Can we roll it back to the point where one of the folks at Game Science said they prepared their Game Of The Year Award speech two freaking years in advance? That feels pretty presumptuous to me.
Self-professed Wild Card who thinks cynicism isn't so bad.Game Science can whine and moan all they want: it still doesn't change the fact that Balatro Sweep and Astro Bot Sweep were the two mounting movements the gaming community was chanting for, and that it wound up being the latter to happen (with Balatro still snagging the Indie award, because come on).
Self-professed Wild Card who thinks cynicism isn't so bad.The translation was done in Chatgpt, which makes Feng Ji seem more bitter then he really is because it doesn't understand nuance of Chinese. Feng Ji didn't say none of the other games deserve rewards over his, he's being self deprecating.
Because I honestly agree that the standards on which wins what at the awards seems to change every year for no inexplicable reason. Elden Rings DLC even being considered for GOTY is proof of that.

Watch SymphogearApparently people who speak Chinese said the translation was fairly on the mark. I actually had to look up how this game was allowed to be made since the CCP really likes to fancy itself as being every citizen's mom and bans any video games with content that might offend people over the age of 50. But apparently they're more lenient on works that promote Chinese culture.
Also someone brought up Red Dead Redemption 2 and, while it also probably shouldn't have swept the awards, is an incredible and highly impressive game thus far.

Once Upon A Time.Award shows have been cynical stealth marketing ploys since the very beginning.

Once Upon A Time.Recency bias is a thing, sure, but imagine saying an amazing game can't win just because it came out a month ago. That even worse.
You are not alone.…So if the Chinese speakers said that the translation was accurate… then yeah, preparing your speech two years in advance? Maybe not the call.
Self-professed Wild Card who thinks cynicism isn't so bad.He was saying it in a joking manner, thats what a lot of chinese speakers are saying.
Direct translation makes it seem more bitter then it is.
And writing a GOTY speech in advance only to not give one doesn't seem that uncommon to me.
Personally, the fact that that one dude talking about layoff's in the industry was actually a Tencent Hiring agent (And the fact that Geoff tried to make him seem like some small time dude who was independant) or the fact that Geoff Keighly tried to trademark the phrase Game Awards earlier in the year is far more sus to me.
That along with Elden Ring's DLC even being in the running for a GOTY award makes me side with Feng Ji on the questionable often inconsistent reasoning for why something is Nominated for or win's at Geoff's glorified commercial show.

Watch SymphogearBlack Myth looks great but somehow a lot of people bought the hype train so hard they thought it would be the second coming of christ.
I'm absolutely grabbing it once I have my PS 5 ready, but it's actually behind Steelrising on my soulslike to-play list.
You are not alone.
Gets even funnier when you find out the name of the company is Super Authenti.

The only conceivable rule I can think of is when the answer is so obvious that there's virtually no descension like with Baldur's Gate 3. That's the outlier.
