Warner Bros. has begun rolling out their new animated feature, "Mummies" (originally "Moomios") to select international markets…This movie was announced in 2020 and was scheduled to release in 2021 but was delayed to its final release date of 2023. And, by looking at the previews...it could be a solid movie.

This movie looks really whitewashed. I thought Ancient Egyptians were dark-skinned.

Some probably were, namely in the south of Egypt near Nubia, but ancient Egypt almost certainly wasn't ethnically homogeneous, and many would have looked like the equivalent of what we consider to be Middle Eastern today.

Granted, it's worth pointing out that Hollywood doesn't depict Egyptians as exclusively light skinned out of a desire for historical accuracy.

Hollywood depicts Egyptians as light skinned because Hollywood has always perceived Egyptians rather inaccurate as an off-shoot of Romans and Hellenism, and has a long history of depicting Hellenistic cultures as light skinned, so that's the "iconic" perception that is utilized whenever they're depicted.
