Jules Firenze, Betata Pokémon Center

By this point, the poor trainer was half-asleep, cradling a snoozing, post-food coma Ako. Scorpius was dutifully eating on his own, making sure he wasn't getting in anyone's way when he stretched himself out to eat, when Jules was feeling too tired to hand out pancakes.

When the girl with the Rhyhorn mentioned partners, however, Jules blinked awake, surprise evident on his features. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, partners?" he asks. "So we fight through the gym as pairs of trainers?" he grumbles.

Scorpius looked at his trainer, a little huff coming from the Tropius, as if he was disparaging him for being against teams. Ako couldn't really care less at the moment, snoozing away in Jules' arms.

Sal

Sal resumed eating his breakfast, putting aside some for José and for his other Pokemon. Arceus forbid he’ll forget to feed them! It was tasty, too. After a bit, he looked up from his breakfast, and turned to Harry and Victoria. Swallowing, he said “Um, hi! I’m Sal. What’s this about partnering up?”

It builds character.

Adela - Betata City Pokémon Centre - Active Pokémon: Patches the Indeedee, Spike the Munchlax and Gaffer the Nuzleaf

While the pancakes on offer could never quite match up with her mother's, Adela enjoyed them nonetheless. The Pecha Berry's trademark sweet taste wasn't too overpowering and married well with the texture of the batter. But the dash of whipped cream Adela added on top was the ring that tied the whole culinary ceremony together. She tried to ignore Gaffer's longing stare from across the room, but eventually relented and placed a dollop of cream onto the last of his portion. The Wily Pokémon suppressed a cheer at the sight... Thankfully, Patches and Spike (the latter of whom had added a small mound of treats to his meal) were none the wiser.

The girl with the Rhyhorn — Victoria — brought up the prospect of tackling the Gym Challenge as a duo, prompting Sal, a boy Adela didn't recognise, to inquire about the subject.

"I'm assuming that the Challenge, or at least part of it, will involve us being paired up with another challenger," she said, making small gestures with the spoon in her left hand. "Doesn't sound too bad to me. Means both parties can pool their knowledge and build tactics around it. I'm up for that."

Unlike some people, she added under her breath, spotting Jules sulking at the idea. He would have to get over it quickly if he was going to put on a performance that was anything like the previous night's battle. Adela frowned, convinced that she saw potential in her rival to be a team player.

Day 3, Morning - Betata City Pokemon Center

Phillip found a spot where he could comfortable sit Euca and himself, then set his platter in front of him. Before he started his meal, he made a silent prayer of gratitude for the meal, while also observing what the other trainers and their Pokemon were doing.

Euca cautiously reached out a paw and grabbed towards the platter.

"Oh, you want something?" Phillip asked. He tore off a corner of a piece of toast and placed it in Euca's outstretched paw. "Here. Try this."

Euca sniffed the piece of toast, then nibbled at it.

Meanwhile, Phillip interjected in the ongoing talks about the upcoming Gym Challenge. "Whatever this challenge is," he said, "I'll try to adapt to whoever I'm patnered with. Ma always said teamwork gives the best results. Although," he added, a touch embarrased, "Pa would say going alone is better, just to argue with Ma."

Suddenly, Pudding and Grill started making a commotion inside their Pokeballs. It seemed that they wanted a share of the breakfast now, rather than later.

"Okay, okay, you two," Phillip said, sending out Pudding and Grill from their Pokeballs. "But wait your turn, okay?"

Pudding burbled in agreement, before eyeing the pancakes.

"Carkoooooool!", Grill whined, showing Phillip the saddest and widest eyes he could.

"Steady now," Phillip said, carefully carving two pieces from a pancake and then deliberately serving Pudding first, then Grill after. Pudding munched on their piece contentedly, while Grill started vibrating with excitement as he chewed his piece.

Satisfied that his Pokemon were sufficiently sated, Phillip started on another piece of pancake.

