Well, the main character was named Oscar, maybe that's enough to qualify.
EDIT: Joke aside, I think it was the All-Star Cast. A lot of high-profile actors played both in Shark Tale and in The Boss Baby, putting them high on Hollywood's radar.

There were a lot of movies that could have taken its spot: Howl's Moving Castle, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The Polar Express, Team America: World Police, but nah.

The legend has returned. No, Coppola wasn't voicing a character in Shark Tale. You must be thinking of Martin Scorsese.

Oh yeah him, basically the Academy darling.
I'm glad The Incredibles won (although I smidge prefer Shrek 2) but Sharktale doesn't deserve to be on their level. This irks oh so much. It doesn't even have the benefit of Boss Baby's magnificent animation.

I don't think anyone said they dislike Will Smith. It wasn't his performance that was the problem with Shark Tale (the big issues with that movie were the cynical writing and the Uncanny Valley character designs).
But let's take this discussion to the general Dreamworks thread
and keep this one for Puss in Boots.

I LOVED and still love Shark Tale. I think its not the best Dreamworks movie but even if it is the worst it's still good. And now that Dreamworks actually outdoes Pixar's output and Pixar is forgiven for doing "Just okay" movies I think it would be majorly hypocritical for people to not do the same for Dreamworks.
And even if you hate Shark Tale we eventually got KUNG FU PANDA out of it, for Jack Black and Angelina Jolie worked on it and eventually went on to work on KFP.

They did just link to the general Dreamworks thread in an attempt to remind that this is a Puss in Boots thread...
I don't remember much about Shark Tale beyond Angelina trying to pull off her Ms. Fanservice chops as a small fish and, for some reason, "SeBaaaaAastiAn, the Whale-Washing DooOOOoooOolPhiN!."
Ehh, I like the idea that he is as himself, a wolf. It's not just "cats" thing either (and it doesn't make sense, the whole dog vs cat thing doesn't really apply to wolves), since wolves have been analogous to death in folklore and beliefs.
By Shrek-isms, he still snarks and has some flairs like a multi-purpose weapon rather than a traditional skeleton with scythe. It's Puss that sends him over the edge.
Like they're clearly taking him more seriously as a threat than most Shrek villains, but let's be fair, he has to have some sarcasm and irony about him in this universe.
I like how the final moment with him kind of implies he's just a Punch-Clock Villain who let a petty grudge get the better of him. I could still see this guy chilling in plenty comedic scenes and it would come off as perfectly in character (like imagine him snarking when he comes for the next villain that kicks the bucket).

Disney Marvel: OH NOW YOU BETTER BELIEVE ITS ON DREAMWORKS.
But seriously. I love this. Ironically getting bought by Universal somehow made Dreamworks better instead of worse like Disney did with Pixar. I think its because Universal knows Dreamworks has to stand out in some sort of way and thus became their more artistically daring studio.

In other words: their good movies plus Shark Tale and The Boss Baby.
