Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

I voted to keep Cinder last time, but honestly, after thinking about it, I am switching to a cut.

One of the arguments which was used was that Arthur called out her FE which is what convinced me to vote keep last time... but that's not entirely true. I watched the scene and Arthur (who is a fellow CM and shows absolutely no moral revulsion at Cinder's actions) just calls her out for being stupid and that she is not entitled to power just because she has suffered in the past and that she needs to be smart about acquiring power. Which means he has absolutely no problem with her committing atrocities as long as she is doing it in a smart way. This is not the same as Woody calling out Lotso's Freudian Excuse out of moral reasons. And I would like to add that during that scene, when Arthur mentions her FE, Cinder receives flashbacks of her abuse which clearly traumatize her and she lets go of Arthur and starts crying due to remembering her abuse which seems to be played for sympathy.

Also, one of the people who have worked on the show has specifically stated that the episode was meant to make people feel sorry for Cinder but not make her too sympathetic. I know we usually don't take Word of God into account but this shows that the intention behind this decision wasn't for her FE to be seen as entirely subverted even if he mentions they didn't want to make her too sympathetic.

Considering how badly she seems to be affected by her past even in the present, I don't think we should keep her if we deem characters like Atrocitus, Junior, Mick Taylor, Luca Blight and Koba (some of which have done worse than Cinder) to be too tragic to qualify as C Ms. If she somehow subverts her Freudian Excuse later, we can always restore her write-up.

Maybe not make a thing for them 2 specifically but more of a "if a characters arc is still continuing, don't bring them up unless there's an adamant mitigating factor".

Not familiar with the work but say Akainu, people were leery on him, then lo and behold when the series continued, got a definitive reason for him to be cut over say people bringing up any "possible" issues despite said Characters arc continuing.

I say keep and just wait and see on her, we'd already have a lengthy discussion on it and we'd agreed to wait on her until something new comes up and how her backstory isn't mitigating and honestly in agreement.

I believe we settled on cutting Caesar Clown from One Piece.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

I was thinking of these two. I can't remember if we decided to cut Caesar.

Yeah. It seems like a couple of people voted to keep it, but overall the majority voted to cut it. Also, Dark Koutei and T'Ket in general, they unanimously voted for deletions. Only Wat Tambor abstained from Dark Koutei, but overall they were both unanimously voted for cuts.

[up]Thank you for paying attention to them.

I'd say wait and see on Cinder. On one hand, she does have a tragic backstory that motivates her and is meant to evoke some sympathy. However she otherwise lacks notable redeeming qualities and is very unrepentant about her crimes. She might be redeemed in a future season but that's unlikely. Over all I'm unsure if she's already a cut.

Since he's been brought up, I'm leaning on cutting Caesar Clown. While his actions are definitely heinous, he's treated as a bit of a joke after his defeat. He also shares much of his niche (sadistic yet prideful Mad Scientist who produces bio-weapons and is a Bad Boss) with a later and more powerful villain, Queen (who nobody's proposed yet). His only other niche (targeting children with his crimes) isn't unique to him either (I believe the Celestial Dragons harm kids for their own amusement). He's fairly weak in a fight but has a good amount of resources.

Marsh removes Lee Christmas from the mission; makes it so the other Expendables are captured; fatally shoots one of his own men for questioning him; arranges for himself to be "captured" by Rahmat so that his former partner can be exchanged—allowing Marsh to kill said partner—and, finally, when he and Christmas remain, offers a fair fight before pulling a gun and attempting to kill Christmas.

