Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

If Leone Abbacchio did gross and crass stuff involving bodily fluids all the time to the point where that was one of his main character traits, I'd be a bit more ambivalent voting him up. But if it's just a one-off joke I guess I'm fine giving a [tup].

Also [tup] for Mr. Kovalsky and Alien Hipporito.

Second candidate from Alias. This should be a simple clear-cut vote here; it's just a One-Scene Wonder.

    Who Is He?

Anthony Geiger, from the episode "Phase One", is a high-ranking officer in the Alliance of Twelve.

    What Has He Done?

About halfway into Season 2, Arvin Sloane mysteriously disappears. The Alliance of Twelve wastes no time replacing the director of SD-6 and appointed Geiger, who started looking through the employees' records. Since nobody in the CIA or the FBI knew anything about him, Sydney Bristow and her father, Jack, were ordered to get close to him and uncover intel. Sydney introduces herself immediately, and shortly after the pleasant greeting, Geiger quickly questions Sydney about her late fiancé, Danny. Being no fool, Geiger becomes suspicious of Sydney, telling her, "If the people I work for would assassinate my wife, I would not show up at the office the next day. So why come back? What for?" Sydney lies and claims she's faithful to SD-6, but Geiger sees right through it.

Sensing that Sloane may be a traitor, Geiger manages to hack a server and unlock secret files he hid on it. While looking at the files, he finds a strange e-mail. Geiger has a technician play back what Sloane was typing since SD-6 records keystrokes at each desktop (yes, this is a thing apparently). In a matter of minutes, Geiger discovers the truth Sloane wrote and tried to erase:

Jack and Sydney Bristow are double agents

Geiger corners Jack in his office and locks him inside, forcing him to call Sydney over the phone to get her to come in as well. Jack complies, but secretly warns Sydney that his cover's blown. Later on, Geiger has Jack taken to one of the underground torture cells, where he straps him to a metal chair and "interrogates him" for hours to find out who he's working for. Jack remains silent, although Geiger's treatment is so bad he almost perishes. Fortunately, the CIA manages to track down all the Alliance of Twelve offices and conducts a raid on them simultaneously. During the SD-6 raid, Sydney breaks away from the group and goes straight for the torture room Geiger and Jack are in. Geiger pulls his gun, but Sydney shoots him first.

    Is He Charming? Charismatic? Magnificent?

Geiger has done an impressive job of keeping everything about his life hidden. Apparently he has no records at all—no CIA or FBI files, no police records, no overdue video rentals—absolutely nothing. Even Julian Sark (whom I may get into later) knows little about the man except he's former German Intelligence and he made a lotta enemies.

In terms of behavior, Geiger is a Faux Affably Evil Soft-Spoken Sadist, capable of casually greeting you like a regular employee, but then immediately switching over to talking about personal and sensitive information without changing his attitude or the tone of his voice. Also, he's played by Rutger Hauer, so that's a bonus.

For over an entire season, the Alliance of Twelve has been trying to figure out if there are traitors or double agents within their organization, and for over a year, no one was able to prove Jack or Sydney were working against them.

Anthony Geiger managed to do it in a couple days.

"But Tyk! Arvin Sloane found out they were double agents first and left a hidden message!"

This is true. Geiger did have a little nudge here. But keep in mind that Sloane did not scribble down this information on a sticky note and hide it under his desk. He made an email that he hid inside of a heavily-encrypted server that almost nobody within the Alliance even knows about. Geiger was still smart enough to look through Sloane's files, hack into a secret server, and find the secret email. And even then, Geiger was the one who decided to analyze Sloane's computer's keystrokes, where he discovered that Sloane tried to delete information revealing Jack and Sydney's double agent status.

Is He a Bastard? Too Much of a Bastard?

Indeed. Now he doesn't kill anyone (onscreen that we know of), but the man is very blunt and not afraid of digging into people's personal lives. He starts questioning Sydney about her dead fiancé both to understand why she would work for a man like Sloane, and also to see if reopening wounds would make Sydney crack.

The moment he discovers Jack is a traitor, he starts torturing him for hours while questioning him, doing it for so long that if Sydney hadn't arrived when she did, he would've died. He also tries to get under Jack's skin by telling him even if he dies, he'll just move on to his daughter next and do the same thing to her.

Also, given that he's a high-ranking official, this means that Geiger knew he was working for a terrorist organization and wasn't a low-level officer who had been lied to about secretly working for the CIA.

    Final Verdict?

Easy yes here.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

What’s The Work?

Criminal Minds is a Police Procedural centering on The Behavioral Analysis Unit (The BAU), FBI profilers who’s job is to hunt various Serial Killers across the United States by understanding their psyche and their own clever ideals.

Our episode for today will be Season 9 Episode 17 Persuasion, where the BAU heads to Las Vegas, where the bodies of two women who (somehow) drowned surface up in the desert, and everything can be traced back to one intelligent mastermind.

