So it seems MyAnimeList has already changed to its Spring layout, and I didn't notice, so just a week before Winter Cour 2023 comes to its conclusion, I will, as always, lay out my anime for this cour:

     From Previous Cours
  • Dr. STONE S3: Finished reading the manga, and now, I am ready to recap myself on the Exploration Arc! This will certainly be both scientific and exhillarating!
  • Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear S2: Liked the first season, and I can't wait to see more of Yuna and Fina!
  • EDENS ZERO S2: Same reason as above except I am more unprepared.
  • Birdie Wing S2: Huzzah for more of this golf lesbians show! It's been a while, and I can't wait to get back into this!
     Debuting This Cour
  • Jigokuraku: Heard great things about this + action with hints of drama = Interesting, as if typical of my taste...
  • Tengoku Daimakyou: The premise was interesting + Gen Satou is on main... Oh, and Yuuki Shin is there too...
  • My Home Hero: Seinen drama suspense gets me up at night.
  • Skip & Loafer: Had a hard time deciding on watching this because as a whole, I ignore seemingly-romcom plots like the plague, but this is SoL, so ok...
  • Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen wo!: Which I will refer to as "Megumin" from here onward. I have caught up to all of the KonoSuba anime stuff (including the movie), so watching this should be fun! Can't wait to go EXPLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSION again...
  • Iseleve: In for the usual isekai pill.
  • Opus.COLORs: Mostly male cast to a person whose anime taste is mostly "feminine" = super effective pull.
  • Yuusha ga Shinda: In for the fantasy hijinx, but something tells me I will regret this...
  • Watayuri: Another yuri fix.
  • Kawaisugi Crisis: Heard about this, and I thought, "Ehhhh why not."
  • Mashle: Typical me getting into a Shounen Jump series. No, I have not read the source material despite having the opportunity, but it seems like Jump's answer to Harry Potter, so why the hell not!
  • Magical Destroyers (Majidesu): So the underlying premise of Gyakuten Sekai no Denchi Shoujo but with more kinds of otaku? Ok, why not!
  • Dead Mount Death Play: DMDP from here onward. Loving the feels from seeing the trailer + Sou's doing the OP, and I have plans on getting into Sou sometime soon, so...
  • THE MARGINAL SERVICE: Got baited with the naked teaser, and there is not much to expect, so eh, why not...
  • Oshi no Ko: No, I did not see the theatrical release of the 1st episode because like with Skip & Loafer, I was debating on whether or not to get into this due to the same reasons as Skip & Loafer (probably because of the Kaguya fame that attracted many to this)... In the end though, I decided to do so. Going in blind, which turned out to be a huge recommendation from those in the know. Can't wait to freak the hell out, I guess...

No Info As of the Time of Posting:

Ousama Ranking: Yuuki no Takarabako: Wait, there's more Ousama Ranking? This cour?? Man it has been a while! It seems to be less a continuation of the series and more of a side story season; nevertheless, I'm excited!

EDIT: Decided not to pursue Edomae Elf. Ain't no way I can stay up so late to see that on TV...

Okay, airdates for everything. And there's a lot of new PVs and website updates since this thread started. Good time to check things out if you you haven't been keeping up

I'm not sure if Oshi no Ko has a triple-length premiere? The specific wording suggests it might just be for pre-air screenings, but they've been pushing this much more strongly than you usually see for those. Also, I have no idea why Niehime is starting so late

That makes sense, I suppose they want to get to the actual premise of the series.

I'm sure the pedigree of the team behind it also helped with getting the ability to frontload the show like that.

2023年4月12日(水)TVアニメ放送開始 第1話は90分拡大版!

"Will start airing on Wednesday April 12th 2023, 1st episode will be an extra-long 90 minute episode!"

So yeah, 1st episode is 90 minutes long.

One thing I often hear parroted when talking about a anime is how "Anime is really just there to promote and boost the manga sales." I'm curious how true that actually is, or if its more of a Common Knowledge thought? And what's it mean when you have something like Dr. Stone, where the manga is already finished?

I wouldn't say it's the only reason an anime exists, but the popularity of an anime can have quite the effect on the manga, whether it's very popular or if it tanks.

Most publisher want to promote not just manga but a franchise as a whole. Anime is like the advertisement for the whole franchise, manga sale is just the easiest way to gauge the level of success of the franchise. There are also merch sale, crossover deals,... those things still have value from even if the series already finished.

