Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Keep Jafar. He’s in intense pain from his lamp being destroyed and dying in agony; his want to marry Jasmine is G-rated villainy, written for way too young an audience to be problematic.

Tbh my memory's foggy of the first film, hence why that was just a question, not me saying "HE MUST BE CUT".

I’ll take a potato chip… and EAT IT!
Ok given that it looks like his arc is over now I am going to bring up this MHA Candidate for a cut
- Dabi, born Toya Todoroki, is one of the most dangerous and crafty members of the League of Villains. A master of psychological warfare who enjoys making his opponents doubt themselves with well-placed words, Dabi later reveals he is only using the League towards his own purpose: the ruination of his father Enji Todoroki, new number one hero Endeavor. Recording a video to expose the abuse he put his family through to the world, Dabi releases it at a moment of incredible crisis to destroy faith in heroes while revealing his true identity to Endeavor and Shoto, aiming to tear down hero society, spread the ideals of his idol Stain and utterly destroy his father.
Now while he is cunning for sure I feel his last part in the final arc kinda of makes him to unstable and childish.
Mid fight against Endeavor he completely loses his mind, reverting to his child sekd mentally screaming for his dad to look at him and saying “Natsu let’s play” completely out of it
Then when he starts going nuclear we find out his childish motivation to have everyone, not just his dad look at him is still a motivatior for him. And lastly after being beaten he starting ranting about how he hates his family and they should all burn all while he is half dead.
I feel the dude has pretty much lost all of his sanity and dignity at this point and given the fight is over now him making a comeback is impossible
I honestly feel he needs to go

Yeah, also forgot if we also included Dabi in the "wait until his arc was over" discussion alongside AFO.
Berserk Button: misusing Nightmare Fuel
At this point, Dabi's arc is over, and all of his dignity has gone up in flames with his Sanity Slippage.
While I agree with waiting longer for AFO, I'd be okay with moving forward for cutting Dabi right now.

Fine. Cut on Dabi, and it seems like unless a future work somehow managed to reignite him somehow, it's highly unlikely.

And I honestly do not see how Dabi, victim of abuse having a breakdown over his past is something that is out of character

[Insert fire pun here as I voice my agreement with the notion of cutting Dabi.]
It is I, the narrator, categorising addict and writer of books you haven't read.
There is a MB entry on Half-Life about the G-Man.
- The G-Man is an enigmatic bureaucrat who uses his supernatural abilities to carry out the whims of his "employers". Always watching from afar, the G-Man monitors people who exhibit great survival instincts to employ them under his cause. Responsible for bringing the crystal sample that caused the Black Mesa Incident, the G-Man went against the orders of his superiors to rescue Alyx Vance and Adrian Shephard for his own purposes. The G-Man would rearm a nuclear warhead to destroy the entire facility to cover-up his tracks. When Gordon Freeman killed the Nihilanth, the G-Man recruited him as Xen was now under the control of his employers. Twenty years later, he sent Gordon to City 17 to help overthrow the rule of the Combine. Although he was held back by the powers of the Vortigaunts, the G-Man waited until they were distracted to order Alyx to warn her father about the Borealis. With motives known only to himself, the G-Man removes any sense of choice from the people he manipulates.
While he is a solid keeper imho, the entry omits the stuff the G-Man does Half-Life: Alyx, which had been established as canon. In it, he lures Alyx to the Combine prison and has her free him, in turn swindling her into a Deal with the Devil so her father Eli could be brought back... albeit at the cost of Alyx replacing Gordon Freeman as the G-Man's pawn.
Well in fairness he was proposed before Alyx came out
But yeah it’s worth updating
Keep Jafar and ERB Darth Vader. Jafar recovers from his defeat in the first film really well and his attraction to Jasmine is too cartoony to be disqualifying and partially due to her seducing him as a distraction. I'd treat his death as a similar case to Father Puchi since it does look very painful and he is caught by surprise. Darth Vader might be against Hitler but he's still portrayed as a ruthless Evil Overlord in his own right.
Cut Dabi. His dignity and sanity have officially burned up. I know he's a victim of abuse but that doesn't make his Villainous Breakdown subtle. I think we agreed to discuss Dabi when his character arc is over (which it is).
I agree someone should expand G-Man. New information and feats have been added since his writeup.
Oh I'm not asking for a cut, it's a YMMV trope after all. Long drawn out deaths that aren't a Defiant to the End or Face Death with Dignity make me concerned make me cautious? I think the switch up from literally cackling to then dying in agony is what rubs me the wrong way.
Another thing as well is uh, isn't he a bit creepy to Jasmine in the 1st film during the film's climax when she's 16?
