Fun Fact, Dar-Benn is a character from the 80's whose only had a total of 3 appearances before being killed off.

Yeah making her the villain over literally anyone a little bit more substantial is fairly questionable.

[up] Though the "Why isn't Emilia Clarke's character affected" is obviously explainable in that she didn't touch the space-warp barrier like Carol and Monica did.

I mean, anyone more substantial would still have to fight for spotlight against three leads and a cute cat subplot

Ronan wasn’t much of a villain either because the focus was on setting up an entire team of characters

I would argue that more could have been done her being the Savior of Hala with her people desperately loving her. But her backup dancers seem to disappear after planet musical

[up] True its a hard situation for any villain.

Hell I'm pretty sure she's the only named villain here. Like she doesn't even have a recurring lieutenant who serves as a miniboss. At least Ronan had Korath and Nebula.

There's not much to work here villain-wise. Its just Dar-Benn, generic foot soldiers, and some ships.

She had that one guy who kept telling her how cool she was

I do not remember if his name was ever said and he was the toadie kind of subordinate instead of the dragon kind

I actually liked his and Dar-ben's relationship. Like, she would clearly get mad at him, but she wasn't the kind to just straight up kill him just because he kept telling her things she didn't want to hear.

As said before I feel like it would have been interesting if they did play up her sympathetic traits more. Maybe make her an expy of the more Noble Demon version of Ronin from the comics.

I am fine with pure evil villains, some of my favorite villains are like that. High evolutionary was a phenomenal villain for example. But here I feel like making her more 3 dimensional would have served the story better.

[up]x7 That's not really a problem. Arthur Harrow had even less comic appearances and he was a good villain. Dar-Benn's problem is being incredibly generic and not doing anything interesting or memorable.

If they get another Captain Marvel they need a more popular villain and not more Kree. I wouldn't be surprised the uninspired villain this film is contributing to The Marvels disasterous box office.

[up][up] Ehhhh I kinda count Harrow on a similar level to Dar-Benn.

Both characters are very blegh in general. Granted Harrow had the advantage of more screentime to make more of an impression since he was in a TV show.

Looked up the name of Dar-Benn's chief advisor in the cast list & his name turned out to be Ty-Rone.

I mean, I really don’t care for villains. I enjoy them when they are fun, but a movie doesn’t live or die if it has a bad villain IMO.

I’m here for the leads and their dynamic.

A villain is more a showcase of the story.

So an underwhelming story sometimes signify's an underwhelming story which is kind of the case here.

Ben-Dare being simple isn't really an issue as long as the story is really tight.

Was this movie really bad? Because I was planning to watch it when it's on Disney plus.

It's definitely more enjoyable than good. But that's what I want from my MCU movies.

I mean, there's a scene full of cats (sort-of), featuring "Memory" from Cats blasting in the background.

That's probably the best bit of non-original music in a scene the MCU has had since She-Hulk and "Rude" by Shygirl.

I'd second what the others have said. It's a fun movie that, while it still has flaws, is carried by its 3 leads & still has some fun moments.

I also really enjoyed the musical planet. It's a scene that helped underscore what a pretty movie this, from the performers to the sets (I liked Kamala calling Dar-Benn "beautiful" for the same reason)

The person I saw the movie with was audibly struck by how attractive Prince Yan is.

The movie is fun. The leads are entertaining and bounce off of each other well. Id say its a movie that runs more off of vibes than anything else, though. It kinda falls apart once you start scrutinizing it, but thats not what its about.

A semi-solid 6-ish out of 10.

It's not the best but it's not awful. Its as close to a Dragonball Z live-action fight scene as I think we'll ever get with the DCEU Superman films done with.

If it weren't for Disney+ kneecapping casual viewers, I'd think this would likely get a pretty decent bump from holiday viewings in the US.

But instead I think we'll get a lot of people going "wow, glad to hear it sounds okay. Looking forward to it on Disney Plus."

I think thanks to stuff like money being tight. People are more inclined to not go for a film they don't think is good but not great or has personal nostalgia attached it like FNAF or Mario.