Anime do still bring in money solely on their own. There's been cases where the anime is 100% just for franchise fans (that recent Trails anime, for instance), which doesn't make sense from a promotional point of view. And plenty of others have been passion projects, originals and adaptations alike

  • MIX: Meisei Story Season 2: Watched the first season, expect more slice-of-life baseball shenanigans, as everyone should expect from Adachi. Definite Watch
  • Tousouchuu: Great Mission: giving this a trial balloon, it seems kinda interesting, but It's going to have to grab me. 3 Ep rule
  • My Home Hero: looks like this will be an interesting howcatchum style murder mystery, and whether the cops or the yaks figure it out first. 3 Ep rule
  • Loving Yamada at Lv 999: second chnce romnce for the lead girl. Has potential. 3 Ep rule
  • Alice Gear Aegis Expansion: Mecha show based on a gatcha game. But I like mecha. 3 ep rule

The spring breeze has come, bringing with it cool air, the scent of flowers, and the Random Curiosity preview for the Spring season of anime. A lot of tasty new treats. And I am RAVENOUS.

Second tasting:

  • Golden Kamuy: Finally coming back after abruptly stopping last year. Not sure how the production issues will affect the end product.
  • Tokyo Mew Mew New: It's back! First season did a good job of cutting down the fat and delivering, for better or worse, an authentic [90s=] mahou shoujo experience.
  • Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible: It sure went invisible for a while there! Haha. Honestly a mid-tier romance, the anime's biggest selling point is Kana Hanazawa's immaculate teasing voice.
  • Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2: Season one was solid in all aspects but I can't say it ever really managed to grab me. Maybe this time it'll hit different. ...Though before that, I do need to refresh myself on what happened in season one, though.
  • Smartphone Isekai: Unironically enjoyed the first season, using it as background noise for when I'm exercising, cooking, etc.
  • Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story: The golf lesbians are back and after the disgruntled pros and underworld mafia golfers, they're facing their greatest challenge yet— Japanese high schoolers. That is still funny to me.
  • Gundam Witch from Mercury: The Gundam lesbians are back and after the toxic parenting and corporate politics, they're facing their greatest challenge yet— their relationship with each other. Hoping the darker elements of the story get more focus this time around. We still need to talk about psycho Suletta.
  • Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato Hen: Very ready to get more of ufotable's insane animation work.
  • Ousama Ranking: Yuuki no Takarabako: We're getting another Ousama Ranking? And it's anime-original to boot. I would be totally fine with a Bojji-Kage road trip adventure. Let's go!

Smells like something special

  • Heavenly Delusion: I'd gotten through the first few chapters of the manga but then I caught the news of an upcoming anime adaptation by Production IG, and I figured I might as well wait for it. From what little I'd read, I could already see why this was considered a great dystopian scifi narrative. Easily one of my most anticipated anime this cour.
  • Jigokuraku: MAPPA and action shonen go together like bread and butter. Their work from JJK and Dororo also gives me confidence they'll do the horror elements justice.
  • Skip and Loafer: The anime scene has recently been doing me a favor by creating these adaptations for my to-read backlog. Thank you PA Works. I am already enamored with the art style. It's cheering me up already.
  • Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen o!: And in another round of "how out of the loop is fillerdude", holy hell we're getting a Megumin spinoff anime?! Oh, I am definitely exploding with excitement.
  • Otonari no Ginga: Another great romance anime getting an adaptation. You love to see it. Can we get How to Grill Your Love next? Please?
  • Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia: We might as well call Spring 2023 the season of love, because holy shit these top-class romances are coming out in full force. This is another manga I held off on reading because I'd heard about the anime adaptation, and I'm interested to see if the anime can do the source material justice.
  • Oshi no Ko: I wasn't sure whether I wanted to follow the anime at first, but from what I've seen, it looks like it's swinging for the bleachers. Excited for the reactions of first-time watchers, this ride goes places.

Seems like it will be a filling meal

  • The Dangers In My Heart: Apparently a top-tier romcom, and also apparently the lead guy fantasizes about murder all the time. Weird mix of bullet points, but hey, it piques my curiosity.
  • My Home Hero: Did not know this was getting an anime! I haven't read the source manga yet, but from I've gathered, it's a well-regarded thriller. The inciting incident in the preview already sounds fascinating.
  • Yuusha ga Shinda!: Actually pretty good at blending the ecchi in with the action and slapstick. To the point that I hope they don't censor it too heavily, as a lot of what makes the series work is how unashamedly it plays with ecchi shenanigans.
  • Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers: The premise reminds me of Rumble Garanndoll, except instead of mechas, it's magical girls who are the main weapon against a mysterious organization that's trying to suppress otaku culture. It's bound to be a fun exploration/parody/critique of the subculture.
  • Otaku Elf: Speaking of otaku culture, we get the opposite end of the spectrum in this lighthearted slice of life. Looks cute and I hope the elf is deep in the hole of degeneracy.
  • Ao no Orchestra: Is this what going to band camp feels like?
  • The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke’s Mansion: Another isekai, but it's based on a manhwa and the MC gets transported to the world of a murder mystery— and she's the victim. Now that's interesting!
  • Mashle: Pretty funny gag manga slash action shonen from JUMP that will usher in the era of muscle magic memes.