Who is Marvin Caul? What Does he Do?

  • Once a Stage Magician who was renowned for his hypnotism, Marvin Caul was slowly losing the limelight and craved to get back into stardom. Discovering a community of vagrants inside of the sewer systems of Las Vegas, Marvin concocted a plan to get back into stardom.
  • Hypnotizing hot headed ex con Cesar Jones into believing Marvin was a powerful figure known as “The Doctor” Marvin manipulated the homeless community into working for him as pickpocketers and thieves, stealing from tourists and anyone else, with his plan to collect the money so he could rent a performance at a popular concert hall. Marvin has successfully lulled dozens of people all the while keeping his true persona as “The Doctor” hidden.
  • Whenever someone tries to leave the group, Marvin orders Cesar Jones to kill the for “betraying” them, resulting in three people getting killed from drowning/suffocation respectively.
  • Marvin eventually picked up hitchhiker Finn Bailey and inducted him into the robbery group, until Intrepid Reporter Sarah Renfield was caught trying to investigate in the homeless area for her paper, resulting in Cesar Jones catching and trying to kill her. Finn attempts to intervene and Marvin appears calm as he and Finn take her out to the desert while leaving Cesar to be arrested, and Reid exploits the hypnotism by acting as a agent for “the doctor” to get Cesar to confess his crimes,
  • Manipulating Finn to try and kill Sarah herself, Finn turns the gun on Marvin as it’s revealed that the former magician killed Finn’s sister, who was Marvin’s assistant because she wanted to go to another magician. The BAU come in and Finn is calmed down and led away.
  • Reid manages to trick Marvin by pretending to be a fan of his work, and when Reid tells Marvin he’s caught and to come clean to where his assistant was buried so he’d be at least known for his moss robbery, Marvin simply admits his crimes and asks for Reid to be honest if he was a fan before promptly being lead away by the cops.

Is He Magnificent?

I’d say so. Marvin is a charismatic cult leader who uses his skills in hypnotism and stage magician in order to build a cult of homeless people to steal from others, manipulating Cesar into seeing him as a messiah figure and killing any loose ends, while keeping himself hidden as a regular homeless vagrant. Even when he”s caught by the end, Marvin takes his loss little more than miffed and just admits where his assistant is buried and calmly asks whether or not Reid was telling the truth, because “he doesn’t like liars” and allows himself to be taken to jail with no resistance.

Is He A Bastard?

For Criminal Minds he’s pretty tame, being a mass theft and scammer, and he had his right hand murder 3 people, while he personally murdered his assistant. For criminal minds, he’s not that vile with the murders not being as visceral and brutal, with the murder of his assistant completely offcsceeen and not detailed, and showing no real sadism in crimes, only doing so for a means of an end.

Verdict?

Yes to Caul.

Yes to Geiger.

So, a bit of sleight of hand not unlike that of the man himself... I just proposed Gambit, but one thing I may not have mentioned? I, to put it politely, got a bit of a three-for-one deal on Gambit during my extensive read of the character's history. With two alternate versions of Gambit from the mainline comics up my sleeve, I may as well get to raising the bet.

Who is New Sun?
On Earth-9921, there is a man who is not known as Remy Etienne LeBeau. Sold to a government project as a child, the man who would become known as the "New Sun" was forced into a life of servitude and training to use his powers for the government... a government that learns they're Bullying a Dragon when their prized pawn destroys the facility and the project before promptly breaking right the hell out. As he later recaps to Gambit, New Sun spent some time with the X-Men, but became a pariah and left when he was the one to kill their universe's Phoenix (Presumably during their version of "The Dark Phoenix Saga," but I digress). Eventually, he stumbled upon Jean-Luc LeBeau, the man who adopted Gambit in the main "616" universe, who believed he was a prophesied savior. Taking up the name "New Son," he proceeded to do as Jean-Luc proposed and complete a ritual... buuuuut said ritual caused his incredible, godlike powers to wipe out all life on planet Earth. Whoops.

Seeking to use time travel to undo this awful accident, New Sun ended up discovering a way to travel the multiverse. What ensued was attempts from New Sun to save the universes in which other Gambits exist, arriving in the 616 universe and cutting a deal with our Gambit to help him survive. Having Gambit do his dangerous work for him and hoping to move everyone away from Earth, New Sun ends up foiled in that scheme. Continuing, he scans the multiverse for the many, many timelines of Gambit. Finally, he decides to try and force Gambit, newly upgraded thanks to one Sinister, comma, Mister, to learn control by deploying his biggest tactic:

