Sometimes whenever people try to spell my name (which I won't reveal on the internet spaces for personal privacy reasons), they sometimes put in a duplicate consonant letter by mistaken assumption. It's a valid variation, but it's not how my name is actually spelled.
SING TO ME, LEND ME THE SONG OF BLASPHEMYI remember in grade school when there were around 3 other students with variations of my name that mine was pronounced differently. That was amusing.
I've also met folks with the same spelling of my name

When you're alone I'm reaching out to let you know that you're far from strangers, like the saviorI know Ragna's name is pronounced like Ragnarok but for some stupid reason my brain wants to pronounce it like Ragna the Bloodedge.
FC: SW-1445-0294-1719/PSN: TekkenGirl4Lyfe/Currently playing: Croc: Legend of the Gobbos HDPeople have always had trouble pronouncing my last name. But I did at least meet one history teacher who knew my last name immediately because it has appeared in some famous US history events, it's just way more obscure and not an obvious pronunciation at first glance.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallI remember one time that someone misspelled my name (Jewel) with Jean at a deli's.
Beast Yeast episode 12 was peak. Everyone in that episode was great. Especially White Lily.I kinda get upset if my Troper handle (and elsewhere-used name) "Cibryll" gets misspelled in some way, whether with one "l", or the "y" and "i switching places.
Only reason I don't say something is because I'd probably get scolded by my sister—
Also don't like it if people just. Like. Assume my first name is "Charlotte".
It's not. It's "Charlie". No "-lotte" about it.
Also, I have a major liking for absurdly weird names.
Seriously.
Sure, some of my characters have normal names. There's "Gwyneth", "Taylor" and "Amaya". (Never played GTA games before, though.)
Then there are the less-than-normal ones, like "Glaice", "Crizelda", "Sjane", "Lavitka" and "Bloom". (No Fun with Acronyms thing here for me.)
Then there are the weirder ones, like "Jzydia", "Yjisah", "Vresun", "Tyamitica", "Ritesoa"note and "Cirxhale".
And then, there are the absurd ones that even I don't know how to pronounce, like "Rǻna", "Hêrlǽx'Ǔsuķeđz" and "Ǻnor Şernia Ōdaße Rÿnz Ńorn Ĩzanaģa Velůna Âņałanør". Yes, with all the accented characters (which might show up as blocks or something for some users, I dunno).
And sometimes the gibberish that results from previewing posts made on TV Tropes, like how that first one becomes "Rǻna" or that second one becomes "Hêrlǽx'Ǔsuķeđz".
This applies to everything else that I can give a name, such as locations.
Like. Normal location names such as "Sacred Isles", "The Tower That Never Was" or "Sonskyn Town" ("sonskyn" being Afrikaans for "sunshine").
Or the names that came about from Google Translate (or names whose origins are from other languages like Irish). Such as "Féasta Neamhní" (from GT-Irish).
Then, the weirder names like "Cú Chyðor" or "Panðyose" (which, at least for its lore, would end up with a different name at some point in time).
"He who would deem it worthy to swap the last two letters, would attain the power of the trios."
I sometimes do similar sort of things with other names, though it can get pretty crazy. "Can you even read the blackboard written clear as can be?" / "Can you even read his mind? See that kid's lost fantasy?"
Sounds sweet and flattering.
Thank you. :)
What would you say about when I type your name in on my phone, one of the autocomplete options that comes up is “Cinderella”? ;)
Come on! Let's bless them all until we get fershnickered! Some names I was almost given included Cornelius, Atticus, Simon, and Benedict.
Apparently, one of my aunts was strongly against the name Simon because of the sketches from Saturday Night Live with Mike Myers. "Atticus" was vetoed because our last name sounds fairly similar to Finch and that would probably inspire a Who Names Their Kid "Dude"? moment from a lot of people. Never really heard why Cornelius or Benedict were decided against, though.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.^^^ Clearly, they did!
I've noticed that Jalen/Jaden (and their variations) are for whatever reason a very common name among people in my age group. I feel like I know of at least 5 people at my school with some variant of those names.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.So guys, what kind of weird nicknames do you have?
Besides family pet names, my internet moniker Faith is the closest thing to a nickname I got going for me. I don't recall anyone ever giving me one, and I'm just indifferent to the idea of nicknames.
When you're alone I'm reaching out to let you know that you're far from strangers, like the saviorThis might get existential, but does anyone else suck at remembering people's names? It's been getting daunting recently that some people know my name ("Hi [insert my name]") and I don't recall theirs (so I just say "Hello" back). That is unless I see them frequently enough (such as my roommate and a handful of classmates).
I believe that, for me, it likely stems from a Safety in Indifference mentality developed since young - I moved a lot, got 3rd-wheeled once or more, figured I was better off doing stuff on my own - young me figured "what's the point in remembering people if we're all meant to move on?" Thank God that I eventually went to a boarding school in my later teens that restored my faith in life and friendships.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I remember asking for someone's name once in middle school like a week into the semester and she was basically wounded, from what I could tell. Hence why I'm hesitant to ask again. Used to think that figuring it out from other folks referring to said student was sufficient.
Of the valuable advices that the self-help book my dad gave me last year (The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz), making the effort to remember people's names and refer to them by name helps them feel special, and it's a great feeling to share around. I believe that I've taken the lessons of the book to heart (even summarised the lessons in a sandbox forum post lol), but this is one of the advices I've yet to practice implementing. Hopefully next semester, insha Allah (God-willing).

