Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. 'If a work is already reserved by another user , please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

That's something that kept bugging me for Joker in MK. The standard is way too jacked for me to see him qualify. [tdown] to Joker

[tdown] to the Joker.

What is the work ?

The work is titled "A Shadow Over Freddy's" , it is a Five Nights at Freddy's Fangame and it can be found here : https://gamejolt.com/games/phisnomgames/829381

Who is William Afton and what has he done ?

William Afton is the main antagonist as well as the protagonist of A shadow over freddys.

When William Afton was a child , his dog stole his favourite doll and kept running away when William tried to retrieve it. Eventually , he managed to catch the dog and snap it's neck. Later leaving it to die and retrieving his doll. A little time later , young william saw out of his window the shadow of his dog's soul carrying his favourite toy he followed it and it lead him to the dog's grave. On that grave lay william's toy violantly twitching , possesed by the dog's soul. William fascinated grabed the toy and returned home with a big smile on his face.

Time passed and William's fascination over souls only grew , bjt he never got any results. He dicided to make a test and used his abusive apchoholic dad as that test. Rigging his car to crash and placing a doll underneath his seat. The car did crash and his father did die , but the doll didn't get possesed like the previous one , William showed only frustration at the failure and no regret over the death he caused.

Years later , he would kill a young girl outside of Fredbear's Family Dinner , he experianced nothing but satisfaction at taking her life. Later still , he would kill 4 more children inside freddy fazbear's pizza. Worse yet is that it is heavily implied that all the spirits forever feel the pain of how they died , such as the dog moving it's head funny because of it's snapped neck. Eventually he died in a spring lock failure while hiding from the spirits of his victims , returning back to life by possesing the animatronic , thus achieving his dream of immortality, but not in the way he wanted it. In the end he died in the Fire at Fazbear's fright , where upon death , his soul entered a purgatory where he would get killed over and over again by the souls of all his victims for all eternity.

Heinous standard ?

He sets ths heinous standard in this game. The other antagonists are : 1) the animatdonics , who are like this because of William and 2) His father , who while a terrible human being in his own tight , has not commited crimes nearly as big or bad as William has. This version of William afton is a less evil than the Main version of William , but that doesn't say much. He definatley passes the heinous standard.

Mitigating factors and freudiant excuses ?

Ok , William Afton has 2. One a lot stronger than the other.

The first possible prevention is that William grew up in an abusive household , his father is desribed as anabusive , misserable drunk , who only spoke to william if he wantdd to scream at him. One of the reasons why William chose his father is statsd to be because his father , sith his behaviour drove away everyone that loved him and to William he was already dead. This could explain why he showed evil tendencies even as a child. However , the murder of his father is explicitly stated to not be out of retribution ,but as a means to test out his theory on souls.

The other possible mitigating factor is this big one : the good ending of the game. As i stated previously we play as William Afton. And depending on our actions we can either get the bad ending or we can get the good ending. If you collect all of the plushies and listen to all of the puppet's stories , you will get a sceen similar to the bad ending , but it will have the title good ending , with all of the plushies pressent and the lighting is no longer dark. This is an obvious almost 1 to 1 of the good ending of fnaf 3 , as in both cases the character we play as goes out of their way to release the spirits and give them peace. This could mean that William , since he is the player character, feels remorse for his past acts and wishes to make up for them , or it could mean that he just wishes for the torture to end since the spirits are the one tormenting him so by releasing them , it would end and that regardless of the ending , good or bad , he remains in purgatory. However , given the bright lighting that acompanies the good ending , it seems to rather be framed as what happened being a good thing rather than selfishness.

Final verdict ?

I'll leave it up to you.

No to the Joker and Afton. I don't get why everyone has to act surprised whenever an incarnation of Joker doesn't count. There have been plenty of examples in the past, such as the 60s Batman show, Lego Batman, Justice, New Adventures, The Killing Joke, The Brave and the Bold, Injustice (alternate timeline version), 2019 Joker, Persona 5, and Mass Effect.

[up]Heinousness, there are many other C Ms who are very cringy that still count.

@Amatuer Storytime it's just that 90% of Jokers are pure evil, which makes the ones that aren't stand out.

@Master N This Joker's kind of an amalgamation of hundreds of different Jokers, so players conflate him with all the past Jokers.

