The wild Fennekin winced, taking the Scratch attack, before it shook its head and spat out a few hot Embers at Phillip's Ditto-turned-Fennekin. However, since Pudding was currently a Fire-type, the hot embers barely made much of an impact.
As Ariel and Joe watched, they didn't seem to notice as some grass rustled behind them.
Hideki nodded.
"Yeah, I talked to my sister when I arrived in Dalett City a couple of days ago," he explained. "Just try to keep the conversation short. People tend to get tetchy when they're kept waiting. Though we seem to be the only trainers here..." Hideki murmured. He blinked, looking around. "Y'know, this Pokemon Center's surprisingly empty. Where is everyone anyway?" he asked. Nurse Joy smiled.
"They're probably at the Betata Gym. There's a gym battle going on. You can head up there and sit in the stands, or if you want, I can turn on the live-stream on the screen up here," Nurse Joy offered.
Flint pulled out his Rotom Dex, which immediately chimed in about the Pokemon he was facing:
"Stand firm, Crusher!" George ordered. "Wait for them to come to you!"
Crusher screeched, stomped a foot, and planted itself firm. Meanwhile, Natu was zapped by Zullie's mysterious ray of confusion and looked dazzled. Nabe's rocks pounded into it as well, slowing down its flying.
"Snap out of it, Natu! Use Night Shade on that Misdreavus!" Skye exclaimed. Natu, still looking wildly around, focused itself on Zullie and its eyes flashed purple. A shadowy aura surrounded Zullie, pulsing with painful dark energy, then dissipated. Jonas, meanwhile, smirked, seeing an opportunity.
"If that Pinsir's just gonna sit there, use Aerial Ace on it, Gligar!" Jonas exclaimed. Gligar hissed, then its wings started to glow and it flew quickly in the direction of Crusher. George just smirked.
"Now, Crusher! Use Bind!" George exclaimed, and Crusher crouched, pinchers widening. When Gligar flew close, Crusher snapped its mandibles shut, keeping Gligar still.
"Hey!" Jonas exclaimed. "Break free! Little help here, Hawke?" Hawke just sighed.
"Corvisquire! Fury Attack that Pinsir to make it let go!" Hawke exclaimed. He then turned to Jonas. "You can't be so reckless when the opponent's got an obvious strategy. Even against something weak to your Pokemon. How many times do I have to tell you this?" he asked. Jonas looked irritated, but looked forward towards the gym challengers.
Corvisquire, obediently, flew towards Crusher and started to peck furiously at the Stag Beetle Pokemon in an attempt to make it release its grip.
"Whoa, guys!" George exclaimed.
Meanwhile in the stands, Sarah scooted up to the gathered group, trying to get a better view. Reluctantly, Chelsea also got closer, as she was having a hard time seeing from where she had planted herself.
"What was he thinking, bringing a Bug-type to a Flying-type gym?" Chelsea muttered quietly. "Has he got cobwebs in his brain or something? They're just gonna gang up on him. That's what I'd do, anyway." In response, Sarah huffed.
"That's not nice! You can't always count on type advantage, you know!" Sarah insisted. Chelsea rolled her eyes.
"Well yeah, I'm not stupid," Chelsea simply replied.

With Nabe the Aron
"M-hm..." Flint nodded to himself after getting the pokedex's reading and quickly slipped the device back into a pocket.
"On it! Nabe, use Head Smash and knock that Corvisquire away!" Flint calls out an points dramatically to the bird assaulting Crusher, and Nabe turns and puts herself low to the ground for a moment, growling in concentration and gathering a dangerous aura before launching herself recklessly headfirst at the Corvisquire. "aarrrrRRON!"

Zullie the Misdreavus
Zullie winced in pain as Night Shade's stinging miasma clung to her for a moment. Hyde couldn't help worrying but the little ghost shook it off, still determined and ready for the next order. She was trusting him to make the right call and he wasn't about to let her down.
To that end, Hyde quickly took in what was happening with the rest of the battle. Nabe's impending Head Smash would probably deal with the Corvisquire situation. Natu's Night Shade was an unpleasant surprise though. The familiar Ghost-type attack wasn't hindered by any kind of defense.
"Zullie, give that Natu a good scare. Astonish!" Hyde called out. Zullie cracked a mischievous grin before fading from sight. She invisibly rushed towards the Natu, only reappearing right before her attack made contact, screeching like a banshee. With any luck, if the attack didn't finish it off, the Natu might still flinch.

