Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Okay folks, I've got work today, and then tomorrow I'm leaving on a trip and won't be back until Sunday my time. I'll have my phone, but trying to edit pages can be a pain. So, I'm submitting a shorter batch before I leave. The Pokémon stuff will go next week.

  • Bakeneko Mononoke Pilot Arc: Lord Yoshiyuki is the pathetic, geriatric patriarch of the Saika family, and the cause for the Bakeneko's existence. Decades ago, Yoshiyuki kidnapped a young woman named Tamaki, imprisoning her in a tiny cage and regularly raping her with his family's knowledge for decades, which drove her to attempt suicide by starvation. After his son Yoshikuni rapes Tamaki out of curiosity, Yoshiyuki is driven into a rage for her "seducing" his son and beats her to death in front of her beloved pet cat, causing it to be twisted into the Bakeneko as a result of grief. In the present, Yoshiyuki lies about the truth as the Bakeneko threatens the lives of others, claiming to have treated Tamaki in a loving fashion before the Bakeneko reveals the truth.
  • Middlewest: Nicolas Raider is a seemingly polite man who has countless runaway children across the Middlewest captured and enslaved to work on his farms. Raider is introduced fatally electrocuting a boy who attempted to escape. Nicolas puts the children to work on fields of highly flammable Ethol. Nicolas takes an interest in Abel, trying to manipulate the boy into becoming his employee. When Abel uses his new position to plan an escape with his friends, Nicolas lets it happen to test Abel, planning to beat him when the boy stands up to him. After an army comprised of people who came to save the children attacks his farm, Nicolas orders them and the rebellious children killed, and tries to force Abel to watch the massacre before killing him.
  • Night Club: Gunner John is a centuries-old vampire drifter who puts together a brutal crew that commit murder after murder wherever they appear. Introduced massacring an entire family and feeding a little girl to "Bloody" Mary, it is revealed this is an entirely normal occurrence for Gunner John, who relishes in slaughter. Having forced a cop to join the crew and prove himself by taking a life, Gunner John kills him after he turns traitor and promises the young Night Crew painful deaths if they do not kill their families for him, threatening a little girl to lure them out when they opt to take the fight to him and his.
  • All the Boys Love Mandy Lane: Mandy Lane herself is a heartless manipulator behind her façade of purity. A former outcast turned popular student, Mandy realized she could get others to do anything for her, witnessing a student accidentally kill himself to impress her. Viewing her new friends as beneath her, Mandy plots a killing spree with her troubled friend Emmett as part of a Suicide Pact; having Emmett butcher her friends for her, Mandy acts caring and compassionate to them, before gutting a distressed Chloe and leaving her to bleed out. Backing out on her pact with Emmett, Mandy has him take the fall after killing him, presenting herself as an innocent victim and heroic survivor, before manipulating and sparing Garth to back up her cover story.
  • Australia: Neil Fletcher was the corrupt station hand of Faraway Downs. Fletcher murders his boss, the husband of Lady Sarah Ashley, while also framing a local Indigenous elder, King George, for the crime. Desiring to take control of the ranch so that he can sell it for profit to King Carney, Fletcher's treachery is exposed by Nullah, Fletcher's illegitimate Indigenous son. A furious Fletcher becomes physically abusive to Nullah and other Indigenous women trying to protect him. Upon being fired by Lady Sarah, Fletcher releases all of the ranch’s cattle out of spite. Later allying with King Carney and competing with Faraway Downs deliver their cattle, Fletcher sabotages his rivals by scaring the 1,500 cattle into a stampede, where they trample Flynn to death, and the cattle very nearly charge off a cliff face. When King Carney confronts Fletcher over his crimes, Fletcher murders Carney by pushing the latter into crocodile-infested waters where he is devoured, before marrying his oblivious daughter to inherit his wealth. Following the Darwin bombings, Fletcher blames his financial ruin on the heroes and especially Nullah, who Fletcher tries to shoot dead.
  • Silverwing trilogy:
    • Goth is the chief servant of Cama Zotz, a mighty bat from South America who becomes the greatest nemesis to Shade. Having escaped captivity, Goth lures Shade into a fake friendship so he may consume Shade's entire colony, murdering others in the way and devouring a host of innocent bats. Upon being recaptured, Goth intends to cause mass murder and chaos with bombings as a sacrifice to his God, ending the series with several other murders and escaping to spread his dark lord's faith and unleash him on the world.
