Like many Fountain of Expies tropes, Darkseid Duplicate is exhibiting heavy misuse. Rather than intentional expies of Darkseid, most of the use seems to be of characters who have various similarities to him- cruel leaders who seek to subjugate everyone around them (often through mind control) either For the Evulz or due a belief in The Evils of Free Will. They're often physically imposing, and cultivate fanatical loyalty from their subjects, though this loyalty is derived purely from fear.

I think there is a genuine 'Darkseid archetype' in here that the examples are hitting on, though I'm not sure if it's unique enough to work as a trope. Possible solutions as I see them are to try and broaden it to that 'Darkseid archtype' (which will require renaming, and possibly sending to the TLP), or to disambiguate it.

Wick check (archived):

Correct use (intentional Darkseid expy), 7/50, or 14%
  1. ComicBook.Captain Victory And The Galactic Rangers: As seen below, Blackmass is clearly meant to be a stand-in for Darkseid; he's a despotic ruler of a planet with a sinister name, who's in search of an equation to help him achieve dominance. Made by Darkseid's creator, originally intended to be be Darkseid but he wasn't allowed to use him after changing jobs.
  2. Characters.Ennui Go Main Characters: Darcy IS.... clearly meant to be the answer to the question: "What if Darkseid were a woman, a (semi-)regular human and a high-powered businessperson instead of an intergalactic God Of Evil?" She not only has Darkseid's personality and speech patterns, she believes in a "Maximum Profit Equation", a formula to engineer a product capable of total market saturation.
  3. Characters.Masters Of The Universe Evil Warriors: Gary Goddard admitted he was heavily influenced by the works of Jack Kirby, New Gods included when directing Masters of the Universe. Which is why he had the action moved from Eternia to Earth and essentially put Skeletor in the role of Darkseid. Maybe?
  4. SelfDemonstrating.Darkseid: You humans made this trope thinking that I was the inspiration to those pale imitations. I call it for what it is: creative and artistic incest.
  5. ComicBook.Marvel Versus DC: Thanos being one is lampshaded when he and Darkseid himself meet, the latter calling Thanos a "pale imitation of (himself)" (something Jim Starlin himself had copped to).
  6. Alternate Company Equivalent: It's no secret that Thanos is a Darkseid Duplicate, but the similarities also extend to his followers. His allies include sinister old men in dark robes (Desaad), warrior women (Female Furies), hulking brutes (Kalibak & Steppenwolf) and armies of horrifying aliens (parademons)
  7. SelfDemonstrating.Thanos: Initially, Starlin thought I was more akin to Metron, but he was later told I was more along the lines of Darkseid.note

Literally is Darkseid 1/50, or 2%
  1. Characters.Flashpoint 2 Advent Solaris: Okay so he’s only four feet tall, but he cups his hands behind his back, has omega beams and is a tyrannical dictator worshipped as a god by an alien world. though when it’s revealed that he literally is Darkseid combined with Trigon, one must ask does this trope even truly apply here? Character turns out to actually be Darkseid

     Expy of Darkseid's expy 2/50, or 4%
  1. Characters.DC Comics Mongul: A multi-layered example; Mongul is an Expy of Thanos, which basically means he's a lower tier version of Darkseid, more willing to get his hands dirty and focused on Superman and sometimes the Green Lanterns rather than being a threat to the universe at large.
  2. ComicBook.War World: Mongul is based on Marvel's Thanos, who was based on Darkseid.

