Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. 'If a work is already reserved by another user , please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yes to Charles, furnace, snake, the puppet master, and Rita.

  • Season 13 (Master of the Mountain) & Season 15 (Crystalized): The Skull Sorcerer, in truth King Vangelis, and Hazza D'ur are the eponymous tyrants of Shintaro. The king of the Ivory City and an ancient necromancer whose soul was bound to his skull, respectively, the two united when Vangelis sought a way to ensure his prosperity. Together, the two raised an undead army and relentlessly hunted down the Geckles and Munce tribes living beneath the mountain, enslaving them to mine Vengestone for the Overlord. When the two tribes begin to unite against Vangelis, Hazza D'ur resurrects the vicious dragon Grief-Bringer, threatening to slaughter them all unless the Ninja surrender and re-enslaving the tribes even after they accept the offer. Vangelis even rejects his own daughter when she attempts to stop his cruel reign, allowing her to fall down the same pit he implicitly used to kill several of his own soldiers. After Hazza D'ur is destroyed, Vangelis is recruited into the Council of the Crystal King and directly aids the Overlord in ravaging the realm, using the army created from his Vengestone to turn all of Ninjago into crystallized zombies.

And yes, it's Crystalized, not Crystallized. No, I don't know why either.

Just to make sure I'm covering everything before I get to the Overlord's writeup, the only other Ninjago character who might count is Clouse, who almost destroys the world in the Dark Island graphic novel trilogy (the only piece of media outside the show itself I would consider canon, since it gets referenced in their mural of greatest adventures in season 10), but he still mourns the death of his pet giant snake. He'll probably return at some point, but unless that changes he's a no go.

Okay, finally:

Who is Tokuga?

A young mobster and nonbender who has overthrown crime boss Viper as the head of the Triple Threat Triad. Tokuga began to establish himself throughout the mob world as a ruthless up and comer, uniting the crime family under his control and killing those who would not buckle. Seeking to control more of the underworld, he began a mob war with the Creeping Crystal Triad under the Earthbender kingpin Jargala. Tokuga's mercilessness extended quite far and he intended to give no quarter; only to murder the other triads and Jargala herself. After being hired by the corrupt Wonyong Keum to clear the spirit world portal, tokuga ended up attacked by a spirit and disfigured, turned int9\o a sort of human/dragon hybrid.

Attacking Wonyong out of spite for his disfigurement, Tokuga took control of his industry and set up a series of traps and bombs to wipe out Republic City's police force. Tokuga then stole a set of weapons and nerve gas cannisters, intending to conquer Republic city by gassing a huge part of the civilian populace. Attempting to use the gas on civilians and the heroes,Tokuga was defeated but fled into the Spirit World, with Korra remarking he would likely return one day.

Mitigating issues?

He tries to gas a city. He's just one mob boss and non-bender with only special physical powers from the spirit infecting him. IT's also noted he hasn't changed his personality at all. He's angry he's deformed, but that's....really that's it.

He tries to gas a portion of a whole city. Dude's oer the line.

Conclusion?

And a yes. Next up, time for a short horror story villain or two, and then Draculas and Star Wars

  • Octopath Traveler II:
    • Arcanette is the true mastermind of the Moonshade Order, so misanthropic and sadistic that she seeks to revive Vide the Wicked God to purge all that lives. Under Arcanette's banner, countless people are tortured, experimented on, and otherwise slain by the Order, with the Kal clan having been subject to genocide. Arcanette manipulates the sole survivor of the Kal clan, Kaldena, into murdering over a dozen innocent people under the illusion it would avenge her people; in truth, Arcanette just uses her to eliminate her foes before transforming her into an agonized abomination. After tricking Tanzy and others into making themselves sacrifices to Vide, Arcanette reveals herself to the party and tries to murder them all, mocking them the whole time about the world's coming destruction and each member's individual trauma.
    • Throné's path:
      • Claude is the true creator of the Blacksnakes, who seeks to create a worthy heir to his legacy so that he can finally end his immortal life. The progenitor of "countless children by countless women"—many of which were not remotely consensual—Claude uses the Blacksnakes to transform his many children into unfeeling, killing machines who turn on and murder one another, Claude hoping to whittle down his progeny until only the strongest remain to succeed him. Claude has murdered several of his children with his bare hands when they failed to meet his expectations, and even killed the baby shared by Father and Marietta to take Marietta for himself. Claude is also revealed to have been behind the corruption of Trousseau into an insane mass murderer by showing him the Book of Night and driving him mad with despair. Caring for nothing but satisfying his own ego, Claude has run a campaign of abuse and murder of children for decades, and is willing to sacrifice hundreds of lives to see his legacy secured.
      • "Mother" is the current head of the Blacksnakes, who gained her position by manipulating Father into murdering the previous leader, Throné's true mother. Believing in pain as the ultimate method of control, Mother uses her "Garden" to gather dozens of orphan children at a time and subject them to brutal training that corrupts those who survive into assassins and thieves wholly loyal to her. Mother regularly finds any reason to viciously torture the children under her purview with a whip, taking a sadistic glee in physically and psychologically tearing them down until they are nothing but her broken slaves, and encourages them to murder one another to gain her favor. When confronted by Throné, Mother mocks the girl over her mother's death, and proclaims her hatred of all children who aren't her personal puppets with her dying breaths.

[tup] to Brother Charles, Furnace, Mage Snake, Puppet Master, Rita Repulsa and Tokuga.