    • Cama Zotz himself is a demonic bat-god worshiped by the cannibalistic Vampyrum Spectrum, and the ultimate evil of the series. The creator of the Underworld, Zotz is the one behind all of Goth's atrocities, ordering him to commit slavery, genocide, and mass sacrifice. Zotz intends to extinguish the Sun and wipe out all life; enslaves the souls of the dead and denies them a proper afterlife; and punishes anyone who displeases him—even his devout followers—by eternally torturing them within his stomach.
  • H/JACK: Edgar Janssen is the ruthless co-leader of the Cheapside Firm, a crime syndicate based in London. To ensure he has subordinates that will do what he says, Janssen blackmails various people throughout his local community by threatening to kill their loved ones, including children, in order to force them to do certain jobs for him, which include dispatching hitmen to kill various people. As such, when the syndicate is busted and Edgar, alongside his partner John Bailey-Brown, his partner-in-crime, are arrested, Janssen coerces several people to hijack Flight KA29 to blackmail the U.K. government into releasing them. Once they are released, Edgar then has his double agent on the flight take control of the cockpit by killing the pilot. Edgar then tries to let Flight KA29 crash into Central London, which would kill hundreds, just so he can get all the money he wants from the financial scheme he and John are making out of this disaster.
  • Misfits' Series 2 Episode 6: Brian, also known as Monsieur Grand Fromage or the "Milk Guy", was once a simple teaboy working in a cafe until the storm hit, where he gained the power of "lactokinesis". When he gets ignored in favour of other storm-affected individuals with more impressive powers, including the titular Misfits themselves, Brian goes on a murder spree to show how off how powerful he really is. First choking his girlfriend to death with the dairy product she ate earlier before doing the same to his talent agent and a woman with healing powers, he drowns Kelly with milk before kidnapping Alisha and killing both her and Nikki when Nikki accidentally teleports into the room he was hloding Alisha hostage in. When Nathan goes to confront Brian, he wraps the mozzarella Nathan had on his pizza around his central cortex to render him vegetative before resorting to stabbing Curtis when the latter reveals himself to be lactose intolerant.
  • Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams' "Real Life": In the real world, Colin is a psychopathic crime lord who in the past carried out a horrific massacre that claimed at least 15 police lives and seriously traumatized the heroine Sarah. Although he was easily caught when he suggested to his colleagues to attack the city hall with nuclear weapons, his actions ruin Sarah's life, driving her into a coma and dooming her to eternal suffering.
  • "Triumph": Oleg Nikiforov is a seemingly unassuming young man from a family of rich businessmen who defrauds multiple people out of money and frames his uncle for it. Afraid of getting sued by his uncle, Oleg decides to kill both the latter and Oleg's own father. Oleg manipulates party organizer Krasikov into filling balloons with sarin, killing the intended victims and 22 more people at a birthday party. Oleg has one of his fraud victims, Zudin, frame and kill Krasikov, and then murders Zudin himself. Oleg frames his mentally disabled sister Maryana as the crimes' mastermind, planning to get her institutionalized and mooch off of her inheritance forever.
  • Daring Mystery Comics issue #8 has two Nazi villains during World War II:
    • "Terror Reigns On the High Seas": Captain Erich Von Wolff is a Nazi U-Boat commander nicknamed "the Barracuda" for his wanton cruelty. A proud servant of Adolf Hitler, Von Wolff makes it his personal mission to kill as many people as he can, downing any vessels he comes across and taking delight in the ensuing death toll. Men, women, elderly, and infants are all victims to Von Wolff, who sees them as nothing but "insects" to be crushed, and in one scene he happily reminisces of a time he watched a woman and her baby drown to death after one of his attacks. Even when survivors try to surrender, Von Wolff eagerly mows them down with gunfire, unless he decides that feeding them to nearby sharks will be more entertaining.
    • "Hypnotized Ghosts": Dr. Eric Karlin is a Nazi hypnotist who brainwashes people into becoming his slaves, using them to steal Nazi gold stashed away in American banks. Karlin is also a sadistic Serial Killer who kidnaps American citizens, melts them alive in a giant acid vat, and then jars up their gelatinous remains so he can keep them as trophies. By the time the Blue Diamond dunks the Nazi screaming into his own acid vat, he sees Karlin has filled up an entire shelf with these jars.
  • Revelation & Revolution:
    • Skeletor was once Keldor, the older half-brother of Randor who was denied the throne because his mother was Gar. Joining the Horde when it invaded Eternia, he was given a staff that melted off his face while Hordak implanted false memories in his head. Abandoned after the Horde was driven off Eternia, Skeletor led numerous campaigns to overcome the power of Castle Grayskull and Eternia, culminating in an assault that nearly leads to him annihilating the entire universe. After his seeming death, Skeletor returns after feeding off the life force of Evil-Lyn, using her as nothing more than a tool to seize control of Grayskull's power. Making himself a God and killing the Sorceress, Skeletor attempts to turn all of Eternia into his undead slaves after killing them, damning two of He-Man's allies to Subternia for spite. After Evil-Lyn steals his power, Skeletor turns on the heroes just so he can kill He-Man before existence ends. After Motherboard recruits him back into the Horde, Skeletor disguises himself as Keldor and manipulates Prince Adam into giving him the crown, using his position to infect the people of Eternia with the Horde's techno virus. Recovering his memories, Skeletor almost kills Hordak and starts plotting to turn the entire universe into copies of himself using a combination of the techno virus and magic. Skeletor faces He-Man again and tries to damn his brother's soul to Subternia.
    • Revolution only: Hordak is the general of the Horde who leads their vile forces across the universe. Under Hordak's command, genocide and enslavement are committed across numerous worlds. While leading an assault on Eternia many years ago before being driven away, Hordak also corrupted Prince Keldor into a twisted madman. Having sent Motherboard to Eternia, Hordak uses her to painfully cyber-convert its inhabitants to become his slaves, allowing him an easy invasion to add Eternia as another planet to his list of conquered worlds.
  • Warriors of Stone: The advisor to the mayor of Garmadon City, aware of the truth behind the stone plague, manipulates the mayor into not evacuating their people so they can be transformed into rock beings. Remaining the only one to retain his memories and agency, the advisor intends to spread the curse as far and wide as he can, then lead his army to destroy every other soul until the only life left is stone.
  • 1980 manhua: Tarkin is the tyrannical leader of the Galactic Empire who is hellbent on taking over the entire galaxy, crushing any opposition on the planets he has conquered. Upon capturing Leia, Tarkin would proceed to torture her endlessly, requesting information on the rebel base, but after she refused, he would use the Death Star to destroy her home planet of Alderaan in a fit of pure rage. After locating the rebels on Yavin, Tarkin prepares to use the Death Star once again to completely decimate the planet, planning to crush the rebellion for good.
  • Raji: An Ancient Epic: Mahabalasura is a wicked Mystic who was made an outcast by his people—aware of his evil—when he tried to lead them. Becoming a demon, Mahabalasura manipulates Lord Brahma into giving him power which he uses to lead the demons to wreak havoc on Earth until he is sealed away by Lord Shiva for killing Bhoomi Devi. Returning from his imprisonment, Mahabalasura unleashes his brethren onto humanity and has them kidnap countless children, having them killed if they aren't pure before they find Golu. Mahabalasura then travels to his homeland, killing almost everyone there by turning them into stone and forcing the Mystic chief to give him a powerful scroll. Encountering Golu's sister, Raji, Mahabalasura distracts her in their final clash before going to the Gates of Devalok and using Golu and his scroll to open them so he may enter the realm of the gods and kill everyone there.
  • Zed_Technician games, by release date:
    • Midnight Maid Night: Jeremiah Vermander is the former head of the corrupt Vermander family. Known for being a very cruel and selfish man, Jeremiah tended to burn his servants alive if they prepared a bad meal for him. When the blizzard hit the city and his newspaper couldn't be delivered to him, Jeremiah sent his faithful servant, Cornelius, outside to go get it, not even allowing him to wear a winter coat, which resulted in Cornelius freezing to death. Discovering that his son, Joseph, entered a relationship with a servant, Jeremiah brutally murdered her and shoved her corpse beneath the floors of the mansion. When Joseph started to help the poor after his death, Jeremiah came back as a ghost and murdered him, resulting in the ghosts of his son, his son's lover, and Cornelius being unable to rest, and them haunting the mansion. When the Midnight Maids come to clean his mansion for the new owner, Jeremiah tries to hunt them down.
    • Artifacts and Antiquity: Sekhmet is a violent Egyptian deity who, alongside Thoth—who unlike Sekhmet is a Graceful Loser—has destroyed and recreated humanity numerous times for fun. When the other gods declare they will destroy humanity unless seven artifacts are returned to them, Sekhmet sends her minions to stop Gracie and the others from gathering the artifacts and saving humanity. When the artifacts are gathered, Sekhmet has her servants attempt to kill Gracie and her coworkers as revenge for besting her.

