Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

  • Crossed: Badlands’ Four Fatal Englishmen and The Thin Red Line: Harry, The Englishman, was once one of the four body guards for the Prime Minister on the United Kingdom, who shows to be the most noble and intelligent survivors in the entire franchise. Once the infamous C-Day hits, Harry works immediately to try and halt its spreading as much as possible, even managing to prevent a nuclear war from happening. When society inevitably collapsed, Harry and his friends travel across England, using their tenacity and wits to slaughter hordes of Crossed, and saves Father Dennis Kingston and a group of school children. Harry plans to release a airborn bioweapon into the country, willing to risk human casualties to wipe out Crossed in the country and rebuild society. Constantly at blows with Father Kingston, Harry later listens to his warnings and refuses to go through with his plan, blowing up the entrance to the war bunker to prevent anyone using the weapons. When him and his friends decide to Face Death with Dignity, Harry quickly kills them to spare them from being tortured to death, and walks outside to the awaiting horde of Crossed with no fear or willingness to go down easy.

Since there are now eight candidates, I think a MB is needed: Here’s a sandbox to it

Vegapunk has been approved! Here's a writeup.

  • Dr. Vegapunk, the World's Smartest Man, is the head of the Special Science Group who's eccentric demeanour and silly antics hide a deceptively good planner. Having been hired from the government after working with the illegal research team MADS, Vegapunk has been known in the marines as someone who's 500 years ahead in technology, being responsible for developing the Seastone material, the Seraphim, the Pacifista, replicating Devil Fruits, among many other things. Finding out that one of his Satellites based on aspects of his own personality ratted out information to the World Government, Vegapunk immediatelly planned out a Dead Man's Switch in case his death was imminent, where he would make a worldwide transmition to tell everyone about information the WG was planning to silence him for, hiding the transmition snail inside the nigh-indestructable Iron Giant. Outwitting the monstrous Jaygarcia Saturn on not having put a bomb inside his friend Bartholomew Kuma and letting his daughter Jewlery Bonney have control on every Kuma shaped Pacifista, Vegapunk gets promptly executed and lets his worldwide call go without a hitch, giving the World Government a hard time stopping it, and letting his allies the Straw Hats escape the island from the marines.

Due to unfortunate events, i will continue to exist until further notice. (also i'm fluid now)

I think The Mole is a good enough pot hole, here I bring the final writeup:

  • Focus:
    • Nicky
    • Bucky Spurgeon is Nicky's father, who taught him the job. Under the fake name "Owens", he gets himself hired as Garriga's head of security, without the bussinessman suspecting the relationship between the two. Once Nicky performs his con and prepare to leave Argentina with Jess, Bucky captures them by crashing his car against theirs, taking the necessary preparations to minimize his own harm. He takes them to Garriga, who interrogates the two. When it's clear Garriga won't believe them, Bucky employs the Toledo Panic Button, he non-fatally shoots his own son, making Garriga panic and leave, and then heals him enough so he can live. He drops both of them next to a nearby hospital, while keeping the money from Nicky's con, arguing he lost focus. With his ruthlessness and inventivity, Bucky proves himself a nasty father, but a brilliant con artist.

[up]Thanks.

Also, Mirage goes before the Omnidroid in the tree? Since her actions helped lead into its creation and the opposition between the two is very indirect, I would think so. While the Omnidroid is a big important boss by the end of the movie, Mirage is still working directly for Syndrome and helping him to succeed in creating and perfecting the machine to begin with too.

So I would think she still gets the top spot for all those reasons specifically. If we go the reverse route because of the weight of importance the Omnidroid has compared to Mirage by the conclusion of the story, then that works too. Good either way we go.

So, uh, I've been nervous about posting on these threads. They really interest me, but I'm new, and it feels like people are going to be weird about that. For context, I've been watching this stuff without an account for months now, and decided I finally wanted a piece. And the fact that today's my birthday might've influenced that a tad. So... let's try the less scary thread (Complete Monster is kinda intimidating to propose on).

What's the work?

Process of Elimination is a fun little game that has drawn many comparisons to Danganronpa. Hell, the protagonist even looks like Shuichi! But yeah, the game is based around the Serial Killer known as the Quartering Duke, who trapped several detectives on an island in a mansion and has set up several traps to kill them. While smart, the Duke himself is far too vile and has a vaguely misogynistic line to Posh. On the other hand, his greatest adversary?

Who is Gourmet Detective?

Nadia Nikulina, as a young girl, was trapped beneath rubble from an earthquake for months. To survive, she ate the rubble itself. This gave her an immunity to most poisons, but also left her feeling constantly hungry. She soon joined the Detective Alliance, taking up the alias of Gourmet. She began to dedicate her life to taking down the Duke. And so, when forced onto the island by her adversary, Gourmet wasn't about to let him get away with his crimes.

What has she done?

