Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

  • Genshin Impact:
    • (Ningguang)
    • (Zhiyi)
    • Focalors is the Hydro Archon, bearing the burden of her predecessor's sin of creating Fontaine's people from Primordial Seawater. Faced with a prophecy that declares her people will be wiped out, Focalors sets off to challenge the Heavenly Principles themselves to avert it. She splits herself into her divine and human halves, cursing the human "Furina" with immortality, tasking her with pretending to be the Hydro Archon and demanding absolute secrecy about the truth, forcing her to live with her loneliness for five-hundred years while Focalors hid within the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale. Once Neuvillette and the Traveler stage a trial against Furina for her deceit, unintentionally playing into the prophecy in the process, the Oratrice gives a verdict declaring that the Hydro Archon is sentenced to death. Focalors appears before Neuvillette, revealing her plans to deceive the Heavenly Principles to make it appear that Furina fulfilled the prophecy, and admits that she had him become Iudex to make him sympathetic towards humanity's plight. She then accepts her fate, using the Indemnitium gathered by the Oratrice to create a blade powerful enough to kill her and completely destroy the seat of the Hydro Archon, restoring Neuvillette's authority as the Sovereign Dragon and allowing him to absolve Fontaine's people of their sin. In her final moments, she apologises to Furina, freeing her from her curse and letting her live her life as a normal human.

Would naturally be fully spoilered-out on the YMMV page.

Yes to Technoblade

What’s the work

Arc of a Scythe is a series of novels set in a world where humanity has conquered death. In the far future humans have created technology which will revive anyone who dies, grants people immortality, and all of Earth’s functions are run by the omnipotent AI known as the Thunderhead. However the threat of overpopulation has led to the creation of the Scythes, people ordained with the ability to kill people permanently (called Gleaning). This EP will cover the fourth book “Gleanings” which consists of several short stories set in the universe.

Who is Scythe Af Klint and what does she do?

Af Klint is a Scythe who appears in the short story “The Mortal Canvas” which is set not long after humanity achieved immortality. She is a lover of art who is dissatisfied with the artwork of the “Post-Mortal Age” since she believes it to lack the soul of “Mortal Age” art due to immortality making people complacent. In the story she approaches the class of Ms. Cappellino, an art teacher old enough to have grown up in the Mortal Age, and gives her four students, Morty, Trina, Wyatt, and Wynter, a challenge where she will judge their artwork in two weeks and the best one will be granted immunity from gleaning for a year. While she doesn’t say it, the students become convinced that the loser of the competition will be gleaned. A few days later the students go to an art museum where Af Klint appears and discusses a painting with Trina and Morty before approaching a barista and gleaning him by making him brew and drink poisoned coffee (even punctuating the death with a pun about the “mourning blend”) before calmly gifting the students some pastries.

When the two weeks are up the students are made to present their art to a crowd who will vote for the winner. The students present their artwork, with Wyatt’s piece, an algorithm which perfectly imitates the styles of the other students, being the crowd favorite, earning him the immunity. Morty’s painting is a nude painting of Af Klint which angers her and almost causes her to glean him on the spot before he explains the deeper meaning of the painting and its connection to the Scythes history, which impresses Af Klint. Mort then explains that he made the painting one of Af Klint because he knew she would be tempted to glean him over it and he used the fear of death to fuel his creativity, and Af Klint congratulates him on creating “the last work of mortal art” (something backed up later in the book when a character says the painting gained recognition as such around the world). Af Klint then reveals that she was always planning to glean Ms. Cappellino after the competition, and that the whole affair was a way to give her pride and satisfaction in her students so that she would die satisfied with her life (also some Scythes had been killing anyone born in the Mortal Age and Af Klint wanted to give Ms. Cappellino a dignified death out of respect). After gleaning a grateful Ms. Cappellino, she leaves the students to mourn her in peace.

Is she Magnificent?

She’s a bit of a weird one for this trope since her plan is a lot more philosophical and low stakes than a usual candidate but I think there’s enough there. The plan with the competition has two goals, to use her position, the gleaning of the barista, and the public spectacle of the competition to give the students a fear of death so their art would have the passion she thinks is lacking in post-mortal art, and to have the students create their best work possible so Ms. Cappellino would be satisfied with her life when she died. She accomplishes both of these tasks by the end of the story.

Is she a bitch?

As a Scythe her job is literally killing people and while Ms. Cappellino was content with her death, her method of gleaning the Barista comes off as deliberately cruel as part of her scaring the students. On top of that she made them all fear for their lives for two weeks and almost gleaned Morty in a rage so she’s bad enough.

Conclusion?

A bit of an odd example but I think she keeps.

Yes to Taejo and Technoblade. Edit: Yes to Klint as well.

