Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yeah I'm going with a [tdown] for MK for the moment. While she could qualify in the future and there have been many more undignified eliminations than her's, she still got outplayed by Julia and eliminated pre-merge

Hmmmm

Can't really hold "she watched you poop" against MK for gross out, but that should be easy to turn right back on Julia, but that itself pushes fridge logic.

Being capable of hacking is not, in my mind, magnificent, but being clever about it is. MK wasn't the first to intentionally listen in on confessionals (that's Scott), but she is the first to hack into them. Similar for hacking the set (Scarlett).

Add in the pickpocketing and I'm a weak [tup], but I could change my mind.

[up][up][up] I dismissed Rhys as too obsessive and creepy but seeing as how there are far worst characters in that aspect, maybe he could have a shot.

Also I disagree with the horribly misjudge Joe aspect since he outright later says "sorry to see you have fucked up your new life" to Joe so I think his opinion on him changed to say the least. I will admit I can understand the other points even if I don't agree with them myself.

To clarify, I agree he is neglecting his work as a hitman but that is because he is trying to trick Ray and he does succeed for presumably the most part.

I am not sure if the Marienne thing is preventing since it doesn't really hurt him and Jke ends up kidnapping her anyway so he is still benefitting here.

Not trying to change your opinion but I am offering you my perspective and why I disagree.

Very weak [tup] to MK. While she does get outwitted, she takes it in stride, being one of the few contestants to keep her dignity intact after the game. Helps that she’s also uniquely magnificent too.

I don't have anyone in mind, but could "Trailer Parody" characters be MB's - i.e. - the character may not be one in canon, but the parody trailer edits footage to make them come off as one

Yes to Bowie, but no to MK. Exit aside, she doesn't get to actually do anything with the info she downloaded. That was all Bowie. Nor do we even get a full idea of what her plans were going to be with said info to begin with.

Based on the EP, [tup] to Two-Face.

Elliot's goals are to do Ray Quinn's bidding—which he has been and his tracking Joe also expresses not just that, but how good he is at his job too—and then to get out while tying up loose ends. He knows Joe's done sketchy things at least since he knows Joe killed Love and then faked his death, so he's clearly not a fool himself—and decides to strike a deal with Joe and ditch his duties to Ray so he can get out provided Joe deals with Marienne since her being a liability to Joe would be a liability yo him. All this is pretty well conveyed in those few minutes in episode 1–and that brief appearance in episode 2 where he quickly makes plans to ditch his phone once Joe calls him so he can continue to cover his tracks as he has been.

Was gonna ask about somebody, but can't remember who right now though.

Here's Yuuka's write-up:

  • Omoito: Yuuka Kazami "Flower Master of the Four Seasons" is a youkai who lives in the Field of the Sun with a strong connection to flowers. As the only one privy to Alice's grimoire causing strange occurrences in Gensokyo, Yuuka pays Alice a friendly visit to search her house and then take her on a hike so she can study her now sentient dolls, using Exact Words and misdirection to avoid Alice's suspicion. In need of more research, Yuuka and her friend Medicine Melancholy attack Alice's house to draw out her doll Hourai, with Yuuka blasting Alice out of disgust with her insensitive behavior towards her doll. Having baited and guided everyone such that Alice and Hourai start a fight that will confirm Yuuka's suspicions about the grimoire hiding itself in the doll, Yuuka fights against Marisa to ensure she doesn't interfere and then takes advantage of a tender moment between Alice and Hourai to attempt to kill Hourai and seal the grimoire away. Despite things not going how she wished, at the end of it all, Yuuka's only regret is that she couldn't find Medicine more doll friends, but still expresses hope that she can befriend Alice and Marisa.

  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency:
    • (Pillar Men)
    • Straizo was once a noble practitioner of Hamon and ally to the Joestar clan, but is corrupted by a desire for the power that Dio Brando possessed. Teaming with the Speedwagon Foundation on an expedition to find a stone mask, Straizo tricks information on Joseph out of Speedwagon until the mask is found. Straizo then easily wipes out the research team, transforms himself into a vampire with the mask, and disposes of his victims' bodies so that the Pillar Men cannot be resurrected through their blood. Tracking down Joseph to eliminate him as a threat, Straizo engages in a lengthy battle with the young fighter, in which Straizo displays a variety of cunning and Crazy-Prepared tactics. Straizo faces his eventual defeat at Joseph's hands with grace, offering words of advice to Joseph before honorably ending his own life with a proclamation that he regrets nothing, not even his own death.

  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven: In an alternate reality, Enrico Pucci assisted in the empowerment of DIO to help him achieve "Heaven", and together they rewrote reality to one where DIO reigned supreme. Upon discovering other dimensions, Pucci leads the charge in staging various invasions and mind controlling schemes against Joestar family allies, truthfully just baiting them all into a confrontation with DIO. Pucci deduces Valentine's status as a traitor and helps DIO get rid of him, and Pucci then personally duels the Joestars to test their abilities before sacrificing his own life to ensure they can't read his mind and discover the fact that he has lead them into a final trap set by DIO.

Gonna be getting some EPs off my to-do list, as my Sandbox is starting to reek of month-old proposals. So let's start this off with a really good contender.

What’s the Work?

Bayonetta. Y'all know who she is. Y'all know what these games are about. So let's cut to the chase.

Who is He?

Rodin, the Infinite One, owner of the Gates of Hell bar, is Bayonetta's smooth-talking closest acquaintance, supplying her with all kinds of weapons to help her in her adventures as long as she's got the halos for them.

What does he do?

Once an angel who helped rule over Paradiso before being exiled after taking part in an insurgency against them, Rodin, who was known amongst many angels as one of their most feared rulers, was caught in a trap and banished to Inferno as punishment, forced to make weapons for the angels in their centuries-long war against demons. But he managed to escape the depths of Inferno after growing tired of war and bloodshed to reside in the human realm under disguise, where he still remains undiscovered by Paradiso.

Known as one of the most feared, dangerous fallen angels out there, with his true power being greater than that of Jubileus, the Creator herself, Rodin primarily tags along with Bayonetta because she's his best customer, using his legendary gunsmith skills to craft numerous weapons for her. He does this by traveling to Inferno and killing powerful demons, then absorbing their souls before they die to create said weapons.

In the first game, Rodin primarily assists Bayonetta in foiling Paradiso and Balder's plan to awaken Jubelius, supplying her with an assortment of weapons anyway and anywhere he can, for a variety of prices.

In the second game, Rodin helps Bayonetta save Jeanne's life by keeping her body preserved in order to slowly keep her alive until Bayonetta returns with Jeanne's soul. Using Bayonetta to get to the demon Alraune, who just so happens to wield Jeanne's soul, Rodin personally stops Bayonetta from delivering the killing blow because he wants the demon's soul to craft a new weapon, which he hands to Bayonetta as a gift.

Returning for a final time in the third game, Rodin primarily shelters Bayonetta, Jeanne, Enzo, and Viola in the Gates of Hell from the Homunculi after they start attacking New York, telling them about Singularity's plan to destroy the entire Multiverse before doing really nothing else of note throughout the game, remaining a simple arms dealer who prefers not to get too involved with the plot.

Is he charming? Intelligent? Able to think on his feet?

Hell yeah. Rodin's a smooth demon who never loses his cool demeanor. He shares Bayonetta's quick thinking skills, and he often hides his goals from her, despite being an ally. Plus, he's a great bartender.

While he's primarily an observer who rarely plays an active role in Bayonetta's adventures (the second game gives him the most stuff to do), Rodin's backstory shows that he's really not one to be messed with. He's able to fool all of Paradiso itself by escaping Inferno to hide out amongst the humans, going undetected for centuries despite his frequent trips to Inferno.