Ah... shoot. Could've sworn it was coming out in March. EDIT: It is coming out in March... at least in most places. March 27th internationally, and March 29th in the United States.

And while the discussion date falls in April the reservation can be made 1 month in advance. So I just have to wait a few weeks.

Found and removed this on Creepshow S 1 E 12 By The Silver Water Of Lake Champlain.

  • Complete Monster: Chet, a sadistic 'Nam veteran who got together with Leigh to drink away the insurance payout she got when her late husband, who he callously mocks, died in the midst of his pursuit of Champ. He's also violently abusive towards Thomas and Rose (being so threatening to the former because he's hinted to be sexually attracted to the latter), going so far as to kill them both when they stop him from selfishly stealing Rose's proof of Champ's dead baby for himself.

Haven't seen the episode, but while Chet sounds nasty, as far as I can find he wasn’t brought up on any thread.

  • Tekken series:
    • Azazel the Rectifier, the "original Devil", is an ancient demon who was sealed away by ancient people from the East after controlling mankind for centuries. Empowering humans to serve him, Azazel is the source of the "Devil Gene" and thus the true source for all the evil the Mishimas have wrought. To escape confinement, Azazel tries to tempt Jin Kazama to spread war and conflict to fuel his escape. Confronted by Lars in his temple, Azazel claims mankind is bound to him and later proclaims that he is greater than any being on Earth before attempting to destroy the world. Revived by Kazuya Mishima in Tekken 8, Azazel tries to "reward" him by attempting to consume Kazuya.

Thanks to mir for leaving this to me. Azazel will be moved to the top of the tree, above Bryan.

I also found and removed this from Creepshow Twittering From The Circus Of The Dead

  • Complete Monster: The staff of the titular circus, who use the zombies at their disposal to amuse themselves by horribly killing them and siccing them on what few audience members show up at their shows. They also kidnap a random woman from their audiences and deem her the latest ringmistress, forcing her to fight for her life against the zombies for their sick pleasures.

Might be worth checking to see if anymore of these were added, considering that's two unauthorized examples form the same series.

