Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Don't delete an EP unless you intend to swiftly repost it. We know that there are reasons why you might want to delete an EP, especially if it's being downvoted - rejection is hard, even in a low-stakes environment like this. However, deleting it renders the current discussion null and void, makes it impossible to reference the discussion in the future and can confuse tropers who didn't read it before the deletion. If the issue is temporary (such as formatting problems or a post getting overlooked as the thread moves on), then deleting and quickly reposting the EP is a valid option, but to fully retract an EP, please use the [[strike:]] markup instead.

  4. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  5. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  6. 'If a work is already reserved by another user , please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  7. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  8. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  9. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  10. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yes to the Beast, abstaining on Dream but likewise emphasizing that you've carried the discussion very well Splonk and I always appreciate your contributions!

  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Officer Frank Tenpenny is the crooked, self-righteous head of C.R.A.S.H., using the unit as his own personal gang in a quest to control all of San Andreas. For years, Tenpenny abuses his authority to exploit the gangs of Los Santos for his own profit while turning them against each other and orchestrating bloody gang wars. Tenpenny eventually throws in exclusively with the ruthless Ballas, supplying them with dangerous crack cocaine to flood the streets with and turn countless civilians and crooks alike into suffering addicts. To secure Balla rule, Tenpenny ensures the systematic slaughter of smaller gangs, such as Grove Street, and in a haphazard attempt on the life of Grove Street's leader Sweet, Tenpenny has a drive-by carried out that kills Sweet's elderly mother. To keep his crimes hidden, Tenpenny regularly murders fellow officers of the law as well as other whistleblowers, either with his own hands or by forcing those like CJ to do his dirty work, threatening the latter with having his brother raped and killed if he refuses. Tenpenny is also responsible for the corruption of Big Smoke, making him become the face of the drug empire Tenpenny has constructed, planning all the while to eliminate him. Tenpenny's villainy is so rampant that Los Santos begins tearing itself apart in an outraged riot over his unchecked evil, at which point Tenpenny tries to eliminate loose ends, leave his allies to die in a fire, and flee the state to save his own skin. Tenpenny's ambition nearly destroys San Andreas, and to the very end he sneers that those against him were nothing but "trash" to be taken out.

I think that entry is a bit too long

Don't get me wrong, Tempenny is one of those guys whose rapsheet is so massive that deserves a entry larger than average (a very active Big Bad of a 30 hours game), but 270 words? A bit much

The entry’s just fine, Kaz. Tenpenny’s a very active character, so his entry’s going to be beefy. Besides, it’s less than 300 words.

Likewise fine with Tenpenny

Let's finish up 007 Legends

Who is Drax and what does he do?

Hugo Drax is a wealthy businessman being investigated in the Moonraker section for potentially stealing secrets about rockets for his Space Tourism business. Bond is sent in to meet with Dr. Holly Goodhead, a CIA Agent investigating Drax and discovers that he’s actually been stealing secrets about biological weapons and has developed a deadly nerve agent. As it turns out, Drax is using his business as a front for his plan to release the nerve agent onto the Earth and wipe out humanity while he and a group of physically perfect people (who may be clones) ride out the disaster in his Moonraker space station waiting to repopulate the Earth. Drax captures the pair and locks them in the blast chamber below one of his rockets so they’ll be incinerated when it takes off. The two escape and sneak into a rocket and onto the space station. They’re captured again but escape with the help of Drax’s henchman Jaws, who turns on Drax when Bond points out that he doesn’t fit into Drax’s ideal world and will be killed. Eventually Bond stops the nerve agent from being launched and shoots Drax out an airlock.

Mitigating Factors?

None just like the film. He believes that natural selection is false and that everyone who isn’t part of his perfect world is a “pestilence” that needs to be eradicated.

Conclusion?

Easy yes.

[up][up] I largely agree about Sea of Stars. There don't seem to be any genuine candidates for Complete Monster. Definite rule-outs include the Dwellers and Brugaves, as well as the Acolytes. The Dwellers never say anything and seem to be more like beasts. Considering each sprouts from a "Seed of Evil", one could make the argument they're Made of Evil. Brugaves seems to genuinely care about Valere and Zale. The Acolytes are willing to suffer through tremendous pain (via the Vampire Rose) in order to live forever to keep serving the Fleshmancer.