He was trying to maintain focus, so he didn't look as Chelsea and Sarah started to talk. "Might've been the best choice he had anyway," Nick commented on the conversation, with his attention still through the camera towards the battle.
Emmett looked almost a little worried about the people getting closer, but also curious. Torry just happily panted, and gave a bark of encouragement for Nabe and Zullie.

Maya and Sirius, who had at some point let themselves out to watch, cheer on Zullie with encouraging “Vuvui!”s, while Luna howls for Nabe.
Pudding yips at the Embers the wild Fennekin spat at them, only realizing a second later that they're barely hurt by the flames. They grin quite smugly when they realize that.
"You got this, Pudding!", Phillip rallies. "One more Scratch on the Fennekin, then back up while I do my thing!"
"Fennek!", Pudding replies, before zig-zagging and aiming another Scratch on the Fennekin, this time targeting it's other side with their right forepaw.
As Phillip prepares to wind up a Pokeball pitch, he hears a faint rustling of grass behind him. He glances behind him, only to see Ariel and Joe watching the fight, plus a patch of grass of indeterminate size behind them. Uncertain if he was just hearing things, but also unwilling to take chances, he shuffles about two steps forwards, then beckons Ariel and Joe to do the same with his free hand.

"A gym?" he asks, looking up. "I...." he looks at Ako's Pokeball. "Sure. Maybe I can bond with Ako there." He turns to look at his fellow trainers, warily. "What're... you guys doing now?" he asks slowly.

You piss off the Venom T-Rex. Roll initiative. The Fennekin recoiled back from Pudding's Scratch attack, yipping a few times and then swishing its tail in a Tail Whip towards Pudding.
Ariel turned around, gasping as she noticed the grass rustling more vigorously. Joe yelped as out of the bushes stumbled a young man with a forest-green jacket and long pants, breathing heavily. He pointed towards Pudding and the Fennekin looking frantic and baffled. Next to him was a stern-looking humanoid Pokemon, a couple of feet tall, with white skin and green hair, that almost looked like a little girl wearing a tutu. It had piercing red eyes and two red horns on the top of its head.
"There... there you are... but there are... two of you!" the man exclaimed. "You! What are you doing? How did you copy him??" He pulled out a Poke Ball. "Return!" he exclaimed, pointing it at Pudding, and it shot a beam at Pudding. The beam shattered and burst into light when it hit Pudding, and Pudding was completely unaffected. The young man cursed in a different language, then pointed his Poke Ball at the other Fennekin, returning it to a Poke Ball.
"Hey, we were going to catch that!" Joe exclaimed.
"Well he's mine, so no you weren't," the man retorted. Once he had returned the Fennekin, the man doubled over and took deep breaths in exhaustion. The green and white Pokemon, for its part, didn't seem too interested in the man, simply gesturing further down the route.
"Kirlia," it purred, in a high-pitched but distant tone.
"Yes, I know, you want to get back to her. You can tell her we found it so we're done here," the man grumbled, standing up straight.
"What's going on??" Ariel asked, blinking a few times in confusion.
"I should ask you the same question," the man said. "That Pokemon is a spitting image of my Fennekin."
"Hold your grip! Tighten it with Vise Grip!" George commanded, and Crusher held firm, trying to tighten its mandibles. Gligar continued to squirm away from Crusher, trying to escape. Corvisquire continued to peck away but it was pounded suddenly by Nabe's Head Smash, tumbling across the stadium and then flapping into the air, shaking its head.
Natu's eyes widened and it froze for a moment in fear. It looked weak but it still flew in place. The shock also seemed to snap it out of its confusion.
"Give that Misdreavus another Night Shade!" Skye yelled, and again Natu summoned a dark shadowy aura around Zullie.
"He's in close range!" Jonas said firmly. "Use Poison Sting!" Gligar hissed, its tail glowing purple, before it jabbed its tail into Crusher's torso. Crusher screeched and winced, but still held firm.
"Corvisquire, fly into the air and Hone Claws!" Hawke commanded. At once, Corvisquire took to the skies, gnashing its claws against each other to try and sharpen them.
In the stands, Chelsea shot a look at Adrian.
"It's still a bad move," Chelsea replied. "He should've found a better Pokemon for the gym."

