To-do list

    Thread OP
Note: This thread was proposed by Anarchist 2.

As found in this wick check, the trope attracts a large amount of ZCEs, PSOC-like examples and examples redundant with other tropes, with a 66% misuse rate. This thread suggested that the trope should be limited to only character introductions, and that the scope should be expanded to include non-female examples. Either of these options would probably come with a rename.

Wick check:

This is a wick check for Girl In A Box.

Wicks Checked: 50/50

    open/close all folders

Character is introduced by being found in a box/other sealed situation: 11 (25%)
  1. Main.Magical Girlfriend: Elemental Gelade: Human boy finds a cute girl sleeping in a box and she has the magical power to turn into a weapon. She forms a contract with him and they set out on a journey to a mythical place.
  2. Main.Abandoned Pet In A Box: See also Girl In A Box, which uses boxes to introduce a likely major character.
  3. Characters.Dice Funk Season 3 Ilium: Most of the inhabitants of Ilium discover her for the first time after the destruction of the Sacrum, when she's dormant in an ice sphere created by the First Frost, with the Hydra and her Couatl inside.
  4. Characters.Summer Rose Court: She has been trapped for decades in a box inside a hidden room within a hidden room within a hidden room under the castle when Ruby finds her.
  5. ComicBook.DC Comics Bombshells: Lois Lane's first appearance in the series has her being freed from a crate by the Batgirls. It turns out Killer Frost had her men lock Lois up after they caught her snooping around one of their operations.
  6. Trivia.Strain Strategic Armored Infantry: Dueling Works: As the other Fall 2006 mecha series that opens with the protagonist witnessing a sudden attack and running across a green-haired girl with a marking on her forehead in a guarded pod, then having to craft a false identity to chase the truth, Strain got absolutely buried by Code Geass, which had premiered a few weeks before and had an all-star production team.
  7. Characters.Final Fantasy XIV Disciples Of Magic: The Warrior of Light finds her trapped in a crate.
  8. Literature.Karl Sabers Space Knight: Alien Princess: Sophia, an alien with ruby red eyes and gold hair found by the protagonist Karl Sabers. She also comes with glass slippers.
  9. Series.Pandora: Xander and Jax find a woman who looks identical to her inside the Pandora Box.
  10. Characters.Concrete Revolutio Choujin Gensou: The Stinger at the end of episode 7 has Jirou and Judas finding a box containing Earth-chan's deactivated body.
  11. Anime.Zoids Chaotic Century: Fiona's first appearance is half this, half People Jars.

Character hides in a box/other container to get somewhere (and isn't covered by Human Mail): 1 (2%)
  1. Characters. The Brittas Empire: Carole had them stored in boxes as part of their return to the drawers of the leisure centre in "The Old, Old Story".

Character hides in a box/other container to hide: 3 (7%)
  1. Characters.Book Of Genesis: According to Jewish tradition, when her family went to visit Esau, Jacob was afraid Esau would want to marry her, so he locked her in a box (which is why she isn't mentioned when he arranges his family for the meeting). He is rebuked by God for doing so. According to this tradition, her destiny was to become Esau's wife (well, one of them, since by then he was already married to three pagan women), and serve as a Morality Pet for him.
  2. Characters.Ace Attorney Witnesses And Other Characters Dual Destinies: Myriam goes around in a box so she can eavesdrop on people more easily.
  3. Characters.Secret Six: A particularly horrific version. Due to a severe aversion to being seen, Junior runs a criminal empire from inside a wooden crate, and travels inside a burlap sack.

Examples better covered by other tropes: 6 (14%)
  1. VisualNovel. The Eden Of Grisaia: The Thanatos system core is Kazuki in a tube. JB was under the impression that if Kazuki was still there she would have had most of her body removed. However, just a spinal cord and brain are too difficult to keep alive. Her body has deteriorated to the extent that she cannot even dress herself and walking is painful, though. Better covered by something like Man in the Machine.
  2. Anime.Shinzo: Yakumo was placed in one by her father for her protection pre-series. Then she woke up 300/500 years later. Would better fit in one of the Sealed Index in a Can tropes.
  3. Literature.Johannes Cabal The Necromancer: Cabal's young love is kept in a semi-magic coffin filled with preservatives in order to keep her body stable until such time as he can restore her to full life. Might be covered partially under Human Popsicle? The "box" part seems very irrelevant to this example.
  4. Main.Travel Transformation: But, sometimes, the form isn't applied by the transformed, or not even a power, such as Girl In A Box examples, where the girl is just physically boxed up by some second party. Should be Human Mail, and also I feel like being put into a box doesn't count as transformation.
  5. Characters.Street Fighter Alpha: In Street Fighter IV continuity, the Dolls are still in Shadaloo's "care" and under Bison's orders. After Seth finds out that Bison wants to use them to kill him, he sends out Juri to capture them so he can use them as experimentation subjects; Juni and Juli try to fight back, but are overpowered. Cammy and Guile catch up but are only able to rescue Juni, whereas Juli and the other girls are locked inside capsules and taken to Seth's laboratories. In Cammy's ending, Juni wakes up from her coma in an hospital, with Cammy taking care of her; in T. Hawk's, Juli is alive elsewhere and under the care of a kindly elder couple, but with Trauma-Induced Amnesia. Sealed Badass in a Can would fit better.
  6. VisualNovel.Akatsuki No Goei: For some reason, Kyouka thought it would be an awesome idea to mail herself to Kaito. Misplaced Human Mail.

