Duplicate Trope: They Do

    Original post
Side note: sorry for taking so long to launch the thread, I've been outside almost all day.
I and a few other tropers had concerns that They Do (created in 2008) might be a duplicate of Relationship Upgrade (created in 2006). Both tropes are basically defined as "the moment two characters become an Official Couple." So I made a wick check to see if examples of They Do can perfectly fit Relationship Upgrade, and surprise, surprise, they do (pun intended)! But that's not all. As I worked on the wick check, I discovered another issue. They Do attracts lots of ZCEs due to its Stock Phrase-like name, which is usually used as an answer for Will They or Won't They? (which attracts ZCEs in itself, as well).

Here's what the quick results say:

  • 32 out of 50 wicks are examples that are perfectly redundant with Relationship Upgrade, or 64%.
  • 1 out of 50 wicks are misuse, or 2%.
  • 17 out of 50 wicks are ZCEs, unclear, or potholed examples without much context, or 34%.

Wick check:

Some concerns were raised regarding They Do and Relationship Upgrade being redundant with each other. Both tropes are basically defined as "two characters becoming an Official Couple." This wick check will see if They Do is a duplicate of Relationship Upgrade in which examples of They Do can be perfect, valid examples of Relationship Upgrade.

Wicks checked: 50/50.

  • Quick results:
    • 32/50 are examples that are perfectly redundant with Relationship Upgrade, or 64%.
    • 1/50 wicks are misuse, or 2%.
    • 17/50 wicks are ZCEs, unclear, or potholed examples without much context, or 34%.