I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.Pudding is first lulled into letting their guard down from the Fennekin's Tail Whip, and then dazzled by the light from the young man's Pokeball. "Fen?!", they bark in confusion.
Phillip is thrown for a loop by the appearance of the young man and his Kirlia, and then gets upset when he realizes that the Fennekin he was about to catch was already caught. Rapidly, he thinks of a way to properly apologize, and he seizes his chance when the young man asks about his own, Fennekin-disguised Pokemon.
"Alola!", Phillip says to the young man, drawing a rainbow shape in the air with his open-palmed hands. He then bows his head and adds "And sorry, mister! We didn't know the Fennekin was already tamed."
Pudding paces over to Phillip and nudges his leg with their nose.
Phillip, taking the hint, adds "Oh, my name's Phillip. And this is my partner, Pudding." He gestures to Pudding as he says this, which Pudding takes as their cue to revert back into a Ditto. "As you're seeing now," Phillip adds, "Pudding's a Ditto, which is why they were battling your Fennekin as a Fennekin."
Pudding burbles something confident-sounding as they flex their appendages.
"So, er, may I ask what you're doing here?", Phillip queries.
Hyde Sagasu - Betata City Gym
Zullie the Misdreavus
The Natu was still up and still throwing around Night Shades. That wasn't good, but neither was whatever Corvisquire was up to, as it hovered up high, sharpening its talons. This could be a critical decision. Try to finish off the Natu, or stick to the plan and try confusing Corvisquire before it makes its next move? For sure, Zullie was still in Natu's sights but there was the bigger picture to consider too.
Hyde took a deep breath and pointed up at the Raven Pokemon. "Zullie! Use Confuse Ray on the Corvisquire!" he called out. Hyde was tense. Was this the right call? Zullie was definitely going to take another hit for this. Zullie only barely hesitated before taking her eyes off the Natu and loosing a barrage of headache-inducing, rainbow lights at Hawke's Pokemon.

"I'd like to see the stream, please." Joachim requested to Nurse Joy, though before he could settle down to watch it, he had a phone call to make. Walking his team over to one of the kiosks, he sat down and dialed the number, taking in a few deep breaths and hoping that he wasn't catching his mother at a bad time. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait long, as soon he could see a thick mop of hair in front of the camera before it parted to reveal the familiar face of his mom, who smiled once she saw him and moved back so she could properly face the camera.
"There you are, I was wondering when you'd give me a call. How's it been, being out in the world?"
"It's been great! I mean, I haven't done a whole lot yet, just went through one route and reached the next town, but I'm getting there."
"Baby steps are still important, you know. Every journey starts with them. Now tell me, what's your team looking like so far? Have you caught any new Pokemon, or is it just you and your partner right now?"
"W-Well, I have Gliss, obviously, she's been great. I also caught a Deerling named Fleetfoot, and I just caught a Nickit. I haven't thought of a name for him yet, but I might wait until he's not giving me the stink eye before I broach that subject with him."
"Ah, one of those. Not all of my Pokemon liked me to start with, but I got through to them. I know you will too."
"Thanks, Mom. I'd love to talk more, but I need to go, there's a gym battle being broadcast and I want to watch it."
"Of course. Call me if you need anything, you know I'm here for you and rooting for you. Love you, Joachim."
"Love you too, Mom...wait, actually, let me get a picture."
Before he ended the call, Joachim managed to wrangle his team into the frame of the camera and snapped a photo so he could send it over to her. Gliss looked like she wanted the camera to know that she was the boss, Fleetfoot posed proudly for it, and Nickit...well, miffed as they were, he still made sure to stand tall and make himself look intimidating. Once that was concluded, Joachim departed the kiosk and returned to the group at large, looking for a spot to sit so he could watch the livestream of the gym battle.

