Old Magnificent Bastard thread
Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread
.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List
Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here
) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread
.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread
, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread
. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.
Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Question, with Kira Yoshikagw have we ever discussed if his gross scenes ruin his magnificence? Because the reason I think he cuts is because there are scenes where he pervertedly licks the disembodied, quickly decaying hands of dead women, or uncomfortably roleplays with them.
This is played for creepiness and disgust (especially with the HORRIBLE
sound effects in the anime, another clip I couldn't find on You Tube is one where he "cleans" with one of the hands, and we hear the uncomfortable sounds of bones breaking). Then before dying he licks a living nurse's hand and freaks her the fuck out (in itself sexual harassment bordering on assault, even if his plan was to revert time).
My problem is I dunno if a guy can be MB when scenes (that are very important for his characterization) are played not just for horror but for VISCERAL DISGUST at him. MB's should be a joy to watch someway every time they're on screen, not make you recoil and uncomfortable. And it's not even something about him you can forget because, again, there's the scene at the end of his arc where he licks a disturbed nurses hand while announcing his hardened cock tales to her, reminding you he is a creepy fucking freak in case you forgot the previous C H E W scenes with rotting hands.
I am okay with adding Kira to the RI list if he has come up so often recently. That said, I really can't tell what work he is from because it is not mentioned in the above cut proposal, and I have never heard of the character so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadYeah, add Kira to the Resolved Items list.
As an aside note, I wouldn't use the sound effects to argue that a character is too viscerally disgusting to count. After all, the various Predator keepers we have skin people, sometimes with very detailed corpses, but it doesn't change that they are cool and impressive.

"It was the best of times, it was the BLURST of times?"I don't see Kira's creepy traits as that different from those of Horror candidates like The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come 2009, the Predators, Hannibal Lector (films only), Johan Liebert, and of course John Kramer/Jigsaw. Jigsaw's traps are often supposed to be shocking and disgusting but the trope wouldn't be the same without him. I'm all for putting Yoshikage Kira (Jojo) on the RI list alongside Darkrai.
Now that "Brittle Bones Nicky 3
" is out, should I expand the titular character's entry to include the events of "3" or wait 2 weeks (since "3"'s only been out for 19 hours)?
I have two main issues with the unnamed father's entry from the song, "A Boy Named Sue."
- Magnificent Bastard:
- "A Boy Named Sue
", from At San Quentin: The father is a Gunslinger who abandoned his family after his son's birth, but not before giving his son the embarrassing name "Sue". Wanting Sue to grow up strong and smart in a rough world by beating up people who made fun of his name, along with having no father figure to look up to throughout most of his life and when finally encountered by an enraged Sue decades later, the father puts up a good, brutal fight. When Sue draws his gun on him, the father smiles, knowing he's made his son tough, even reconciling with his boy afterwards.
- "A Boy Named Sue
The first is that Johnny Cash didn't actually write the song. Shel Silverstein did, and Cash just did a more well-known cover of it (and the original version was just called "Boy Named Sue" rather than "A Boy Named Sue"). While the lyrics are altered a bit, the story is pretty much exactly the same in both versions. My second issue is that I font really think the father really qualifies. Don't get me wrong, he definitely has traits of a Magnificent Bastard. He's a dangerous brute who gave his son an embarrassing name in order to toughen him up in a rough world, is strong enough to challenge his also toughened son in a fight, and accepts his defeat and even states that he doesn't blame his son for hating him. But, when you get down to it, this guy is an absolute prick. Like, he'd easily be a Hate Sink if it weren't for his Evil Virtues (and if the song weren't played for Black Comedy). Not only did he outright abandon his son and wife leaving them with almost nothing, but he caused his son to be bullied and miserable his whole live by, of course, naming him "Sue." Sure, t's played for Black Comedy and he has his (rather twisted) reasons for the latter action, but abandoning your family and deliberately naming your kid something that will get them bullied does not come across as "magnificent" to me at all. There's also the ending (ehich the entry itself forgot to mention). While he and his son, the narrator, seemingly reconcile at the end, it's actually comically subverted when the narrator reveals that he still hates his dad and the name he gave him (especially in the original Silverstein version, where he ends the song by comically ranting about wanting to attack his dad again if they were to meet again). So even the song itself doesn't actually consider him that magnificent either. While I like this song and find it hilarious, I really think the dad comes off less like a Magnificent Bastard and more like a comically cruel, family-abandoning, child-attacking deadbeat who just happens to have some Evil Virtues. I think he should be cut, but what do y'all think?

When a hero uses underhanded tactics in battle, they're "smart". But when a villain does it, they're a "coward". Is this the society we live in?Put Yoshikage Kira on Resolved Items. Also, found 2 entries on YMMV.Fighting Fantasy and they seem to be unapproved since I can't find them in the main MB pages and couldn't find a history of their discussion. Can I remove them?
Eh, good enough.Y'all mind if I try rewriting them? And can I have the effortpost links for reference?
Edited by Siegfried1337 on Sep 21st 2024 at 8:33:22 AM
Eh, good enough.Feel free.
Here they are: Dark Elf Sorcerer
, Jaxartes
.
Here's the best of what I could do at the moment:
- Fangs of Fury: Jaxartes proves to be much more dangerous than he looks. Working alongside Ostragoth the Grim, he shows himself to be an genius tactician by going for Zamarra's protection magic, destroying the city's sole defense and allowing Ostragoth's army to march in Zamarra unscathed, while also sending forces after the Player Character's allies to prevent them from assisting the player, even having one of his forces infiltrate the city to misguide his enemies into his traps.
- Siege of Sardath: The Dark Elf Sorcerer is the main leader of the Dark Elves. Seeking to take over Allansia by destroying the main source of resistance, the city-state of Sardath while also holding Corianthus the Storm Giant captive to use his powers to obliterate the defense Sardath has, preventing their escape routes from being used in the process. He also manages to undermine the city from within by ordering the assassinations of the ruling council members while replacing them with shapeshifters that follow his order to lead the citizens into traps, with one of the council members, the Player Character, nearly being the victim of one of these. Ruthless, but polite, the Dark Elf Sorcerer regards the player as an Worthy Opponent for the challenge they provide, and is only defeated in an tense but narrow Battle of Wits.
Any tips?
Eh, good enough.
