To-do list:

  • Since Names The Same is now a disambiguation page, wicks fitting another page should be moved there, while other wicks should be removed.

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by Berrenta.

This is one of the most used (and possibly abused) tropes that we have on the wiki. According to the laconic, the trope is about more than two characters from different works sharing a name. That is the first red flag, as some names are rather common. Some more red flags came up in the wick check as well as a skim through first-level bullets.

For the wick check done by Yindee, who volunteered to help with this part, the results are as follows:

  • Similarity noted: 20/96; 20.9%
  • Just name: 8/96; 8.3%
  • Similarly Named Works: 13/96; 13.5%
  • IU confusion: 5/95; 5.2%
  • One-Steve Limit: 13/96; 13.5%
  • Creator names: 13/96; 13.5%
  • Shares with irl: 10/96; 10.4%
  • Same-named roles: 2/96; 2.1%
  • Other: 12/96; 12.5%

Okay, we're seeing overlap with other tropes here. As for the on-page check done by me, the percentage results of potentially valid examples are as follows:

  • Real v Fictional: 31/627 = 4.9%
  • Cross Media: (115 to 141)/1350 = 8.5% to 10.4%
  • Anime and Manga: (36 to 43)/163 = 22% to 26.4%
  • Comics: (17 to 38)/110 = 15.5% to 34.5%
  • Fairy Tales: (0 to 1)/11 = 0% to 9.1%
  • Film: (7 to 8)/33 = 21.2% to 24.2%
  • Literature: (9 to 15)/33 = 27.2% to 45.5%
  • Live Action TV: (12 to 20)/146 = 8.2% to 13.7%
  • Music: (84 to 122)/647 = 13% to 18.9%
  • Pro Wrestling: (10 to 13)/47 = 21.2% to 27.7%
  • Radio: 3/7 = 42.9%
  • Theatre: (2 to 4)/10 = 20% to 40%
  • Video Games: (86 to 131)/507 = 17% to 25.8%
  • Webcomics: (0 to 3)/12 = 0% to 25%
  • Web Original: (7 to 8)/14 = 50% to 57.1%
  • Western Animation: (53 to 77)/344 = 15.4% to 22.4%
  • Real Life: (237 to 389)/1155 = 20.5% to 33.7%
  • Other: (3 to 4)/5 = 60% to 80%

Categories in green on the check are for entries that I feel are noteworthy. These include similarities, lampshades, instances that caused legal disputes, etc. Categories in yellow are for those that could potentially be noteworthy. These include names recycled by the creator, blood relatives, geography (RL only), and so on.

My proposals:
  • Restrict to examples in which the characters do have something in common. That will prompt a rename. Same Name Similar Background, maybe?
  • Create a new trivia item for characters who share a name with another from another work the creator has done. Possible name would be Creator Recycled Name, although we can look into other options.
  • Make a separate trope for In-Universe name confusion. If there's not enough, that will need a merge with One-Steve Limit instead.
  • For cases in which a character shares a name with a RL person, restrict to gags only. Due to the low number that would qualify, that would need to go elsewhere.
  • Turn Names The Same into a disambiguation between One-Steve Limit, Similarly Named Works, and any new tropes we make here. Other tropes can also be considered.

Wick check:

Wick/on-page check for Names The Same

The problem: Names The Same has constantly seen use in which characters with almost nothing in common merely share a name. There were other cases in which Similarly Named Works would fit better.

There will be two different checks: a normal wick check and a skim through on-page examples.

Wicks: 86/86

Examples: 96

  • Similarity noted: 20/96; 20.9%
  • Just name: 8/96; 8.3%

  • IU confusion: 5/95; 5.2%
  • One-Steve Limit: 13/96; 13.5%
  • Creator names: 13/96; 13.5%

  1. Why was it so short-lived? Producers rigged the game in favor of certain contestants, a deal with WWE that would've seen more talent cast as "manhunters" fell through, and the show was filmed in California instead of Hawaii, as advertised.