Adrian chuckles dryly, remembering stories his uncle told him of trainers that he’d met on his own gym challenges.
The Duovees and Luna continue to cheer for their friends.
Flint Kajiya - Betata Gym Battle
with Nabe the Aron
The Corvisquire taking to the air limited Nabe's options to continue attacking it, but with Zullie already pursuing it that was fine. That poison sting on Crusher was a bit concerning but their options were limited as long as that Gligar was in his grip...
"Keep it up, Nabe! Get that Natu next!"
Barely slowing down after her collision with the Corvisquire, Nabe skidded into a turn before charging at the Natu like a small angry bulldozer.
Adela - Route 1 - Active Pokemon: Patches the Indeedee - VS a Wild Oddish
Adela's plan had gone swimmingly so far. Lower the opponent's will to fight, then trap it into using a move that will benefit her once copied with Psych Up. Just one more step now...
"Patches, Stored Power!" she cried and, on cue, Patches curled and unfurled himself with a flash of purple, pink and blue and a cry of "Deedee!" Then, similarly-coloured power materialised to strike the Oddish. With Patches still hypnotised into a state of increased strength, his move's power would be boosted, and the type advantage could only help.
"Hark! For your greatest fears manifest in yours truly!" (She/Her) (Current focus: Image Pickin')The young man in green widened his eyes when he looked at Phillip's Ditto transforming back into its true form.
"That's a very rare Pokemon, you're lucky to have gotten one," the man told him. "I'm guessing that professor gave you one, huh? Anyway, that's beside the point. I was here to look for my Fennekin. It ran off and I was sure I had tracked it down here," he explained.
"Sorry we roughed it up, we thought it was wild," Ariel admitted. Joe looked apologetic.
"It's whatever. The important thing is it's back," the man said.
"Kirl!" Kirlia chirped, glaring at the man and gesturing back down Route 1.
"All right, all right, fine!" the man said. "I can't stay. I've got to be going. I have important business to attend to. Ahem. Kirlia! Teleport!" he exclaimed. Kirlia huffed, then got into position with the man.
With a flash of the Kirlia's eyes, it vanished into a sudden flash of blue light, along with the man. Joe looked amazed. Meanwhile, Ariel looked thoughtful.
"His Fennekin just ran away? That's unfortunate. His Kirlia didn't seem to like him too much either..." Ariel murmured. Then there was a sudden flash of light off down the path and a loud noise that sounded like a large release of energy.
"What was that?!" Joe shouted.
As it turned out, the flash of light, visible and audible from a good deal of distance away, came from Patches, who released a frankly enormous amount of Stored Power right at the unfortunately Growing Oddish.
Oddish was immediately hit with a huge dose of psychic power, and it squeaked like a squeaky toy, tumbling back and falling onto the ground, looking dazed and unconscious.
Hideki smiled as Joachim conducted his call with his mother.
"Ah, makes me miss my sister," he murmured to himself. Nurse Joy dutifully fiddled with some of the controls on the large screen in the Pokemon Center, turning it towards the battle in progress.
"There you are," she said, watching the screen herself with a smile.
Zullie shot a Confuse Ray directly at Hawke's Corvisquire, and as it was flying in the air sharpening its claws, the Confuse Ray hit it dead on. Corvisquire's flying took on an almost drunken-looking swerve to it, and it looked utterly bewildered.
"Come on, Corvisquire, snap out of it! Use Aerial Ace on the Pinsir!" Hawke commanded. Corvisquire, however, took a wild swerve and crashed itself into one of the platforms that hung above the arena, slapping itself with its wings.
Natu flew closer to try and get a better view of the arena, but Nabe leapt into the air and slammed into the psychic-type Pokemon. Natu chirped and flew over the ground weakly, before collapsing onto the floor of the arena. The referee pointed a flag into the air.
"Natu is unable to battle!" the referee shouted. Skye sighed and reached for her Poke Ball, recalling her Natu.
"You did well, Natu," Skye said, before stepping back to take more of a support role.
"All right, time to execute our power move!" George excitedly said. "Crusher! Use Seismic Toss!"
Crusher screeched, then ducked down and bounded high into the air. It did several front flips in the air before releasing its grip on Jonas' Gligar. Gligar slammed into the ground, causing Jonas to gasp.
Gligar hissed, then weakly flew into the air, narrowing its eyes.
"Come on, you've got it on the ropes!" Jonas encouraged. "Gligar, use Quick Attack on that Pinsir!" Gligar excitedly and speedily rushed towards Crusher, slamming into it and backing up into the air just as quickly before the Stag Beetle Pokemon could get another grip.
Crusher looked tired, as it weakly stood glaring at the Ground- and Flying-type.
In the stands, Chelsea looked indignantly at Adrian.
"Who are you calling neurotic??" Chelsea snapped. "I just don't use weak Pokemon in gym fights! Especially ones owned by trainers dumb enough to send them into fights they can't win!"