I've been considering these three (or one) on and off for some time. My track record after coming back hasn't been great so far, but I figure I can at least give them a shot.

What's the work?

Todd and the Book of Pure Evil is a short-lived TV series (and an animated movie) based on a short film from the same writers/director. To sum it up briefly, it's basically Deathgasm before it was ever conceived. More concisely, it concerns Todd Smith, a high school metalhead who's obsessed with getting in a particular girl's pants, and is told of the Book of Pure Evil, which can give him anything he desires. But the Book has a mind of its own and often makes its readers quickly regret its "help," spreading carnage throughout Crowley Heights High School on a regular basis. To find the Book, Todd joins forces with his best friend Curtis Weaver, his crush Jenny Kolinsky, science nerd Hannah B. Williams, with occasional help from the janitor Jimmy, and the treacherous guidance counselor Atticus Murphy, Jr, who is working to acquire the book for the Satanic Society.

Who are the Metal Dudes? What have they done?

The Metal Dudes, Brody, Eddie, and Rob, are actually an unnamed archdemon who's been around for a long, long while. Although their misdeeds probably span eons, let's focus on what we know they've done. For starters, they raped the young Atticus Murphy, Jr. as a boy, while in the form of a wolf, on behalf of his father, who expected him to fight the wolf, albeit without telling him as such. In the (show's) present day, they let Todd know about the Book of Pure Evil, a book that's said to be bound in the foreskin of Judas.

After obtaining the Book with help from Jimmy, Todd uses it to become a master guitarist, killing a rival guitarist in a guitar duel by playing riffs the rival is unable to keep up with, taking his place in the Battle of the Bands. That night, Todd's performance nearly makes everyone in the school bleed to death, but he's stopped when Curtis and Jenny get hold of the Book and light it on fire... only for it to fly away. Over the next few episodes, the Metal Dudes spend most of their appearances giving Todd some advice that's often dangerous, but still useful, to help get him closer to capturing and destroying the Book, while the Book wreaks havoc across the school. That is, until they reveal their true intentions: they want Todd to become the Pure Evil One and destroy the world, and all their obnoxious but seemingly well-intentioned advice was all done with the intent of corrupting him. Under their supervision, Todd forges a sword in what used to be the shop classroom that was shut down over an incident where Todd and Curtis got stoned before class, ending in Todd unintentionally chopping of Curtis' arm with a table saw. As the flashback ends, Curtis bursts into the room with a demon arm he used the Book to grow, prepared to kill Todd. Todd chops off Curtis' arm (again) while the Metal Dudes cheer for him to finish his best friend off, thus revealing their true colors.

In the second season, with their intentions exposed to Todd, they end up siding with the hopelessly incompetent Atticus Murphy, Jr — who has recently assumed the role of leader of the Satanic Society after killing his father, the former leader — convincing him that he's the true Pure Evil One while still scheming to make Todd. The trend of them badgering Todd and friends continues until they realize that Todd is still a virgin, and deflowering him is the means to make him into the Pure Evil One, so they hatch a new plan. Merging to assume the form of high school dropout Nikki Kane, they seduce Todd at a party. When Todd and Nikki get some one on one time, he makes some effort to get to know her, but she has none of it and just has him strip and then has sex with him, leaving after he climaxes. The series finale (or Series Fauxnale, if you include the movie) sees Todd and Jenny investigating their car while they're away, where they find pictures of them from centuries past. At the prom, Atticus — who has recently transformed himself into a mangoat with help from the Book — uses the Book to break the seal on the door and let the Metal Dudes in. They once again fuse to become Nikki, and ambush Jimmy, beating the crap out of him when he hits her with a mop and breaks their fusion, then come to the prom where Atticus and Todd are fighting to see who the true Pure Evil One is. Todd uses the Book to trap Atticus inside its pages, then, while coming dangerously close to using it to destroy the world to the Metal Dudes' glee, instead banishes it somewhere where he misguidedly believes nobody will ever find it, unintentionally killing Hannah in the process, and splitting up the gang for a time.

