There was a bit of growing criticism about the demons portrayal in how an entire race/species is portrayed as inherently evil with no outliers whatsoever and the unfortunate implications thereof. It quelled a bit with theorise of them being philosophical zombies and/or possibly been created by elves eons ago and the knowledge of that being lost.

For various, kind of spoilery reasons I don't really agree with that criticism. I'd argue that the portrayal of Demons in Frieren is on the whole way better than things like the portrayal of goblins in Goblin Slayer just to give an example of a different series off the top of my head, which in my opinion that criticism feels way more valid for.

I don't disagree which is why I included the part about p-zombies and the theory. I 100% agree about the other anime you mentioned that Inwont refer to because side-track imminent then.

[up]I just looked up the term philosophical zombie and... Wow. Thats a fascinating term. I would love to make a character based on that. Like a robot who acts completely human-like but doesn't really perceive the meaning behind such actions.

Frieren coming out when it does is horrible, the best time for me to watch things is the middle of the week. xD

A pretty interesting premiere, but I ended up drowsy in the 3rd episode, so I guess I'm gonna have to rewatch that again... One bit tho that I picked up on: Jinshi, dude, not everyone's gonna fall for your looks...

And with that, my list for the cour is complete ... excluding the Neflix anime, but as if my busy schedule will accomodate that...

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto had a perfect start. They even added a few scenes which made some parts of the LN vol. 1 better in the anime form (visuals, music and voice-acting also a big plus). I am a bit concerned that they only covered 11 chapters in 3 eps (vol. 1 has 31 chapter+short epilogue) but I have faith they'll manage to show us the whole Arc 1 of the story (4 volumes) in these 2 cours.

The ending parts of the ep. 3 even made me emotional. This part was good in the books but they made it so much better.

So the english dub of season 2 of Girlfriend, Girlfriend started yesterday. From a story standpoint, I really don't care about this show - The guy seems like a douche - But fucking hell if the voice work in season 1 wasn't some my favorite over the top comedy I've heard in awhile.

This is to say, most of my experience with season 1 was just through clips, and I hope season 2 provides some great ones as well.

The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao sure takes being kidnapped like a champ. I like the contrast between her level-headed self and the moments where she gets super excited. Does the emperor not have multiple physicians for his courtesans? Seems like the kind of thing you'd want more of. Very good start to an adaptation I've heard a lot of hype for. This may be a lesser explored side of courtroom politics, but certainly no less compelling.

[up] A small spoiler: former Emperor impregnated one of the consort hand maindens but did not want to legitimize the daughter so he put the blame on the head physician to cover up. Since when only eunuchs are allowed to work in the inner palace medical staff. And, as you can guess, not that many skilled candidats. Mao Maos "father" (he is actually her great uncle) was one but he was exiled due to some incident that will be explained a bit later in the series and they could not find a good replacement since. There is also an unofficial female medical staff there who manage impromptu hospital and they made sure no more male doctors are hired to get their job.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Strong animation, good source material... the direction isn't quite up to the task. Like, it's not bad, but there's a general sense that it could be hitting harder

For the other stuff I've been following...

WataOshi continues to be surprisingly well put-together for something with no budget

Kami Erabi I dropped just for being really ugly

Shanfro hit the point where it actually gets kinda interesting, and is still fairly well made

Shy's starting to drag a bit. Not enough for me to drop it, though

Undead Unluck continues to be fantastic

Hikikomari actually really improved in the second episode and is now solidly good

using abbreviated japanese forms of the names makes it kind of hard to tell what you're talking about xD

WataOshi continues to be surprisingly well put-together for something with no budget

I mean... I guess I didn't think it has much of a budget, but it's not like it's amazingly action-packed as a story, it can afford to make a lot of long shots. As a very dense LN, it's not really something that's set up to be carried by visuals.

Although part of that might also be the multiple adaptations and rewrites. Filtration!

Hylarn (Don’t ask)
#190: Oct 21st 2023 at 5:59:27 PM

It doesn't need a huge budget, but the one it has is low enough that it's affecting how well the visuals can add to the story. ...My point was more that low-budget anime rarely see the kind of talent or passion that leads to a good end product, though

One thing I’ve noticed about the Tearmoon anime is that the soundtrack is really good. It does a lot of heavy lifting even in the scenes where the direction is relatively flat.

The direction is still pretty flat though. The Kaguya-esque sarcastic narration is important to keep but it doesn’t translate all that well in the anime for some reason. I don’t know, it sounds a little more… dramatic in my head when I read the novels?

