Botticelli (a character guessing game)

Go To

Found this thread way back in the early pages, and never heard of the game before but it looked like fun! Basically, this is a character guessing game, but with some twists (more on wikipedia) - so read the rules carefully!

Rules

  • The host chooses a fictional character or famous person, and provides the first letter of their name:
    • For fictional characters, this means the name they're usually referred to as or best known by - for a lot of characters this is their first name, but if they're usually referred to by their last name, you'd say the first letter of their last name instead. Same goes for someone best known by their nickname, ect.
    • For real people, this is in most cases the first letter of their last name/family name, like in the "traditional" version of the game which mostly focuses on real people. The exception is if they're widely known by only their first name/given name alone, or better known by a stage name/nickname.
    • For characters whose names start with a number or other non-letter symbol, use the first letter from said number/symbol written out (for example, 9-Volt would be an "N" character for "Nine"). However, if it's a symbol that's not spoken or pronounced, go with the first letter after said symbol.
    • "Characters" can also include fictional species that aren't just one individual being (such as a Pokemon or a video game mook) as a whole, as long as they're made for a specific work/franchise.
  • The guessers then think of a character or person starting with that letter (though said character will only be revealed if the question gets stumped), and ask yes/no questions applying to said character, which can be answered in three ways:
    • No, I am not _____: If you can think of a character starting with the letter in question (and also fulfilling any direct answers if any have been made) who is not the character you have in mind. This answer will be worded the same regardless of if the question applies to your character or not, so if your letter is M and your character is Mega Man, and someone asks "Are you a video game character?" you could reply with (for example) "No, I am not Mario", another video game character starting with M, even if Mega Man is also a video game character, but you would also answer the same way if your character is not a video game character, for example Madoka Kaname.
    • Yes, I am _____: When someone guesses something applying to your character AND you can't think of another character that said thing applies to. Then, it will be the guesser's turn, regardless of if this was actually the character they were thinking about or not.
    • Stumped: When a player guesses something that does not apply to your character, and you can't think of any character this (and any past direct answers if applicable) applies to. The player in question will then reveal the character they were thinking of when asking, and can ask one direct question:
      • For direct questions, the guesser asks a yes/no question, only this time the host must answer it directly. After this, they go back to the regular indirect guessing.
      • If the character they were thinking of is, in fact, the character the host was thinking of, and their question is an accurate statement about the character, that also counts as a "yes" answer, and the guesser wins the round.
      • In rare cases, hosts can choose to make a direct answer non-binding, meaning players do not necessarily have to follow this hint for their guesses. This is usually done in cases where the answer might be a bit too vague, overly specific, could easily be misleading ect. and thus make it too hard for the players.
      • In the case that the person who asked a stumped question was thinking of a character that does not fulfill the established facts (or did not have a character in mind, which is needed to ask a question), the stump is considered invalid and the asker does not get a direct question.
      • In certain cases, some leniency can be given for the above, especially as the game goes on and the only characters left may be characters someone is aware of but don't know enough about to know if they fulfill less obvious/known traits or not - for example, one of the known facts is "has never owned a dog", and a player stumps the host with a character who has owned a dog - however, this was only for one episode and not something someone who hasn't watched said episode or much of said show could be expected to know.
  • The host must keep track of any direct questions answered and any characters they have mentioned it not being. They must also repost said info whenever the round gets a new page.
  • When answering, keep in mind that the questions and characters thought of can only account for the info known at the time of asking - if any new direct answers or stumps in an answer post contradict a character that would otherwise apply for indirect questions in the same post, these characters can still be used (for host's answers or players revealing stump characters). It's recommended to leave direct answers for last to prevent confusion.
  • If it's been 24+ hours since the last answer or question, anyone can ask the host a direct question to prevent the game from dying or going too slow. The host may also give out free hints at any time if they feel the game is going slow.
  • About asking for hints: Players are allowed to occasionally ask the host to give them a hint if they feel stuck (though preferably do this sparingly), however the host is not obligated to give these. Hint requests and answers do also not count towards the timer for the 24 hours mentioned above.

Well, I believe this is the moment I reveal I was thinking of K1-B0, and we establish the character you're thinking of is in fact, not non-organic, yes?

Does your character have magic powers?

I mean, while it isn't answered directly, it can pretty much be established from my "don't know" answer, so yeah. (And gah, can't believe I didn't remember him...)

But to answer your question: I'd say yes, kind of? At least sometimes

Known facts:

  • Starts with K
  • Not non-organic
  • Can use some kind of magic

It's not:
