Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. 'If a work is already reserved by another user , please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

No to Jezz.

  • Brainiac is an alien artificial intelligence who comes to Earth to miniaturize and collect the city of Stalingrad before supposedly being defeated by Superman. In truth seeing an opportunity to gain control over not just a city but an entire world, Brainiac pretends to have been successfully reprogramed, going on to serve as the Premier's most trusted ally in overseeing the Soviet Empire for over a decade. With the Kryptonian as his Unwitting Pawn, Brainiac lobotomizes dissidents into loyal servants of the USSR and constantly attempts to goad his supposed master into an invasion of the United States that will result in millions of deaths, all while never once brining up his ability to restore the shrunken city. Upon Superman finally deciding to attack President Luthor only to have a change of heart, Brainiac destroys Stalingrad and proceeds with the invasion anyway, throwing away any façade of subordination in his mad designs. The logical conclusion of Superman's subconscious desire to put the whole world in a bottle, Brainiac is a spiteful narcissist desiring to control everything to sate his egomania, with his ship rigged to self-destruct and wipe out the entire planet even after his ultimate destruction.

  • Savage Sword of Conan: The Stagbringer, mad prophet of the Lima Plains and fanatical dedicant of the primordial Stag God Oranah, has tirelessly worked for years to see his god brought to Earth. The Stagbringer brainwashes dozens of innocent farmers and influences them into ghastly rituals of Human Sacrifice, compelling them as well to burn their crops and even murder their own children. When Conan ventures into the Lima Plains, thousands have already been slaughtered, including nearly every member of the ruling family, while thousands more from the neighboring country are threatened with starvation because of the crop-burning. Ultimately, the Stagbringer seeks to bring Oranah down so it may set the entire world aflame, seemingly for nothing but than the joy of wanton destruction.

Lemme get up another Marvel, too. Here's an X-Men baddie I'm a little bit unsure of but I think is worth the post.

Exclusively from X-Treme X-Men, under the pen of Chris Claremont.

    What has Elias Bogan done?
  • Described repeatedly as a "predator" always on the lookout for new lives to break into new "pets" through Mind Rape and addictive drugs, Elias Bogan is a reclusive billionaire who serves as the comic's most recurring Arc Villain. He's a bodiless psychic who prefers "satisfaction with none of the risk"—ergo he favors brainwashing and possession from afar, making people torture and kill their own friends and allies. Bogan has gone from hunting ground to hunting ground for what's implied to be centuries, devouring all his his wake. He's also the founder of the Hellfire Club; not only was he their first Lord Imperial, complete with his own headquarters in L.A., he was the inspiration for the original chapter of the Hellfire Club founded in the late 1700s. In said headquarters, we see Bogan may have been alive as far back as the time of the dinosaurs. He's filled up an entire library with nothing but archives of his cruelty, of the pain and destruction of others.
  • First appearing in the "Schism" arc (issues 20-23) we see that Bogan has set up in the community of Valle Soleada, which he's turned into his "private hunting preserve." Bogan takes and breaks innocent people at his leisure; his latest victim, the focus of the arc, is the young mutant teenager Jeffrey Garrett.
  • When Jeffrey and his family—his parents, his younger sister and his baby brother—were starving, poor and desperate, Bogan convinced them to sell themselves to him with the promise of money. Bogan had no intention of paying them—he put the entire family through excruciating, prolonged torture in order to activate their metagenes. Only Jeffrey's metagene activated; as the culmination of this grotesque torture, Jeffrey was forced to euthanize his entire family to put them out of their misery, almost breaking him completely. And Bogan has no trouble mocking him about this later, intending to recapture Jeffrey and reduce him to his broken slave.
  • Through this arc and the next two he appears in ("Intifada"—#31-35—and "Prisoner of Fire"—#40-45) Bogan takes a particular pleasure in trying to torture and kill the X-Men. He factors into the backstory of Sage, AKA Tessa; when Tessa was still the assistant of Sebastian Shaw, she was privy to a gamble between Sebastian Shaw and Elias Bogan. If Shaw won, he'd get Bogan's fortunes; if Bogan won, he got Emma Frost as his newest slave. Against all odds Shaw won and Bogan honored the debt...until the day he came to exact revenge and forcing Shaw into another, one-sided deal; either Shaw gave him Tessa or Bogan destroyed everything Shaw owned. Shaw agreed to the former; Tessa only barely escaped, but Bogan branded her across the eyes to remind them of this unfinished business.
  • Bogan engages in one bout of sadistic torture and Mind Rape after the other. He manages to capture Emma Frost and brainwashes her into becoming his slave; has his minion Xander torture Storm and Bishop; escalates Bishop's torture even further later when he agonizingly probes Bishop's mind and edits his memories, a torture that also leaves Bishop as Bogan's broken slave; and, while trying to have every X-Man he hasn't already possessed killed by their own brainwashed allies, tries to break Sage into his slave to make up for their "unfinished business." He repeatedly promises to rewrite the minds of every X-Men he's possessed to make them enjoy the pain he's going to inflict on them and make him beg for more.
  • Bogan also invades X-Corporation, and seemingly just for his own amusement, enslaves Empath and in turn uses the latter's powers of controlling emotions to make Roberto da Costa and Amara Aquilla begin making out against their will. He leaves all three of them enough awareness to feel horror over what they're doing while being powerless to stop it.
    Heinous standard?
  • Here's my one concern. For a villain of Bogan's stature (he's a billionaire able to threaten people like Sebastian Shaw, which means he's got a lot of resources at his disposal) his exact body count is pretty nebulous and a lot of his overall villainy works off pattern and inference, instead of blatant episodes of mass murder and destruction.
  • Brass tracks: we know he routinely breaks and murders innocents and has been doing so at minimum a few centuries, but his "trophy room" heavily implies he may well have been walking around since the time of the dinosaurs (assuming the dinosaurs he has mounted in his room aren't from the Savage Land, but the comic is heavily implying they're not and Bogan is freaking ancient). Likewise, while their exact contents are Offstage Villainy, the sheer volume of the archives in the aforementioned trophy room imply a gigantic victim count he's reaped throughout the time he's been alive.
  • What we know for certain—he was the founder of the Hellfire Club, which (even indirectly, since he doesn't seem to be interested much in managing the club in the present day) puts him behind a ton of bloodshed. Personally, Bogan racks up horrible torture and Mind Rape every issue he's in that sticks out even by Chris Claremont's usual standards (and this is Chris Claremont; he looooves his Mind Rape). What he does to Jeffrey and his family is a stand-out crime even by the lofty standards of X-Men's biggest bads.
  • Overall, Bogan is mostly quality over quantity, albeit with constant hints at a pattern dating back, at minimum, centuries (which helps him stick out more next to villains like Shaw, Selene, the Shadow King and so on). The overall issue is that, while he was clearly intended to appear past X-Treme X-Men, he never did and whatever was going on with him become another abandoned storyline, so while we have tantalizing glimmers of larger plotlines he never really breaks out of the low-scale "break people into my pets" MO.
  • Granted, that MO is sick. His sadism is through the roof; whether or not his abhorrent personal villainy combined with the pattern qualifies him next to some of the worst villains in X-Men, I'll leave you to decide.
    Redeeming qualities?
  • Nothing. Bogan can't even honor his bargain with Sebastian Shaw without coming back later to exact revenge.

Nah. A lot of Shaw's redeeming qualities are inconsistent (such as his relationship with his wife) but others aren't, and you'd still need to measure him against others already up on X-Men. One small advantage Bogan has is that his screentime is about a tenth of most of the bigger bads.

What's the work?

What if Palpatine killed Rey and Ben on Exegol? is a Star Wars What If fanfic on YouTube by Star Wars Elseworlds about what would happen if Palpatine killed Rey and Kylo Ren.

What has Palpatine done?

In his battle with Rey, this time he manages to overpower his granddaughter and electrocutes her to death while he is laughing at her suffering. He then does the same thing to the redeemed Kylo Ren.

After the rebels destroy most of his ships and retreat to their base, Palpatine orders his forces to track them down and destroy the jungle planet which kills all the rebels, including Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, R2 and C-Tripio.

He then conquers the entire galaxy with his planet-destroying ships and any star system which resists him is promptly wiped out.

During his reign, he enslaves or commits genocide against many alien, non-human species which he deems to be unworthy to exist in his galaxy. It's explicitely mentioned that billions to trillions of beings are forced into slavery.

The Great Cleansing of the Sith Eternal is an action enacted by Emperor Palpatine which oversees the execution of any individual who doesn't agree with the new order and many planets are purged.

He regularly conducts experiments to achieve a level of godhood with the goal to reshape reality to his will.

He kidnaps many Force-sensitive children and even babies across the galaxy to turn to the Dark Side and make into his servants.

Palpatine also creates the Sith Eternal Cult which preaches the complete devotion to the Sith Emperor. All other religions are outlawed and the people who are caught with objects from other religions would be publicly executed.

Many decades after Palptine conquers the galaxy, rumors appear that Palpatine plans to conquer other galaxies and spread his rule across them as well.

Mitigating factors?

Nothing redeemable. Characters like Vitiate, Darth Krayt and Abeloth are mentioned within the story, but nothing is mentioned about what they do, so Palpatine is easily the most heinous.

Admittedly, there is not much of a plot because this fanfic video mostly details what Palpatine would do if he had won, but I would say there is still enough for him to qualify for this trope. He is still given sadistic personality in the way in which he enjoys Rey and Kylo Ren's suffering while he electrocutes them and is still portrayed as a megalomaniac who wants absolute devotion from his subjects, commits genocide against entire species if he deems them to be unworthy for his new empire and even wants to reshape reality.

Conclusion

Yes.

Abstain on Palpatine, he sounds ville, but I am not sure there is enought story.

On that note I have another Lupin III villain feel it is best to ask before proposing. He is the Mad Scientist who created an earthquake machine. He threathens to destroy town of Pisa unless Italian goverment pays him and after being bambozled first time threathens to destroy whole Italy. When he captures Lupin and co he believing them to be spies, goes forth with destruction of Italy stating that world is next. Only to stop before it can do more than than straighten leanin tower when he realises they aren’t spies.

He mostly threathens, but he gives demonstration by destroying the desete town at the begining of episode and makes clear that he is capable and villing to go with the threats.

Does it sound worthy of an ep?

[up] Go for him.

Regarding Palpatine, we have keepers from things like The World of Ice & Fire and Histories and Lore which have a very similar way to tell the story through indirect narration and some of the keepers from there have even less written about them, not to mention that this fanfic actually starts with vivid descriptions of Rey's emotional state while battling Palpatine and while he is torturing her and mocking her. The fanfic continues for more than 15 minutes, so I would say there is enough.

A story doesn't need to be super complex for it to have a CM.

Gonna lean [tup] to Palpatine, having watched the video.

From red jacket episode “Shaky Pisa”

Who is Dr. Paolo? What has he done?

Formerly a scientist of National Earthsquake Institute, Paolo was fired for unethical experints. Angry he created an earthquake machine and decided to blackmail Italy. Destroying deserteed village as a demonstration, Paolo gives Italian goverment ultimatum, give him 1 billion dolara or Pisa will be destroyed.

He has them drop money on the designated location in the ocean to be picked by his trained doplhins. Lupin and team try to take money to track him, but it ends up scatering the money, with Paolo getting and empty briefcase. Anders doctor raised the price on the 2 billion till the end of the day or he will destroy entire Italy.

Lupin, Goemon and Jiggen succesfully find his base, but end up captured. Believing them to be spies, Paolo activestes the machine, noting that first Pisa will be destroyed, then Italy and finnaly the entire world. Luckily before he can cause much damage Zenigata (who is conviced this is Lupin’s scheme) comes with the money, much to Paolo’s confusion. Lupin frees himself and the others and destroys Paolo’s machine. Paolo activate self destruction of his Island base, Laughthing!ad as he and his assistant are killed.

Mitigating factors?

He is crazy, but it is not in any agency impairing way. His mannerisams and hammines are little humorous, but the fact that he is mad scientist threathing destruction of the world is played seriously.

Heinouss standard?

Okay this is tricky. fact that he threathens to destroy the country and at the end attempts the world is more than bad enought. But the fact that he stops before he can do more than straighthen Leaning tower of Pisa can present a problem. But ultimately I think he makes it, village at the beggining of the episode clearly shows the destruction his machine causes and while he stops his destroy the world tantrum before it can do much, fact that he was perfectly ready to go with it when he believes his demands aren’t being met should be enought.

Conclusion?

Assuming there is enought to his deeds [tup].
