Elimination Game, Mk. II

Go To

Some rules for this edition of the Elimination Game:

  • Scorekeeper picks the theme. Please keep it reasonable because the last thing we need is drama. That is to say keep it from being political, NSFW, franchise/creator-specific (crossovers and prolific companies can work if well-known and broad enough, and with a readily available list to choose from) or with obtuse specifications.
  • The game begins with at least twenty-five entries, depending on the scorekeeper's discretion. One entry per post, and up to two posts per poster unless 48 hours have passed, then anything goes until there are 25 entrants. Wait at least two posts before posting a second entry. However, when at least a day has passed and/or at least twenty-five entries have been nominated, this rule can be relaxed a bit.
  • At the nomination phase, a maximum of two entries from the same franchise can participate at any given round, and if at all only one such entry per person. In the event that the theme can be restrictive, this rule can be relaxed as per the scorekeeper's discretion.
    • Team Battles are an exception to both of the above rules, where a poster can nominate one nominee per team in a single post, and can choose to have both entries be in the same property (limit of two per franchise still applies, except when given an exception).
  • You are not required to nominate an entry in order to participate.
  • All votes add one point to an entry, and take two points away. Those points can be distributed however you wish, so long as there is one -2 or two -1s. No exceptions!
    • Invalid votes must be edited within two scorekeeper updates in order to count.
  • Any entry that reaches zero is eliminated. Scorekeepers send them off with an evil message [[evil:like so]]
  • Space your votes between at least five other peoples' votes, unless 24 hours have passed with not that much activity. In any context, no doubleposting.
  • When hosting, please make sure that you have a death quote to send the eliminated entry off. Research the work if you have to, or at the very least make an applicable pun. The submitter can PM the death quote to the host in case they don't know the source work in question, though the host can elect not to use it if they know the work or see questionable content in the submission. (credit to Troper No. 9001)
  • If the host makes a post stating the intent to tally, they have up to an hour to do the tallying. Otherwise the post will be null and void and the round shall proceed.
  • If there's no update for 48 hours, the game can be safely called off or taken over by a willing participant. Scorekeepers must temporarily transfer duties to a different poster if they can't do so for a while.
  • This rule here is something important, so important that should be stressed! Since this game will have a somewhat competitive tinge to it, please be respectful towards others and treat this game as what it is: Just a fun game. Aggressive coercion, threats by tropers towards other tropers and hosts, and major assholism will be unaccepted, regardless if it's in the thread or in PMs. Hosts and non-hosts that receive such kinds of PMs can resolve the issues by politely dealing with the problematic troper in the PMs, but if it gets out of hand, you should discuss the issue at Ask The Tropers. (credit to callmeamuffin)
  • The one entry remaining wins!

    Original post
There already is a Country Elimination Game in this forum, but it's approaching a decade old and the last (very dormant) activity was more than a year ago at this point, so it'll make sense that I start a new thread, and not use "Country" to more clearly broaden the theme scope. We start out nominating 25 entities then have an elimination system of adding one point and removing two points in every post, distributing each individual point however they please (you can remove two points from one entry or remove one point from two). The last entity standing wins! I'll keep score for this one, and the theme for this round will be fictional areas. My first nomination:

  1. Pepperland - 10

Oh yeah, and whoever keeps score each round gets to pick the theme.

I'm gonna cap the entries here. The round will start at 9:30 AM EST. In the meantime, I would like to formally re-present my statistics for the first 100 rounds of the Elimination Game for you to browse while you wait.

I meant to have this ready by round 101, but some complications came up that I didn’t properly account for that lead to a bit of delay. Please note that these calculations don’t apply to any rounds that have happened since the end of round 100.

Over the course of the past fifty rounds, I’ve made some updates to my calculation formula. Alongside the estimated lengths in days, I decided to take it one step further and calculate the length of each round in hours.

How have the calculations been changed?

I split each round’s calculations into three categories: the Nomination Period (otherwise known as the NP), which starts when the host makes the post formally announcing the theme of the round and ends when they post the scoreboard that formally begins the round; the Elimination Period (the EP), which starts where the Nomination Period ends and ends when the host makes the final scoreboard update (for posterity, I count the “final” scoreboard update as the post that gets added to the pinned master post) that ends the round proper; and the Total Round Length, which is just the first two numbers added together. For these calculations, I go from timestamp to timestamp, rounding down to the nearest full hour: If a period were to begin at 10:30 AM and end at 11:45 AM the next day, then that’s 25 hours; if it were to end at, say, 10:15 AM the next day, it’d be 23 hours, take it or leave it. If a period were to begin, like, a minute short of the next hour, I’d round up, just for posterity. While rounds 51-100 were running, I’d end up going back and doing similar calculations for rounds 1-50 as well.

How does this new calculation method affect the averages for rounds 1-50?

The mean length of the Nomination Periods of rounds 1-50 is 32.94 hours, with a standard deviation of 16.043 hours. The mean length of the Elimination Periods of rounds 1-50 is 119.9 hours, with a standard deviation of 64.428 hours. All in all, the average Total Round Length of rounds 1-50 is 152.24 hours, with a standard deviation of 68.006 hours. Here are the data plots:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1_50_np.png

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1_50_total_hours.png

These are a lot of folders, do I have to read through all of them?

I mean, I’m not forcing you to do anything, really! In all seriousness, reading these in-depth statistics can seem a bit daunting to some, so I’ll give the general rundown of all the important bits: One round of the Elimination Game now, on average, lasts for about one week (7.3 days), or 174.8 hours, with standard deviations of 3.849 days and 93.229 hours respectively. The length of time spent submitting entries lasts for about 30 hours on average, and the amount of time spent actually playing the game averages out to around 144 hours.