I got an ambiguous wait-and-see case today. The character absolutely counts in their current state but will be a major player in upcoming content.

The World of Warcraft expansion Dragonflight has more or less ended at this point and I'm going to propose one of the main expansion villains now that he's unambiguously not going to be in the finale of the story. I've briefly gone over the expansion plot before in two previous effort posts, but here's a quick recap. The five Titan-blessed dragonflights return to their ancestral homeland on the Dragon Isles and get into conflict with the Primalists led by the Primal Incarnate Raszageth the Storm-Eater. The Incarnates believed that dragonkind should stay true their former elemental nature without influence from outside forces, and got into an ancient war with the five dragonflights. They were eventually defeated and imprisoned but the opening plot of the expansion sees Raszageth getting lose and successfully freeing her three brethren: Fyrakk the Blazing, Vyranoth the Frozenheart, and the most powerful Iridikron the Stonescaled. This brings me to today's candidate.

Who is Iridikron the Stonescaled?

Iridikron is the mightiest of the Primal Incarnates and their leader due to also being by far the most intelligent and cunning. Making his home on ancient Azeroth 20,000 years ago, Iridikron was the one who discovered how the proto-dragons could infuse themselves with the primal elements of Azeroth to fight back against the Order-infused five dragonflights. He manipulated the far more rash Fyrakk and later Raszageth to be the first to undergo the process to discern how dangerous it was before infusing himself with the power of Earth. Once he became a Primal Incarnate, he quickly usurped control of the Primalists away from Fyrakk and made use of his sister Ikronia when she chose to become a black dragon but regretted it. He used his own sister as a propaganda tool when she came to him for help by having her destroy villages and pinning the blame on the black dragons.

These tensions eventually erupted into a full scale war between the five flights and the Incarnates. Iridikron led them and plotted the war from his hidden lair while the rest led their ground forces, but the other three were slowly but surely defeated and captured. With the flights closing in on him, Iridikron began desperate schemes and tried and failed to create new Incarnates but found greater success by allying with outside forces to push the dragons back. One such alliance was with the molten giants called the Djaradin that allied with Iridikron when he promised both to help find and free their Elders and give them a worthy foe in the form of the dragons. In these final days of the war, Iridikron began making hypocritical bargains with the Void to come into effect in the far future should he ever fall, and nearly singlehandedly fought back the armies of the dragonflights by causing several volcanoes to erupt as they honed in on his lair. Ultimately, the Black Aspect Neltharion was forced to call on his own allegiance to the Void to overwhelm a bemused Iridikron who accepted his imprisonment realizing his ancient rival would be the doom of the dragonflights.

Millennia passed until Raszageth was freed by a new generation of Primalists, who in turn managed to free the other three before she died. With his first vision in this new world being the corpse of his fellow Incarnate, Iridikron held back the wrath of Fyrakk and Vyranoth and told them to be cautious and respectful of the might of the powerful mortals in this new age. Iridikron began calling up old debts and bargains and used his earth powers to locate the ancient underground testing grounds of Neltharion to both discover the powerful shadowflame he had created and the Djaradin Elders that were imprisoned there. He sends the power hungry and borderline insane Fyrakk down into the caverns to become empowered with the shadowflame while also sending his Primalists to free the Elders to secure their alliance with the Djaradin. He sends Vyranoth off to keep on eye on Fyrakk and also get her out of the way, and it becomes abundantly clear by the end of the expansion why Iridikron decided to do something so brazen so soon after his release.

Fyrakk was nothing more than a pawn and distraction designed to become a massive threat that the five dragonflights and their mortal allies would be forced to devote their entire force into hunting down and defeating when he infused himself with shadowflame and tries to set ablaze the newly born World Tree inside the Emerald Dream. This also conveniently gets the more moral Vyranoth out of the picture when she decides to turn against the mad Fyrakk. In the meantime, Iridikron begins making good on his ancient pacts with the Void. He allies with the Void-corrupted offshoot of the Bronze Dragonflight known as the Infinite Dragonflight and uses their time traveling power to go back when the five Aspects defeated the greatest of all dragons Galakrond. Iridikron begins using some sort of ancient artifact to siphon massive amounts of Death energy from Galakrond's corpse until his plan is foiled by an intervention from the Bronze Dragon Chromie.

Chromie destroys the artifact while the adventurers hold off Iridikron, but this directly leads to the Infinites corrupting Bronze Aspect Nozdormu into the Infinite Aspect Murozond. It turns out Iridikron is yet again using the Infinites as pawns as he knew Chromie would prioritize a timeline where Nozdormu would be saved. The players go back into the timeline and ignore Iridikron and focus entirely on preventing the rise of Murozond. He then succeeds at infusing the artifact before going through a void portal with the former knife turned elf Xal'atath. This is the last Iridikron is seen in the expansion and is obviously setting up the future expansion War Within set to be released sometime next year.