When you're alone I'm reaching out to let you know that you're far from strangers, like the saviorThe Dutch/Afrikaans "ij" trips me up - it's pronounced like the English "y", but I keep reading it like in Polish. So I won't be mad if someone pronounces the Dutch-based surnames from my fantasy writing incorrectly either.
I don't feel that I have problem coming up with character names, though. For example, the pre-rolled characters for my planned Dark Heresy 2 campaign all had Boss Subtitles, a surname and six suggested names.
The Overseer (a noble from the Administratum) had the nobility title of valus/vala (depending on chosen gender), the surname Doran, and stuffy, slightly archaic first names to choose from like Alexius, Gilliam, Sigmondus, Elsinora, Veronica and, as an easter egg, Maldonata. Or Mal for short. You can see where this is going.
The Ace Pilot (Exactly What It Says on the Tin) had the surname Vincent, and the first names were simple and kinda street, like Alex (a homage, if gender-flipped, to my Vampire: The Requiem character), Jace, Ray, Kait, Amanda and Zoe.
The Reclamator (gunslinging cogboy/coggirl) had a weird Admech designation as a surname (7-Zeta-1-3, no deeper meaning), and the names were all references: Elon, Morgan (also a reference to my Warhammer engineer character from the campaign we played as a group), Viktor, Alva, Kyrie and Trioda (a kind of an electronic component).
The Emperor's Light (nyctophobic pyrokinetic from a Cathedral world) not only had the surname Vianney (after St. Jean-Marie Vianney), but names all after Catholic saints or otherwise with very Catholic vibes: Bosco (after St. John Bosco), Franciscus, Theodorus (it does mean "God's Gift", after all), Aquina (after St. Thomas Aquinas), Maria and Theresa.
Aspirant (which actually is a police officer rank here) Zahn, the forge world riot cop with medical training also had short, simple blue-collar names to pick from: Cade, Omar, Royd, Enis, Maeve and Yana.

"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisI have a couple alter-egos I've given Awesome McCool Names: Eris Mosswatcher I got from a fantasy name generator- I've taken photos of myself in fantasy type garb and called it an OC named that. Damon Armitage came out of trying to come up with a screenname while listening to Blur and reading some book where a minor character had the surname Armitage (Neuromancer I think) - I've made music and credited him as a guest performer as a joke.
Finally for some reason for a while I didn't like giving my name out at Starbucks and the like and started ordering as Gustav. I don't think anyone ever asked for a surname but I would have gone with Gustav Swanson.

Noticed there have been a few moments of name talk, so I made this thread.
Basically, a thread about names and all that stuff. Character names, location names, titles, names in old languages, facts about names, their meanings, whatever. As long as it's related to names. Just that there's a lot of stuff about names that can be interesting. It is your choice if you talk about your or others' real names.
I'll go first.
Most non arabic speakers can't pronounce my name correctly, resulting in me just going with the flow. The main hurdle is the first letter of my name, which is a common problem for many other arabic names. (Ali, Abdul-[One of Allah's names])
I might as well share a fact about names that start with Abdul or something similar like Abdullah and Abdulrehman. They all mean servant/worshiper of God, and each variant is a different name of God.
