Old Magnificent Bastard thread
Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread
.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List
Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here
) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread
.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread
, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread
. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.
Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

I just realized something, The Stupendium has 8 confirmed MB entries. Does it deserve a separate page?
Eh, good enough.So, I have a question.
Say you have a character who mostly fits the criteria; they're a bastard, they're cunning, etc.
But what if literally ever other character is just so damn stupid? Like all it would take is basic common sense for this character to outsmart everyone. Would that be disqualifying?
We already discussed him if I remember correctly. Several times in fact. He was deemed to not count given the only people he fools are... well... Spongebob and Patrick. Hank Scorpio, conversely fooled several people even Lisa thought he was a good guy.

Ight, so it's been a hot minute since Kirby's Return To Dreamland Deluxe came out, and i'm happy (if admittedly unsuprised) to say that Magalor's still good. Dude's reaction to being stuck in an alternate dimension is to fight his way outta it, kill the thing that was corrupting him earlier, and find refuge in the Team Kirby Clash dimension (Yes, microtransactions are canon now lmao i love this game). And yes, while it's shown the Master Crown was a bad influence on him its made abundantly clear he wanted to Take Over the World from the start if anyone's wondering.
So does anyone mind if i rewrite his entry to include this stuff?
Yeah, that guy from Chocolate with Nuts is gonna be a bit of a tough sell—especially because our reasons for rejecting him the other two times before still apply. Belle Bottom would be an easier sell than him and I'm certainly NOT betting on her. As far as I know, nothing changed as to why she doesn't count.
VERY late on these things, but I approve of both fixing the Fillmore! location and the quote for Red Right Hand.
I wasn't really thinking of anyone in particular. Was just a question that occurred to me.
Now that I think about, we have Blackadder right? A version of him is listed down and he's the Only Sane Man in his setting.
With Blackadder, while it's true that he is largely surrounded by idiots, the parts where he really shines has him going up against those with fairly normal intelligence. He manages to fool the Duke of Wellington into thinking he is the Regent Prince with his acting alone. I think, he also got revenge on the pair of actors who were not particularly dumb either.

Just wanna double check if this is way too much of a bitch move to do. On Rise of the Tomb Raider Ana's listed and while she does tick a lot of the cards for this trope I have one issue with her. Here's the writeup.
- Ana is a member of Trinity who was tasked with assassinating Richard Croft. Successful in seducing Richard, she was unable to carry out her mission solely because she herself genuinely fell in love with him. Suffering from lung cancer, Ana was determined to find the Divine Source to cure her disease and make herself immortal by having her brother Konstantin, whose life she manipulated, find it for her and uses Reverse Psychology to get Lara Croft involved in the search. Ana later has Konstantin choke herself in front of Lara to get the Divine Source's location from her only stopping the charade when she realizes Lara doesn't know where it is also and offers her a chance to join Trinity. When Lara refuses and escapes, Ana follows her to the Atlas's location where she retrieves it from Lara and uses it to find the Divine Source. Though wanting to use the Divine Source to avoid death, The lengths and risks Ana is willing to go through proves her boldness and determination, eventually concluding that being killed by the Divine Source or Trinity are both better ways to go out over slowly dying from her disease.
How did she get her hooks into Konstantin? When he was a child, Ana stabbed his hands repeatedly to resemble stigmata while he was asleep to make make him into a delusion nutjob, thinking he was chosen by God to be a warrior.
Idk if this would seem to be a bit too vile for an MB but I'd thought to bring it up since search function isn't being my friend yet again.
What's wrong D-16? Rise up!It is indeed bad but I see it was mentioned in her EP
and it seems the character's genuine love for Richard and tenacity to live past her illness are quite emphasized as well.
I do agree from my memory of the game that she's not portrayed as cowardly or pathetic with her illness. And her care for Richard was genuine enough that she seemed genuinely sad about his death and harming Lara.
Idk something about her manipulating her brother as a child via those means even though nothing in the story subverts Konstantins care for her. When she's shown to be a Manipulative Bitch without having to use those methods. Eh its a bit too far considering what it resembles.
I guess it being offscreen (although you can see how it's affect Konstantin) helps nullify it?

Hey everyone. I guess I'm back now. Question mark.
So apparently Shotgun Nun got a sequel called The Wrath of God. I did an EP on its main Anti-Hero, Sister Eloise
. She definitely counts in the first book, but she...slips up here and there in the sequel. Her biggest slip-up is towards the end of the book where she tries to rescue a preteen girl named Sophia who's held captive by Nate Robinson in a quarry full of goons. A minion named Lawrence (whom is forced into helping Eloise) advises her that it's better for him to sneak her into the quarry. And just as they reach the quarry, they notice a car parked outside the gates with two minions standing in front of it. Instead of trying to hide or revising her plan, Eloise tells Lawrence to just run them over and barge into the quarry.
Predictably, Lawrence is killed in the ensuing shootout, the car crashes, almost killing Eloise, and she's forced to kill most of Nate's goons, only for her to get wounded and captured. While captured and tied to a chair, her right fingers, and then her hand, are all cut off as Nate tortures her, and Eloise accepts that she's going to die and that she failed Sophia. The only reason why she doesn't is because Nate accidentally burns through the rope holding Eloise down because torturing her with a blowtorch instead of just shooting her in the face was a good idea, giving Eloise a chance to escape, knock out Nate, and kill most of the remaining goons. The book ends with Nate and his whole gang dead, Eloise alive (albeit now missing a hand), and Sophia following in her footsteps to seek out and kill any sinners they can find.
I'm aware that MBs can make mistakes and bounce back from them, but I'm just wondering if this is too much of a screw-up that negates Eloise's status as an MB. If it is, then we can chop her. But if not, then I'll expand on her write-up in a couple days.
I write stories and shiz. You can read them here. That is very bad, at the same time is it noted she's still a badass and ready to fight, or is she retired and in an advisory role?

You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the mid
No, it's made very clear that Eloise is going to continue seeking vengeance against sinners despite her injury (Shotgun Nun 3 maybe?). Only now, she's got a Little Miss Badass to help her. There is a brief moment where Eloise believes she's useless immediately after she's disfigured, but she quickly recovers from it and manages to kill three of Nate's goons with her shotgun despite only having one hand.

Alright fair enough about Vyrthur. Sorry abou that, it was just a concern of mine in hindsight.