Torry decided to interrupt with a bark at that point, getting Nick to glance down at him, pawing at Nick's shoe. Natalia looked at the Rockruff with curious confusion.

"I'm not sure if we'll have breakfast first, or pack up and move on, buddy," Nick replied to Torry in a slightly apologetic tone.

Meanwhile, Emmett turned his attention from the tent and wandered over to where some of the other Pokemon were gathered close to Zullie the Misdreavus. The Eevee sat down and let out an encouraging little mewl to the Ghost Pokemon.

Aleph Town — Professor Hawthorn's laboratory

"Wonderful to meet you all," the professor said. "Yes, I am the man with the Pokemon, as you say. I see you're all eager to get started. First of all, though, Lucario needs to read your auras."

"Auras?" Cathy innocently asked. The professor's Lucario walked up to each of the four prospective trainers, its eyes starting to glow as it held a paw out in the direction of each one. The paw it held out flickered with a sort of blue flame. Cathy yelped a little bit.

"Don't be alarmed!" Prof. Hawthorn exclaimed. "Aura is a natural life force energy, all living things have it. Lucario is simply measuring your auras so that we can match you with your perfect partner Pokemon," he explained. Lucario examined each trainer carefully, then lowered its hand, its eyes stopping glowing and its hand returning to normal. It then walked towards the back wall, which was absolutely covered in Poke Balls. It dextrously grabbed four Poke Balls from seemingly random sections of the wall, then walked over to each of the trainers and handed each of them a Poke Ball. "Go ahead, let's see your new partners," the professor added.

Ben was first, and he threw out his Poke Ball. With a flash of light, his Pokemon was released. It was a tiny Pokemon that resembled nothing less than a small ice cream cone made of snow and ice. Its head made up most of its body and was composed of snow, resembling a large dollop of vanilla ice cream, with two blue eyes, ice crystals for cheeks and a blue smile. Its body was squat and cylindrical with two nub-like "arms" jutting out on either side. It let out clouds of cool air from the sides of its body.

"I love it!" Ben exclaimed.

"Vani-vani!" his Pokemon chirped.

Next was Michael, who released his Pokemon from its Poke Ball. With a flash of light emerged a small quadrupedal Pokemon that looked like a little teddy bear stuffed animal. It had stout, brown colored limbs and a pink-and-white body, with a blank expression on its beady eyes. It had a short and puffy tail as well as a small white flap on its rear end that resembled the tag of a stuffed animal. It cooed and flailed its arms, stomping surprisingly hard on the ground.

"Quite a feisty one, aren't you, little one?" Michael laughed.

Finally was Cathy's Pokemon. She released her starter from its Poke Ball and out came a round blue Pokemon with large eyes and a tiny fish-like mouth. The mouth was situated near the top of its round body, overtop a white belly with a dark spiral making up its front part. It had no arms and two stubby little legs, as well as a long tadpole-like tail.

"Aww, you're so cute!" Cathy exclaimed.

"Poliwag!" her Pokemon chirped.

"It's your turn, Alice," the Professor urged, smiling.

Aleph Town — Pokemon Center

The Nurse Joy at Aleph Town had put together a modest breakfast of rye bread with cheese, bowls of oatmeal flavored with Oran Berries, and tall glasses of orange juice. A few of the trainers and their Pokemon had already begun to dig in.

Route 1 — Who's that Pokemon?

Ollie's Pokedex chimed in with information about the new Pokemon that she had encountered:

Nincada: the Trainee Pokemon. Because Nincada lives underground, it is nearly blind. It senses its environment with its antennae. It gets its nutrients by absorbing them from the roots of trees.

Nincada chittered a little bit, antennae twitching and looking around blearily, focusing on Oobleck cautiously.

Molly stayed back, trying to stay calm, not wanting to startle the little Bug-type.