"Person is in a box" examples: 7 (16%)
  1. Characters.Hollow Knight NP Cs: The White Lady is confined to a solitary hut on the outer rim of the Queen's Gardens, unable to move and protected only by the motionless corpse of one of her loyal knights, seemingly not even aware of the other's passing. Can't tell what the "box" is in this example, so I'm just putting this here.
  2. Film.Passengers 2016: Aurora in her pod. An obvious reference to Snow White in her glass case. Gender flipped in the end, when a dead Jim is put into the Autodoc.
  3. Characters.Samurai Warriors 2: Gracia really seems to like stowing away in boxes throughout her 3:XL story. Also happens in Warriors Orochi 3 and 4.
  4. Webcomic.Gifts Of Wandering Ice: Elie, found in a little cryo capsule as a baby.
  5. WebAnimation.Eltorro 64 Rus: In The Gift, the titular gift is revealed to be a BLU Spy.
  6. Characters.Worlds End: In Episode 6-4, the gang finds her being literally carried in a box by Voro soldiers.
  7. Literature. The Apocalypse Troll: After her fighter is destroyed her escape pod homes in on Dick's boat and he opens it to find her inside, unconscious and covered in blood with a hole in her chest. It appears she isn't introduced to the audience in a box, so I'm putting this here.

    ZCEs and no-context potholes: 16 (36%)
  1. DarkerThanBlack.Season One Tropes A To M: Poor, poor Havoc. Also, the smuggled Doll in ep. 17 - being a Doll, she was treated more like a packed thing than a concealed girl.
  2. PoweredByAForsakenChild.Anime And Manga: After War Gundam X: Another Newtype (an adult Girl In A Box named Lucille Lilliant) was sought after to force her lend her massive Newtype powers to those who found her and her capsule. The Lorelei arc was focused on the Freeden crew finding said Newtype first and saving her. They succeed, and Lucille is able to peacefully pass away after being 15 years in a forced coma.
  3. Series.Firefly: River, which is often mistaken by many to be a Shout-Out to Outlaw Star, though Whedon has denied this. Specifically called "a girl in a box" in one of the trailers.
  4. Characters.Cerberus Daily News Crimson Chains: Abad seems to be tripping over these left and right.
  5. Main. They Copied It So It Sucks: When Firefly first showed up, word among anime fans was that it was a Live-Action Rip-Off of Outlaw Star, primarily due to the 'naked girl in the box in the first episode' and the Cool Ship. The two shows turned out to be very different, not in the least because Outlaw Star had 26 episodes and Firefly had 13 (and a movie). Then, as seen above, Outlaw Star got this too.
  6. LightNovel. Our Homes Fox Deity - Byakki/Shiro-chan. (May also double as Sealed Evil in a Can)
  7. Anime.Vandread: How the crew finds Misty.
  8. Characters.Sword Of Mana: Adaptational Heroism: In Adventure, he was pretty much just a vampire who collected a bunch of Girl In A Box for... no apparent reason, and was killed by the hero. However, this game changes him to a much more sympathetic character.
  9. Main.Third Option Love Interest: In Vandread, romantic tension is developing between Hibiki and his three love interests, and then in the second season a Girl In A Box shows up and decides he's cute.
  10. Anime.Robotech: Ariel/Marlene.
  11. Anime.Revolutionary Girl Utena: The coffin scenes.
  12. FanDisservice.Anime And Manga: After War Gundam X's Lorelei Arc gives us a surprisingly subtle example. There's a beautiful woman with an hourglass figure and long blonde hair, and we get to see her in the buff... so far so good, huh? Except that the poor naked blonde has been like this for 15 years, locked inside a capsule and in a forcibly-induced coma. There's no blood or fluids involved, but oggling such a beauty when she's like that feels just... wrong.
  13. Manga.Absolute Boyfriend: Night.
  14. VideoGame.Gloria Union: Ruru.
  15. Characters.Samurai Warriors 1: Bumbling Dad: Shows shades of this in 4 regarding his fatherhood to Gracia, who keeps stowing away in a box on his ship. He even admits he really doesn't know what to do with her Rebellious Princess spirit.
  16. Anime.After War Gundam X: Poor Lucille.

The "introduction" angle seems the only thing that distinguishes this from other tropes. But it should be expanded to cover situations like Human Popsicle, People Jars, Sealed Good in a Can, etc. Maybe also limit it to the person/people that are "freeing" said character must be unaware of who they are.

I'd prefer disambiguating between those tropes due to the bad shape this is in.

Either disambiguate or send the "character is introduced by being found in a box/other sealed situation" concept to TLP to gather more examples. Having 10 examples (minus an index) isn't too low/bad.

I think "person introduced in a box" has merit, I can already think of a few examples.

I feel the concept has merit and that this could be expanded.

"Open container, greet a new character" is definitely tropeworthy and common, but the page will likely have to be completely remade.

+1 to disambiguate and TLP "open box, greet character".

Whatever happens to the concept being discussed is a matter for TLP and not TRS, but we could probably place any existing examples into a sandbox while we wait for someone to make a draft.

Crown Description:

There are concerns that Girl In A Box is not tropeworthy in its current state, particularly due to heavy misuse, meaning that meaningful uses would have to be redone from scratch on the Trope Launch Pad. What should be done with Girl In A Box?
