Old Complete Monster cleanup thread
Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread
.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here
) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread
.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread
, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread
. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.
Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

So I have two different rewrites I want to do. First is Eric as I know the idea of rewriting his entry came up so I decided to do it.
Original:
- Cliffhanger: Eric Qualen is an ex-federal agent turned international terrorist who attempts to steal $100 million, leading to the deaths of three agents and one pilot, and has no problem killing anyone who stands in his way, even his own men. After he loses the three cases full of money and his plane crashes, he takes the mountain guides Gabriel "Gabe" Walker and his friend Hal Tucker as hostages so they can help him find the cases. When he and his henchmen locate the first case, Qualen takes Walker's coat off to make sure he won't escape, thus making him almost freeze to death. He eventually decides to kill him anyway once he comes back. When two teenagers spot him, Qualen has his men murder them, simply commenting in a sadistic tone "Sue me" when Tucker calls him out. Qualen later kills his lover, informing her that true love is sacrifice. He plans on killing Tucker when he is no longer needed and later kidnaps Walker's girlfriend Jesse, threatening to drop her in the ravines if Walker won't give him the case. During the final fight on the helicopter, hanging on a deep chasm, Qualen has a Villainous Breakdown and attempts to make the helicopter fall, taking Walker with him.
Rewrite:
- Cliffhanger: Eric Qualen is an agent turned infamous terrorist defined by sadistic cruelty. Trying to steal $100 million, killing three agents and one pilot, and casually tossing an injured minion off his plane, he loses three cases full of money and crashes his plane into a mountain. Taking Gabriel "Gabe" Walker and his friend Hal Tucker as hostages to help him find the cases, Qualen tries making Walker freeze to death by removing his coat and plans to kill him once he comes back. Qualen has his men try to murder two teenagers who accidentally stumble upon him, succeeding in killing one and mocking Tucker about it. Qualen coldly shoots his lover and pilot Kristel to ensure that he'll be the only person alive to pilot the helicopter to safety, planning on killing Tucker as well, and later kidnaps Walker's girlfriend Jesse to drop her in the ravines if Walker won't give him the case. When the helicopter hangs on a deep chasm, Qualen attempts to make the helicopter fall to take Walker with him.
Next one. From the original No Contest film as the current writeup doesn't include some of Oz's really terrible stuff.
Original:
- Original 1995 film: "Oz", real name Raymond Brice, is a former drug lord out for revenge on Senator Donald Wilson, his former partner who sold him out to the police. Attacking a beauty pageant Candy, Wilson's daughter, is entered in Oz's men massacre the staff, Oz himself killing the pageant queen before taking the other contestants hostage. Fitting the hostages with explosives, Oz laughs when a terrified girl tries to run and is blown apart. When one of Oz's men is seduced by a captive and she escapes, Oz sadistically tortures him before killing him. Even after Senator Wilson pays him his demanded ransom money, Oz still spitefully tries to kill Candy.
Current:
- Original 1995 film: "Oz", real name Raymond Brice, is a former drug lord out for revenge on Senator Donald Wilson, his former partner who sold him out to the police. Attacking a beauty pageant, Oz's men massacre the staff, Oz himself kills the pageant queen before taking the other contestants hostage. Fitting the hostages with explosives, Oz plays a card game with the hostages where the lowest scoring player gets killed next and forces the host to read a script, saying if she deviates he'll get to kill a hostage. Oz then laughs when a terrified girl tries to run and is blown apart. When one of Oz's men is seduced by a captive and allows her to escape, Oz sadistically tortures him before killing him. Oz threatens to skin Miss Canada alive, mutilate Candy's face, and later orders his remaining henchmen to kill the hostages except for Candy. Even after Senator Wilson pays him his demanded ransom money, Oz still spitefully tries to kill Candy to satisfy his lust for bloodshed.
I don't know if this is the right place to bring it up, but on Characters.Sonic The Hedgehog Modern Era Antagonists 1, Black Doom's entry for The Sociopath is lifted entirely from his CM entry. Is it okay if I remove it for now?
Out of curiousity, with works that share universes (like a manga adaptation of a video game) does the villain have to meet the manga's heinous standard or the series' HS? Like suppose Zant from the Manga was different enough from his Video game counterpart to warrant discussion and his own entry. Would he have to compete with the existing Manga examples like Manga!Ganondorf or would he have to match Demise/Ghirahim in heinousness? I'm guessing it's the former as the latter is responsible for everything bad in the series, like everything due to creating Ganon.

@Agentofchaos Just as a preface, do quotes have to go through the edit requests thread, or can they be added to the sandbox on their own merits if they're good enough; just with the caveat of potentially being evaluated by this thread if they fall short?
Orcus on His Throne will always be my pet peeve. Is anyone here familiar with Wolf Creek? I was going through Mick Taylor's character folder on Wolf Creek, and it has the following entry:
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: His sister, his mother and his eventual girlfriend. Sadly, none of them are still around.
His folder also states that he "[killed] his mother probably due to a warped sense of wanting to do right by her and end the misery" (IDK what this is meant to mean), and that while he killed his sister by accident, he had a My God, What Have I Done? reaction. His folder doesn't mention anything about his girlfriend, as far as I can find. The rest of his folder displays him as an easy keeper, but I don't know if this part is misuse or legit.
I tried looking for an EP, and while I was able to find the initial writeup
from April 2014, I couldn't find the EP
EDIT: Found the EP
. It was written before the books came out

This is what I found about his girlfriend on the Horror Films wiki.
The circumstances of his Mother and sister’s deaths.:
One day, Mick and his sister were at a water hole, a man came up to them and offered them chocolate. Mick didn't trust him and told him to leave. Mick's sister wanted the chocolate, so Mick told her they had to leave. When Mick's sister refused to leave, he pushed her, but harder than he intended, and sent her rolling down a hill to her death. Mick convinced himself it was the man who killed her, and told his father the fake story. Jim murdered the innocent man in vigilante justice. Mick remembered what really happened, and decided to leave home before his father found out. Jim found out and prepared to kill his son. But Mick ran away from home before he could do so, and lived off of rats he killed in the outback.
One day, Mick returned to his home and killed both his parents, despite the fact that his mother loved him. Mick lied that the man he said killed his sister (who no one knew was dead) had returned and killed his parents. Mick adopted the name of his best friend Eddy Taylor
And of his girlfriend’s death.

Not only that, the co-writer of BOTH novels is the same guy (Greg McLean) who basically created the franchise.
Now, whether he actually loved them, I don't know. But the novels are indeed probably canon.
Though from his novel entry...
- "Mick tied up his girlfriend Rose and used her as rape bait to lure the killers into a trap..."
Though killing his sister...that might be mitigating.

I personally feel the Katz quote is simple but sadistic enough. D'Arby's quote is fine as well. Fusilli's quote can definitely go.