    Redundant with Relationship Upgrade (32/50)
  1. Confession Triggers Consummation: (Description) It's not unusual for the immediate sex to be used as the couple's moment of Relationship Upgrade or the confirmation that They Do, as they will afterwards be treated as an Official Couple. Remove the They Do part and the sentence won't be affected
  2. Extra Parent Conception: Given a very dark twist in Berserk. After the rather complicated relations between Griffith, Guts and Casca end with the latter two getting together and unknowingly conceiving a child by completely regular means, a long string of unfortunate events results in Griffith, who had been a bit of a ruthless, possessive psychopath to begin with, being reincarnated as a powerful demon and brutally raping Casca just to spite Guts. Griffith's "contribution" ends up corrupting what would have otherwise been a normal baby into a mutated fetus monster of considerable demonic power.
  3. Foot Popping: X-Men: When Scott and Jean get married, we see Jean's foot popping as they kiss (which is shown on the cover, but merely implied in the comic, as we instead see a closeup of their kiss).
  4. Everyone Can See It: In Safe Havens, Samantha and Dave used to tell anyone and everyone that they were Just Friends. Absolutely no one bought it, especially their circle of friends. They eventually progressed to dating and Official Couple-dom but balked at attempts to go beyond "just dating", physically or legally. They did eventually get married in 2014 and had a daughter in 2018. Maria, one of the most ardent shippers on deck for them, turns out to be their Kid from the Future.
  5. Inconvenient Attraction: Bridgerton: Season 2's romantic leads, Anthony and Kate, are famously this. Neither of them are pleased upon realized to share a mutual attraction, since Anthony insistently attempts to court and marry Kate's sister, Edwina, as he is dead-set against marrying for lovenote , while Kate's reason is because she initially disliked Anthonynote  and she herself never dreams to get married. They spend most of the season trying their best to deny or fight their feelings before eventually end up married.
  6. Anime.Captain Earth: Under Ship Tease, And the episode after, Daichi and Hana get the same treatment. They eventually make it official.
  7. Anime.Hanasaku Iroha: Under All Love Is Unrequited, Finally subverted between Ko and Ohana by the last episode: she confesses her feelings to him, and they seem to have gotten together.
  8. Anime.Tamako Market: At the very end of the movie Tamako finally reciprocates Mochizou's feelings by confessing to him at the train station using their Tin-Can Telephone. It is heavily implied, if not confirmed that they finally end up together. Some Official Artwork even supports this.
  9. BelligerentSexualTension.Fan Works: In A Brief History of Equestria, Commander Hurricane and Clover the Clever seemed to constantly bicker in half-genuine arguements/half-play constantly. And then they get married, to nopony's surprise.
  10. Berserk.Tropes E To H: * Everyone Can See It: Judeau sees the growing attraction between Guts and Casca and tries to push them in the right direction for the sake of their happiness. It eventually pays off.
  11. Castle.Tropes M To P: Under Mood Whiplash, At the end of "Always", Beckett and Castle are finally together. And then the guy that shot Beckett finds the man who had all the information about the conspiracy and says that, now that he has found him, he will kill Kate.
  12. Characters.Assassination Classroom Class 3 E: Under Tadaomi's folder, He is married to Irina in the epilogue.
  13. Characters.Batgirl: Under Barbara's folder, With Nightwing, at least for a time. And eventually get married for good, in Convergence.
  14. Characters.Marvel Comics Cyclops: Scott with Jean when they get married.
  15. Characters. She Ra And The Princesses Of Power Hordak: Under Will They or Won't They?, He devolves a rapport with Entrapta with significant romantic tensions. Both are separated from each other before it can go anywhere.
    • They Do. The two happily reunite at the end of the series.
  16. Characters.Star Wars Leia Organa: Under Princess Leia's folder, She and Han finally get together right at the end of Return of the Jedi after Leia confirms that Han is the one she loves and Luke is actually her brother. The EU confirms they tied the knot not long after.
  17. Characters.Yuusha Gojo Kumiai Kouryuugata Keijiban: Under Waitress' folder, She and the young priest end up getting engaged.
  18. ComicBook.Black Cat Marvel Comics: The first annual features the wedding of Spider-Man and Black Cat. Yes, that's right. But only Spider-Man and the Black Cat, Peter Parker and Felicia Hardy are still single. The law in the Marvel Universe is... weird.
  19. ComicBook.Tank Girl: Tank and Booga finally get hitched in Visions of Booga although it may have been because of a reality-warping Beat novel.
  20. ComicStrip.Nancy: Under The Bus Came Back, Aunt Fritzi's boyfriend, Phil Fumble, was a recurring character when Fritzi was still the star of the strip. He eventually vanished. He ended up returning near the end of Guy Gilchrist’s run of the strip ending with him and Fritzi getting married. He's yet to appear in Olivia Jaimes's run of the strip.
  21. Creator.Simona Ahrnstedt: Överenskommelser and De skandalösa end in this very fashion and the couples get together.
  22. Literature.Micro: Under Loners Will Stay Alone, Karen initially decides to stay in the micro-world alone because of this, reasoning that she "can't love anybody." This doesn't wind up happening, and she and her love interest do wind up together, although she does vow to return to the micro-world eventually in the end.
  23. Manga. My Neighbor Seki: 'Under Ship Tease, The Sequel Series shows that she eventually marries Seki and has a son with him.
  24. VideoGame.Deadly Premonition: Under The Stinger, After the credits, you see York and Emily, holding hands and kissing, in a spectral version of the diner while hanging out with all of the other victims
  25. VideoGame.Strife: Under Ship Tease, Pretty much implicit from the start with Blackbird if you get the Golden Ending, you meet her in person and kiss.
  26. VisualNovel.A Bridge To The Starry Skies: Under Anguished Declaration of Love, When Kazuma and Ui eventually express their feelings for each other in the Futogoyama festival at the end of the anime. They end up together.
  27. WebVideo.Cell Spex: Under Shipper on Deck, She was rooting for Korrasami to be a thing long before it actually happened, and despite being rather anti-romance, she was positively giddy about Varrick and Zhu Li getting married.
  28. WebVideo.Vision Of Escaflowne Abridged: Under Fix Fic, The Abridged series can easily be seen as this to the canon series, since it pokes fun at the show's sillier elements while staying true to the spirit of the source material, and fixes the show's ending by having Hitomi realize she can use her magical "instant teleport anywhere" pendant that "runs on Narnia time" to easily juggle life on both Gaea and Earth, and ends with her and Van getting together.
  29. WesternAnimation. How To Train Your Dragon The Hidden World: Hiccup and Astrid marry near the end of the film.
  30. YMMV.Boruto Naruto The Movie: Under Hilarious in Hindsight, This movie that focuses on Naruto and Hinata's son was released exactly 9 months after the release of the movie that showed them finally getting together (7th August 2015 and 6th December 2014 respectively).
  31. YMMV.Questionable Content: Under Arc Fatigue, The parade of saccharine strips focusing solely on Claire and Marten after their Relationship Upgrade (and continuing after They Do) garnered opinions that some valid plotlines were being Left Hanging in the meantime or otherwise going Out of Focus. Already mentions Relationship Upgrade
  32. YMMV.Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2: Under Heartwarming in Hindsight, Naruto and Hinata's "Secret Lovers" title, which freaked out quite a lot of shippers back in the day. The epilogue of the manga reveals that they are Happily Married with two children, and the Canon movie The Last: Naruto the Movie shows how they fell in love and became the main Official Couple. The instances of Ship Tease between Ino and Sai in the game also become this for the same reason.

