a while. Which sucks, I'd rather see this as a big budget movie rather than Frozen 3 and 4.