Seeming little more than just another detective wrapped up in this whole ordeal, Gourmet actually was a spy hellbent on taking the Duke down, secretly investigating her friends behind the scenes based on who could be the man she was after. She quickly takes up the role of Team Mom and puts on a graceful and serene persona, becoming the group's chef and testing the food for poison, as she's immune to it. She and her friend Rowdy (who was apparently in on the scheme and begged Gourmet to let her come to Morgue Island with her) are able to get away with not doing much early on, but soon enough, Workaholic murders Rowdy while trying to kill Renegade, leading to both Gourmet's sadness and fury. Helping the group pursue Workaholic after he escapes, by the time she's finally able to confront him, he's a corpse. Feeling a need to get justice even though he's already dead, she tampers with the crime scene as a way of saying "screw you", I guess.

When the Detective Alliance reveals they plan on taking the whole group back, including the still-living Duke, who they'll find the identity of later, Gourmet jumps to action, knowing merely letting the Duke leave the island is a death sentence. She uses her status as the team's chef to drug the soup and, once everyone is passed out, strapped bombs to them that would detonate the moment her heart stopped beating. She then threatened to kill herself if they refused to cooperate with her investigation, or if the DA arrived before the Duke was caught. She proceeded to reveal that she's the coordinator of the anti-Duke conference who blended into the group for the purpose of finding suspicious people and dealing with them... non-lethally. She was only permitted to restrain at max. When asked how she knows the Duke is in the DA, she reveals that every victim was found in a location the DA previously investigated, something none of the other top detectives in the country took much note of, and they'd been investigating hundreds of these cases over years and years! The group is pretty mad at her, especially since they all planned to disobey the DA's orders anyways, so her enforcing of them working with her was a bit uncalled for. However, after they reveal they always wanted to do this, she's pleasantly surprised and is Easily Forgiven.

The group investigates previous locations before slowly unraveling Doleful as the Quartering Duke, and when he begins to wear down the group's faith in life, Gourmet nearly kills herself to kill Doleful. However, Incompetent uses his Denouement and sees that Doleful would still survive anyways due to his... powers? Gourmet is shaken, and remains silent for a while. However, it turns out she was actually just rechecking old evidence, and when checking the "This Button May Cause Death" note, she finds Doleful's fingerprints. This ultimately proves he, in some way, was responsible for crushing Renegade's head with the elevator door, and so she's finally able to arrest him with a satisfied smirk. She brings him onto a boat as they sail off, succeeding in her goal and outdoing the Quartering Duke.

Is she magnificent?

Hell yeah. She manipulates every single person who she wasn't working with to allow herself to investigate them under suspicions of being the Duke with her whole Team Mom act, and gives herself an easy way to enforce compliance amongst the other detectives. She ultimately is the final nail in Doleful's coffin and she completely succeeds in every way. Hell, they never even figure her out, unlike every other lying character. She reveals it on her own.

Is she a bastard?

While she is A Lighter Shade of Black compared to the Duke, she's not a good person, drugging and threatening to murder the whole cast, even though she's more than aware they can't all be the Duke. Plus, most of the cast weren't that old... Bookworm, who she also threatened to explode, was only 12! She's ultimately an Anti-Hero who goes to pretty dangerous lengths to take the Duke down, and endangers the entire rest of the cast to do so.

Verdict?

[tup] to Gourmet! If I made any errors, let me know. This is my first EP, after all!

  • Disventure Camp:

    • Miriam Foster is an elderly woman who lost her son and husband. During her time in Disventure Camp she shows herself to be one of the smarter contestants against her younger competitors such as seeing through Grett's manipulation and making an alliance of her own to eliminate her, and during the final four challenge orchestrating her biggest threat, Alec's elimination by convincing Ellie into throwing the challenges and getting Alec's biggest ally, Fiore on board with the deal of working together to defeat Ellie in the first part of the finale. During the finale, upon being backstabbed by Fiore and almost falling into last place she fakes a heart attack to distract Ellie, throwing away her shovel, she successfully eliminates Ellie and reaches the finsle. Facing off against Fiore in the final two, she sends Tom to watch her and Grett, knowing the two will try to sabotage her again, a decision that proves correct when Tom counters their sabotage attempt by swapping the flags on the go-karts leading to Fiore getting the sabotaged one instead leading to Miriam winning the first season. Returning in All Stars, Miriam gets placed on the Yellow Team, at one point she works with Alec and Fiore to sabotage the Cyan Team to protect Jake from elimination, successfully causing their lose in the episode's challenge. Noticing Alec, as well as several members of the team meeting with Fiore and Ellie, she eavesdrops on the formation of the Villains' Alliance, confronting Alec she threatens to expose them if they target her or Jake and when Alec throws the challenge to eliminate her, she reveals to the rest of her team that she knows about their alliance but lies that Alec has an alliance with her and Jake as well, placing seeds of doubt in their heads and even after she gets eliminated anyway she hands Connor a note and has him deliver it to the other teams, revealing the Villains' Alliance existence to them.