The Assassination Game, in which New Sun sends the cream of the killer crop at Gambit all at once. Gambit survives? That should require him to master his powers and never again threaten the world. Gambit dies? His work here is done. To make sure Gambit's trying, New Sun even jumps into the fray himself disguised as the mutant-hating vigilante known as the X-Cutioner and makes his own bid for Gambit's life. Unfortunately for New Sun, it's Gambit who wins this round by plotting in secret with Archangel (Formerly Angel) to pretend he hates him. New Sun only manages to survive the encounter by revealing that he's another version of Gambit, and though he's trapped in time for a period, he escapes and realizes his name should be, in fact, "New Sun." (Hey, that's the name I've been using this whole time!) Breaking into Gambit's safehouse and attacking his friends, New Sun hijacks another ability and transports Gambit to his own dead world, explaining his backstory before declaring to Gambit that he's done trying to make him control his powers—if he wants to save the world from Gambit, he's gotta go straight to murdering him. The pair fight and Gambit is handily outdone by both the greater power and more experience, but everything changes when New Sun grabs Gambit, ready to finish him off. New Sun taunts Gambit that he'll never be on New Sun's practically divine level of power, and Gambit overloads New Sun with his own upgraded power, sacrificing it—and his ability to touch Rogue with it—but not before declaring why New Sun will never understand or defeat him. New Sun has told Gambit he'll never be like him, and Gambit's response just before destroying him for good?

"I DON' WANNA BE!"

Is New Sun magnificent?
Easy yes here. He's The Chessmaster and he and Gambit basically play an even game of Xanatos Speed Chess throughout the entirety of Gambit's 1999 solo series. He's just as talented as Gambit and is doing everything he can to make up for accidentally destroying his own world, constantly planning and hunting down other Gambits to ensure they can't destroy theirs. Gambit gets some over on him, but New Sun also gets plenty over on Gambit and runs circles around him ever since the moment Gambit cuts the deal with him, and ultimately resolves to just kill Gambit after showing him the truth. He's not without an ego but he's damn good and it's not mitigating to me, even if it's emphasized that he'll never understand Gambit quite as much as he thinks.

Is he bad?
He wants to teach/murder Gambit for a crime he himself committed and will happily endanger innocents to do so, but he's a literal Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds and a Well-Intentioned Extremist who wants to protect people from "himself" and who tried very hard to save his own world. The entire point is that he's a Gambit without any of the positive relationships or support our Gambit received, and he ultimately means well even if his methods are misguided and paranoid.

Conclusion?
Gambit may not wanna be him, but I sure wanna upvote him.

Here is my writeup for Graham Marshall from A Shock to the System:

  • Graham Marshall is an ad exec who is unsatisfied with his lot in life, having been passed over for a promotion and stuck in a loveless marriage for years. But when he accidentally kills a homeless man and gets away with it, he decides to murder the people in his life he feels are holding him back. He does so by making sure his wife is electrocuted while he is away on business and then rigging his rival coworker's boat to explode. In the end, Graham gets what he wants and has a celebratory cigar right in front of the detective who suspects him of murder but has no evidence against him.

What”s The Work?

Amphibia is a 2019-2022 Disney Channel Animated Adventure Comedy created by Matt Braly.

It centers on Anne Boonchuy as she is flung into a world of frogs, and being taken in by the Planter family in Wartwood as she attempts to find her friends and get home.

Today, we)re focusing on Season 3A where Anne and The Planters end up on Earth and the four trying to work to go back to Amphibia and take down the Tyrannical Andrias. Let’s focus on the Arc Villain

Who is Cloak-Bot? What Does It Do?

  • Voiced by Troy Baker, Cloak Bot is a relentless robot sent by Andria’s in order to destroy Anne Boonchuy (and also get the second Cynthia coven book). The Cloak Bot is a pure determined robot who can become invisible, stalking Anne and The Planters as it tries to take out Anne.
  • After Anne destroys it’s sensor, The Cloak Bot taps into the signal tower, and uses this in order to tack Anne and The Planters to the museum, and attack it. When it gets heavily injured and later finds them at the Thai Temple, uses a bunch of mini robots to try and dispatch of her.
  • In Anne-Sterminator, Andrias gets fed up with the failure and initiates a Self-Destruct Mechanism that will explode the robot if it doesn’t kill Anne. Having found its location due to Frobo rebooting, Cloak-Bot comes and chases down Anne and The Planters, using it’s upgraded tech of real world parts to try and kill them. Facing them at a junkyard, the robot nearly succeeds in killing Anne, but with the help of her parents, is ripped into pieces. But it’s proceeded to pull one last trick, using the self destruct feature to try and take them all down with him, and is ultimately defeated when superpowered Anne flies it in the sky and it explodes.

Is It Magnificent?

The Cloak-Bot is an intimidating Robot Assassin who is able to use his cloaking skills, arsenal of tools and mastery of tracking to try and take down Anne, and even when damaged, rebuilds itself to make it even more deadly. It can be able to use clever ways around its limitations, using a radio tower when Anne destroyed its tracking system, and attempts to take everyone down using its tracking system.

Is It A Bastard?

It’s a malevolent bot who’ trying to murder Anne as well as the planters, even willing to blow them all up in a last gambit.

Verdict?

Yes to the Cloak-Bot
