It may look like Earth. But they are on Counter-Earth.

Hmm.

They did say this was the end of this incarnation of the Guardians, and this trailer certainly gives that impression.

The last hurrah for the Avengers of Space.

[up][up][up] Counter-Earth? Are Venom and Carnage gonna show up to do very-unlike Venom and Carnage things?

Interesting to me that this seems to be taking the exact opposite approach to Love & Thunder - L&T doubled down on the wackiness and jokes, GOTG 3 seems to be aiming for a more sombre tone (though not entirely humourless).

Looks like Rocket is the secondary protagonist/Lancer of the team now.

Interesting that this is also taking greater influence from the Dn A Guardians run.

Not just from the uniforms but Quill being a more proactive defender of the galaxy and Rocket mellowing into the lancer, more dependable guy as he was in that run. Quill and Rocket were actually quite a close duo, with Rocket having the highest respect for Quill even in his worse moments.

Should be quite something. Very curious how Adam Warlock will be handled, we only saw very little of him in the trailer.

[up][up] Huh I'm reminded the Dark Ages comic also had them fuse.

[up][up][up]How Was that allowed on tv when the previous Spider-Man show couldn't have him punch people or feature realistic firearms?

I'm seeing very little difference in the tone compared to previous movies but we'll see how the movie handles things.

I hope they don't kill off Rocket. The trailer seems to setting up major Death Flags in general, but his were the most in your face.

Think it's Drax tbh who bites it. Mantis' isn't really close to Rocket to have that reaction.

I think Rocket and Groot will make it. Gunn said thus was the last hurrah for this version of the Gaurdians so I except mass death here and for those two to make it and be mentors to the next Gen. Everyone else though.

Considering the scene with the otter, it makes sense for Rocket to simply retire and settle down to a life of peace

Drax meanwhile doesn't really have anything to live for so dying a warrior's death is pretty much the way he was always gonna go out

If we're looking at it from the perspective of who's going to stick around for future installments of the franchise, I think Rocket and Groot have the best odds of survival. Going back to the previous discussion about live-action actors leaving and taking their characters with them, it's worth noting that Rocket and Groot are voice-acted, not live-acted.

Even if Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel leave the franchise, they're easier to recast. You don't have to deal with trying to present a new face to the audience.

Personally, if someone is going to die, my money's on Quill. He's basically the main character of the Guardians franchise. If this is to be the Guardians' last hurrah, then Quill's the one who needs to be resolved in such a fashion that it fully explains why he is not going to continue to have any further epic cinematic adventures.

The rest of the cast can filter off to go make appearances in other things, but Quill needs an ending to put this film franchise to rest. That means he either has to die or retire. And, uh, his Pepper Potts/Peggy Carter died in Infinity War, so retirement seems unlikely.

I still remember back in 2017-2019, Nebula, War Machine, and Hawkeye were treated as the obvious "red shirts."

They also "killed off" Groot already and are unlikely to pull the same trick again.

[up][up][up] It's "retire", if it's either of those. The movies have barely nudged him out of being an emotionally-stunted manchild; it will be weird if Vol. 3 has to do the legwork for that and then just kills him off.

The trailer does, admittedly, give me some pretty strong Kill Em All vibes, however.

I'm curious how they'll handle the Peter/Gamora relationship in this film. I think it might be interesting if part of Quill's arc is him realizing that this Gamora is not the one he fell in love with and ultimately learning that he needs to let her make her own decisions and finally let her go.

diddyknux (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)
#20: Dec 4th 2022 at 8:29:03 PM

I think that's exactly what his arc should be. As a parallel of the fact that he holds on to all this nostalgia for when he was a kid on earth (hence the man childness) and learning to let go of that as well.

He needs to let go of The Hoff.

[up][up] I hope it goes that route, too. If the old and new Gamora are too interchangeable, then there wouldn’t be any sense of meaningful loss. This wouldn’t be the only way to convey that, but it feels like the most effective.

A nice twist would be for Gamora to end up asking what the hell did Peter see in her?

  • Nebula (confused) : I think you asked your question backwards.
  • Gamora: No, I said it right, I mean I'm a very violent person, and most likely I'll try to threaten him the first time he tries to kiss me.

I think that was a reference to her pulling a knife on him in the first movie after he tried to kiss her.

Personally, I'd find it most interesting if they reversed what I sort of expect and instead of having Nebula/Peter chasing Gamora, have them accept she's dead and have her be the one trying to figure out what the hell happened to the other version of herself and trying to force her way into the lives of those who are mourning (Peter) or have basically completed five years of mourning (Nebula) to get the answers she needs.