Adrian feels his eyes twitch.
“Well maybe there’s no such thing as “weak Pokémon”, don’t you think?”
He thrust an arm out to indicate the battle going on, “Because it looks to me like they’re doing the best they can with what they have. And they’re thriving on it!”
Sensing her trainer’s growing anger, Luna bounds over and up onto his shoulder, giving a hiss in accord.
“ ‘Strength’ this, “weak” that. Arceus’ Rings,” he scoffs, adding under his breath, “no better than some…Neo-Plasma flunky.”
He stomps away and over to the railing, takes a deep breath, and shouts out to the battlers, “YOU’VE GOT THIS, CRUSHER!”
Something about the young man's demeanour rubs Phillip the wrong way. It is almost as if the man had no love for his Pokemon, and a dubious amount for his fellow human.
"Wait," Phillip says, as the man's Kirlia prepares to Teleport the both of them. "Why did your-"
-Fennekin run away?, he would have said, but it's too late. The man and his Kirlia have already Teleported away.
Pudding scowls at the spot where the man and his Kirlia once stood.
Phillip is about to add his own thoughts to Ariel's musings, but he is interrupted once again. This time, a flash of light and an explosion of noise stun him.
"Something strange!", Phillip responds to Joe's question, scooping up Pudding and hustling in the direction of the flash. "Someone could be hurt there! Let's see what's happened!"
Hyde Sagasu - Betata City Gym
Zullie the Misdreavus
With a curious mix of satisfaction and sympathy, Hyde watched Corvisquire lose coordination and crash, courtesy of Zullie's Confuse Ray. It was, after all, something Hyde had a history of without any good excuse. The anticipation of Natu's counter attack was cut short by Nabe's almighty head bonk.
"Whew, thanks for the cover, Flint!" Hyde said, flashing a grin and a thumbs up to his teammate. Now it was 3v2, but that was no reason to get overconfident. The plan was working so far. "One more time! Confuse the Gligar!" Hyde called out to Zullie.
"Vvuuuuu~" Zullie intoned again, rainbow lights building up in her jewels. Once she launched them in Gligar's direction, Zullie shook her head for a second, blinking quickly. She was starting to get slightly dazzled by her own attack.
Higher beings, these words are for you alone.Adela - Route 1 - Active Pokemon: Patches the Indeedee - The wild Oddish fainted!
Adela gasped at the resulting blast from Stored Power. Magnificent! She would have to keep this strategy in mind for future battles. Now to react to the Oddish's next move.
...Except it never came. The little guy just fell to the floor, unmoving.
Turns out, Adela's plan worked too well.
What was she supposed to do now? She recalled it was bad practice to attempt to catch a fainted Pokemon, so that idea was shot. And she couldn't just leave it there! Leaving a small, fainted Pokemon to the wild seemed nothing short of evil in the moment. Trying to keep a cool head, her eyes nevertheless darted around the place as if trying to look for an answer, a way to fix the situation.
Patches stepped backwards, eyes widened by surprise at both the immense strength he had displayed and the consequences thereof. He was about to try and help Adela calm down when, just barely audible...
"Something strange! Someone could be hurt there! Let's see what's happened!"
"Patches, return," whispered Adela as she rummaged through her bag to find Patches's Poke Ball, withdrew him from the field, and shut the bag once again. She could hear footsteps drawing closer - if the stranger or strangers had ill intentions, it would be irresponsible of her to allow Patches to come to harm. As soon as she could spot the approaching figure of a person, Adela slowly bowed forward at the waist, her ponytail falling to her side. Under no circumstances was she going to allow them to see the stress she was under.
"It wasn't supposed to turn out this way..."
"Hark! For your greatest fears manifest in yours truly!" (She/Her) (Current focus: Image Pickin')"We gotta go check it out!" Ariel exclaimed, following Phillip and Joe towards the direction of the flash. When they had arrived, they noticed a girl who seemed to be in quite a state. Next to them, in a patch of disturbed grass, was an unconscious Oddish.