A question for anyone that has seen anime seires in Hulu (with some context first): Undead Unluck has been airing there and I been loving it so far, so much I want to watch it again dubbed. Does anyone know how long has it taken before for other series to get dubs in that platform? (Summertime Rendering might be an example)

Firefighter Daigo: Looks like the female main character's arc is frustration as her smaller body and frame cause her to be passed over while the guy who she thinks only signed up to impress her moves ahead. And on the first actual rescue mission there's a situation where she would have been a good choice.

[up][up][up] I think the narration is fine, if not particularly notable. Definitely agree on the soundtrack though, it has a great sense of comedic timing.

[up] Great point! No shoulders would have needed to be dislocated.

Anyway, first impressions for Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: There's been a lot of hype for this one, and with just the first episode I can already see why. Maomao is a main character that demands your attention, starting with her matter-of-fact response to her kidnapping, to her intelligent deduction of the royal babies' condition, to her lovable quips about everything she finds dumb about the rear palace. I'm already raring to watch the next two episodes.

My Reactions So Far (Please Be Kind Because I Am The Suck At This)

While not as stacked as last year's fall, this year is still hitting hard with its releases.

  • Frieren: A Journey's End was probably the most hyped anime of the season, and it definitely definitely delivers. Watching even the first episode was a trip - the voice acting, the camera angles (the director is the same one from Bocchi the Rock!, which is my absolute favourite manga/anime ever. Yes, I know. Yes, I'm sorry), the animation, the storytelling. All of it is absolutely spectacular. What's more is that the somewhat new take on your typical non-isekai fantasy drama, with our main grandm-uhh, character Frieren going on a journey of self-discovery decades after the big main adventure you'd normally see. Personally, I love the characters a lot - Frieren is such a lovable aloof...grandma elf, and Fern is super entertaining and dynamic too. I've still yet to get used to Stark, since he's only appeared for an episode or two, but he's great as well, and I think I'll enjoy his character a lot. Plus, the opening is by YOASOBI, which, while not really fitting the show's vibe, is still a vibe in itself. All in all, a Definitely Continuing.
  • SPY x FAMILY is back with Season 2, and it's already looking as though it's going to be better than the admittedly bland second cour of Season 1. Not the best this season, but still following. Continuing.
  • The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 is already looking so so so much better than the complete dumpster that was Season 2. The new slavery and village/worldbuilding plotlines are really hooking me. Continuing.
  • The Eminence in Shadow: Season 2 is still the stupid dumb anime that I loved so much last year. The moon is red, and we are indeed out of time.Continuing.
  • Dr Stone is back. Enough said. Continuing.
  • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You (Yes, I counted the Reallys. That is correct) is another anime that is new this season, and this one is as absolutely amazing. The comedy is some of the funniest this year alone - I don't think I've laughed as hard since probably Kaguya-sama. That recent episode with Shizuka's backstory...aaaaah. I want the other two girls out. Screw them. This one's the clear winner.. For someone that isn't into polyamory, I'm enjoying this a lot more than I thought. Also, the OP is super super super catchy. Continuing.
  • And finally, Stardust Telepath, which is this year's Socially Anxious Main Character From A Kirara Manga Gets An Anime Adaptation. The last one, which is also published by Manga Time Kirara, has been my personal hyperfixation for the last year, and this one is another excellent anime to add to the Cute Girls Being Cute For No Reason Other Than To Generate Money collection, which some say is growing too large. Even if main character Umika seems like a version of Bocchi without guitar, or Komi without looks, or (insert socially anxious character) without (insert defining trait of said character), what she does have is a cute alien gi-uhh, best friend, as well as two other friends, of which we've met one already. For Now. And space. I think I'll really like this one. Continuing.

I'm probably going to try Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, and give an update in like, I dunno, a month's time. If I'm lucky.

Clear prop!

Hoshikuzu Telepath: Three chapters adapted this time, though they removed the end credits to make it happen. Has there ever been a time where an anime started removing the end credits as early as episode 3? Though I think it's a good sign that Studio Gokumi was willing to put in the work to animate an additional 1:30 of footage this early in the run.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but the way the sweeping lighthouse beam causes the girls to fluctuate between light and shadow is really evocative of HoshiTele's tone.

During the first confrontation with Matataki, Kaori actually removed a bit of the yonkoma stuff, making it play out more realistically/dramatically than in the manga. Interesting choice, to downplay the yonkoma format so early.

