Old Complete Monster cleanup thread
Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Idk about the exact site rules for fanart but we do have at least 2 other fanart images on the image links page (the two for Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2). I know we aren't allowed to have fanart as page images without permission from the original artist (I tried getting one of the Horrigan images up for the Fallout page but never got a response from the artist) but I'm not sure if that applies to image links.

Makoto's name on Yomi's entry for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code (on Video Games) is spelled incorrectly. Surname is "Kagutsuchi", as in, a reference to the fire deity. Please correct that.

Watched Eye in the Sky a while back and I think the trio of terrorist leaders are significant. All of their actions are indeed there, we see footage of them attacking the Westgate Mall attack and while we don't see the massacre at the University, given that they use suicide bombers to attack and the entire movie revolves around preventing such an attack, I would say it's easy to establish a pattern here.
As for Susan Helen Danford, in proposal G notes that her backstory says she is simply British and joined al-Shabaab. But she actually has more to say about the past. It is said that she had a difficult childhood, converted to Islam at the age of 15, and then joined terrorists. This is all and not only the film does not try to evoke sympathy for her, but this is too little and a difficult childhood in itself, although sad, does not give her the right to organize numerous terrorist attacks with hundreds or even thousands of deaths. But the whole point is that it only rises once and doesn’t deepen normally. And one more...strange thing. Muhammad Abdisalaam. I don’t know if I have a different version, or if this is his other name, surname, etc., but in the film they call him Al-Khadiya. I don’t know why he has different names in the sentence and in the film, but in the film, every time he is addressed, he is called Al-Hadiya. Abdulad Al-Hadiya. So I'll just change the name, but it's a very strange thing.
And yes, they definitely have plenty of character. As in the case of Carmen's father, the principle here is "the description of other people and the actions of the villains themselves." Susan has the most character, but in general all three can be described as manipulative, clearly Faux Affably Evil, while making propaganda, plus the implication that they are radicals. Rashid Hamoud is also called a cardinator of Al-Shabaab, which only adds to his character. Overall, I would say that all three of them have enough character. Al-Hadiya may have the least character, having a flat personality, but still a person. Oh, and he is also Susan's fiancé (and not the invisible other leader, as was said in the proposal). So, yes, two C Ms, husband and wife. So overall I think they are all CM and overall they turned out to be accurate, it’s just that one has a different name, Susan has a more detailed backstory, but overall everything is correct.
I have an unusual concern for Heinz Richter from Hunters. The scene where he forces prisoners to kill each other in a human chess game was deleted from the official release, meaning his stand out crime that vaulted over the colossal heinous standards is now off-screen villainy. What is done in a case like this?

You mean like the production edited the scene out when they released DVDs or on a streaming service? Anyway that doesn’t sound like it disqualifies the candidate, if it happened.

Guess I am a cut for Paula as well. Kinda a shame given she is such an awful bastard, but hey, it happens. And yeah, don't beat yourself up about it Mermaid.
Alright, so...first time making a cut post, but I genuinely feel like this one is worth a discussion. Mainly taking a look at a Man on the Internet candidate. While we did discuss Omega just a few days ago and I guess it sorta just got divided at the end (and I guess he's staying?), I am legit concerned about somebody else. I genuinely think there is a bigger problem here with this candidate:
- "Brinstar Depths": Dark Samus desires to assimilate everything in the universe into an extension of her will, leaving her victims "drained" and effectively soulless. Having infected Samus Aran with Phazon, Dark Samus tries to break the former's will so that she will fall to the corruption more easily.
Now, here's my big thing; with Omega, you can at least argue that we have enough onscreen evidence to support his boasting about massacring humanity and destroying the world given we have the lovely image of him standing on top of a destroyed city with a hand poking out. For Galeem and Dharkon, you can at least say they have enough onscreen evidence given that the song does show their war against each other and show clips of the game. With Dimentio, well, that song later ended up being attached to a (sorta) musical adaptation of Super Paper Mario and we do see him outright begin to destroy worlds. Lavos and the Radiance are both attached to musicals as well to help boost their crimes, and they at least have some Adaptation Personality Change.
Now...with Dark Samus, this isn't really as much of the case. The song sorta just shows her fighting Samus and other Smash Bros. fighters and...that's kinda it. The rest of the song is sorta just her talking about her evil plans. For me, it kinda becomes hard to really say her song has enough visual evidence or even story to really make her stand out from somebody like Marx or Ridley (who both were previously cut), because they just...don't really have enough onscreen evidence to support them. They sorta just sit there for a couple of minutes going on about their evil plans while not enough visual evidence supports this.
Don't get me wrong, her plan sounds awful given that it seems to suggest Dark Samus has a Assimilation Plot that goes on a universal level, but at the same time...she really just talks about it while the song just shows her fighting random characters. I don't really know if I can really say this is enough.
Oh, and before anyone mentions she is part of a musical bytes like Afton, Baby, Lavos, Dimentio, etc., Dark Samus is a bit of a different case. The Smash Bros. Musical Bytes are literally just anthology songs that really have nothing to do with each other and really could work outside of a musical. Most of them really don't have enough of a plot (minus Galeem and Dharkon), and Dark Samus isn't an exception.
Personally, leaning toward a cut, but hey, if you guys disagree and have solid reasons to why, that's fine too.

Just to be clear, did Hidan from Naruto get cut according to this thread?
Hidan is definitely cut— there were a few holdouts who wanted to keep him but the majority vote was definitely for him to go.
Cut Dark Samus (the song one PRETTY sure the original keeps still), Paula Miner and Kate cut for Hidan too.
As the original effortposter for the song version of Dark Samus, sure, cut her. Her EP was from a different era of song candidates, to say the least.

Double checking the episode, all reference to the human chess stuff is completely gone. The only details left of Richter's crimes as a guard are that he tortured Markus Roth for 7 days and then killed him for retaliating.
