Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. 'If a work is already reserved by another user , please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Here's a writeup for Jhudora:

  • Complete Monster: In Storytelling Competition #127, Jhudora the Dark Faerie sends the Eyrie Jurgis to a Bad Future where she rules as queen over Neopets too scared and broken to fight her, having used a spell to corrupt her fellow Faeries into attacking Neopia. When the Eyries led an army of winged pets to stop her, Jhudora cast a spell to destroy all wings except her own, making all the winged pet species and other Faeries go extinct. When Jurgis and his Wocky friend Larea go back in time to stop Jhudora, she threatens and hurts other Neopets to get the item she needs to complete the spell and plans to kill Jurgis first with it. Pathetically begging for mercy as her spell is reversed to lock her away, Jhudora herself knows no compassion or mercy at all.

Eh still sticking with a [tdown] for Mulgarath. Fair enough people say he'd kill people but my issue is, apart from killing Hogsqueal's family (which was offscreen and doesn't really have an impact story wise emotionally IIRC.) Mulgarath does jack shit apart from attacking the heroes. Even the goblins are much more visceral with them Redcap yelling "Tear them apart!" and them inflicting wounds on the young heroes, and a child in a flashback iirc which traumatised her. For a PG movie, the film doesn't shy away from things that could easily give Mulgarath that oomph IMO.

I also don't see it either considering he also has such a shockingly minimal rapsheet. Like his rapsheet amounting to a threat he never even gets close to enacting when he does jackshit other wise isn't enough for me.

[up][up]Red cap and the goblins all work for and are totally subservient to Mulgarath. Their evil actions are an extension of his. They’re always acting on his orders.

Also, Hogsqueal aside from being afraid of and hating Mulgarath is the one who kills him. That's story impact right there.

IIRC Mulgarath may be in charge on Redcap and the goblins but it's not Redcap is a mindless flunky, he does things of his own volition such as siccing the troll.

Fair enough about the Hogsqueal thing but doens't the goblin attack in the flashback on a child, which Mulgarath had no visible appearance in, literally traumatise her into putting the anti goblin methods in her care home even as an old lady? All Mulgarath says to Redcap that's notable is this:

"Then find the Jared, get the book and kill them. Kill them all!"

Which... is an action that Redcap doesn't really need much egging on since him and the goblins are rabid when attacking people.

Okay now feels like a good time for our next Waking the Dead Candidate. As we transitioning into the second half our proposals, we move away from the large scale high resource mass murders into the shows bread and butter, the street level antagonists who either standout for their tier or occupy a particular niche. This its important to keep this in mind going forwards.

So without further ado for the candidate that I’ve been looking forward to the most, my personal favourite villain within the entire show. Probably the smartest antagonist of them all (in a show that really has no shortage of brilliant and cunning opponents), the shows only recuring villain and the one who arguably has the best claim to being Peter Boyd’s Arch-Enemy.

I give you Linda Cummings. Apologies its a bit of a long one.

Who is she:

On the surface Linda seems a tough but fair, model guard at Horton maximum security Prison, specifically in the sex offender’s wing.

In reality, Linda is a Serial Killer with a genius level intellect, driven by an obsession with control and a love of complex games, being the most terrifying thing within Horton.

What does she do:

Several years before her first appearance, Linda met up with the overly compassionate Penny Cain who helped homeless drug addicts. Seeing an opportunity Linda managed manipulated the fanatical Penny into euthanizing them, convincing her that she was putting them out of their misery.

One evening in 2001, the governor of Horton prison James Reading was bludgeoned around the head by his much abused daughter Cathy. Convinced she’d killed him, the terrified Cathy called Linda (who used to babysit her) for help. Arriving Linda discovered Reading was only stunned, but already planning to dispose of him, she finished him off by viciously bludgeoning him with his own trophy, then carefully removing his head using a carving knife and a meat cleaver from the kitchen, letting Cathy believe she killed her own father.

She then took his head wrapped in a bin liner and dumped it in a nearby river, along with several trophies so it would sink to the bottom. With a new governor in her pocket in charge, Linda would kill six of her former prisoners, using another former inmate called Terry Ryan (who now worked as a forest ranger and was terrified of her, dubbing her “The Beast”) to dispose of the bodies beneath a meadow in a clearing in the forest.

First appearing in season 7’s “Sins” following the investigation into Reading’s death being reopened due to his head being discovered, Linda knowing she needed someone to pin the blame upon, turned her attention to the prison's arrogant psychiatrist Doctor Hooper, who had since began an inappropriate relationship with Cathy.

Knowing that the sadistic dying psychopath Michael Kelleher had a twisted obsession with Hooper, Linda recruited him promising him he could have what he wanted as long as he obeyed her or else she’d simply have Pike kill him. That accomplished, Linda smuggles him a razor blade right before Kelleher was taken to hospital for his ongoing treatment, allowing Kelleher to break free and seemingly abduct Linda.

Going out to meet up with Terry who took them to where he buried the bodies and having him dig another grave, Linda bludgeoned Terry around the head with a shovel, and slit his throat to add him to her collection. Then she had Kelleher kidnap Hooper, whilst she staged her own imprisonment in Ryan’s cabin, sending a message seemingly from Kelleher to lure out the police. The police quickly find the bodies as she planned so as to frame Hooper for all her victims.

Kelleher then tortures and rapes Hooper for hours to get him to confess, and finishes him by burying him up to his neck in sand and allowing him to drown when the tide came in, with Linda allowing all of it.

