I still can't believe Annapurna was able to revive it in the first place.
Did we ever learn how it happened? (And how wild was it that Netflix's reveal tweet
was on my birthday last year?)
It sounds like the Blue Sky people realized something was up and uploaded as much of the movie assets into the cloud (like, stuff Disney wouldn’t just automatically preserve, because Disney saves most things, even from cancelled projects, but not stuff like some of the code) and then Annapurna waited a bit and then came around asking if they could buy the rights. Disney wouldn’t have much of a reason to say no because from their perspective, they didn’t pay for the movie, Fox did, pre-purchase, so Annapurna buying it would be effectively free money.
(Disney saving everything that never gets released is the same reason that Warner Bros is saving everything from those things they canned and wrote off for taxes. If they delete anything, that means they lose any ability to sue if someone tries to make a nearly identical thing somewhere else without permission. They need proof of the project existing and the state its in and the specific elements that are being copied and if they don’t save everything, they risk a specific aspect they deleted getting copied.)
I got the page for the work up right here with some help from Troperaiser. Feel free to contribute!
Also, an entry on Demand Overload says that the teaser’s release managed to crash Twitter. Did anyone notice that? Because I honestly didn’t.

You’re Gonna Carry That Weight. It was pretty clear that Disney was not going to keep a third feature animation studio, it was just a question if they would let them finish the works in progress. They didn't, but at least they sold off the partially finished Nimona which was probably the best we could expect.
I am really thrilled to see this.

Honestly? I would have sold it and the rights to its films. Shutting it down was such a waste.
Also, I’ve set up a WMG page for the movie if anyone wants to post theories.

You’re Gonna Carry That Weight.Man, I almost want to see the biopic of that, because wow.
Anyway! PSA: you know how Netflix animated movies have limited theatrical runs? Nimona has one too, starting on June 23, 2023!
Pay close attention to your theaters to see if any of them show Netflix movies!
Being honest, the first trailer didn't really get my interest, as I thought that the Fractured Fairy Tale opening parodying stories of princesses, dragons and knights to show how the film is different from the "usual fantasy story" felt rather oversaturated and tired (I mean, Shrek 1 already parodied that 20 years ago, playing a fairy tale straight is more of a novelty than satirizing them nowadays), but the relationship between Nimona and Ballister in the second trailer was plenty of fun. Ballister being completely oblivious to her age got me

oh hey how are you doing?Fractured Fairy Tale has been done a lot, but I think Nimona takes it further than Shrek in that she’s not merely an anti-hero, she’s a full on Villain Protagonist.
Shamelessly thinking crude graphic drawings count as a "job application"? I think she and Deadpool would make great friends.
Also, new poster!
With a new trailer coming tomorrow!
And finally, I can't find it, but ND Stevenson already calls it one of his favorite animated movies ever, so I think we're in really good hands.

Based on the OGN by ND Stevenson (which began as a webcomic by him), originally produced by Blue Sky Studios until Disney canned it because they thought "Ewwww two men are kissing each other! Think of the children! Wahhh!"
But Annapurna and Netflix were able to bring it back from the dead on April 11, 2022
and it's finally coming June 30, 2023!