Betata City — Pokemon Center

"Actually, all gym battles in the Tuloh region are 3-on-3," Victoria explained. "So whoever battles the Gym Leader will have two partners, and the gym leader will be assisted by two gym trainers. We don't get to choose our partners, either, they will be decided for us after we complete the Gym Challenge. I hope whoever I end up with makes up for Rover's weaknesses. Rock-types are good against Flying-types, but it might be a Water type or a Fighting type or something like that, and Rover can't handle that sort of thing..."

"It should be fine," Annie assured her. "I'm sure whoever you partner up with will make up for what you need."

Jacques, Route 3 - Outside Dalett Cave.

For a few moments, the young trainer quietly began packing the tent and belongings just as neatly and meticulously as he had set it up the night before as the tiny aquatic mouse's attention bounced between the unfamiliar face, their trainer and still looking somewhat annoyed at the noisy ghost, accident or not...only to get picked up by Jacques as he finished packing up.

"Um, w-well, firstly, it's nice to meet you...a-and secondly...I...I mean, I think...most of us are new...I didn't even k-know much about Pokemon until recently m-myself...so I don't know w-what to expect. Wasn't expecting people would l-literally fish them out of the water..."

Adela - Betata City Pokémon Centre - Active Pokémon: Patches the Indeedee, Spike the Munchlax and Gaffer the Nuzleaf

"Exactly," added Adela. All this talk of tactics brought a faint sparkle to her eye. She couldn't wait to find out what her potential partners had to offer. However, as discussion fell quiet for a second, her body grew tense as a niggling point came to mind. She took a sizeable sip of her OJ before she spoke again.

"There is... one thing I'm concerned about. Back in the Galar Region, the Gym Challengers battled the Leader in front of huge crowds. I did some research, and Tuloh's Gyms allow spectators too. I know it won't be anywhere near the same scale, but..." Her gaze fell to the floor. "...I don't do well with too-large groups of people."

Patches, sensing his Trainer's unease, abandoned his near-finished plate of pancakes to wander over and hold Adela's hand. He was sorry he couldn't do much else to stop her from overthinking, but he just wanted her to know he was there for her. Adela, for her part, gave him a smile small enough to go unseen by everyone else.

Spike contemplated stealing Patches's remaining portion, but stayed his tongue. Besides, with his secretive dash of treats factored in, he was almost full, anyway. At least for now. Gaffer, too, was almost done with his share.

Sal, Pokemon Center

Sal listened intently while eating his breakfast. It was quite good, in all honesty. Nothing beats home, but still. José sat next to him and ate what Sal gave him. He tilted his head. “So it’s all up to luck, huh? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see, then.” He hoped whoever he got grouped with were at least good. The fact that they were strangers was bad enough, but it wouldn’t be that bad. Just had to work together and win. “I think I could make it work. Wouldn’t you say so, buddy?” His Pokemon barked happily.

Alice stiffened a little as the Lucario turned its blue flame in her direction. It was harmless, she knew, but it didn't stop her from being nervous. There was an almost inaudible sigh of relief as the Lucario lowered the flame, walked to the back wall and handed her a Pokeball.

She eagerly opens the Pokeball, revealing a flaming red bird-like creature that quickly struck a proud, regal-looking pose. "Ori-cori-o!", it shouted proudly, puffing its chest up with pride.

"My, he is a beaut!", Alice exclaimed, clapping her hands together in excitement. "And a danseur already. Does it has a name?"

"Cori-o!", the bird shouted in response.

"Yes! You shall be named 'Cory'. A pleasure to meet you.", Alice dipped down into a curtsy in response.

Hyde Sagasu - Route 3, near Dalett Cave

Zullie the Misdreavus

"Yeah, we've been at it a couple days now. I'd say we're doing pretty good so far," Hyde said with some pride, though he realized that without his coat, he didn't have his badge to show off. His train of thought changed tracks as he considered what else Diego said. "Adding a Water-type to the team does sound like a good idea... oh, but it sounds like slim pickings around here."

