IMO the only way Sparda's actions make sence in this new continuty is that 2000 years ago it was WAY easier to decide who to save if you can't just save anyone (which is perfectly plausible for high-ranked officer) - as is demon commoners (which look just like Minbari or other "funny forehead" humans and could have easily been the descendants of human slaves which were left behind when the worlds separated) in worst case (when they are demons like Echidna and co, just humanlike) surpassed the run of the mill Roman or Egyptian or Gaulish or Olmek soldier of the period too much.
2000 years later things are not so clear cut because humanity has guns and all this fancy stuff. The balance swung the other way.
By the way, there is something fishy with the White Rabbit going on. His actions benefit Mundus first and foremost, including "little victorious war" on demonkind as an excuse for entire demonhood to rally around Mundus. But that's conspiracy, and the fishy part is that Dante starts suffociating on Makai Realm air like after less than a minute, yet apparently normal human boy lived and thrived in this realm for fucking ten years with but a makeshift cloth on the face. Portal making genius is also too convenient.

I personally thought it was great.
And much like in the first season of Castlevania, the VP being a rabid fundamentalist is very much not an anti-religion critique. It would be an anti-religion critique if more people were like that, but he specifically was the one who was going full on Crusader with it. Remember in Castlevania, the Bishop is very much portrayed as a corrupt dickhead who is not at all in line with the mainline church. I think he actually speaks negatively of the Pope at one point.

Plus White Rabbit's supplier is Vergil who is revealed to be an agent of Mundus, which calls into question exactly how much Mundus knows about the Rabbir's operations. As noted he benefits the most from the barrier being destroyed and in the end everyone including the VP played right into his hands.
That is the big part, but the Doing In the Wizard science fiction-alization, the focus on The Masquerade and change from the Euro-grunge aesthetic of the series being replaced with NYC. It definitely feels very American beyond the very obvious thing.

Don't you think it's quite convenient that Mundus seems to adopt the guy who was established as teleportation/portals master in all continuities and electronics savy guy in much maligned Dm C; then White Rabbit starts his shenanigans involving portals and electronics (apparently without outside help); and then that very portals specialist arrives as a backer, yet never reveals his human face (and he CAN take his human form, which is shown on-screen, and is not ashamed of it at all).

I’m just trying to figure out how Dante’s gonna get out of being cryogenically frozen next season!
So how accurate is the portrayal of demons in this show to the game?
You’re Gonna Carry That Weight. Not accurate at all.
The game had a dynamic of humans being weak but empathic vs the demons being monstrously strong but lacking empathy and humanity.
Which centers on the game's primary theme being that Dante's and by extention Sparda's ability to feel empathy and kindness is what makes them so powerful compared to the power hungry and greedy demons who are incapable of grasping such concepts.
The anime changes this heavily by framing the demons as a tragic oppressed race. Their being normal families of powerless harmless demons runs counter to those themes and makes noble demons like Sparda and Dante less special and unique.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Should I still be enjoying myself despite my blissful ignorance? Should I be upset that it’s inaccurate?
Unlike earlier Castlevania entries, Devil May Cry does rely on cutscenes.
I will say that its nuggets of commentary aren’t deep or expanded. When it is, it’s through filler.

You can still like it even if other people don't. That's not a problem.

Yeah but those are more individual cases. On a general level demons are a cruel and capricious bunch in the games.
Even in the original anime the weaker low level demons like Sid can be just as greedy and power hungry as a more powerful demon. The weaklings just have to be more clever in their quest for power.

They took a series that had nothing to do with America or politics and turned it into a weird Author Tract about how Bush-era American foreign policy sucks. Surely there are others stories about other countries that could be explored, ones more relevant to the source material.
I think the series is great when it's actually Devil May Cry, badass demon hunters fighting badass demons in an over-the-top manner. The moralizing is Narm at best and mildly offensive at worst, but there's a ton of fun action if you turn your brain off.
Does anyone actually read these?I’m probably gonna back off here because US politics are banned.

You’re Gonna Carry That Weight. Can anyone else corroborate this? I was looking for YMMV/audience reactions to the show or potential trivia for writing some trope examples in general:
As of now, I think it's obvious that a lot of DMC fans (myself included) expressed disappointment online at Netflix Lady/Mary's Adaptational Jerkass, or increased swearing and profanity compared to her classic counterpart... But apparently according to this YouTube reply
This got me curious (because I don't speak nor understand French)... but it may mean there are some changes in the script depending on the dub?
With Great Power, Comes Great MotivationHonestly the political setting I don't mind that much, I'm more bothered by the treatment of certain characters.
In this case using the demon realm as an allegory for the Iraq War to rag on Sparda.
Plus I feel like Lady is really butchered here and her character arc is a lot worse compared to the games.
Yeah I was side eyeing a lot of those posts cause they came out the day the show released. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to wait some time before adding ymmv reactions.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

For fun I like to imagine the Doomslayer, a guy who actually familiar with the real Fire and Brimstone Hell, showing up and Darkcom being flummoxed he's going after them along with the demon lords, after all they hear about him.