Back at the Prison, Linda slips a manuscript titled “Bad Machines”, into Dr. Hooper's files to frame Hooper as a vigilante killer who had been executing his former patients and Reading.

However, noticing the discrepancies, Boyd was able to expose Linda. Only able to charge her with helping Kelleher escape, playing on her vanity, Boyd managed to persuade her to confess to everything, so the world would know how brilliant she really was.

Unbeknownst to him at the time, Linda didn’t mind her defeat, as she had finally found an opponent worthy of her attention in Peter Boyd, as had been the whole point of her killing spree. She also, in her own words, “Recognizes a killer when she sees one” and decides to put Boyd to the test at a later date.

Linda returns in season 8’s “End Game”, having since been institutionalized in Padworth Secure Psychiatric Hospital, where Penny Cain works as a charge nurse. Carefully setting up events, Linda has Penny send Boyd a letter with the severed finger of vanished former patient Sandra White (who she knew had been killed along with Doctor McCarthy by David O’Neal, an unstable patient).

Moving everything into place, Linda seduces the vulnerable fellow patient Ellen, even having Penny let them sleep together to convince Ellen Linda loved her. Finally ready, Linda put her plan into action by priming Ellen to stab another patient to death with a fountain pen.

Then, using the confusion, she got to work sabotaging the security system to escape the ward, and lock everyone in. Breaking into the security room and disabling the guard with a hammer, she manages to trap the head of the unit, Doctor Mohammad, in the Gym and incites David into gutting him with a broken bottle purely for laughs (having already told Doctor Mohammad he would die the day before just to make him squirm).

Managing to escape despite Boyd cutting her fun early, Linda quickly tracks down Penny (who was right in the middle of killing her thirteenth victim) and abducted both her and Grace Foley.

Contacting Boyd, she lured him out in a simple game with Grace’s life in the balance, bringing him to the same abandoned warehouse he last saw his son Luke alive, where she had Penny tied up, telling Boyd either he killed Penny or she would kill Grace by flooding her body with chemo drugs, likening the death to being burned alive with acid. Then as a final twist, she reveals it was Penny (with her direction) who had murdered Luke.

But despite it all Boyd couldn’t do it. Linda thus tries to kill Grace, however, overhearing her through the vents Boyd realizes she was also in the same building and managed to get there in time. Chasing Linda to the roof, Linda decides to force Boyd to kill her instead and jumps off the edge, Boyd manages to catch her but is unable to pull her up, with Linda constantly encouraging him to let her go.

Linda fell to her death, with the ending leaving it ambiguous if she simply slips or if Boyd really did drop her.

Any Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Traits:

Surprisingly nothing. On paper quite a number of her activities sound like they should be proof of a hidden better side, only for Linda to subvert them all.

She doesn’t prey on sexual predators or moral reasons, but simply because so few people care about their well-being that she can kill them with nobody even noticing they disappeared.

Likewise whilst she ensures Cathy is in the clear (initially) for her father’s murder, this isn’t out of care for her, but simply to make it easier for her to dispose of him. It's spelled out by Boyd that Linda flat out doesn’t care about anyone else, viewing them all as just pawns on her board. The only exception is Boyd himself, and even then she doesn’t really care about him as anything more than an opponent worthy of her skills.

It's mentioned Linda’s father abandoned her when she was five, her mother died at eleven and she grew up in multiple foster homes, but otherwise none of its presented sympathetically. Linda flat out admits that despite seeing her mother “twisting in hell for days” whilst dying of cancer, she still withheld her morphine.

Now Linda does admittedly follow the rules of her own games. But that’s mostly cause there is no fun for her without the challenge and their all rigged in her favour anyway.

Heinous Standard:

Okay, now I can understand how after all our mass murderers with hundreds if not thousands of victims to their name, Linda might seem a bit insignificant with eleven victims (plus thirteen more from Penny’s murders). However, as I said at the start its important to take tiers and resources into account.

Linda isn’t a crime boss, or a warlord, or a powerful industrialist. She’s simply a really, REALLY cruel serial killer, and whilst she’s a genius, she overall doesn’t have to many resources at her disposal. But for her tier she’s punching well beyond her weight. The series does feature a handful of other serial killers, but all but one of them are well bellow her in terms of victims.

Likewise when taking into account all her other crimes she easily surpasses the competition. The only one to surpass her on her tier is Martin Barlow, and he's got vastly more resources at his disposal considering his spree was enabled by a crime lord.

Conclusion:

All in all I think Linda is an easy keeper, an outstanding and utterly terrifying performance from Ruth Gemmel (yep Lady Bridgerton herself).

Still what do you think.

Even giving her 24, I'm hesitant. I only skimmed the EP (it's lengthy), but is there anything unique about her murders that makes her stand out?

Like, with Lucifer Leary, while he has fewer resources and isn't as wide-ranging as the others, his eating-his-victims'-limbs-in-front-of-them niche is unique.

MGD107 Since: Feb, 2015
#6873: Mar 5th 2023 at 3:09:09 PM

Well aside from the fact she's the most brilliant killer in the show, Linda doesn't exactly have any unique niche's save from the fact she's one of only two proxy killers. What she does have is that's punching well above her weight for simply a serial killer.

All her murders are pretty vicious, she has bodycount that surpassing everyone but Martin Barlow, who is a special case, and she's also responsible for a really brutal torture session.

Also sorry its lengthy, we tried to cut it down. Fact of the matter is being only recurring antagonist, she gets up to a lot.
