Well, "inspired" in the sense that Handler thought there would be a US market for such a doll for girls by seeing one and basically asking her daughter "Hey, would you play with something like that?"

I don't even know how to respond to that.
Either way I'm going to see it again tomorrow.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadFor someone who has genine criticism of the fim (as in, not Misogyny) Verilybitchie (a They / She creator) has a good video.
She's specifically critical of Sasha and how underbaked she feels.

Watch SymphogearMight not have seen it, but I feel like it's a nice counter to Tobias Drake's example of bad criticism.
Oh, my bad. I went ahead and blotted them out.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Though genuine question.
Where did all this idea that the reasons this was a success was because it was a new freash IP I've seen come from?
But like isn't this an old ip. I for example grew up on Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper and Barbie in the Nutcracker (tbh Tim Curry's mouse king is still freaking great). And so did many others. So it's already coming up with a pre baked audience.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I have to imagine the audience for this film isn't largely based on people who watched the animated films.
Not as a knock against those movies, but they're wildly different in tone and such. For most people, I think the idea of a Barbie live-action movie was wild enough to garner attention, and then it came backed with what seemed, at the time, an equally strange choice in the creative team.
But that also helped, as Gerwig and Baumbach are both highly acclaimed.
@Lonecourier: Look, I'm not saying you have to agree with her opinion, but she does source her reasons for it.
Its specifically about Mattel's hypocrisy in regards to Barbie and trying to pinkwash her, even with Gerwig's direction, and how Greta Gerwig isn't perfect as a director (I even agree with her on the ending of Little Women, too).

Yeah, speaking as someone who did grew up with those old, ugly-ass C Gi movies (I say that with affection), the biggest reason I went to watch is because the sheer size of the meme the movie had become online, especially when paired with Oppenheimer.
Yeah to me it's like...the Jurassic Park movies and that animated Camp Cretaceous show on Netflix.
They're part of the same franchise, but I don't think there's too much audience overlap there.
Granted, when I saw Barbie there were definitely some younger people there, but they all seemed to be early teens or tweens at youngest.
Lots of people interpreted the messaging as anti-male, but now having seen it, it really did not come off to me as "All men are evil!", as much as saying that men need to find healthier ways of dealing with their insecurities and find their own identity instead of giving in to toxic masculinity.
There were some interesting points raised up-thread as the movie is deeply satirical, but Mattel still had to sign off on it, so there's no mention of Bild Lilli or controversies involving Mattel's use of Chinese sweatshop labor. The tagline "If you love Barbie, this movie is for you! If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you!" rings true as it feels like both a celebration of Barbie and a deconstructive parody of it at the same time. This puts it an odd place for some, as some might complain that it didn't go far enough in its satire and criticism, while some Barbie fans might find the satire off-putting. As an avid longtime Barbie and fashion doll collector, I have enough of a sense of humor to enjoy the satire though.
It's pretty funny how these chuds claim that this movie is anti-men but then say the film "accidentally" makes Ken sympathetic.
Like no. The filmmakers did that on purpose. These dummies come so close to the actual point of the film but their brains have been ruined by the "woke" boogeyman and see "woke" everywhere