The average number of contestants per round of the game is about 30, with a standard deviation of about 6. Of these contestants, TheFarmboy submitted the most first and second place victors, with eleven winners and thirteen runner-ups respectively to his name. He shares the honor of most third place finishers with Troper No. 9001, both of them having twelve to their names each. See, that wasn’t so hard!

Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

    Rounds 51- 100
Among rounds 51-100, the average NP lasted for 27.86 hours, with a standard deviation of 17.803 hours. The average EP lasted for 168.94 hours, with a standard deviation of 101.531 hours. Overall round lengths average out to 174.8 hours, or 8.24 days, with standard deviations of 93.229 hours and 4.475 days, respectively. As for contestants, we got an average of 32.12, 6.103 being its standard deviation.

    All Rounds Combined
With a hundred full rounds of the game underway, we can now refine our data and see how the totals have evolved. One round of the Elimination Game now lasts for 7.3 days on average, with a standard deviation of 3.849 days. In hours, that amounts to a mean of 175.22 and a standard deviation of 94.351. The addition of the past 50 rounds has increased the average by 0.94 days and the standard deviation by about one day.

The average Nomination Period lasts for 30.4 hours and the average Elimination Period lasts for 144.42 hours; their respective standard deviations are 17.052 hours and 88.125 hours. The average number of contestants per round of the Elimination Game is a much cleaner 30 (rounded down from 30.27) with a standard deviation of 6 (rounded up from 5.63). This is, compared to the last data set, an increase of four contestants to the average and two contestants to the standard deviation.

    The Inevitable Statistical Outliers
The standards for the longest rounds have changed, my brothers (gender neutral). Our current longest round of the game is round 93 (Spooky Things), coming in at a whopping 26 days in length (or 636 total hours). I don’t know what could have happened to make that round stall for so long (most likely an inactive host with no one helping to fill in for them in their absence), but let’s hope that, as a community, we try to prevent things like that from happening again (no offense to the host of that round, I’m sure they tried to take care of what they could under their presumably busy schedule). At a decisive second place in terms of long-ass rounds is round 88 (Fictional Families), lasting for sixteen days. The next longest length of a round is 15 days, an honor held by three separate rounds as of late: 30 (Fictional Rivalries, returning to vie for its long-runner podium spot from the last calculation I did), 83 (Second-last placers) and 85 (Role Association). Scenarios like this are the reason why I also calculate round lengths by hours; it’s a solid tie-breaker method. Using the hourly calculations, we can conclude that the true third-longest round of the Elimination Game so far is Fictional Rivalries, coming in at a total 373 hours in length. Cats and Mothers (rounds 13 and 19 respectively) still stand in the running for shortest round, now sharing that spot with All-Winners (51) and Order v. Chaos (53). All four of these rounds lasted for about two days. If we wanna get really specific, our top three shortest rounds are Order v. Chaos at 47 total hours, All-Winners at 55 total hours, and a tie between Cats and Mothers, both clocking in at 64 hours total.

When it comes to having the most contestants, Fire v. Ice with its 50 entrants returns to claim a place on this podium, albeit only at second compared to last time. Round 27 now stands right in between Role Association (round 85), beating out the Dogs round (14) by a whopping six contestants (42 compared to Dogs’ 40), and Pirates v. Ninjas (round 70), coming in at an unbeatable 60 contestants. Wow!

What impact does this have on who submitted the most winners?
In terms of first place winners, TheFarmboy still reigns supreme, having added seven winners to his name since we last spoke for a grand total of eleven first place entries. The title of second most winners is a three-way tie between uncertanSearcher, Troper No. 9001 and LucasdaKool, who all have eight winners each. Third most winners is another three-way tie, this time between MummyGaGa, JackCossack and Graf von Tirol, who each have five.

Farmboy now also holds the definitive record for most second place entries; whereas he originally shared the title with Graf last time, he has managed to push past the breaking point as his numbers have climbed up to a whopping thirteen runner-ups. Graf is still on the podium, now demoted to runner-up of the runner-ups; he shares this honor with both uncertanSearcher and Jake, having ten runner-ups to their name each. Third most runner-ups goes to TroperNo9001 with seven.

TheFarmboy's chart dominance starts to truly be challenged when we look at the record for most third place winners. Whereas he was undoubtedly on top with the last data set, he now has to share the top of the podium with TroperNo9001 as they both have twelve third place wins to their name. uncertanSearcher comes in behind them with ten third place finishes, followed by Graf with seven.

All in all, Farmboy is still goated with the sauce; maybe even more so than last time.

    Other Miscellaneous Observations
Data on the sources of podium placers and first boots is gonna take a while to get together, as I am currently in the process of completely reworking the method I’ve been using to calculate that data. Be on the lookout for that. In the meanwhile, I do have data for hosts and first boots that I can present.

TheFarmboy is still the host with the most, having hosted a grand total of sixteen rounds to date. Behind him is MummyGaGa, hosting thirteen rounds, and behind him is both Graf von Tirol and callmeamuffin, who share a record of ten rounds hosted to date.

For most first boots, look no further than YourEternalTroper, with a grand total of thirteen to his name. Trailing behind him is none other than myself, with seven. Another tie coming in at third, Troper No. 9001} and Snicka both have six first boots each.

Thank you, everyone, for being patient with me and, more importantly, making getting this far a reality.