  10. Trivia.Super Smash Bros: both OSL and NTS because massive crossover
    • Several jokes have been made about there being two Roys in the series; Roy from Fire Emblem and Roy Koopa. Then the former was revealed as Downloadable Content for 3DS/Wii U, allowing the two to appear at the same time. They still have their own announcer clips (FE!Roy's is slightly triumphant, Roy Koopa's is a bit more sinister), and the promotional material has the Young Lion joyfully watch Roy Koopa fall into lava, although they later make up in the 3DS iteration, where Roy (Koopa) gives the Other Roy a ride in his Koopa Kart. If you want to be technical, there's also Snake's Mission Control Roy Campbell, commonly known as "Colonel", who appears in the Codec conversations in Brawl and Ultimate, along with having a Spirit in the latter game.

With Mega Man in the fourth game onwards, there's a Star Man from his series, but there's no reference or appearance from him.
  11. YMMV.Once Upon A Time S 4 E 11 Heroes And Villains: Fridge Brilliance: Ursula clearly got some form of happy ending for herself - as she was worshipped as a benevolent sea goddess by the people of Eric's kingdom before the Dark Curse. Since Rumple refers to her as just "the sea-witch", she's probably not actually a real goddess; the mermaids and citizens just think she is. Turns out she isn't even that; just a witch with the same name.

    • Please don't confuse the tall, gray Starman from Earth Bound with the cape-wearing, star-shaped enemy from Kirby, or the bouncing invincibility item from Super Mario Bros.. In PAL regions, the latter is known as the Super Star, avoiding the confusion. With Mega Man in the fourth game onwards, there's a Star Man from his series, but there's no reference or appearance from him.

The one thing I've always wanted with Names The Same is to preserve the "cross media" pages as JFF, because those ones are basically just joke pages and I don't know if it's worth tossing them even if the rest of the trope burns. Like, reading through them I don't think they're taken seriously at all, and would fit in as JFF pages without changing anything.

As for the actual trope, ehh... I'm not really crazy about any of the proposed retools, which means I might go for the disambig by default unless more ideas come forth.

Edit: And to be clear, my JFF idea is only for the cross media subpages, not the rest of it.

Neglected to mention that I'm not in favor of any of the redefinition options due to a lack of wicks for them, compared to the combined total of the ones in other categories (including ones that belong under Similarly Named Works or One-Steve Limit instead).

Just noticed a typo that I have left behind when I drafted this. Whoops!

Anyways, I'm kinda iffy on the JFF proposal, hence why I did not pitch it. What prompted the TRS thread was one of the Cross Media pages triggering the overly-long page warning, which may have been caused by common names that happen to be shared. If we do a JFF page, it's bound to happen again.

[up][up][up]Considering how "too long" warnings have appeared on other JFF pages, I'm not surprised that a list of assorted names triggered such warnings, and I doubt splitting those pages once each would be enough to stop them, so I'm against a JFF move now that I know about the page length issues. Plus, the other JFF pages I've seen length issues for (such as Crappy Trope Definitions, Tropes That Will Never Happen, and Trope Epitaph) have a more clear-cut purpose than Names The Same (not to mention that those pages exist for the sake of listing jokes and not... just the names of characters and people without any jokes about them).

The main reason I'm campaigning for it is because the cross media pages are already basically treated as joke pages anyway, so it wouldn't be difficult at all to just convert them. Obviously the length issues are a problem, but not an insurmountable one. The question is, is it worth trying to convert them or do we just kill them?

For cases in which a character shares a name with a RL person, restrict to gags only. Due to the low number that would qualify, that would need to go elsewhere.

To Named Like My Name or (for "almost the same" cases), Almost Famous Name.

I'm fine with disambiguating. I think there's merit to JFF since it's definitely things fandoms touch base over (e.g. here's a tweet from Ubisoft acknowledging a shared name), but with enforcing that "first name + surname" rule in the description. The cross-media pages are too diluted for it to be "fun"; there's no merit (fun or otherwise) to listing every character named Judy ever.

The game in this case would be more like coming up with descriptions for each character ("Is Judy a judge or a rabbit?"), which is how the pages are already laid out, which is why I've always thought of these as misplaced JFF pages anyway.

I'm not fond of that idea, for a reason Synchronicity already stated (plus the fact that a lot of these names, including Judy, are common to the point that the lists would become meaningless lists of coincidences if we tried to list as many characters with that name as possible):

The cross-media pages are too diluted for it to be "fun"; there's no merit (fun or otherwise) to listing every character named Judy ever.

I'm not arguing that the game is actually fun or that the move should happen... just that it's already sort of set up as a game and I don't want anyone to get confused about what my idea actually is and why I've always thought it was a possible solution.