Bound within his pit, Malivore ruled his Pocket Dimension where his victims rot in darkness and isolation, a frequent punishment he'd use on Clarke. Malivore forcibly impregnated a woman to conceive to his desired vessel, Landon Kirby. Malivore allows numerous monsters to be freed to retrieve the artifacts that bind him, find Landon, and eventually Cleo. Using hollow expressions of mercy and freedom, Malivore soon takes over Landon, cruelly tormenting his friends within his mindscape. Capturing Cleo, Malivore makes her witness her family burning eternally for turning against him, and begins infecting Mystic Falls with his essence, intending to infect the world until all life is an extension of himself. Facing Hope Mikaelson, Malivore tries swapping places with Landon to escape, with Hope being forced to kill Landon in order to destroy Malivore for good.
    • Season 4: The Father of the Gods, nicknamed "Ken" and heavily implied to be Zeus himself, is an arrogant and bloodthirsty deity who brought mass destruction and war to the world, when he and his family conquered it in the ancient past. So great was the death toll of his wars, they flooded the world of Limbo with lost souls; when his sister tried to help them find peace, Ken punished her by forcing her to work from limbo for all time, unable to return home. To punish his son "Ben" for bringing magic into the world, Ken has Ben bound to a rock, and gruesomely eaten alive by monsters each day for thousands of years, giving him a Healing Factor to prevent Ben from dying. Awakened in the modern day, Ken intends to conquer the world once more, challenging Hope Mikaelson for being such a powerful creature. To this end, Ken attempts to wipe out the Salvatore Academy; forces his daughter to make a weapon to kill Hope, under threats and torture; forces the werewolves to transform and attack their allies; and discards Aurora after sending her into fighting Hope in his place, and mortally wounding her.
  • Douglas Coe, "The Great Teacher", is a fundamentalist preacher hell-bent on spreading his Evangelical Christianity across the United States at all costs. Working behind President Donald Rumsfeld, Coe helps remove all rivals to their power before having Rumsfeld impeached and arrested after deciding his political use is done. Turning Pat Robinson into his next pawn with Robinson's 1988 victory, Coe continues to remain the true power behind the country and even orders the destruction of the Capitol when Congress refuses to cooperate with Coe's increasingly oppressive regime. Forming the "Christian States of America", Coe begins having political dissidents rounded up and marks non-Evangelical Christians and "degenerates" such as homosexuals and drug addicts for death. To consolidate power over the rest of the country, Coe begins unleashing nuclear weapons on resisting states and continues raining them down on Florida to hold off an invasion from Cuba, switching to chemical and biological weapons when nuclear stockpiles run low.

I don't think it's necessary tbh. ACW's been posting the batches as a courtesy to pre-emptively show people what will be going up for the week for sure and much like effort posts, it'll just be a longer one. I don't see the issue with how he's been posting these.

Yeah, there's no real way to folderize it.

Could anyone provide feedback on this post?

[down] & [down][down] Thanks for the feedback! Necessary or not, I don't think their presence hurts the writeups in any way.

[up][up]Unsure if that's necessary.

[up][up] Doesn't hurt them, but then the entries have excessive potholes.

Though honestly, it may be time for theme parks to get their own page.

I think ACW's suggestion works.

Also looking over Silent Hill I think we can flesh out the premier monster a bit. From:

  • Dahlia Gillespie is the head of a cult known as the Sect of the Holy Woman. Starting a drug trade, Dahlia sells a hallucinogen made from a local plant named White Claudia to the tourists, killing the anti-drug mayor and the narcotics officer Gucci in the process. Desiring to gain personal power by summoning God, Dahlia kidnaps and attempts to impregnate several young girls with the God, which leads to their deaths. After finding out that her 7-year-old daughter Alessa had vast mental powers, Dahlia decided to perform the impregnation ritual on Alessa. As a result of this, Alessa's soul was split in 2 halves. Dahlia then cast a spell, keeping one half of Alessa alive and in extreme pain, not allowing her burns to heal. Dahlia's intention was for the other half to subconsciously feel Alessa's pain, and come back to Silent Hill, where the soul would be reunited. Seven years later, Dahlia tricks the first game's protagonist Harry Mason into helping her to complete the ritual.

To:

  • Dahlia Gillespie is the high priestess of the sinister Order's Sect of the Holy Woman. To make her followers more malleable to her apocalyptic goals, Dahlia has the hallucinogenic drug PTV distributed amongst them, uncaring for its dangerous side effects and has any officials investigating her killed. Intent on summoning the God worshipped by the Order to empower herself in the new world even as it devastates the planet, Dahlia has a series of girls kidnapped and impregnated by the supernatural being, with each attempt leading to the young children dying. Deciding to attempt the ritual with her own psychic daughter Alessa, Dahlia's violation leads to Alessa nearly burning to death, only kept alive by her powers. When Alessa splits her own soul to allow part of herself a happy life, Dahlia keeps Alessa's physical body in immobile agony within Silent Hill's hospital for seven years. Upon Alessa's other half Cheryl Mason being drawn back to the town, Dahlia manipulates Harry, Cheryl's loving adoptive father, into helping her perform the ritual to usher the Order's God into reality. With no interest in the salvation some Order members desire and cruel beyond measure, Dahlia proves to be far more evil force than any of the monsters lurking within the cursed town.

Thoughts?

Also there's a capitalization error in Christabella's quote if you'd like to fix that ACW or open the sandbox so I can?

By the way. From Moriarty the Patriot. The official manga translation calls him Charles Baskervilles. Mind changing it.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."

Moires Baskervilles. Guess they wanted to go with an actual British first name in the translation

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