While Hyde busied himself with getting his stuff packed up, Zullie floated down to the other Pokemon. She trilled softly, wishing them a good morning and checking in on them. General chit-chat.

After briefly disappearing into his tent, Hyde popped back out, now wearing his coat and hauling his backpack. He pressed the button on top and the high-tech tent shrunk down with no further drama. Hyde gave it some test nudges with his foot, just to be sure, then tied it to his pack, hoisting the heavy thing back on.

"Hey, you think it's okay to ask that worker guy about what they found in the cave?" Hyde asked all of a sudden, clearly just remembering now. "He said there might be something we can take. Like fossils." He said the last part with his eyes practically sparkling.

Betata City - Pokemon Center

"Three on three?", Phillip asked between bites. "That'll be new to me. Back in Alola, most battles are one-on-one or two-on-two."

Then, Phillip glanced at his team, who were silently pleading for just one more morsel of human food. He remembered what his Pokedex had told him what their types were: Normal for Pudding and Euca, and Rock/Fire for Grill. He'd be the first to admit that he was a total rookie at Pokemon battles and strategizing, but it was still apparent to him that he'd have no answers for any Water or Fighting moves his Gym opponents would use. Even so...

"All right, all right, here you go," Phillip told his team, portioning out three small pieces from his meal and feeding one to each of his Pokemon in turn. "This is the last one, okay?"

The three Pokemon grunted in acknowledgement and chewed into their portions.

"Well," Phillip said, turning again to the other trainers at the table, "Even if we lose this challenge today, we can try again another day, can't we?"

"If there's three challengers going at once, what happens if it's a slow day?" Jules wonders aloud while dangling a pancake above Ako's head. Shaking his head rapidly (and dropping the pancake on the happy Litwick) "Well, if we're challenging it, what type is the gym?" Scorpius leans in next to his trainer, who feeds him another pancake. "I have only two Pokémon, hopefully that's enough..." he mutters more to himself than others. He never really tried team battles, so this'll be certainly... interesting, especially with the people in the Center with him. "Even with the right partners, it can still go either way..." Aleph Town — Professor Hawthorn's laboratory

Professor Hawthorn smiled and chuckled a little bit as he saw the new trainers start to interact with their new partners. He walked towards a desk, getting out some objects from a drawer. He then walked over to each young trainer and handed them a handheld red device and a handful of empty Poke Balls.

"This is an essential device for your journeys. It's called a Rotom Pokedex," the Professor explained. "It will allow you to scan Pokemon you encounter on your journeys and learn their characteristics, abilities, and techniques. Like so," he said, pressing a button on each device. At once, the devices flew out from the new trainers' hands and floated in midair, scanning their new Pokemon partners. On their screens, the Pokedexes started showing information on the partners, and a chirpy electronic voice chimed in, one after the other:

Vanillite: the Fresh Snow Pokemon. Vanillite creates snow crystals and makes snow fall around its body. Its icy breath can reach a temperature of negative 58 degrees Fahrenheit.

Stufful: the Flailing Pokemon. Despite its cute-looking appearance, Stufful is adverse to being handled. When it gets angry, it flails about with its powerful limbs, which can split trees in half.

Poliwag: the Tadpole Pokemon. Poliwag has trouble walking on its newly formed feet, so it is more comfortable in the water. The skin on its belly is so thin that its internal organs are visible.

Oricorio, Baile Style: The Dancing Pokemon. This Oricorio has taken on this form after drinking red nectar. Baile Oricorio has a fiery style of battling, its passionate dance moves causing enemies to combust.

The Pokedexes then flew back into their owners' hands.

"If you want to catch more Pokemon and train your new partners, I recommend going on the Gym Challenge. The closest gym to here is in Betata City, to the north of here. You can get there via Route 1. Best of luck on your journeys!" the Professor explained.

"You heard him, let's go!" Ben exclaimed.

"Vani vani!" his Vanillite chirped, floating behind him.