Not redundant with Relationship Upgrade (0/50)

    Misuse (1/50)
  1. YMMV.The Amazing Spider Man Series: Under Franchise Original Sin, A major complaint voiced about The Amazing Spider-Man Series, is Peter irritating audience because he is not fully committing to a decision with his girlfriend (i.e. going back-and-forth between It's Not You, It's My Enemies and They Do and lapsing and backsliding as and when the plot chooses) can be traced to Sam Raimi film series, especially Spider-Man 2. At the end of Spider-Man, Peter decided that he can't endanger Mary-Jane since his superhero work nearly got her killed and brought personal trauma to Harry even if MJ returned his affections, but in the sequel, he's once again pinning for Mary Jane. This wasn't considered an issue in the Rami Trilogy for multiple reasons. Like in real life two years had passed between installments giving Peter time to mull over and reconsider his decision at the end of the first film, and Peter made the promise to stay away from MJ to nobody but himself. In contrast, the Peter of THIS series made a promise to stay away from Gwen to a DYING Captain Stacy and backpedals on the decision before the first movie ended. This results in Peter looking less sympathetic and more callous. You can't go back-and-forth from being an Official Couple; they're either an official couple or not

I think disambiguating They Do sounds good. The fact that They Do is the more recent of the two between it and Relationship Upgrade does mean it's the duplicate.

[up]Merging and disambiguating aren't mutually exclusive.

You can't always get what you want.

Oh right, I forgot about merging instead of cutting. I don't mind a merge and a disambig.

[tup]Merge.

Although if the usage seems to be exclusively redundant to Relationship Upgrade, why not redirect instead of disambiguating?

I agree that it's time for They Do and Relationship Upgrade to complete their Romance Arc and undergo a Romantic Fusion.

Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.

It looks as though the original idea was a series that continues on past the Relationship Upgrade and doesn't suffer Shipping Bed Death, which a) isn't suggested by the name at all b) would be YMMV c) would be just Relationship Upgrade DoneWell, or if you prefer, aversions of Shipping Bed Death, and d) was already being misused in that Internet Archive copy linked (do any of the ATLA couples get together before the ending?).

If you had asked me to define this trope off the top of my head it would probably be, essentially, Will They or Won't They? / Relationship Upgrade meets Happily Married. I don't know if that would be a viable, tropeworthy concept separate from the other tropes mentioned, though.

It feels like Relationship Upgrade is when they become an item and They Do is like for they start officially dating/get married but this isn't that big of a distinction tbh.

A lot of the "stable couple that feeds other plot threads" idea is covered by Happily Married and Beta Couple in any case.

These are two of my most favorite tropes on the site, so you know I'm going to vote for a wedding here. [tup]
