Not to shill Live A Live on main again but the English voice acting for the remake is some of the absolute best I've heard in recent years. Every character is perfectly cast, from the main heroes to the side characters, the voice direction is spot on, the lines delivered brilliantly, just aahhh it's so good! I know Reagan Murdock a.k.a Sundown is in the Chainsaw Man anime but I really hope to see the rest of the cast in more stuff too, especially my man David Cui Cui who did a fantastic job as my boi Akira <3

Recently I was fixated on Metalocalypse dubs. I know it has been dubbed into Spanish, German, and Russian. I'm not sure if it has any more, but I do know it doesn't have a Japanese dub, because I was kinda hoping for it to have one.

None of the dubs seem to keep the same feel as the original English though. Like here's a short clip from the Russian dub just to get an idea of the characters' voices. I do have a fondness for the Russian dub though because I have a liking towards the sound of the Russian language, but I just feel like none of the foreign language dubs of Metalocalypse feel quite the same in terms of the speech quirks.

It's the same kind of feeling the Osomatsu-san English dub gives me. There's just some sort of off putting feel compared to the original voices. Something is just kind of off.

I do however have a huge love for the Spanish dubs of Osomatsu-kun and Tensai Bakabon, called Cosas de Locos. Something about the voices in those dubs hit just right for me. It helps that the theme songs are dubbed too which I think is awesome!

I grew up with a lot of French-language Belgian dubs. Sometimes, I didn't know they were even Belgian for several years: an example is the CGI Inspector Gadget Movie. I think that Pokemon is the most famous work to ever have a French-language Belgian dub.

But Pokemon is only the tip of the French-language Belgian dub iceberg. Belgium doesn't even only do kids' shows, even though a lot of them are. For example, another famous French-language Belgian dub is Alarm for Cobra, whose dub even began before Pokemon's, as it precedes the latter by 2 years. Even Aurelien Ringelheim, whose most famous role is Ash Ketchum, voiced in Alarm for Cobra before even voicing in Pokemon.

The main Pokemon anime, outside of Movies 4, 6 and 7, always had the same dub (even though both Movies 1 and 2 were actually dubbed in France, the main Voice Actors went to Paris so we had a vocal continuity). The only Voice Actors who were already here from the beginning are Aurelien Ringelheim (who was in his late teens when he first voiced Ash), Jean-Marc Delhausse (additional VA who's also ADR Director since dp057), Catherine Conet (Jessie) and David Manet (James). About Delhausse and Manet, they were temporarily replaced in some episodes (even though Delhausse still voiced Prof. Oak), and the peculiarity about Manet's replacements are that it was only in a precise half-scene (Olivier Cuvellier in ep156, who also replaced Nessym Guetat as Meowth in the same half-scene) or even line (Arnaud Leonard in ep234).

Despite being very well-known Voice Actors thanks to Pokemon, only knowing them from those roles may result in underestimating them (except Delhausse thanks to being an additional VA). Especially Ringelheim whose Ash role became a meme. He happens to have voiced a lot of children and teenagers (especially in the 2000s and early 2010s), and since the early 2010s, he has proven he was way more than Ash Ketchum as he happens to be able to change his voice very well. For example, he can voice adults, and his Fisher Biskit voice is very, very different from his Ash voice. I happen to like this kind of voice a lot, so since I've heard it, I'm looking for works in which he is present, especially recent ones. Also, despite both TMNT 2012 and Rise of the TMNT being dubbed in France, he happens to have voiced both versions of Donnie (the main male cast was the same for both series), as he also dubbed in Paris, escpecially in the 2000s. Both Donnies are not voiced the same at all: while 2012's is more or less faithful to Rob Paulsen's take, Rise's sounds nothing like Josh Brenner's take at all. While Brenner's voice is monotone, Ringelheim's one brings a lot of life - and sometimes too much - to Donnie. "Too much" shouldn't be read as negative at all, technically I want to be neutral when comparing both voices. I discovered not long after the Movie's availability that Rise's Donnie was written as being on the spectrum. Some people on it have a problem with controlling their emotions/voice tone and I do. Now, I don't know if the French cast and crew saw him as being coded as such (or even knew he actually was), but I just find it strange they decided to go by that route if it's just a coincidence. If you want to know how French Rise Donnie sounds like, here's an example.

It should be noted that, outside of Pokemon, Catherine Conet isn't that well-known, her most notable role remaining Jessie. As for David Manet, that's another story. Thanks to Yu-Gi-Oh being aired and known around the same time as Pokemon, in which he voiced Tristan, Manet quickly became famous. The problem is, both James and Tristan are jokes due to their personalities (James is seen as a wimp while Tristan is seen as an idiot). Even though he also voiced Metabee, [[Video Game/Medabots Medabots]] is mostly unavailable to watch nowadays, so people aren't very much aware that it was also him. I think that the role that made him regarded as being a GOAT-tier Voice Actor is The Doctor. Originally, people have been reticent about his presence on the Ninth Doctor back in 2005. Due to Eccleston only staying for Series 1, he was expected to leave. But then he more or less said something about the fact that "maybe he changed faces, but he can still sound the same". While originally a joke, David Macaluso, the ADR Director, asked the distributors if they could keep Manet as the Tenth Doctor. The negociations took a long time, so the then-new Doctor was originally voiced by Frederik Haugness (even though Manet also recorded Ten's first lines, they kept the other one's pitch). They agreed on a Role Reprisal by then, so Manet became the Tenth Doctor as from The Christmas Invasion. Even though several fans disagreed on the fact that someone who already interpreted the Doctor in the past is back as a brand new incarnation (sounds familiar, uh?), his take on this new Doctor quickly grew on people so much that, by the late 2000s, he was already regarded as being GOAT-Tier. And I'm sure that some of his subsequent roles were Meta. For example, I don't think his presence as Zanark Avalonic (a character who appeared during a Season about time travel) is a pure coincidence (furthermore, he also happened to having already been present on main cast member Ryouma Nishiki, so he talked to himself on some occasions).