Visual similarities and narrative similarities 8/50, 16%
  1. ComicBook.Jupiters Legacy: Blackstar is a huge bald Flying Brick alien who'd already wiped out an alien species and was a struggle for the combined heroes to bring down.
  2. Characters.Sentinels Of The Multiverse Villains A To G: He looks like a palette swap of Darkseid and has the personality and backstory to match. He also has a strong resemblance to Thanos, but given that Thanos himself is an Expy of Darkseid this is hardly surprising.
  3. Literature. The Tournament Of Supervillainy: Entropicus is a Galactic Conqueror who lives at the literal End of Time and rules the Death World Abaddon. He is a bald chalk white Physical God Evil Sorcerer who has a Quirky Mini Boss Squad of evil children as well as desires nothing less than to destroy all life in the universe as an Omnicidal Maniac due to his nihilism about life's meaning as Death's former champion. For this, he requires the wish that comes from winning the Eternity Tournament.
  4. Characters.Warcraft Shadowlands: Shares quite a few traits with Darkseid: ancient, widely feared, bald, towers over others, rules over a stygian wasteland, seeks out MacGuffins to become more powerful, and has reality-conquering ambitions. However, most people are quick to compare him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Thanos, especially after his goal of claiming the other Eternal Ones' sigils came to light.
  5. Characters.Marvel Comics Heralds Of Galactus: Besides the he tremendous power and similar appearance, he lacks the morality of the other Heralds, and though not a Galactic Conqueror in the traditional sense, he does view delivering worlds to Galactus as "conquest". His title as herald of Galactus has brought him into conflict with most of Marvel's cosmic stable of heroes as well as the heavy-hitting earthbound ones such as Hulk and Sentry, the latter a Superman Substitute himself.
  6. Characters.Ben 10 Vilgax: As mentioned below his hulking physique, reputation, goals, and personality all take inspiration from Darkseid.
  7. Characters. She Ra And The Princesses Of Power Horde Prime: Obviously an unintentional one. He's definitely ancient, top-heavy but has cyber-hair, has glowing eyes but they're green, and a completely different color scheme from most orthodox examples. But he has a huge god-complex and has legitimate claim to have conquered galaxies with the massive resources of manpower and material that comes with that. Makes use of Mind Control chips to cow populations and subvert resistances and seeks a Super Weapon in the Heart of Etheria that he intends to use to destroy the universe. His multitudinous prior successes justify his arrogance and pride even as it ultimately proves to be his undoing. Outright admits it's not intentional.
  8. Characters. The Eternals Eternals: Perhaps the most on-the-nose example in Marvel. He's a huge, bald man with Omnicidal Maniac tendencies, glowing, red eyes and an inhuman skin color. And likes giving big speeches. He also fathered a line of monsters and his most notable power is his eyebeams. To add to that, Darkseid's real name, Uxas, starts with a 'u' as well. Fitting then that Thanos would end up calling him 'grandfather'.

     Visual similarities 2/50, 4%
  1. Characters.Iron Man Central Rogues Gallery: Has a design reminiscent of Darkseid, but with the caveat that he actually wears an exoskeleton which gives him Mind Control powers. He is more of a Mad Scientist than anything else. Although firmly a foe of Iron Man, he has clashed with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain Mar-Vell as well.
  2. Characters.Kid Cosmic: His regular clothing gives him a bit of a resemblance to Darkseid, with it exposing his arms, legs and having a similar color scheme.