Threadless Talk (for the series that have gotten 3 or so episodes, anyway)

     # 1 to # 10
  • 16-bit Sensation: Another Layer: It's a different kind of story from the manga, but I still like it. The nuggets of trivia about bishojo game development are there in some capacity, and our MC's time leaps provide a more solid plotline to follow. I guess that was the point of her inclusion, and it's working fine so far. Continuing.
  • A Returner's Magic Should Be Special: Despite the title, this show hasn't been anything special so far. But it's competent enough at the formula it's following, and it knows how to have fun with it. Romantica in particular is a funny girl, especially with Desir teasing her. The MC focusing on headhunting people who can become powerful combatants in the hopes of shifting the odds of the final battle in their favor is interesting, too. Continuing.
  • Arknights: Perish In Frost: The somber mood infused in the superb cinematography keeps the drama palpable and things vaguely intriguing. I say "vaguely" because frankly, Reunion is still amusingly ineffectual as villains. Even the hyped up Yeti Squad headed by the dread Frost Nova fails to take down a squad of five, three of whom were significantly injured. And the less we see of Mephisto, the better. The fight scenes seem to be more competently directed this time around, at least. Continuing.
  • Bikkuri-men: Collectible stickers are Serious Business. It's like Yu-Gi-Oh or Beyblade where the world revolves around a children's pasttime, but a bit more self-aware. I like the cheeky jabs at people taking this Bikkuri-men business way too seriously. Granted, the stickers can also give people powers, but most people just want to collect and trade and stuff. Continuing.
  • Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta: Found this as merely serviceable fantasy fare and was about to dip until the last bit of the third episode, where the father and daughter finally reunite, which is the shift in focus I was waiting for. Ange has a severe case of "daddy's girl." Kinda weird, kinda funny. Giving it 2-3 more episodes.
  • Captain Tsubasa S2: Still annoyed at all the shilling for Tsubasa, but I know that's just how things work around these parts. As long as the anime delivers on the over-the-top football action, I'll make do. Say it with me: football is a COMBAT sport. If you're not drawing blood you've clearly not trained enough. Continuing.
  • Dark Gathering: It went from a typical un-scary horror anime to a twisted version of Pokemon where they catch ghosts by effectively torturing them into submission. As someone who's been disproportionately irked by all sort B-movie ghosts and ghouls, this is extremely cathartic for me. Kei and Eiko are also properly onboard now, and adding their skillsets to Yayoi's ghostbusting expertise. Round them all up, I say! Try haunting someone with your illogical rules now. Continuing.
  • Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou: It's rare for the humor in an anime to completely miss me, but I think I have to concede that I do not find this show funny at all. Even Phoenix's blank-faced delivery of his dry jokes don't work for me, which is odd because Helck has similar humor and I like it there. Odd. The familial-love fluff is alright, but it's a weaker offering compared to a few other shows this season. Dropped.
  • The Eminence in Shadow S2: In a surprising twist of fate, this time there was more comedy in the anime compared to the manga, which is a decision I wholeheartedly support. KageJitsu is at its best when Cid is just going along with the flow and BS-ing his way to success. My favorite gag has to be him becoming a broken record and repeating the same few lines throughout one of the episode, purely because he thought they were cool. Truly an intriguing mystery, that Shadow. Definitely continuing.
  • The Faraway Paladin: The Lord of the Rust Mountains: Moving things a little too quick, but nothing glaring. I know we're in the early phase, but overall I think the production has gotten a slight boost? Which hopefully means the studio is as excited for this arc as I am. Anyway, we're still warming up with William meeting and squiring Al, who'll be an important figure in an upcoming event. We're in for an enthralling piece of high fantasy and here's hoping the anime sticks the landing. Definitely continuing.