    • James Costa is a highly strategic TikTok influencer, knowing that the main couple of the last season became a fan favorite he seduces Aiden into an alliance and Publicity Stunt Relationship. James uses Aiden to expose Karol's intentions to eliminate one of the girls in Rosa Maria's alliance, getting her eliminated and manipulates a tie vote between Yul and Maggy. When Yul tries to poison Aiden, James tricks Yul into eating the poison mushroom instead getting him medically evacuated. Following Karol's return, James sees through her facade and records a video of her admitting her intentions to eliminate him and Aiden, leading to them sabotaging her and causing her elimination. Growing genuine feelings for Aiden, the two help each other in the final challenge where James goes on to win the second season.

Any more votes on my Akane quote? I also want to adjust her writeup a bit.

Current:

  • Zero I/Akane Kurashiki/June leads Crash Keys to save the world from Free the Soul. After being captured and experimented upon, Akane psychically sends herself to the future, where she disguises herself as "Zero", kidnapping several people, including the executives who kidnapped her, and forcing them into the Nonary Game. Monitoring the game alongside her brother, Akane strings along her enemies to see them eliminate each other and keep the truth of the game from them, successfully getting Junpei to save her past self before fleeing with her brother. Years later, Akane teams up with Sigma Klim to create another Nonary Game, forcing a younger Sigma and Phi to develop their own time travel powers in the name of saving the world from a deadly virus through complex planning, then infiltrates the facility where the virus was unleashed in the future, and through her determination manages to save the whole world from the evil Brother/Delta.

Rewrite:

  • Akane "June" Kurashiki, also known as Zero I, is the creator of the new Nonary Game and its Ambidex Edition who leads Crash Keys to save the world by any means necessary. After being captured and experimented upon by Free the Soul, Akane psychically sends herself to the future, where she disguises herself as "Zero", kidnapping several people, including the executives who kidnapped her, and forcing them into the new Nonary Game. Monitoring the game alongside her brother Aoi/Santa, Akane strings along her enemies to see them eliminate each other and keep the truth of the game from them, successfully getting Junpei Tenmyouji to save her past self before fleeing with her brother. Years later, Akane teams up with Sigma Klim to create another Nonary Game, forcing a younger Sigma and Phi to develop their own time travel powers in the name of saving the world from a deadly virus through complex planning. Finally, she infiltrates the facility where the virus was unleashed in the future, and through her determination manages to win the Decision Game and convince Brother/Delta not to use the virus, ending the series preparing to track down and capture the Religious Fanatic who threatens to destroy humanity.

One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.

Here is a quick one.

What's the work?

"No Reason to Lie" is an Among Us song made by NateWantsToBattle in a collab with CG5 and AmaLee.

Who is the candidate?

Ama's amogus is Lime, a smug and charming (and weirdly hot??) crewmate... who isn't. In the song, Nate's amogus - Black - is the Impostor who quickly kills off several Crewmates, while Lime and Blue (CG's mogus) are trying to stop him. However, as we get to Lime's part of the song, it's implied - and then confirmed at the end of the episode - she is actually a second Impostor. She lets Black do all the dirty work for her, with her part ultimately showing the two confronting eachother; According to her lyrics, Black ultimately starts calling out Lime for ditching him and seemingly tries to eject her, but Lime quickly proclaims she's gonna "throw you under the bus". Additionally, the "weirdly hot" part wasn't a joke, as she... kinda legit charms Blue into crushing on her.

When the two become the only ones left, Blue and Lime set up a trap to get Black caught; they set up a Crewmate plushie to trick him into stabbing it, which would prove his evil intentions. The plan actually works, and with the proof they got, Lime and Blue eject Black... only for Lime to start preparing to kill Blue, the music video cutting off at the last second.

How are they magnificent?

The easy one; Lime is a charming little 'mogus who makes Black do all the dirty work for her while gaining the trust of the crewmates, outright seducing Blue(???), before making a quick plan to backstab Black once they start getting into conflict; the plan succeeds, with her out-doing a guy who had MB potential himself, and then promptly killing Blue due to no longer being useful.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

The reason I didn't do this one a long time ago is because I wasn't fully convinced Lime is explicitly an Impostor, but looking back? Yeah, it's very clear that's not a crewmate. Her lyrics begin with Black calling her out for "not being around" (since her whole part is being directed at him), she outright says she's "throwing him under the bus", and at the very end of the episode? She literally turns black while a red background is behind her, which is literally the Impostor logo in Among Us, on top of now looking the same as the confirmed impostor Black. So yeah, she's very clearly an Impostor.

And of course, she's not too much of a bastard. She indirectly gets several people killed including her teammate, but the music video shows it in a comical, cartoonish fashion, and Lime still makes up for it with her charm and nice singing voice.

Final verdict

[tup] to another song impostor.