"Shall we, friends?" Michael said, leading his Stufful out towards the door. Cathy excitedly followed suit, picking up her Poliwag and carrying it in her arms as she left.

Aleph Town — Pokemon Center

As Ren and Char ate their breakfast, they heard a groan coming from one of the other seats. A green-haired girl with long, straight pigtails and a red dress had sat down, as her Pokemon, a brown and white Grass-type, sat beside her, a small snow cloud forming around its head and gently sprinkling snowflakes into her oatmeal.

"Come on, it's going to get cold now! Can't you control your snow, Winter?" the girl grumbled.

"Snoooo...." her Pokemon sighed, looking apologetic but shaking its head.

Route 1 — Battling Nincada

Seeing that Ollie's Grimer didn't attack, the Nincada didn't see fit to attack either. Instead, it tensed up, its skin hardening into a shinier sheen, performing a Harden of its own.

Betata City — Pokemon Center

"Actually, it's three trainers on three trainers," Victoria explained. "The gym leader has two aides fight alongside them, against three challengers a side. Then each person is allowed to use one Pokemon. So you'd better choose wisely both to support your allies as well as to make a dent in the opposing Pokemon." She looked at Jules. "As for the popularity of the gym. There's been a huge influx of trainers, ever since the Professor started his commercials. I was doing research, and it seems like he just does 1v1 battles in the event that there aren't enough trainers for a 3v3. Or he simply doesn't run the gym challenge that day," she continued.

"I think this gym is Flying-type?" Annie responded, putting a hand on her chin in a thoughtful motion.

"Yes, it is," Harry said in a deadpan tone of voice. "I can see the fluttering of wings in my mind's eye..." Annie looked at him in disbelief, then pointed a thumb at him and glanced over at Victoria.

"You said he always does that?" Annie asked. Victoria sighed and nodded, smiling.

"That's Psychics for you," Victoria chuckled. She glanced over, noticing Adela's obvious discomfort. "Hey, don't worry. I've been to the Galar region before. The gyms here are nothing like the crazy spectacle there is there. They don't Dynamax their Pokemon here, for starters."

"What's Dynamax?" Annie asked incredulously.

"Basically, when a Pokemon turns gigantic in battle at the command of a trainer, it's a Thing people do in the Galar region," Victoria answered.

"I remember reading about something crazy that happened in the Galar region a few years back. Some kid rose through the ranks to reach the championships only for the CEO of a major company to try and bring about the end of the world or something big like that," Annie gasped. "Then they had a battle with some massive legendary Pokemon that nearly shrouded the region in purple clouds and drove Pokemon nuts!"

Outside Dalett Cave

"Naturally Pokemon live in the water, just as much as they live in the tall grass," Diego explained. "I caught both of my Pokemon myself, some of my proudest catches. "It's usually pretty good catching around here. I don't know anything about fossils, I don't pay any mind to what you can dig out of the ground, I prefer to focus on what you can fish out of the waves. That's my mission— to fish up the biggest and best Pokemon there is!"

Hyde Sagasu - Route 3, near Dalett Cave

Zullie the Misdreavus

Diego's dream struck a chord with Hyde. "You know, if you're after the biggest water Pokemon, you'll want to check out Johto sometime. According to our old legends, the Whirl Islands off the coast are home to no less than the Guardian of the Sea itself," he said, gesturing dramatically and generally getting into the act of spinning one of his home region's myths. Hyde had a faraway look in his swirly eyes. Tales of seldom seen, legendary creatures were one of his biggest passions. Though, for every myth with a kernel of truth, there were two or three less substantial rumors he believed with equal fervor.

Meanwhile, Zullie was recounting to the other Pokemon, the harrowing tale of the morning's events. She even pantomimed the tent snapping shut by closing her hair tendrils around herself and falling to the ground in mock struggle. Unknowingly, both her and Hyde were being similarly theatrical.