Okay taking a quick break from Waking the Dead, I’ve got a short and simple one for us. Now as I'm sure some people will remember Coroner is a Canadian crime drama, staring Serinda Swan as Doctor Jenny Cooper and Roger Cross as detective Donovan McAvoy. Season 4’s “Safe Space” involves them investigating a body found mostly submerged in concrete within the disused elevator an apartment building that is home to all manner of eccentric individuals.

Interestingly our candidate is for once not the killer, but our victim, thus I give you Evan Bosch.

Who Is he:

A successful dance coordinator for the Toronto Ballet Consortium, Evan is well regarded for training numerous successful dancers, and producing his set pieces, training potential dancers up from the age of fourteen into adulthood.

However, behind closed doors Evan is in fact a ruthless Control Freak who subjects his students to horrifically unrealistic standards (such as weighing them every single day) and brutal training regimes, with him only caring about moulding them into being the embodiments of his set pieces.

Even worse than that, Evan is also a sexual predator who regularly took advantage of the girls naivety and youth to rape them multiple times when they were alone with him. Having already groomed them to the extent they were used to him being absolute control of their bodies, many of them simply didn’t realise the extent of his violations until years later.

Two weeks before the events of the episode Evan found himself in trouble when his latest victim instead decided to go the police. Thus he went to visit two of his former victims Kana and Cori, believing he could force them into providing him a false alibi. Instead the two of them took him prisoner and locked him a sealed room they had accidently found in the building, figuring they could scare him into confessing on camera and thus put an end to all of this.

Unfortunately for them Evan figured out their plan and refused to play ball, even mocking them both about what he put them through. Even when Kana turned off the camera’s and spent hours trying to get him to admit it just to give her some closure, Evan still spat it back in her face for failing him.

Not knowing what to do, events got even worse for them when due to an unknown health condition Evan ended up suddenly dying.

The episode ends with the news of his death exposing the stories of his abuse, which in turn leads numerous other former students coming forward with their own stories of rape and abuse at his hand.

Any Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Traits:

Nothing really, from the little we see of Evan he comes across as an arrogant, manipulative predator who dismisses his horrible crimes as “keeping up with the standards” and his victims own faults.

Even when he points out that anything he admits on camera won’t stand up due to the obvious coercion, he still refuses to give them anything and even draws a cruel satisfaction out of it despite his horrific imprisonment.

To be fair Evan only very briefly appears alive, but we get enough incite into his personality between his actions and his former victims relating their experiences.

Heinous Standard:

Not an issue. Overall rape isn’t a crime that comes up much within this series (to my recollection their is only one other example that was offscreen as backstory), let alone serial rape.

Now being fair we never get any idea of how many victims he exactly has, but we know there were at least three victims, and the ending heavily implies it’s a lot (to the point its acknowledged that there is a good chance the prosecution won’t even charge Kana and Cori for kidnapping).

Conclusion:

Nothing really more to say, Evan Bosch is just nasty but straight forward predator.

Still what do you think?

[tup] Tokuga and Evans

This one will be a short one from a youtube Short Film.

Warning : Big Spoiler at the end.

What is the work ?

5 Minute Dating is a youtube Short Horror Film made by Deformed Lunchbox. The film is about a speed dating event.

Who is Slash ?

Slash is the protagonist of this short horror movie and a participant of the speed dating event. First appearing as a gentleman who is unfortunatly physically deformed. Because of that, almost all women he came through are disgusted when they see him with even somes being jerkish and insulting, making it difficult for him to find someone who could love him.

That was until he met a girl suffering from the same problems as him. The woman in question is herself insecure and finds herself ugly, however Slash reassures her that he finds her beautiful and proposes her to have dinner with him, which she accepts.

Later in Slash's home, he is seen eating meat, alone, without Sarah at his side, he then put a card (possessed by the event participants) on a wall with Sarah's name.

Yeah we're here, Slash is in fact a cannibal who lured Sarah to his home and ate her.

Mitiging factors ?

None, the film makes the viewer feels sympathy for him for most time but soon lost all of it once he's discovered to be a cannibal. He has no moral agency issue as he manipulated Sarah to have dinner with him. And it is not a case where him eating human is an urge and where he has no control about. At the end after eating Sarah, he just look his watch with a smile while licking his lips.

Heinous Standards ?

He is the only villain in the film but does he pass ? We see him eat one person which could make us think he doesn't pass the baseline, but here's the thing : I mentionned that he put Sarah's card on a wall. Well this wall has seven cards hagged there (including Sarah's card). And yet there is an 8th thread card shown onscreen, indicating that he has a 8th card. Which means he actually has 7 or 8 victims, so i think he can pass.

Conclusion ?

Most of the time, we expect manipulators like that to use their charms to manipulate people, Slash was instead the opposate due to his deformation, making us viewers to feel sympathy for him while hating all the girls who treated him bad. But the reveals at the end is truly shocking (surely one of the most shocking twists i saw). That and the fact that Sarah was a girl with similar problems as him and was happy to find someone who could love her but was betrayed and killed at the end. For that, i think he can qualify.

Supporting the opinion of ~Trocyte V regarding barring The Witness and Calus as potential CMs in light of Destiny 2: Lightfall. The Witness's moral compass is far too alien and is of dubious agency as it stands now; and besides, we won't see the full extent of The Witness's motives until the next and final expansion, The Final Shape (coming in 2024).

Calus also fails my check (personal opinion of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character notwithstanding) because while Ambition Is Evil is a thing and his conversion into a Disciple of The Witness heavily leans into unsatiable greed, much of the lore prior to Lightfall puts a shade of gray on his conversion as he's conflicted over it.

Nezarec, on the other hand, will be an easy keep when we get to discuss him.
