Note: This thread was proposed by The Mayor of Simpleton.

The problem: Exposed Eyeballs as Eyes is a trope about when a character has exposed eyeballs for eyes. Originally I brought it here because I was concerned about tropeworthiness, until the participants of the TRS meta thread informed me that this was tropeworthy. The participants of the TRS meta thread also informed me that this trope was not doing well in wick count (with just 19 wicks if indexes and sandboxes are removed), was apparently rushed out the door with less than 10 examples when it was in the TLP, and that the name was clunky and kind of forced. While there are more wicks than usual for a trope that isn't doing well, I decided I'll still take this in for similar reasons as John Barleycorn and Friends (which had a poor name that contributed to a low wick count).

I had earlier decided to do a wick check to see if there was any tropeworthy usage. It isn't really needed now since this is technically Not Thriving or close to that territory, but I kept it here anyway in case anyone wants to look.

Wick check: Link here, but here was the quick results:

  • 4/25 wicks had something resembling tropeworthy context for why a character had exposed eyeball eyes, or 16%,
  • 15/25 wicks were just "character has exposed eyeball eyes", or 60%,
  • 2/25 wicks were zero-context, or 8%, and
  • 4/25 wicks were unclassifiable, or 16%

Possible solution: As suggested in the TRS meta thread, a rename to Exposed Eyeballs may help the trope, and TBH I think it may need a re-run through the TLP or even a yarding if there aren't enough examples to salvage this.

What does everyone else think? Any other ideas or suggestions?

Wick check:

Here a wick check will be performed for Exposed Eyeballs as Eyes.

Why?: The description and most examples don't appear to describe anything tropeworthy beyond "character has exposed eyeballs as eyes".

Wicks checked: 25/25

Wick totals:

  • 4/25 wicks had something resembling tropeworthy context for why a character had exposed eyeball eyes, or 16%,
  • 15/25 wicks were just "character has exposed eyeball eyes", or 60%,
  • 2/25 wicks were zero-context, or 8%, and
  • 4/25 wicks were unclassifiable, or 16%

Character has exposed eyeballs for eyes, tropeworthy context (4/25)
  1. Cartoon Creature: Zniw Adventure: Most of the characters are specific, real-life dinosaur species, but Zniw is a made-up, unnamed species of ornithopod. She has Exposed Eyeballs as Eyes and a yellow-and-brown striped body. Bit of a stretch, but I'll interpret the context as "has exposed eyeball eyes to illustrate they are a fictional species."
  2. Franchise.Toy Story: Mr. Potato Head and his wife, being toys with detachable parts, sometimes have to hold their eyes in their hands in order to see better. Exposed eyeball eyes help the toys see better.
  3. VideoGame.Darkest Dungeon: One of the bosses is a Doomsayer who kept showing up at the estate's hamlet to turn the population against your ancestor, because the latter was about to unearth something unspeakable. Said ancestor gave him one Rasputinian Death after another, but the doomsayer kept returning to rile up the population. The ancestor finally showed him that he wasn't about to unearth the unspeakable thing, but already had unearthed the portal to summon it. The doomsayer Went Mad From The Revelation, tore out his own eyes in madness, and became the prophet of the cult worshiping the thing. When you get to fight him, he still holds his disembodied eyes in his hand: they are still alive, and he supposedly sees through them. (And, inversely, peering into them stresses out your dungeoneering party for obvious reasons.) Tropeworthy context.
  4. WesternAnimation.Wish Kid: There's an episode with a ghost who can become invisible except for his eyes, which can then be knocked out of place. Exposed eyeball eyes can be a liability for character—IMO tropeworthy context.

Character just happens to have exposed eyeballs for eyes (15/25)
  1. Animation.Pleasant Goat And Big Big Wolf: One of the designs used for frogs that appear across the Green Green Grassland gives them big eyeballs that are not contained within eye sockets. Characters just happen to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  2. Animation.Simple Samosa: Vada has eyeballs that aren't connected to him in any way. Character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  3. Characters.Dont Starve Monsters And Hostile Mobs: At first glance, their single eyeball looks to be an Eye on a Stalk instead... until you look closer, and see that there isn't actually any stalk involved: rather, the eyeball's a perfectly smooth orb not actually attached to anything, but rather just balanced on a pair of thin twigs sprouting from the tree's canopy. Character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  4. Characters.Simple Samosa: His eyeballs are not connected to his body in any way. Character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  5. Characters. The Distortion Detective: The way Moses describes his Distortion, his entire head and face are totally invisible save for his eyes, which from her view mostly seem to hang suspended in the air at his expected eye level. Nothing tropeworthy beyond the character just happening to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  6. Literature.Discworld: Blind Io is the chief of gods. The most notable characteristic of his is that he has a piece of cloth covering where his eyes should be, and he instead uses lots of floating eyeballs in order to see. Since all eyes are used to see, the context isn't tropeworthy enough IMO.
  7. Series.Fraggle Rock: The eyes of Red, Wembley and Gobo are just eyeballs placed on top of their heads. Characters just happen to have eyeball eyes.
  8. Series. The Big Garage: In the segments featuring the various animated tools, the hammer and oil can have exposed eyeballs. Characters just happen to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  9. Series. The Muppet Show: The eyes of Beaker are just eyeballs placed on top of his head. Character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  10. SesameStreet.Tropes D To F: The eyes of Cookie Monster and Elmo are just eyeballs placed on top of their heads. Characters just happen to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  11. Toys.Tamagotchi:
    • Donutchi is a donut with exposed eyeballs near the top of his head.
    • Hatenatchi is a question mark with these.
    • Okutchi is block with a large, open mouth and eyes on top. All three are just characters who happen to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  12. VideoGame.Croc: Croc and many other creatures have their eyes be just ellipses placed on top of their heads. Characters just happen to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  13. VideoGame.Kao The Kangaroo: Kao's eyes are just eyeballs placed on top of his head. Notably, he's the only character in the series whose eyes are like this. Character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes—and being the only character in the game with them isn't "notable" in and of itself unless there's a reason for it.
  14. VideoGame.Zniw Adventure: Zniw has two large eyes on top of her head. Her eyes are white when seen from the back, but when seen from the front, she does have eyelids that appear when she makes certain expressions. As written, character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes.
  15. WesternAnimation.Aaahh Real Monsters: Krumm is a monster who has to hold his eyeballs in his hands in order to see. As written, character just happens to have exposed eyeball eyes.

    ZCEs (2/25)
  1. Series.Big And Small: Small has these. ZCE.
  2. WesternAnimation. The Frog Show: The frog has them. ZCE.

Maybe merge it with Cartoony Eyes? Exposed Eyeballs makes me think of when eyes pop out of the sockets for creepy factor.

I think I understand the definition of the trope — eyes that are visually/stylistically orbs with a pupil, that appear to be popped atop the body of the owner — but the "floating eyes" examples that have been there since draft stage are throwing me off. I would consider those misuse.

Merge with Cartoony Eyes. If it comes down to renaming, Exposed Ball Eyes maybe.

The 15/25 folder contains sufficient context per trope description. The first folder is more like creative uses and lampshade hanging. So I see enough correct uses. I don't think it's worth its own trope still.

Hooked a crowner since we have a decent amount of support for merging, but not enough for consensus.

Trope Repair Shop: Exposed Eyeballs As Eyes

Crown Description:

Exposed Eyeballs As Eyes is frequently misused, and if misuse were removed, the trope would not be thriving, so merging with Cartoony Eyes was suggested. What should be done with Exposed Eyeballs As Eyes?