Due to French-language Belgian dubs being not many in the comparison to other French-language ones, they tend to be underestimated, if not outwart ignored. Some French Voice Actors even say that their Belgian colleagues don't have enough talent, even though they're wrong. They are as talented as them.

Lately I've been tracking down casts in Spanish, French, and Portuguese. [For other languages, I only add a role or two to each voice actor's TV Tropes page.]

Another perfect landing.

Gonna ask this thread for a bit of help: I disambiguated Anime.Fullmetal Alchemist some time ago in order to give the first anime its own space at Anime.Fullmetal Alchemist 2003. While I've seen both versions and can usually tell where a wick is supposed to go, the pile of Role Association subpages (wicks are here) is a little intimidating. If anyone has seen the work in these languages with that part and can help out, that'd be great smile

Swede here, and one thing that gets my goat is how lazy a ton of Swedish voice acting is.

The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dub was... fine, I guess, if nothing else because at least one of the voice actors at least tried to actually voice-act. But more often than not, it's just some well-known actor/celebrity who just uses their own voice ad nauseum. It's so disappointing!

You know, it amazes me, sometimes, the diverse roles people play. For example, take the aforementioned Luci Christian and Kira Vincent-Davis. An example of their work together:

Azumanga Daioh: Luci = Yukari Tanazaki, Jerk with a Heart of Gold, somehow an Apathetic Teacher and Sadist Teacher at the same time. Kira = "Osaka", Literally The Idiot from Osaka

Squid Girl: Luci = Chizuru, Badass Normal, Beware the Nice Ones Cool Big Sis Kira = Eiko, Fiery Redhead Deadpan Snarker

Chihayafuru: Luci= Chihaya, Book Dumb Brilliant, but Lazy Determinator Kira= Shinobu, The Dreaded Ice Queen

In my childhood, I watched the Italian dub of The Nanny and quite liked it. It was a dub where the translation and the acting made sure to give it proper flow and work in its new language (which was not the case with the various Star Trek dubs). Years later, I heard the original sound... and I just can't stand Fran Drescher's raspy voice. It's the only dub that I genuinely prefer to the original.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Swede here, and one thing that gets my goat is how lazy a ton of Swedish voice acting is.

Same goes for Poland. I get the feeling that animated feature films get the best voiceover directors, then there are cartoons, and video game voiceovers are apparently directed by people from the publishing companies who barely have a clue what they're doing. Can you imagine that the Polish dub of Cyberpunk 2077 is not only entirely different tonally (for example, Stan the newsreader sounds half-asleep instead of the hyped English version) but worse in several aspects (including translation at some points)?

The only publisher who treats their Polish game dubs seriously is Sony. Several years ago, they released such an abysmal dub of one of the Killzone games that probably every Polish videogame channel on Youtube was tearing them a new one. Since then, they completely flipped the script and delivered pretty much the best dubs that I've heard to date.

Microsoft, however, caught up lately. The dubs for Deathloop and that anime rhythm game/beat'em up with robots are matching Sony quality.

[up][up] Almost every single dub of The Nanny has just ignored Fran Drescher's voice and given her a more regular sexy voice. Sure it creates mini plot holes with all the jokes about her voice, but it's better than to keep listening to that voice lol.

I personally prefer to watch anime/play animesque video games dubbed whenever possible (with a few exceptions). It's different for live-action, though; the only stuff I prefer to watch dubbed there are old kung-fu movies (where the awful lip-sync adds to the cheesiness rather than distracts from the events on screen).

I ruined dubs for Live Action for my tutor when I pointed out that as hard as voice actors try they just cant really match when a character screams in Live Action. But of course if it doesnt really feature screaming a dub can still be superior see The Nanny again. Other than that I have never really noticed the flaws most people point out in dubs. I have watched dubs for so long I dont really mind. I guess it helps I dont really watch much live action. I still love live action dubs though.

[up] Eh, "screaming" is not one of the things I've thought very much about when judging dubs, but even then I'm not so sure about that.

I think, for example, that the "I hate you!" scene from Revenge of the Sith was way better in Spanish (both Latin American and European) than in its original language. Another Star Wars example is in Return of the Jedi, when Darth Vader threatens to turn Leia to the dark side. The "Never!" by Mark Hamill in the original is fine, but the Big "NO!" from the Lat-Am dub just transmits Luke's Big Brother Instinct and inner ferocity much better, in my opinion.

Semi-related to that last part, man, I really miss Jesús Barrero, he was such an amazing actor with a youthful and instantly recognizable voice :(

[up] Actually to be fair not me either but in Live Action it is WAY more obvious when people are screaming and it doesnt really match up with the footage. But in Animation you dont really mind much if the yelling doesnt match the original.

EDIT: Also those shows of emotion are extremely awesome but its not what I had in mind when talking about pure yelling. I meant actually pure outright screaming in Live Action. Not just shouting which is actually easy to even surpass in dubbing.

EDIT 2: Also I said I dont really mind that. It was my teacher who said he couldnt take any dub seriously again once I pointed this out to him.

Oh and it does have actual exceptions. Darth Vader screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO became an heartwrenching inarticulate scream of pure rage in Japanese. It helps you cant really see the actor emoting so its easy to improve.
