I think you still can, if you can get the final Protoss research you can still churn out enough Banshees to take down every Photon Cannon you come across. I just have trouble seeing the Photon Cannons.
Continue writing our story of peace. For old games it’s absolutely unreasonable to complain about it. Old booklets and manuals were the way to learn about things way back when.
Now if it’s post 2007, that’s a different story.
EndWar's units have "shields" in addition to health. For the vehicles, and with the help of descriptions for their various upgrades, the shields can be rationalized as active defense systems, ECM suites, warning systems, and even simple evasive maneuvers.
But what about infantry units, which also have shields? What could that represent for them?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Maw of the Void is probably my least favorite mission in the game. The mission itself isn't too hard, but it's freaking slow, and there isn't much room for variable army comp, especially if you want to get all the Achievements. You're expected to build a fleet of Battle Cruisers, plus maybe a couple Science Vessels, and knock down each Rip Field Generator one-by-one. Even the Mothership took a couple engagements to kill because it's a Cowardly Boss that teleports away when it gets damaged.
The Battle Cruiser is our best anti-capital-ship unit with its Yamato Cannon, but it's really cost-inefficient against everything else compared to MMM + Tanks or Vikings + Banshee, and the slow build time means sometimes your Science Vessels come out later than you'd like. The Jackson's Revenge is a pretty good addition to your Merc airforce, though.

providing you actually kept the manual...I remember I spent more time playing the games then reading the manuals because of my short attention span

The only remote justification I can think of there without slapping on sci-fi Deflector Shields would be that infantrymen are pretty difficult to truly see individually at most ranges in battle, so their "shields" can represent the time it takes for the enemy to suss out their precise location.

I love that the Jackson's Revenge is a giga battleship that someone decided to build two battleship-sized gatling guns on. It's ridiculously over the top.
Absolutely. It doesn't have a particularly high number of available factions yet, but it's a very solid game nonetheless. At half price, you can't go wrong.
So it basically represents infantry being hard to hit due to both the smallness of each individual soldier and them actively trying to seek cover, minimize their profile, and pop smoke grenades to screen themselves in both the visible spectrum and infrared (yeah, somehow I forgot that this is an option for infantry). This makes sense, especially given the fact that shields regenerate over time once the unit stops getting attacked (for all units, not just); the enemy basically starts to "lose track" of the infantry as they take advantage of the breather to better reposition themselves and such.
I wonder if there's a better name to use for this in more mundane/modern settings that lack Deflector Shields, though. Or maybe just rationalize it as a gameplay term that is justified by the use of a literal shield symbol and the word's meaning being appropriate for the given function?

Sixteen, including the variant factions (if you don't, it's twelve). It was released with eight, so obviously it's looking bigger and bigger with time, but compared to the glut of factions in Ao E 2, it can seem a bit low still.

Gates of Hell is the first Char Mission, and now we're no longer in the New Weapon Target Range. I opted for spamming MMM because the base only has 1 Vespene Geyser, and already have enough tanks for defense.
The battle really the sells the feeling of desperately trying to salvage a Klendathu-level of screwup. Dominion troops are scattered and they'll be easily wiped out if you don't rescue them soon enough. Near the end of the missions, I had three groups trying to rescue multiple drop sites at the same time. One was the main MMM army. Second was the Mercenary flight team. Third was a Lone Specter armed with a nuke. Once the final Dmoninion squad was rescued, I reached the supply cap and sent the entire army towards Warfield.

FYI, rifle infantry specifically have an active camo upgrade that makes them not show up on the enemy player's UI unless they:
- Get too close
- Start shooting
- In sight range of enemy infantry with stealth detection upgrade
- Get hit by an EMP
You can still visually see them yourself just fine, you just can't designate them as an attack target for your units because they don't get a UI identification icon.
Re:Havens Fall
That mission never felt right for me. One it's more fun than Safe Haven, and 2 you're still trying to save colonists from the Zerg. Why is this mission treating it like you're murdering colonists?
And where is the Protoss? For that matter, where is the Zerg in Safe Haven? These 2 were really disjointed.
RE: Supernova
The cheese strat still works. Not so on Brutal where they park an additional Observer over the final objective, but hey.
And you can drop a MULE on top of the relics for a quick grab. Just skirt a banshee into sight range and yolo.
RE:Gates of Hell
If you are in trouble you can drop a MULE next to a squad. They'll likely get eaten immediately but hey you get the achievement for "saving" them.
#IceBearForPresident@Haven. Didn't Raynor tell the Selendis to stand down and let him do the deed because "it's a Terran business." I imagine they just stand in a distance and watching in case Raynor fails.
@Supernova. Oh yeah, the Comsat + MULE drop. Then it is reasonable to 100% that mission without losing a building.

Wait, how does that even work? Active camo is supposed to make the subject practically invisible by way of blending into the surrounding environment, so the enemy shouldn't be able to notice that the infantry in question are, well, infantry.
Finished both Belly of the Beast and Shatter the Sky. Not much to say about Belly of the Beast. It's a linear Hero mission, except that the giant Queen can kill a Marine in one hit.
Shatter the Sky is my preferred mission. Like Gates of Hell, it's a good idea to have both an air force and a ground force because one Zerg base has heavy air defense while the other has heavy ground defense. Furthermore, there is also a 25 minute achievement, so I ended up attacking the last 2 bases at the same time.
I think it wins by the sheer virtue of not requiring godly micro just to move your army from point A to point B

@Alexa: For Supernova, is it still viable on brutal to run banshees along the north edge of the final base? I remember that being an easy win condition when I last revisited the campaign, but that was not on brutal.