Maybe a case could be made for Aephorul, Erlina, or Stormcaller. I won't cover Stormcaller as I think the previous post covers it well.

For Aephorul, Resh'an did seem to misjudge when he became evil; turns out he was evil much earlier than thought. According to his TV Tropes entry, he hates living forever, but I'm not sure where in the game he actually states that. So his motivation is somewhat unclear to me. Still, that he wants to create World Eaters suggests to me that he wants to destroy the world hoping that in the process he destroys himself. Seems more like a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds to me, which wouldn't really fit with this topic's trope.

For Erlina, she expresses concern for Brugaves's safety, but who knows how sincere that is as time goes on. She's largely the one in the driver's seat for the two's betrayal of the Solstice Warriors, dragging Brugaves along. She does not express any concern for Valere and Zale on her own, and only considers it when Brugaves (who she needs for the betrayal) brings it up. After the Fleshmancer sends Brugaves off with the Dweller of Strife and the four Acolytes, she no longer expresses any concern for him and simply demands that the Fleshmancer give her more power. So the question becomes how much her concern for Brugaves is genuine; other than, it seems she's largely focused on looking out for herself and in the process nearly doomed the world.

Argument for Erlina genuinely caring about Brugaves is how she's been expressing it since they were little. She brings Brugaves along and lets him in on her plans. Argument against would be that she needed Brugaves to help create the Blood Moon (to fulfill their agreement with the Acolytes), her lack of concern at being separated from Brugaves when Aephorul sends them in different directions, and her saying everything she did was for Brugaves when after he leaves her forever she demands power, which could have been what she was really angling for.

So all in all the candidates for CM in Sea of Stars aren't looking too great.

And hey, on the subject of dirty cops, here's a quickie duo of 'em:

What's the work?

Black And Blue is a 2019 crime thriller, following rookie cop Alicia West as she accidentally witnesses a nasty bout of police brutality-cum-execution, captures it on her body cam, and is sent on the run as she is hunted by her own co-workers.

Who are Malone and Smitty? What have they done?

  • Terry Malone and his subordinate Smitty are the two primary antagonists of the film, a pair of narcs who run a massive ring of cop corruption. For years they have committed extortion, fabricated evidence, and covered up brutality committed in the force, all while having an arrangement with drug dealers to kick back profits to them in exchange for letting the dealers do their thing.
  • When the corruption scandal falls under political light, Malone and Smitty decide to tie up loose ends. They lure 3 young, unarmed drug dealers to another "meet", only to ambush and execute them as they beg for their lives. Knowing that one of their victims, Zero, is the beloved nephew of crime boss Darius, Malone and Smitty plan to frame a rival gang for the slaying to kick up further gang wars and wipe out more criminals who they have connections to.
  • Things unravel when rookie cop West accidentally stumbles onto the scene looking for her C.O. Browne, another partner to Malone. Smitty immediately opens fire on West to kill her, and Malone orders she be hunted down, murdered and her body cam retrieved. To further their goals, they trick Darius into believing West killed his nephew, siccing the gang on her in hopes she'll be found and horribly killed by the vengeful mobster.
  • As they hunt West, Malone grows increasingly paranoid and pissy at his own officers, threatening two of his cohorts with guns to their heads and death for failure. When Malone realizes West has brought the body cam footage to Darius, he leads a tactical squad to slaughter Darius and his entire gang to cover up the truth they've learned. A spiteful Smitty uses the confusion to murder Browne out of petty dickishness for an earlier insult Browne leveled at him.
  • When West tries to explain her situation to a fellow cop, Smitty guns the man down and tries to kill West too, only for her to get the drop on him and shoot him dead. Malone corners West and nearly kills her, but her friend manages to upload the body cam footage and expose Malone's corruption. Malone uses a last-ditch effort to have West shot dead by claiming she has a gun, but he's taken down and West survives.

