Is this tropeworthy/Chairs?

Go To

Oftentimes here in Trope Talk, we get questions about whether or not a given trope is tropeworthy enough, or is an example of the kind of non-tropes discussed in People Sit on Chairs. These threads are extremely frequent, and per discussion in the TRS meta thread, this megathread was created.

This will be a centralized place to ask: is this article I found tropeworthy? Does it convey meaning or is it used to tell the story, or is it just something that happens to exist in a work? Ask here, and hopefully you will get the answers you need.

Remember, something that is "(people sit on) chairs" means it's happenstance or conveys no meaning. Something that also happens in real life, is common, is rare, or seems minor is not the same as being chairs.

As an additional note, keep this in mind when bringing tropes in, as noted by amathieu13:

a trope not being chairs/being deemed tropeworthy =/= the trope lacks any and all issues. It just means that the idea itself is fine in theory.

[up]I don't think that's really describing their narrative purpose as much as it is just describing their literal function as a tool. Compare to "Hammers: Good for fixing things when they get broken" or "Speed Bump: Good for slowing down speeding cars."

[up] Exactly. I don't see a purpose for the trope other than "it exists."

So I guess Trans Character, Cis Actor is fine and absolutely tropeworthy (well technically Trivia-worthy) with you guys?

I'd rename Caltrops to something that describes its purpose, in account to what Mythbusters said, to be similar to Smoke Screen.

Possibly redundant with American Law Enforcement it's linking to. Wouldn't be an issue if it was Hyper Competent Police Agency, as FBI are normally portrayed as USA's badassest team.

right, we have Interpol Special Agent which has a much more specific definition (an interpol agent acting above regional law, even though that's not how it works IRL) so having an FBI counterpart would make sense

[up][up][up] Strangely, it seems like the closest things we have to Area Denial Tactics are No Warping Zone (only against teleportation), Field Power Effect (only as a passive superpower), and Land Mine Goes "Click!". It certainly seems more tropable to me than having individual pages for Anti-Infantry, Anti-Vehicle, Anti Armour, Anti-Air...

[up]x6 Trivia items are not tropes and go by different standards, so “tropeworthy” isn't a useful concept with that.

Theremin is just "theremins exist" as far as I can tell

The quote and second paragraph describe a viable trope about theremins being used to evoke a specific type of sci-fi, but it might need a rename to focus on that.

The paragraph also mentions spooky supernatural ambiance.

Anyway I'd leave renaming for trs.

It's akin to Divided for Publication, so I think it's worthy.

So, we've had several IP threads for "themed level" such as Ship Level, Toy Time, etc., and I'm starting to wonder if many of these are really necessary. "A game level has X theme" seem to have the same issue as those often pointless "X Episode" tropes.

I thought about that as well. Doesn't seem like we have a Themed Level supertrope. Maybe that would help?

I personally think "themed level" could be noteworthy on its own—provided examples describe how the theme of the levels affects the gameplay, which can happen.

I think we've talked about Video Game Settings before, but since then I've got more on the side that "X-themed level" are not separate tropes and are also often not exclusive to videogames.

It would probably help to merge the ones that are more likely to overlap due to similar setting theming, whereas the ones that revolve around the most global settings (Lethal Lava Land, Under the Sea, The Lost Woods, Shifting Sand Land, etc.) are fair game (heh).

Yeah, the global setting ones make sense. They change everything from the way your character has to traverse to the sort of enemies you can expect to fight.

[up] That was sort of what I had in mind with my argument. Certain settings can influence the gameplay, enemies, and so on like you said—so we should probably focus on rooting out the bad ones and keeping the good.

Ascended Fridge Horror, unlike Ascended Meme or Ascended Glitch, doesn't require acknowledgement of the respective audience reaction. So is it really objective?