I stumbled across an example on YMMV.Stephanie Plum that looked unapproved due to its use of Word Cruft. It seems like the example actually was approved, but was later edited without consensus. The unapproved sections (which aren't on Monster.Literature N To S) are in bold:

  • Complete Monster: Benito Ramirez is a violent boxer who absolutely loves to torture, rape, and mutilate women both because he can, and because he likes to make a point that he's so powerful that he can do whatever he wants, to whomever he wants, whenever he wants. In the first book, One For The Money, he stalks Stephanie, even, at one point, calling her in the middle of the night and leaving a taunting voicemail that's being recorded as he assaults a pleading, screaming woman. Later, he rapes and brutalizes Lula, a prostitute whom Stephanie had spoken to about Ramirez earlier that day, and leaves her bloody, unconscious, naked body tied up on Stephanie's balcony. Worst of all, he's considered a hero in the Burg (Local kid makes it big!), and almost everyone in the area either refuses to believe how bad he is, or downplays his actions. Pretty much a woman's most horrible nightmare. In the fifth book, High Five, he goes on parole claiming to having reformed, only to resume stalking Stephanie and trying to break into her apartment, now having added religion to his motivation to attack her, making him even scarier and less capable of being reasoned with.

I'm not familiar with this series, but those additions look unnecessary to me. Maybe something about him being considered a local hero could be potholed to Villain with Good Publicity somewhere, but that might just make the example more bloated when it's already quite long.

Ok the date for is to talk about Suicide Sqaud Kill the Justice League is here and as of now no one counts. Brainiac should in theory count given he absolutely blows the heinous standard of the Arkhamverse out of the water with him killing millions in Metropolis, brainwashing the League, and trying to wipe out all life on earth to make it more like his him planet and reveals he plans on doing this to every universe. The problem? The Branaic we see is not the only one leading the multiversal conquest, there are 13 Brainiacs all working together who basically commit all the same crimes and there is no clear leader of this group meaning they all fail to each other. In theory in future updates we found learn more but as of now all the Brainiacs are a no go until we learn more about them

Now the real reason we are here is to talk about how this game affects current C Ms in the Arkhamverse. Now thankfully given Brainiac is leaps and bounds above every other Arkhamverse villains in scope and resources heinousness is not an issue. I am mainly talking about the returning Penguin and Riddler. Riddler doesn’t really do anything beyond force the Sqaud ti solve his riddles and doesn’t do anything to compromise his CM status as while he is still kinda of pathetic the Squad and narrative treat him as a threat

Arkhamverse Penguin on the other hand I am actually advocating we cut. While him helping the Squad is not redeeming as he was forced to via a nano bomb in the head his actual issue is being a butt monkey. The Squad practically treat him like a punching bag there is even a gag where Penguin tries to run away and they have Waller shock him till he is unconscious only to have the Squad keep having Walker shock him by falsely saying he his still running, making him again a punching bag. And later on we see him getting utterly bullied by child Ivy and kicked around to the point he asks Harely to kill him then have to put up with Child Ivy’s antics.

This man is no longer treated as an actual threat or vile person and just comic relief. and given City and Knight already had scenes of him being played for laugh based off how pathetic it is I can not see us keeping him and I call for a cut

Wouldn’t exactly same as Ceaser Clown

It’s more that he had moments before of being played as a joke but not it’s gotten to a point where he isn’t taken seriously at all

A bit different from Ceaser who stopped being taken seriously the second he was defeated

Either way a cut

Cut him, I guess. Yet another instance of “lol wacky humor” undercutting what should be a serious villain, if you ask me.

Also, just gonna ask one more time because I never got any replies; the coach from The Karaoke was an Echidna EP and was never formally cut; I vouched for him, but one troper said that wasn’t enough and someone had to make an EP. I can do so real quick, but does he need to be cut? Because he’s still up.

[up]Yes, you need to offer it. The point is not so much that the information may be inaccurate (although this also exists), but that this is plagiarism and a normal, correct EP is needed. Thanks for your commitment, but still need to make an offer. All candidates that matter should get re-offered as in the case of Vanitas and the Roblox villain.

One might ask, who was the participant who said that this was not enough? Just curious.

And honestly...I'm tired of all these examples of this plagiaristic user still remaining on the page and not removed. They need to be removed. And although I personally did not want to delete the examples at first for my own reasons, it seems that no one is going to do this. In this case, I will simply remove all these examples once and for all and only allow them to be added again after they receive a good faith re-offer.