     # 11 to # 20
  • Firefighter Daigo: Having participated in firefighting training in real life, I was delighted to see the protagonists slog through the same training exercises. And with literal and figurative fire having forged their friendship, it's time for the main trio to fully embark on their chosen career path. Excited to witness some truly harrowing rescue ops. We're off to a great start with Daigo dislocating his own shoulder so he can squeeze under some rubble. Continuing.
  • Hametsu no Oukoku: You can drop a lemon on this bad boy and see it get cut in half. Two characters that I thought would stick around for a while ended up dying bloody deaths in the latest episode, just to emphasize what kind of show this is. I think the edge is entertaining though, maybe because I dig the MC's specific brand of magic, and his usage is as extra as the villainy hounding him. Continuing.
  • Heat the Pig Liver: The novelty of porcine transformation quickly faded and replaced by oodles and oodles of intricate prose about simping over the cute, subservient maid. Yeahhh. This is like the most "written for otaku" anime I've seen this whole season, and I am not a fan. I waited to see if the worldbuilding was headed anywhere interesting, particularly the status of the Yethma, but I was just left with a feeling that it's an elaborate excuse to have a cute girl willing to strip for a pig. Ugh. I'm out.
  • Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle - Rhyme Anima: I always become a superfan of shows that go all in their their dumb premise, and Hypnosis Mic knows exactly the kind of musical mayhem its potential audience would demand. We have characters from all walks of life, from being actual singers to soldiers to even monks, using their magical microphones to crack down on rap-criminals. RAP. CRIMINALS. And the icing on the cake is that the raps themselves are fire. They have a legit thumping beat, and even better the characters theme it after themselves. So expect the monk to drop some bars about taking his opponents to heaven, or the lawyer to lay down the hurt on those who break the rules. It's a blast! Definitely continuing.
  • The iDOLM@STER Million Live!: The CG is distracting at times but it looks good for the most part. The real challenge is keeping track of 37 freaking idols. That's... gonna take me a while. Most of the girls are pretty much one personality trait apiece, which is to be expected when you have to cram them all in to 20-minute episodes. Guess we just have to see how well they develop from here. Continuing.
  • I'm In Love With The Villainess: Oh wow, Rae explicitly declared "I am gay". Awesome that they're not being wishy-washy about that. It would be annoying to have a Rae Taylor pester you in real life, but it's hella entertaining to be an outsider watching Claire's composure buckle under Rae's enthusiasm. I'm quite curious if they'll go ahead and get together. Until then, let the teasing continue. Continuing.
  • Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri: Sucked more than I expected. Aside from the first one, the cases have been somewhat dumb, and the only reason they've run cold is because the Police Are Useless. Watch if you like seeing a black-haired bishonen drag his hapless partner around, I guess? As for me, dropped.
  • KamiErabi: I'm sorry but this just... sucks. The lead guy can basically warp reality and the only drawback is some vague bad karma that doesn't even seem to matter in his latest use. The dialogue and writing are mediocre, the powers are poorly depicted, heck the show doesn't even have the decency to look nice or be campy. I think the story would have done well to dial back the "style" (if it could be called that) and went back to basics in designing a death game plot. Okay, just to be fair, Akitsu deciding to "betray" the MC because of the futures he saw was interesting, but it wasn't enough to sway my opinion. Dropping fast and hard.
  • Kawagoe Boys Sing: Had to get over how the plot kicks basically on a random whim by several characters. It still doesn't make sense to me why the first three boys agreed to joining the choir. But now that the choir has formed, we're getting full episodes dedicated to introducing the new members, and their reasons for joining have been more fleshed out. Meanwhile our initial trio have also shown more of their interactions, so all in all I like them more. Meanwhile, I feel sorry for Rika-sensei for having to put up with her two pushy and eccentric colleagues. I'm not sure how they're supposed to win a national competition when their coach seems to keep fumbling the ball and barely helping them practice, but I guess he's at least started to put in some effort. Giving it 2-3 more episodes.
  • Kimizero: Still seems like a typical romcom, and it's a bit of drag watching it go through a few of the usual motions. There's even a transfer student that comes in to turn the situation into a love triangle. Whoop-dee-do. Though I guess it's nice that the main couple dodge the misunderstandings by having the sense to talk things out. And they're sorta slowly getting that elusive chemistry with each other? So it might still have a shot at piercing me in the feels. Giving it 2-3 more episodes.