And despite all of that stone cold toughness, Rodin's a big nerd at heart, occasionally quoting video games and making cheesy jokes. But that only adds to his coolness, showing a soft, relaxed, and comedic side to him that does nothing to detract from his intimidating badassery.

He's also an incredibly challenging Bonus Boss in every game, serving as Bayonetta's strongest, toughest opponent. Though even these showcase Rodin usually being a Graceful Loser who accepts his loses each time.

Is he a bastard? Too much of one?

While Rodin may help Bayonetta take down multiple opponents, he's primarily out for himself, more interested in his own personal goals than actually doing good. Rodin shares Bayonetta's lack of care for most humans, only keeps Enzo alive so that he can pay off his ridiculously high tab, and Rodin himself admits to Bayonetta that if she were to die, he would totally steal her soul and use it to make a weapon without a second thought, and will gladly use her for his own goals. Even in the third game, with the entire Multiverse at stake, Rodin makes it clear to Bayonetta that he's "with [her], not for [her]", only caring about her journey because her losing would mean his own demise.

And as Rodin's backstory shows, he will get his hands dirty when needed. He's feared amongst most demons for a good reason, as he's assisted the angels of Paradiso in their countless wars, and is an expert killer himself who prefers using his fists as weapons rather than the tools he crafts.

Hell, the games imply he's Satan himself. As frequent notes about him state, "he destroys to create, and creates to destroy."

But despite all of that, Rodin's honestly not that bad a guy. He's remarkably chill so long as you don't get on his bad side, and he's far from the worst demon in the series. Plus, like I said, he's a great bartender.

Verdict?

I think Rodin keeps

"Beautiful"

'Tis the hour of writing up.

  • League of Legends:
    • Sejuani, Fury of the North, is the charismatic and ruthless warmother of the Winter's Claw. Surviving harsh winters alongside her clan and never afraid to bloody her hands, Sejuani willingly raids villages and exterminates them to leave no witnesses, but deeply cares for her warriors. Once a friend of Avarosan queen Ashe and now her greatest rival, Sejuani uses daring and unorthodox tactics to keep her people alive, exploiting everything from magic to the land around her, notably defying a Demacian attack by using her mount Bristle's magic to bridge the gap between her own troops and the Demacian ones. In her boldest expedition, Sejuani attempts to bargain with the ferocious demigod Volibear. Fully knowing Volibear might try and trick her, Sejuani brings the shaman Udyr to stave off his powers and proves willing to declare war on Volibear and the Ursine to defend her people, even leading them in battle against the Ursine when the time comes.
    • Bel'Veth, the Empress of the Void, is an extremely personable manifestation of the nightmarish Void's powers. Born from the destruction of a Shuriman city, Bel'Veth is a visionary with the ambition to destroy and remake all of Runeterra. Knowing she cannot singlehandedly destroy the Watchers, Bel'Veth seeks an alliance with Kai'Sa, politely explaining her goals and reasoning with her to ensure the Watchers do not succeed in erasing all that exists, proving herself a far lesser evil than the aimlessly omnicidal abominations and even offering to spare Runeterra for a time in exchange for her eventual victory.

Yes to Anak-Krakatau, Samira, Elliot, Evelynn, Two-Face and Rodin. Abstain on Bowie because frankly I'm not QUITE convinced TD is the type of show where this trope can exist, whether he's taken seriously or not. Then again, we thought that about The Simpsons and Spongebob and they have pages. But an easier no to MK and Mr. X.

Edit: You know thinking about it, I'll do a leaning yes to Bowie. From what I remember we've upvoted sillier villains and while Bowie isn't exactly as silly as say, Gruntilda or Fawful, a lot of the jokes at his expense are kept to a minimum at least from what I can see. I'd rather not have another Alejandro situation though, where he's cut as a result of something from the following season. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
