PSN account overall is pretty meaningless for most people, MS games require a MS account.
The only problem is it essentially region locks HD 2 since you can only make a PSN account in 90 out of 195 countries.

I don't really see the issue here. It's not like they're forcing PC players to pay for PS Plus or anything. How is this different from, say, needing an Xbox account to play Sea of Thieves on PC? (Aside from the security concerns, that's understandable)
yeah, exactly.

Wenn sie die Ente hierein lassen, lasse ich das Wasser hieraus!Been following the recent "controversy" and it really is just a giant ball of nothing. All of this noise and fervor for making a PSN login and linking it once. Like every major multiplayer game (and several single-player ones!) has for at least...what, 5+ years now? Likely longer than that? The "It's about the principal in not wanting to give Sony my email account + what if Sony has another data breach" take is especially funny considering the game has kernel-level anti-cheat.
The only legitimate issue IMO is region-locking...except Sony has never actually given a shit about people having off-region accounts (and arguably has always benefited from not enforcing it) so there's no actual resistance in making a US account or something if you need to. Very awkward and non-kosher and Sony really should just rip the band-aid off if they don't care but yeah.

All my payment stuff is via Paypal. I think the one time I tried to use an actual card it was a gift card and it didn't even work.
Also again the game runs a kernel-level anti-cheat. A lot of the hand-wringing over giving Sony an email login honestly rings hollow to me when the game is actively scanning your internal system and could potentially legit damage it if something fucks up.
The Scrappy of the Trope Pantheon, God of Thumps
apparently on the helldivers subreddit, a Chinese player who tried to use a VPN to link a Playstation account got banned from the game. A ban from Sony, it says
So yeah, this aint a nothingburger and people cant play the game like that instance. And no, trying to deny the posts as a potential lie to confirm predisposed beliefs on Sony not being that bad shouldnt be seen as a good response. That has the same mood as Blizzard telling me “Dont you have phones” and I dont even play this game

Been digging more into the China and UK issues and while those are legit issues they're not, like, uniquely PSN issues. The China one is the case of someone being banned for using a VPN (although Steam is generally available in China certain features like Steam Community aren't) and the UK one is a case of a UK law requiring some additional authentication and the user in question opting out of providing a cell phone number (ironically running straight into the Blizzard meme). And then there's the Puerto Rico case which is just people not knowing what US territories are. So where I'm at is like...how the hell is this only popping up now, have people really just been sliding through other games from MS and whoever this whole time without issues or what.
Lot of the places I look the core issue is this being "introduced" post-launch at all, despite it being openly advertised as required and despite it actually being there at launch only to get pulled down during that week or two when the servers were all going to shit. I've seen a ton of people go "it'd be fine if this was at launch, the problem is springing this up now all of a sudden" completely oblivious to those pieces, people who probably jumped in a lot later (if not just now or at all) and didn't really pay attention beyond skipping through past the buy and play buttons. So the actual lesson here is that once the genie comes out of the bottle you don't ever get to put it back in, be it a price tag, an account link, a strip of fabric on a costume, anything.
It's a shame because account linking has been normalized in part because it's legit helpful in facilitating cross-play and cross-progression. Helldivers seemingly had to throw together a custom cross-play thing without the account link...and in my experience it probably explains why it can be a bit jank at times compared to other games. And if they had any cross-progression plans they might as well scuttle it, maybe redirect to more content drops or something.
Here's hoping people remember that Ghost of Tsushima has a multiplayer mode.

Maybe at the very least Sony will take notice of the uproar and reconsider implementing the change (I have noticed a trend in recent months of large companies rolling back heavily disliked planned changes to media if enough people make a big enough stink), though maybe that's just wishful thinking that people Thunderer barraging the game's Steam reviews into the ground will actually accomplish something.
Wenn sie die Ente hierein lassen, lasse ich das Wasser hieraus!I have legitimately seen some people claiming that this is going to "kill the game" and that this is the "end of Helldivers II". This is obviously hyperbolic, right? This will definitely drive away a chunk of the playerbase (at least until a compromise or concession can be reached), but a game that is this well regarded and that so many people are invested in the story of isn't just going to have its fanbase disappear overnight because of something like this.
(I am including myself as someone invested in the game's narrative despite not playing it myself. Contributing to the game's recap page has been some of the most fun I've had on this site and I'd really hate to see it left hanging.)

Y'know what, I still think this whole thing is really overblown but good on Steam for doing that. If people want their money back then let them get their money back, especially if this truly a game-breaking dealbreaker for people.
Legit curious to see how this impacts the playerbase overall. The narrative and reputation the PC version of this game is building is really bad and the Steam reviews being perma-fucked will only help cement it in the long run. I can actually see PC numbers dip once the account link requirement becomes official - it'll kick noise back up, remind people this is happening, and I can actually see a good chunk of PC players bailing. Whether or not the game can actually bounce back and how long that'd take largely depends on how well Arrowhead can keep up content drops.
Looks like the game has been delisted in countries that doesn't have PSN
If they did before, they sure ain't having it now.

Well Helldivers 2 is already getting review bombed on Steam because of the news.