     # 21 to # 30
  • Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu: Okay, sure, I get the idea that Charlotte is such a pure and abused girl that merely picking between tea and coffee is "naughty" for her. It's still boring! Allen practically turning himself hostage to force Charlotte to live a little is somewhat amusing, but in general this has even less substance than the usual fluff. And in a packed season like this, it's sometimes hard to notice it's even there. Dropped.
  • Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Finished all the available episodes. I've mentioned it a few posts back, but Maomao is a freaking great MC that doesn't take shit from the typical inner palace politics. So you get all the good stuff about period dramas i.e. political intrigue, but with less bullying from the snobbish elite. I also like the variety of "cases" Maomao has weighed in on so far. This anime was late to the party, but it is another gem in an already star-studded season. Definitely continuing.
  • Migi and Dali: Loving the combination of dry comedy and psychological thriller. Like, you know Migi and Dali would be able to pull off more heinous crimes, if they weren't children with a limited understanding of how the world works. So right now, most of their dastardly deeds amount to elaborate pranks with copious amounts of contortions and contraptions. And they make me laugh whether they succeed or not. Okay, maybe the latest skit about Dali impersonating a girl and getting his twin to fall in love with him so he can psychologically manipulate him into studying harder might have gone a little too far... Definitely continuing.
  • MF Ghost: You know you're watching Initial D (okay fine it's technicaly the sequel) when our hotshot hero is shredding his tires to get serious speed with his drifting. All to the beep-bop of Eurobeat. You bet I'm continuing.
  • My New Boss Is Goofy: The show has settled into a routine and doesn't seem interested in shaking things up. Which is fine if you want to watch an adult man act like an adorable ditz. Me, personally, I think I've had my fill and I'm fine clocking out. Dropped.
  • Paradox Live: Still in the process of introducing the four main groups duking it out in the rap free-for-all. I do like seeing what's driving them to use a substance that literally inflicts them with a psychological breakdown. Their backstories aren't particularly original but they do a solid job of getting you a little invested in seeing them win. It's therefore a crying shame that their bars are not up to par. They need to up the tempo and prove that there's more to their performance than funky hallucinatory phantoms. Continuing.
  • Potion-danomi de Ikinobimasu!: Isekai tend to have their protagonist cruise on easy mode, but even considering that, there is a distinct lack of friction in this story, and thus it's hard to latch on to anything. You gotta be really jonesing for an escapist fantasy to like this. Dropped.
  • Protocol: Rain: The interactions of the main group are already a ton of fun, and I already have a soft spot for these goofballs and their friendly bantering. The sore spot is that the CG department of this e-sports anime is woefully underequipped to deliver the fast-paced action you'd expect from pro-level FPS gameplay. No such thing as a 180-no-scope here. But again, the characters are fun. I'll be rooting for them in the tournament, while trying to see as little of the actual matches as possible. Continuing.
  • Ragna Crimson: The action has been decent. Visually, already rougher though, which is more of a sore point for a work that's supposedly known for spectacle. This Crimson chap also rubs me the wrong way; I don't find him entertaining at all, even if he brought rifles to this setting. That said, I liked how he led a group of second-rate hunters into successfully slaying a superior dragon. I'm still thinking about switching to the manga, but I'm in no hurry. Giving it 2-3 more episodes.
  • SHY: Shino Shimoji's stellar voicework makes you want to hug the titular SHY tight. I personally don't find the character study particularly compelling, but I still do like the attention given to Teru battling with her insecurities. Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World is a prevalent anime trope, but this anime shows what piling all that responsibility onto a teenager will do to her. That's always worth exploring. I'm rooting for this lass. Continuing.

     # 31 to 34
  • Stardust Telepath: Gonna be honest that I'm sticking with this mostly because of comments in this thread giving enticing hints of what's to come. That said, speaking purely about it as a CGDCT anime, these girls are rather cute. Luscious animation means the characters speak with their body as much as with their words, and their personalities are quite colorful. They've also introduced a prickly mechanic, and I gotta see more of her. Continuing.
  • Tearmoon Empire: I really, really like that Mia hasn't completely reformed after looping back. She's still a selfish princess, only that she decided to choose the "Good" options this time in order to avoid her fated execution. And of course people aren't privy to her inner thoughts and just think she's a saint. The soundtrack picks the best times to become goofy, and the visual gags are on freaking point (Guillotine-kun is a good boy). Hilarious all around and quite possibly the best villainess anime I've seen yet. If it counts as one. Definitely continuing.
  • The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess: So after failing to amuse me, the show pivots to a more serious plot about a rebel organization planning to bring back true death to the world. And it... is still not grabbing my attention. Probably because the face of that organization is a generic psychopath, or probably because the immortality thing has so far been an excuse for people to wage war for fun. Dropped.
  • Yuzuki Family's Four Sons: The poignant tone works for what the story is going for. It's honestly not bad, and the four brothers are likable in their own ways. I've just never been keen on shows about family drama; I admit to liking my slice-of-life with a degree more levity. Giving it 2-3 more episodes.

This also just happens to be a very strong season. I can usually cut my watchlist down to under 30 around 3-4 episodes in, but not this fall.