     Personality/narrative similarities 15/50, or 30%
  1. Characters.KND Main Villains: Though he lacks Darkseid's physique, he still shares traits with him, being a god-like Evil Overlord with an obsessive goal of bending everyone to his will, yet favors his braver, more rebellious son (Monty) over his meeker, yet more loyal his ideals son (Benedict).
  2. Demiurge Archetype: He also doubles as a Darkseid Duplicate, needing to have a host body forged for him to inhabit so he can bring his full power to bear on the physical plane.
  3. Characters. My Hero Academia All For One: Fitting, since All Might is a Superman Substitute. All for One is an Invincible Villain that styles himself as a God of Evil, had in the past a legion of followers loyal to him out of fear, gratitude or just plain madness, seeks to obtain One for All, which is the only thing capable of ruinning his plans, is one of the most feared villains in the world and is by far the most despicable and iredeemable member of his nemesis rogue gallery. Much like Darkseid, All for One loves to target those around All Might and later Midoriya out of sheer pettiness, like grooming Tenko as his successor and going to extreme lengths to break the young man, like exploding Lady Nagant in front of him just as she was about redeem herself.
  4. Characters.Apotheosis MHA: Along with Thanos his supervillain identity takes on some of Darkseid's traits, what with being an megalomaniacal super-genius who wants to be a god. The key difference is that he wants to improve the world unlike Darkseid.
  5. Characters. The Monument Mythos: Darkseid and Jesus are both godlike beings who seek to eradicate free will and even intend to use the same method: a Formula for the Unformulable for complete subservience.
  6. Characters.Dragon Ball Frieza: Frieza can be considered the Darkseid to Son Goku's Superman. He's an alien tyrant with incredible power, legions of devoted followers and aspirations to conquer the entire universe out of vanity. When he hears talk of some mystical macguffin that could make him the absolute ruler (Anti-Life Equation for Darkseid, Dragon Balls for Frieza), he focuses all of his manpower on claiming it. During the Tournament of Power, Frieza learned to guide the direction of his signature death beams much like Darkseid's Omega Beams.
  7. Characters.MCU Dimensions: He wants to conquer entire universes rather than just a single one by absorbing them into his Dark Dimension with said dimension being a place of pain and misery. Why he desires to collect universes is a mystery, unlike Darkseid's pursuit of the Anti-Life Equation.
  8. Characters.SWAT Kats: He's a big, ancient cat with Evil Minions (minor demons that work for him) that try multiple times to turn Megakat City into a conquered realm of chaos. He even makes alliances with various members of the Kats' Rogues Gallery to take them down.
  9. Characters.Code Prime Decepticons: A towering, sadistic, power-hungry alien overlord, with a legion of followers loyal to him out of respect or fear, capable of using ancient power to raise the dead, and literally kill people with a single glare, Megatron really fits the criteria for robotic Darkseid.
  10. Characters.MCU Gorr: He's a hairless, colorless extraterrestrial being with gleaming yellow eyes and affiliation with darkness and death who seeks out a cosmic artifact that will grant him the power to exterminate all divine life in the universe, as well as aspiring to destroy the realm of the gods. Fitting, given that his actor was famously part of a DC franchise before moving onto Marvel.
  11. Webcomic. The Non Adventures Of Wonderella: Killroy (originally from Killroy And Tina) is the imposing blue-skinned despot of a galactic empire. Played with, given that he initially wore a helmet that made him appear bald, but removing that helmet reveals he has a long, flowing mane of black hair.
  12. Characters.Jupiters Legacy: Blackstar is a huge bald Flying Brick alien who'd already wiped out an alien species and was a struggle for the combined heroes to bring down. Being a major enemy of the resident Superman Substitute helps with the comparison.
  13. Recap.Rick And Morty S 3 E 4 Vindicators 3 The Return Of World Ender: The Worldender is what, as the staff noted, "if Thanos fucked Darkseid and, like, had a baby, and that baby then fucked some other giant creature monster, that's Worldender". Like Darkseid, he's a hulking and feared Omnicidal Maniac who has conquered and destroyed many worlds. When his minions are found dead, the Vindicators assume he has Darkseid's tendency to kill his own minions for petty reasons... Turns out that he and his minions were killed by a drunken Rick just to show the Vindicators up.
  14. ComicBook.Youngblood: Darkthorn was created to serve as an antagonist for Youngblood, being a physically imposing conqueror who rules his one planet of D'khay. His costume is more brightly colored than Darkseid's, using gold and purple instead of blue and gray.
  15. Characters.Codex Equus Vicearch Iniquitous: As various drabbles and quotes indicate, Iniquitous is a Darkseid Duplicate who takes several character traits from Darkseid, being an ancient, implacable, and merciless ruler with grand ambitions and dreaded repute. However, whereas Darkseid seeks to conquer and bring total domination and suffering for its own sake, Iniquitous essentially seeks to 'improve' the world by spreading evil across the world because she sees Evil as a vastly better 'tool' than Good. This is emphasized in a Codex drabble when Iniquitous meets and develops a cordial relationship with King Grogar of Tambelon, who is much closer to Darkseid's characterization than she is.