Mitigating features?

None for Smitty, he's a trigger-happy Ax-Crazy Rabid Cop barely kept in check by Malone. Malone is a bit more pragmatic in his approach to things, and he claims to West that "good men" like himself "deserve" money that "scum" like drug dealers make on the street, but he's ultimately just a self-righteous prick who likes cash and is completely willing to threaten fellow officers and innocents with death if it serves his goals, so nothing really holds up for him.

Malone does pause for a moment and stoop down to check for signs of life when he sees Smitty's dead body, but there's no tears or even particularly notable discomfort, just a blank stare of stoicism—and considering earlier he screamed at and threatened Smitty with death, it's more of a "welp fuck, there goes another of my trusted soldiers" than any kind of Even Evil Has Loved Ones moment. He's immediately trading barbs with West after this with no mention of her murder of Smitty.

Heinousness?

Malone as the Big Bad runs a crooked gang of cops in committing a litany of crimes, and he opens the film brutally executing 3 unarmed drug dealers so young that they are repeatedly referred to as "kids", to initiate a gang war. He later slaughters Darius's unsuspecting crew to silence what they know, threatens his own men with death, and tries to murder West.

Smitty as The Dragon backs his boss in everything above and personally, eagerly participates in it all, while also having the extra nasty Kick the Dog moments of killing Browne out of spite and gunning down a random cop just for trying to hear out West's story.

What is the work?

LittleRed Memories is a rpg horror game by litteredmemories that has a women named Bonnie who while remembering bad memory is transported to a place called the parallel and is met by a women named Carnation who tells her that she might be able escape by collecting 4 memory shards.

Who is the Parallel/the world and what do they do?

The Parallel is a entity that feeds off the misery of those experiencing their worst memories by dragging them into them self and forcing them to go through deadly puzzles trapping both the dead and alive as well as painfully warping those who stay there long enough.

Before the events of the story Carnation went by the name Maia who is Hunter's aunt and with someone named Doe they tried to explore the Parallel until the Parallel had them play a game of sacrifice where it started from personal possessions to ending with one of them having to give up their life and Doe feeling that she is at fault doing so.

In the present day Bonnie remembering her past is taken to the Parallel where her grandmother now turned into the wolf spider tries to kill her until Carnation saves her.

Putting Bonnie through deadly games where if she fails she dies, they her through her worst memories to feed from her misery including one where it has her own life as a puzzle that frames her as the reason her family is the way it is.

When she gets all the shards she needs to go into the door to exit and gets over her issues the Parallel lets her and hunter go due to them no longer tasting good no to no longer giving them the despair they want.

Redeeming qualities?

While there is a note written by someone that says that the Parallel seemingly let a man go after being satisfied by putting 4 when Bonnie tries the same thing she and Hunter are only let go due to the Parallel no longer having the taste for them.

While the Parallel does feed on despair they also go beyond that by subjecting those who enter to cruel games just to humor themselves and painfully having those in them brutal mutate into the forms they have now.

While they do let people who win their games go it is after they have either were forced to throw something away, went through a bad memory, and ultimately they are still kept in the parallel to suffer.

Heinous standard?

There is Hunter who in one of the endings kills everyone in the Parallel in one of bad endings in a twisted attempt to protect Bonnie, and Bonnie's grandmother who abused her years by beating her, leaving her outside to starve, emotionally abusing her, and trying to kill her and tries to kill her multiple times after becoming the wolf spider because she blames her for destroying the family by being born.

The Parallel is even worse by not only killing others in the parallel before the game began but subjecting to life and death games while trying to make them relive their worst memories and slowly having their heads mutilated into what they are now with the place being even worse before Carnation came to try to make the place the most pleasant it they could make it.

Verdict?

You decide

[tup]The Parallel seems like a keep.

So, I've seen The Walking Dead's CM page was missing an image. One from William Carver could help. I wonder if you'll like any of them. Sorry for the repeated caption text, but it can be rather tough to find a good quote from a delusional villain like him. And I found Jane's quote to be a rather apt description for the kind of monster he is. Probably can be shortened, though.