Is he magnificent?

He plays the every single faction in the Dragonflight expansion for fools and pawns and his personality revolves around being cold and calculated rather than sadistic or emotional like the other Incarnates. This is simple.

Is he a bastard?

While not sadistic or needlessly destructive like Fyrakk, Iridikron still sets in motion a lot of tragedy to further his own personal goals. Of course, he's so far nowhere near the level of monstrous many other villains in the franchise are.

Mitigating qualities?

He's obviously being set up as an antagonist in future expansions, with Fyrakk winding up the Big Bad of the current one, so I'm not sure if he should be a wait-and-see. He undeniably counts in his current state, and I've always been on the side of just putting up obvious candidates and cutting them later if need be.

Final verdict?

I'm thinking a fairly simple [tup] currently. If he needs to be revisited in a year's time or more, we can do that then. For right now, he blows his qualification out of the water so I do think he can go ahead and be put up.

Alrighty so, Techno's EP went way smoother than I expected, so I'm feeling more confident about proposing candidates from this work, speaking of such, I got another candidate for you all today.

(Read the original EP if you need to know what the work is).

Who is Quackity? What has he done?

Formerly Jschlatt's second-in-command, Quackity serves as a major antagonist within the Dream SMP. Creating his own country known as Las Nevadas after losing his life to the tactful Technoblade, Quackity has since dedicated himself to building up his own country. Being willing to use sleazy tactics in order to get what he wants, He manages to build up his own community of likeminded individuals that allow him to turn Laz Nevadas into a thriving city. In the last act of the series of the same name, Quackity manages to fend off Dream by creating an army of slime people, and even when he winds up being betrayed by one of his former allies, he manages to crawl back from it, preparing for his country's grand opening.

Is He Magnificent?

Maybe not in his early days, but he certainly meets it after Las Nevadas begins its run. Quackity becomes a full-on Chessmaster within this series. Using his wits and smarts in order to goad people into joining his country, mostly using harsh truths in order to get under other players' skins, he's a Manipulative Bastard through and through, and even if sometimes things don't go fully as intended, he still manages to crawl back from it and continue building up his country. Now when it comes to charm? Quackity has plenty, he's without a doubt one of the most entertaining characters within the server, and even when he becomes more serious, he still manages to be as charming as ever.

Is He a Bastard?

Yeah I'd say so, remember how I said that he's willing to use sleazy tactics in order to get his way? Well yeah I wasn't lying. Some of the things Quackity pulls off are just downright villainous. Such as how he fully admits to allowing Foolish to be sacrificed to the Egg in the Red Banquet and only coming in to stop it after wards, all for the sake of proving a point. He destroys Purpled's UFO for the sake of proving a point and to convince him to join his side. And he's implied to have directly invaded Fundy's mind and strted taunting him about how none of his efforts mattered, all for the sake of convincing him to join Las Nevadas. Safe to say, this guy is pretty scummy, and hell even before Las Nevadas he did some pretty villainous stuff. Such as when he organizes a raid on Philza's house just to find a compass that would allow him to locate Technoblade, as well as threatening the life of his horse in order to get him to stand down. Plus, as he was Schlatt's right-hand, he was also complicit in some of the other's actions (though granted he wasn't okay with Tubbo's execution, so he did have Standards, even then.

Is He Too Much of a Bastard?

Wouldn't say so no, most of Quackity's actions are pretty tame for the Dream SMP, especially when you have characters like Dream running around. The worst things he's done from what I recall is torture Dream within Pandora's Vault in order to get the revival book (which considering who Dream is and what he has done in the context of the server). There is also him eating Schlatt's heart at his funeral but like, this is played for laughs rather than some cruel act of cannibalism, and even then, Schlatt kinda deserved it for what he did, helps that it's Minecraft so it's not like, graphic or anything. So yeah, with all this in mind I'd hardly call being too much of a baddie, and while he did serve Schlatt, even he was disgusted by some of his actions. And while he does pull some that aforementioned sleazy stuff in order to get people to join his side, none of it was out of malice, as it all served a pragmatic purpose.

Any Other Issues?

Quackity does have his moments of breaking down as well as yelling, but most of these are short lived and he gets back on his feet soon after. And while he was mostly a comic relief during his early days on the server, by the time Las Nevadas has released, this stuff has mostly been toned down to the point where he pretty much gets rid of his Butt-Monkey status entirely. And similar with Technoblade, even if he has other undignified moments, most of them are OOC stuff that doesn't really affect the character all that much.

Verdict?

it's a yes imo, though ultimately it is up to you!