ZCE and potholes 7/50, or 14%
  1. Pantheon.Maximum Security: Rick Sanchez boasts that he can solve the Life, Anti-Life and Anti-Death Equations, and knows what the Death Equation is. And that if he can beat Worldender shit-faced he can beat Darkseid at his own game...before immediately retracting that to flee from Darkseid's Omega Beams.
  2. Characters.DCEU Task Force X New Team: As a Green-Skinned Space Babe in a comic book movie directed by James Gunn, Mongal's comparable to Gamora or Nebula, especially with her father in the comics being a Darkseid Duplicate.
  3. ComicBook.Radioactive Man: Backseid, who's always seen in the back. Probably correct, but lacks context.
  4. Literature. The Supervillainy Saga: Entropicus is one for Skeletor, Darkseid, Thanos, and Shao Khan all rolled into one.
  5. Evil Overlord: Zig-zagged with Thanos. Unlike Darkseid (his primary inspiration), Thanos isn't interested in ruling or conquering worlds, specially under his creator Jim Starlin.
  6. Cool Chair: Interestingly enough, Jim Starlin originally conceived Thanos as an Expy of the above-mentioned Metron. Editor Roy Thomas said he should base the character on Darkseid instead. Thanos hover thrones are possibly a nod to the originally intended reference.
  7. Series.Jupiters Legacy: Blackstar was a Darkseid Duplicate alien in the comics. He's implied to be human here.

I don't know enough about comics to say if there's a "Darkseid archetype", but I generally prefer archetype tropes to Fountain of Expies subtropes so if it is real, [tup] to reworking into that.

To be honest, out of the superhero expy tropes, this one is pretty rare when it comes to blatant clones compared to the others. You’re far more likely to get archetypes that Darkseid exhibits than a direct homage to him. I’m fine with reworking this.

Before agreeing to the archetype, I'd like to see what that would mean in practice to make sure we don't have a trope that covers it already.

The page lists Galactic Conqueror, Omnicidal Maniac, and Demiurge Archetype. Any other tropes that have heavy overlap?

[up][up]I agree on whether the retool into an archetype trope is a good idea depending on whether this is a real trope and not apophenia.

The hallmarks of this, to me, are that the character:

  • has immense, if not god-tier power;
  • is massively built and physically imposing (built like a brick shithouse, to dip into vernacular), and has Super-Strength at the very least;
  • is either a cruel tyrant or has aspirations of such.

Tightening the criteria to those and a rename to something like Godlike Tyrannical Brute seems like the way to go to me, but I won't lose sleep if this ends up just being disambiguated.

I think that heavyset build is not necessary, but some form of Super-Strength is. An example I'm pretty sure would fit if not for the heavyset part is Sailor Galaxia, who fits the categories of godlike alien tyrant trying to subjugate/destroy all life in the universe For the Evulz and seeking a MacGuffin to further that goal. She even uses Mind Control to keep her subjects in line.

I'm not even convinced there's a real archetype here, TBH. One reason I've opposed a lot of the cuts made to other Fountain of Expies subtropes is because I've often come across examples of them in the wild, either in fiction or on this site, but the only characters I ever really see compared to Darkseid in the first place are Thanos (who's actually fairly different in practice) and Mongul (who does seem like a deliberately stripped-down version of Darkseid, but one character doesn't exactly make a trope). I don't really see a lot of meaning in the proposed Godlike Tyrannical Brute given how common all of those elements are individually in villains.

amathieu13 Since: Aug, 2013
#24: Mar 29th 2023 at 10:36:52 PM

yeah I've been waiting to see if someone in favor of converting could come up with something distinct, but Godlike Tyrannical Brute just sounds like a more specific version of God-Emperor (and most God Emperors are brutish because forcing your will onto a large group of people often demands brutality).

Many supervillains either have god complexes/superiority complexes or are a literal Physical God and use brutality to enforce their will. It's a pretty common motivation as the logical extreme for Narcissists and we already have several tropes to describe it.