...And he thought gym battles in his region were cool. Pokémon turning into literal giants sounded like an Arceus-damned dream for him, and it showed in the sparkle in his eyes. "Perhaps I'll pay a visit to Galar after this region." he mused aloud. Then again, a giant-sized Ako probably would cause mass havoc, so maybe not...

Ako, now fully sated, smiled in Jules' lap, snoring away, candle brightening and dimming as she went, as Scorpius kept a watchful eye on the disruptive Litwick. As Jules looked down and noticed his sleeping starter, he smiled tenderly as well and recalled her to her Pokéball. "I suppose you're done as well?" he pets Scorpius' head, and the Tropius nods with a huff.

"Well, if there's nothing else, I'll be challenging the gym now. Happy travels for those who aren't going to, I suppose." Jules stretches, making to stand up and leave. If anyone followed him, sure, why not.

Betata City — Pokemon Center

"Giant Pokemon?", Phillip asked. "That sounds a lot like Totem Pokemon back where I'm from. Though," he added thoughtfully, "they mostly show up in the wild."

Phillip vaguely recalled something in his early childhood about the sky ripping open and various Pokemon-like beasts descending on Alola. He wasn't sure if it really happened or if it was some sort of movie he'd seen or bedtime story his parents told him, though, so he refrained from mentioning it at the table.

Pudding, noticing that Jules was about to leave the table, glommed up Phillip's arm and poked at his cheek, burbling at him to get his attention. Meanwhile, Euca was lying on top of Grill, who was happily spinning on the floor.

"Huh?", Phillip asked, before noticing what Jules was doing. "Oh, right," he added, downing the rest of his drink and getting up. "Well, lovely to meet you all. See you at the Gym."

He then turned around to see Euca and Grill. With a sigh, he pulled out their Pokeballs and recalled them, before doing the same to Pudding.

"Now, where is that Gym?", Phillip muttered to himself.

Nick the photographer - Outside Dalett Cave on Route 3, with Hyde, Flint, Adrian, and Jacques staying to camp.

Also starring Torry the Rockruff, Emmett the Eevee, and Natalia the Noibat!

"Well, if we ever see a guardian of the sea or something, I'll be sure to get a photo of it," Nick said with a grin, then gave Diego a nod. "Anyway, best of luck to you, mister. We've got a cave to check out."

With that, Nick turned to head back towards his tent, intending to pack it up. "Sorry Torry, I think breakfast might be on hiatus," the photographer mentioned to his following Rockruff, who let out a slight whine in response. Natalia stuck close to Torry, likewise following Nick.

Meanwhile, Emmett listened to Zullie with rapt attention, his ears up and his eyes wide as he sat there. He let out another mewl of both concerned sympathy, and astonishment.

Adela - Betata City Pokémon Centre - Active Pokémon: Patches the Indeedee, Spike the Munchlax and Gaffer the Nuzleaf

Adela's eyes seemed to veer off somewhere else at the mention of a certain incident back in Galar. The second Darkest Day... She remembered her father fretting non-stop about it at the time — his side of the family back in Hammerlocke were right in the vicinity of the event, and he couldn't help but worry about them. Adela had precious few opportunities to see her Galarian family, but her dad's stress rubbed off on her, and she made sure to express her due sympathies the next time they interacted.

Adela returned to the conversation upon Jules contemplating visiting Galar someday.

"Me too," she said. "If you're lucky, Jules, I might introduce you to my auntie and my little cousins. They could learn a thing or two from you." Every word was sincere, even though her expression remained relatively neutral.

Satisfied that she and her Pokémon were all done and well-fed, she retrieved her party's Poké Balls and recalled them. "Come on back, you three."

She then stood up, backpack back in its place, and followed Jules to head for the Gym. When she caught Phillip muttering about not knowing where the Gym was, she whipped her head round to answer him: "Look for the huge tower with the bird Pokémon statues on the sides. Don't see how you can miss it."

"Hark! For your greatest fears manifest in yours truly!" (She/Her) (Current focus: Image Pickin')