After a tense moment, however, Ariel, who was about to confront the girl, noticed the Oddish's leg twitch. The Oddish weakly sat up, looking around and blinking at the trainers. It squeaked, then dashed into the bushes and out of sight. Joe breathed a sigh of relief.
Ariel approached Adela, looking concerned.
"Are you okay?" she asked. "It's rough knocking out a wild Pokemon like that, I know. But, you were just trying to battle and catch it, right? The Pokemon are going to be okay, as long as you're not too rough with them."
"So what was that loud noise and flash of light then?" Joe asked curiously.
I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.Phillip surveys the scene as he, Ariel, and Joe approach it. There was an Oddish, who fled into the brushes after being made unable to battle, and there is a pony-tailed girl bowing before them. No other Pokemon seem to be near her.
Huh?, Phillip thinks. Where'd her Pokemon go? Or maybe that flash was all her?
While Phillip was distracted by his thought, and as Ariel was consoling the girl, Pudding took their chance to slide out of Phillip's arms and crawl to the top of his head. A couple of taps from one of their appendages was enough to snap Phillip out of his own head.
After Joe asked his question, Phillip steps in and introduces the group. "Alola!", he says, tracing a rainbow above his head with his hands. note "I'm Phillip, this rascal on my head is Puddingnote , and these two are Ariel and Joe." Realizing he forgot to ask his question, he adds "Er, what's your name? Is anyone else with you?"
Adela - Route 1 - No Active Pokemon - Enter Phillip, Ariel and Joe
When Adela rose back to a neutral pose, she studied the forms of the three strangers: a short, tweenaged lad with red hair and green eyes; a girl with long red hair who seemed to be a little older than her; and a boy who couldn't have been more than 10 years old. In the tween boy's arms was a pink, gelatinous-looking Pokemon, but this wasn't the time to enquire about it. The girl was closest to her, and gave off an aura of hostility - she must've assumed the worst, despite Adela's protests.
Out of the corner of her eye, however, she noticed the Oddish gingerly rising to its feet and heading for the bushes to safety. Oh, thank Arceus. Hopefully it can get some rest and get back to its own business. The girl, relaxed in the knowledge that this was just a rookie trainer dealing with her first wild knockout, clarified that future wild Pokemon would be okay so long as her battles proceeded under normal conditions.
"I'm fine. Glad the little guy's good, too," said Adela. She was content to let this capture attempt end in failure.
The youngest boy then asked her what the sound and flash of light was.
"My strategy," she answered. "Patches - my Indeedee - and I were battling that Oddish. I had Patches Encore it into using Growth, then use Psych Up to copy its power boost. The flash you saw was him using Stored Power. Guess neither of us knew our own strength." She picked up her bag and hoisted the straps over her arms. "Now, I'm just looking for Betata City. If my Poketch's Berry Search map is right" - she gave the gadget a quick glance - "it's not far."
The tween boy's amorphous Pokemon then slid to the top of his red mop. Its tiny, beady eyes and simple smile were unmistakably those of a Ditto. Its antics with the boy and the way it moved its stretchy form prompted a budding smile. How cute, she thought. And if it was as cool and jellylike to the touch as it looked, the tween boy could hypothetically use his Ditto as a cooling gel on a warm day...
"Professor's, right? You're a lucky guy," she said to the tween boy, who introduced himself as Phillip and his Ditto as Pudding. He then gave out the names of the rest of the party - the girl was called Ariel, and the younger boy's name was Joe. Time to throw her name in.
"I'm Adela. And no, I've been going solo all day. I did catch another Pokemon, though. A Munchlax."

"Nice move, George. Nabe, follow up with Rock Tomb before that Gligar can dodge!"
