We don't accept Stock Phrases anymore which is what the trope is about, so just cut.

I didn't vote when I made the thread partially because it was past midnight and I was tired, and partially because I was waiting for more input. Now that that's no longer the case, I'll vote in favor of cutting and Yarding.

Salvaged examples:
Anime & Manga
- In Bubblegum Crisis, if an A.D. Police helicopter trooper declares they're taking a closer look at something, that's a warning sign that they won't make it.
- A pair of doomed fighter pilots in Fate/Zero go in for a closer look at the Cthulhu-ish monster Caster summoned. One of them gets swallowed by it; the other provides an opportunity for Berserker to demonstrate his ability to wield any weapon with perfect skill. Neither of them survives.
Films — Live-Action
- Alien. Promptly followed by one of the most frightening moments in movies. Slightly justified in that investigating the derelict ship was company policy, and because Ash was trying to trick them into bringing a living alien specimen aboard.
- Clawed: When two students find some of the Ominous Obsidian Ooze, one decides to go get a closer look at it.
- The Empire Strikes Back. Luke tells Han he's going to check out a meteorite crater, and immediately gets attacked by an ice monster. Unusually for this trope, this is just a coincidence, not an ambush by the thing he went to investigate. Though conveniently for the Empire, if had had investigated, he would have discovered the probe droid.
- Subverted in Scream 2. After crawling across the unconscious killer to get out of a wrecked car, Sidney goes back to see who it is. Sidney is unharmed, but her genre-savvy friend who stays behind gets killed.
- Under Siege. When a jet pilot is doing a flyover of the Missouri, he says "Going in for a closer look" just before being shot down by the bad guys.
Live-Action TV
- Babylon 5 fighter pilots who encounter Shadow warships can expect a very quick death if they say this. Results vary a bit more on random wrecks or Negative Space Wedgies.
- In the Adam West Batman (1966) this phrase is used when they decide to find a supervillain's hideout, only to get captured.
- In the Doctor Who episode "Flesh and Stone", a blinded Amy and a group of soldiers who are standing guard in the woodsnote spy a bright light in the distance. Soldiers being soldiers, some are sent off to investigate. The catch being that the light will Ret-Gone you out of existence, meaning more soldiers are soon sent to check out the mysterious white light, having no idea three of their former-comrades have already "gone for a closer look" before them...
- In the first episode of Ultraman, Hayata sees two strange meteors and says the phrase as he moves in to investigate. Sure enough, he gets so close that he collides with Ultraman's meteor and crashes.
Rides
- In the western scene of The Great Movie Ride, the tour guide leaves the vehicle when he/she decides to investigate the bank robbery. This results in the ride vehicle being hijacked by the bandit.
Video Games
- Throwing an item in the Hitman games (a coin, a hammer, you name it) will act as a distraction, and will casually get the attention of anyone nearby who can hear the sound. Generally, the closest person will take a look. You can of course use this to whack them round the head, take their clothes, and dump them in a cupboard.
Western Animation
- Parodied in The Simpsons, where Rainier "McBain" Wolfcastle decides to go in for a closer look after being told his shoes are untied. After staring at his feet for several hours, he declares that, upon closer inspection, he's wearing loafers.

Another day another ancient stock phrase with no wicks. This one has collected 16 wicks since its creation in 2008. There's likely a trope here, but it's hidden behind the stock phrase. With so little use, the only thing I can think of doing is yarding or kicking back to TLP.