Doesn't whet the appetite, but it'll do

  • Loving Yamada at Lv 999: Love story between gamers, which is already an instant hook for forum-dwelling geeks. But will the writing be as high level as Yamada is?
  • Yuri is My Job!: Watch this show not have any actual yuri. That said, I do like my workplace comedies.
  • Opus Colors: The short preview already paints this as exceedingly pretentious.
  • I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too: Generic isekai but the MC gets to go back and forth the two worlds. So he bags both modern Japan and fantasy world girls. Truly a man to be respected.
  • Dead Mount Death Play: Narita Ryohgo is a creator always worth watching out for. I'm only not sure if studio Geek Toys can deliver. Guess I'm seeing if I just stick to the manga or not.
  • The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses: My favorite Seo Kouji work, and a shining example of how to write by the seat of your pants. I don't think the anime will be a sizable improvement over the manga, but it should be fine to check out the first few episodes.
  • Rokudou no Onna-tachi: I've also heard about this a lot in the manga communities. The retro art style is interesting for sure.
  • Summoned to Another World for a Second Time: The gimmick isn't half-bad, but I doubt it's gonna be utilized significantly.
  • The Clueless Transfer Student is Assertive: We've got a bajillion high school love stories, then now quite a few middle school love stories. So obviously the next logical stelp is elementary school love stories. Does seem like this will be more focused on the laughs and innocent puppy love. Neat.
  • Pokemon: The end of Ash Ketchum's story might as well have been a world-shaking event, and now we're dealing with the aftershocks. I can't imagine will be terribly different from the tone of the previous anime, but nevertheless I'm looking forward to following new protagonists.
  • Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts: Not a huge fan of the designs for the beastmen, but this otherwise seems passable. Really depends on how charming the main couple is.

Giving it a nibble

  • Tousouchuu: Great Mission: Even the RC preview seems copy-pasted from some press release. But I see "survival game" being thrown around so I'll check it out for a bit.
  • Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku: Jichou o Shiranai Kamigami no Shito: One episode to see how trashy it is.
  • Alice Gear Aegis Expansion: I'm obliged to check out any mecha show that comes out.
  • Kizuna no Allele: Some Vtuber thing? Except here the virtual personas are living breathing idol wannabes. I know who Kizuna Ai is, but she's not even on the poster. Who are these girls? Are they Vtubers too?
  • What God Does in a World Without Gods: The title is way more impressive than what the story entails, apparently. Shame.
  • Kawaisugi Crisis: What's the big deal with cats, anyway? Dogs are more fun. But sure, I'll let the felines stop the alien invader from destroying Earth.
  • The Marginal Service: Marginally interesting.

Leaving off the plate

  • Mix: Meisei Story: Wait, this is the second season? How the heck did I miss the first one?
  • Edens Zero: Been keeping up the the manga, and I don't think I'm interested enough to reexperience the story.
  • Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch!: Never watched the first season.
  • The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls – U149: I didn't want to pass up on an Idolmaster anime, but the gimmick is that this group is comprised of "short and petite girls"? Uh. Okay. The RC preview also gets their summary wrong, they namedropped the protagonists of previous Idolmaster anime, Cinderella Girls.
  • Dr. Stone: Haven't been watching the anime.
  • My One-Hit Kill Sister: Not into bro-con. And sis-con for that matter.
  • Tonikaku Kawaii: The manga is an exquisitely fluffy romance, but I don't feel like I need to see the anime for it.
  • World Dai Star: Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V "mixed media idol project".

Man, the season of love is looking STACKED. I know I said I was starving but this is a ginormous buffet of content. Welp, the next few weeks are going to get busy.

[up][up] Kami Katsu and Cheat Skill probably need more than one episode each to get their flavor but for entirely different reasons.

The former because I hear that it veers in a different direction than what you'd expect after the start (haven't personally read the manga so I can't verify if that's true or not). The latter because its brand of how it sets itself apart from other isekai will probably take more than one episode to get to. This is one I have been following and its really charming. Its still a power fantasy but the protagonist is likeable and has some actual depth to them besides being a generic stand in harem protagonist.

Kizuna no Allele: Some Vtuber thing? Except here the virtual personas are living breathing idol wannabes. I know who Kizuna Ai is, but she's not even on the poster. Who are these girls? Are they Vtubers too?

It probably has to do with Kizuna Ai "retiring" at the end of 2021. from the MAL description:

". Kizuna AI appeared like a comet in the virtual world, becoming massively popular in the blink of an eye. After winning the Lapin d'Or—the highest honor of the Virtual Grid Awards—five years in a row, she disappeared as quickly as she came."

To me, this sounds like these are new virtual personas inspired by her.

Okay, so, IRL, Kizuna Ai is on indefinite hiatus while her agency is trying to expand her brand. The anime is part of that, but just seems to be a fairly typical 2.5D idol project. To the best of my knowledge, the cast of Kizuna no Allele is not intending to become vtubers. It's just branding