The movie, The End of the End, sees one student who had previously been Atticus' protege for the new Satanic Society, manage to find the Book in Timbuktu, which Todd had no idea actually existed. Once more, carnage is unleashed upon the school, while the Metal Dudes, now able to enter the school, come to inform Todd of the rise of the true Pure Evil One, who it turns out was Hannah B. Williams all along. Or rather, Hannah B. is one in a long series of clones created by a pair of scientists who were members of the Satanic Society, synthesizing DNA from the Book to create the true Pure Evil One. Each clone is closer to Pure Evil than the last, and after the death of Hannah D. Williams (which the gang remained oblivious to), Hannah E. emerges and meets the Metal Dudes, who let her know of her destiny.

Hannah E. seduces Todd and abducts him, taking him to the lab where she was created, and he's locked in a machine that she intends to use to sap all the Pure Evil power from him. But then the cavalry arrives, including Jenny, Curtis, Jimmy, and the recently reformed Atticus (who has swapped positions with Jimmy)... as well as the Metal Dudes. Hannah E. is killed, as are almost all subsequent clones, until they reach one of the most bestial of them. Meanwhile, the Metal Dudes assume the form they raped Atticus in, taunting him that he was not supposed to submit, only for Atticus to smack it in the face with his mop. While Todd fights and kills the last monstrous Hannah clone, Jimmy tries to reach Nikki, who eventually takes over and keeps the Metal Dudes sealed away, seemingly for good this time.

Mitigating factors?

The biggest one is the fact that this show is a comedy and the Metal Dudes frequently contribute to the show's humor. For instance, in one episode, they break into a goofy musical number. Also, the aforementioned wolf rape was very much Played for Laughs, numerous times over. However, I would argue that their end goal is played seriously and with no real comedy to speak of. After Todd discovers that he's destined to destroy the world — a discovery which the Metal Dudes have been instrumental in — the show takes a darker shift when he falls into a depression. The show doesn't get WHOLLY bleak, because there's still plenty comedy, but still noticeably darker. Also, take note, when Todd banishes the Book, they seem truly pissed off. Taking another example from a medium featuring Jason Mewes, they're not too far off from Azrael in terms of balancing both comedy and genuine menace.

One other thing is that the "Nikki" persona seems to be her own person who genuinely loved Jimmy and also manages to seal them away. It's... never really explained just how or why she has her own autonomy, but most of the times we see her, it's just the Metal Dudes who are in control. They're also not quite The Dividual, since each of them has a different personality (Brodie being the nigh-Faux Affably Evil de facto leader, Eddie being the Hot-Blooded Jerkass, and Rob being The Quiet One).

Heinous standard?

After the Book is first unleashed upon Crowley High, extreme violence becomes a constant. Students frequently end up killing each other for one reason or another, monsters get loose, which ends up resulting in plenty of gruesome deaths, and so on. Atticus, while certainly incompetent as a villain 99% of the time, also manages to rack up a body count. Most of his victims, however, end up being his father, who was abusive to him for much of his life, and his own minions, who planned to kill him anyway.

I almost considered doing the Book. It has something resembling a personality, being essentially a Jackass Genie in the form of, well, a book, and also communicates to Todd through its servants and in nightmares. The thing of it is, though, is that it seems to be Made of Evil and doesn't really have much choice in being anything else or doing any real good.

The Metal Dudes, on the other hand, can be tied directly to almost everything that's gone wrong in the series and before. Not only do they deceive Todd into getting his hands on the Book and causing almost all the carnage in the series to begin with, but they also had ties to the Satanic Society in its early days when they were truly a threat and not just geezers sitting around in the dark in a nursing home. And of course, there's also the rapes. Yes, plural, because that is essentially how the sex scene with Nikki and Todd plays out. Todd, who has spent most of the series being a scuzzy pervert towards Jenny, displays actual interest in Nikki as a person and clearly feels uncomfortable with how abrupt she is. And that's not even getting into the fact that it's very much Rape by Fraud.

Verdict?

Leaning keep.

  • Land Of Bad: Saseed Hashimi is the ruthless head of the Abu Sayyaf. Working with Russian Arms Dealer Victor Petrov, Hashimi betrays him and slaughters all his staff. Hashimi then forces the mortally wounded Petrov to watch as his wife is decapitated before trying to do the same with his young son. After capturing a trio of American soldiers, Hashimi has one executed before brutally torturing another by knocking out his tooth with a hammer, then waterboarding him.
